Steven tried to think of the half hearted argument to why pizza and ice cream were far from real food but putting his heart behind that cause. It was lost the moment the word pizza had been uttered as he nodded instead. “Gruel... oh you’ve no idea how long it took me to master gruel. I mean the temperature and milk ration to salt and taste and there’s a whole equation with gruel.” He said chuckling lightly.
Dropping by to make sure Isla had a stocked fridge it was a good idea in his mind, was he over protective yes and only more so at the mention of the fire house and firemen. Two things his sister would never need in her life as he stared at her for a moment. “Yeah you and beefcake need to stay away from each other, I work with those guys and the only beef they see is in sandwiches so no show at all.” Steven said smirking, “Then again once they all know I’m your brother... I think you’ll be running for the hills.”
Well that or he would break the first person that looked twice at his sister for good reason. The last thing he wanted was her stressing out for each call or waiting for a guy that might not come home off shift. Beefcake or not he was determined to find his sister a decent guy with a safe job. “Oh hell no, did I say anything about setting you up?” Steven said as he grinned, “I know a few people over in head office that might be good though, the vampires there never see the sun and the closest they get to danger is a paperclip.” He added raising his brow. “I could get you a date with a few of those guys if you wanted?” He teased.

His reaction, of course, was what she'd been poking for, and she grinned. "Sure, hook me up with some ancient paper-pusher desk-jockey with a handsome beer-belly!" Laughing, she rolled her eyes, then broke into the song from 'Fiddler on the Roof': "Isla, oh Isla, Have I made a match for you! He's handsome, he's young! Alright, he's 62. But he's a nice man, a good catch, true?""You don't look like a Yenta to me, Steven, so no matchmaking. Besides, what's wrong with hunky firemen? They make decent money, are fit, don't think too much, and you come home every night, so what's the problem..?" Of course, as it came out of her mouth she realized what she'd said and quickly muttered, "I'm sorry..." Steven Hudson

Steven laughed and nodded, “Oh yeah I’ve a list of those, very safe options. Won’t stray far and will likely never see harm.” He said grinning, of course there was the no one is ever good enough for my sister issues but then he was the older brother. If anything he had rights over annoying potential boyfriends simply because he was related. Steven rolled his eyes as he heard her singing as he started to laugh.
“Don’t give up the day job Isla.” He teased her as he listened to her talk about match making and firemen. Yes of all the people in the world the last ones he wanted to have her involved with were firemen or police officers, paramedics were just as unsafe and really any guy was. Once the words of come home every night rang in his ears he could feel his face fall a little. If anyone knew that to be untrue it was them as he tried to smile through it.
“Its okay, no need to be sorry.” Steven said trying his best to keep things upbeat. “They do mostly and besides so do the beer belly guys much better option for you.” He honestly wished that they all came home at the end of shift but there was no guarantee on life. Steven reached out to hug Isla as he smiled, “Or I just ban you from dating and that solves all problems?” He offered grinning at her, he was hardly above doing that given he felt that no one was going to measure up for his sisters.

“Its okay, no need to be sorry.”"I guess..." Isla shrugged miserably, thinking that, not only had she brought up painful memories, but she'd ruined the spirit of the evening. “They do mostly and besides so do the beer belly guys much better option for you.”"Yeah," she managed a smile, knowing he was trying to smooth things over and cheer her up, "that makes them bounce back, right? Kind of like a Weeble? They wobble but they don't fall down..." "Or I just ban you from dating and that solves all problems?”"Honestly, I think that might be best." Letting out a breath, she leaned against his chest and closed her eyes. "After Jerkface, I think you're right, just stay an old maid." Besides, look at what had happened to their mother after their father had died... "No love, no loss, right? I can't help but wonder how different things might have been if Dad..." No sense dwelling on what might have been, right? Still, it was something she did almost daily, she couldn't help it. Steven Hudson,

Steven was still trying to smile, there was no easy way to talk about things but he wanted at least a few memories to be good ones. “See now you’re getting into it, can’t get hurt if you bounce.” He added grinning; oh there were a few guys he wanted to bounce right out of the firehouse at times but then again. It was better to live and let live, until they dated his sister then all bets were off.
Steven wrapped his arms around Isla and nodded. “Oh you’re fine being an old maid; I’m not going to tell you otherwise. That way there’s a lot less stress over who you’re seeing, trying to not go and give them a talk and yeah single is best.” He said grinning not really wanted to encourage any sort of dating at all.
Grinning as Steven thought about life if their dad was still around. “And you think I’m bad, pretty sure dad would have kicked any guys butt that looked at you.” He said smiling, “Then again would you still have done what you did? Be a nurse?” He asked her curiously. He always figured he would be a paramedic, more so now than when his dad was around but maybe he would have gone further as a mechanic.
He had no idea but then their mum would be happy and still doing her thing, going home to visit would be different and he would likely have kicked himself out of the house rather than never leaving it.

“Oh you’re fine being an old maid; I’m not going to tell you otherwise. That way there’s a lot less stress over who you’re seeing, trying to not go and give them a talk and yeah single is best.”"What do you mean, 'the talk'?" Swatting his arm playfully, she give him an incensed look, although despite the fact that she was teasing, she really did dread him talking to a prospective paramour. “And you think I’m bad, pretty sure dad would have kicked any guys butt that looked at you.”"Good point." She nodded, thinking on how Steven had a knack for making a somber topic light, and she appreciated that trait in him. “Then again would you still have done what you did? Be a nurse?”"Dunno," she mused, shrugging. "I mean, probably...I hate pushing paper and being stuck in a office-type place." Court stenographer had been something to keep her supported through school, and it wasn't something she wanted to do forever...and it was far from a traditional secretary-type job. "Maybe a teacher...elementary or pre-school...but I really don't think it would have made a difference for me." Grabbing a fresh piece of pizza, she glanced over at him. "What about you? You're the one who went for the excitement and pretty red fire engines...what else would you have done?" Funny, she'd never thought about that before...Steven was a firefighter/paramedic and she couldn't imagine him doing anything else. Steven Hudson,

“The talk you know... the one about life and how things work.” He teased laughing lightly seeing the incensed look though really, he wondered if he should have gone through things earlier. Then maybe seeing a fire-fighter as a good dating option would have been quashed. Steven only realised that downside because he worked with them, even as a medic it was risky and the last thing he wanted was to see any sister go the same way as their mother.
“Oh very good point, I mean I’d hate to have seen what he would have done. Strung them up by the ankles in the garage.” Steven said smirking at her before listening to her talk about being a nurse. Life might have been very different; maybe their father would have talked him out of being a paramedic. The garage was a line of work and the worst that happened was an unhappy customer. “Teacher huh, well you never know if the whole nurse thing doesn’t work out at least you have plan B.” He said smiling though there was no doubt in his mind that nursing was for her.
“Well you know what I’m like with red fire engines and flashing lights.” He said laughing for a moment as he thought about it. “I have no idea, might have been talked out of it but then again I could be elbow deep in grease right now under a car. Could have become a mechanic full time but I think it was that or firehouse but now I know what I know about fire-fighters... definitely on the side of the medics.” He said smiling not being able to see himself do much else.
He had never really tried much at it and doing what he did, he knew the job and knew the people for the most part. He loved what he did and despite the bad days there were good ones and great ones to go right alongside them. Paper pushing was his least favourite thing and he enjoyed fixing things, he just chose to patch up people and not engines this time.

“Teacher huh, well you never know if the whole nurse thing doesn’t work out at least you have plan B.”"Ugh, no," she muttered, "not if it means another six years of college! I'd rather just be a barista or something!" Not that she thought anything would go sour with the nursing, it really was a passion for her, and she couldn't imagine a reason why she'd leave it behind. If anything, she'd go on for her MA in nursing, but then, that would mean advancing to administration, and she had no desire to leave patient care behind. “Well you know what I’m like with red fire engines and flashing lights.”"That I do! Like a kid in a candy shop...Woo Woo Blinky Lights!" She laughed with him. “I have no idea, might have been talked out of it but then again I could be elbow deep in grease right now under a car. Could have become a mechanic full time but I think it was that or firehouse but now I know what I know about fire-fighters... definitely on the side of the medics.”"Ah, right, rescuing people from themselves!" Isla laughed. "Of course, you're usually elbow deep in grease anyway. But then, I honestly can see you doing something like...oh, day care? Molding mushy little minds. Or maybe an insurance salesman." Of course, she was teasing him, she honestly couldn't imagine her brother doing anything but what he was, and thought that anything else would be a waste of talent. “A barista now... well no offence but do you know how to make a good coffee?” Steven teased grinning, he doubted anything would go wrong with her nursing career. She was great at it after all and he never thought anything else. Steven figured Isla was that person who had a career that suited her, the one out of the group that seemed to know exactly what she wanted to do with things.
“Oh sure the blinky lights, how else was I going to pick my life’s work? I mean can’t have lights in a desk job unless I worked at a lamp shop.” He said thoughtfully for a moment, honestly he would never think of anything worse for him. The speed and excitement of what he did was balanced equally with a slow day and those were few and far between at times.
“Wait you’d trust me to mould minds... wow that is a big deal but insurance sales oh yeah imagine all the cookies and coffee I’d get from visiting people.” He said with a smirk. There were days when he figured a slower job would be nice or even a job where carpets were just carpets and not squishy. Those jobs, yes for all of five seconds would be great but then he knew he would be bored and he had finally managed to land on a sane streak with fifty one.
Things were turning out a lot better than he hoped and while sure things were tough at times, it seemed that everyone else was working out great too. “Who’d have thought it, maybe you should be a dental nurse... teeth are safer than an ER?” He suggested smirking as he nudged her lightly.

At the comment about coffee, Isla rolled her eyes, then stuck her tongue out at him. "It's all automated," she defended, "so they wouldn't have to rely on my skill." In all honesty, she wasn't particularly sure what she would do if not nursing. Sure, she had suffered through the court recorder thing, had done stints as a waitress and receptionist, but those had been a means to an end, a way of getting by while she went to nursing school. "Dental assistant?" Her nose wrinkled up as she frowned. "No way! I can't imagine staring into someone's gaping maw all day and chipping at plaque!" She'd almost rather stick with recorder! "Nah, I'd be a vet tech and bring home tons of injured and handicapped animals, and pawn some of them off on you." She gave him a playful nudge. "You know you'd want them, and then I'd fall in love with Mr. Veterinarian and get married and have kittens that you could babysit." Laughing, she grabbed another piece of pizza and started munching on it. "Sounds perfect, if you ask me...although the fireman thing is still on the table if the vet falls through!" Except that, in all honesty, she was not in any hurry to get married. Steven Hudson

“I’ve seen you trying to see if the light goes out in the fridge when the door shuts before... I’d worry for the robots safety.” Steven teased lightly. Of course he knew better but then everyone had a sneaky peek to see if the rumours were true? Steven had been surprised by her court recording job, mostly because he knew his sister hated it and though he knew you were unable to pick the job you loved. He at least expected a one down from that.
He had done the whole mechanic thing to work through college and keep the family going when he was younger but now, being a paramedic was the world he loved and was used to. There was no changing it even on the worst day there. “Woah I work too much for pets, kids or people in general. No way I could look after a living thing. You’re lucky if the house plant’s survive the week.” He said smirking, though most of that was true.
“Okay no chance at all, no Kittens, no Mr. Veterinarian, no guys at all. Told you, you’re off limits to a lot of people. Maybe I’ll just call a no on the whole of Chicago?” He offered and actually right then it sounded like the very adult thing to do. No men, no sister problems. “No firemen at all, paramedics, no, or lets just say men in general are off the table for you. If you find one you like and I know about it, I’ll chase him down the street. How does that sound?” He asked grinning nodding to the not getting married thing.
He had done that once himself, the remainder of which hung around his neck like a reminder of what might have been. One car accident later and he was wifeless, two decades later and finding another person. Too risky.

"No paramedics, firefighter, cops...men?" Nose wrinkled up, Isla looked over at him. "So...chicks? Not my sort, but I guess in a pinch a hot chick and a cucumber will do." Her cheeks burned hotly, but her own embarrassment was worth it to annoy her big brother! "And...no Chicago? Guess that makes my Cupid-dot-com and Eharmony accounts all the more important now...I'm sure I can find someone out of town, maybe even in Illinois." She gave him a challenging look. "Maybe someplace like Denmark or Malta, and I can just move there!" Of course, she never would move that far, if she even decided to leave Chicago, but this was banter, she was poking the bear with a stick! Steven Hudson,

Steven stared at his sister, honestly there were days when he was surprised she was a grown up and all it took was a semi serious conversation about men to make him blush. “Whatever it is you want to do, I’ll stand by you but same applies for chicks too.” Steven said nodding as I chose to stuff a piece of pizza into his mouth before he got into hot water. If the heat in his face was anything to go by, he was in no hurry to put a colour or shade of red to his cheeks.
“Oh hell no, no internet do you even know how many crazies are online?” Steven stated shaking his head, at least if it was a fire-fighter he could kick their ass for doing anything wrong. Denmark was a flight away and around a half day of anger building up. “No moving, no men, no dating... nothing at all. You just go to work and come home; do I really need to ban the internet here?” Steven asked going into to full blown parent mode.
He might have even made a jibe about kids these days but Isla was far from a kid and if she was aiming to put him into early retirement. He could already feel the heartburn the conversation was causing. “Shouldn’t you be more focused on study right now? I mean serious?” He added deciding that if he kept her in school for the next forty years that might work out better. Too tired to try dating when you had to study twenty four seven.

"Aren't you the one who said to chill about studying for the test?" she challenged him, then stuck her tongue out at him. "That I know it all all ready, and if I don't, it's too late?" Caught in his own trap! She loved when she could pull that, since it wasn't often, usually it was the other way around. "As for chicks," she shrugged, "you'd steal them away, anyway, so that's not a viable idea." At that, she wrinkled her nose up. "No, don't want to compete with you for a Universal Companion, so, yeah, no chicks...not going to do your leg work for you. And," she grinned sweetly, "can you really say that the internet crazies are any worse than the one in the room right now? Hmmmm?" She munched on pizza for a moment, then asked, "What about you? You can't worry about me forever at the expense of your own life. You need a pretty lady and six kids I can be auntie to!" Steven Hudson

“Yeah I was but I am allowed to change my mind at any point.” Steven added, maybe that was the worst idea he had all day. Tell Isla to relax and have fun, be more literal and tell her what sort of fun and not to involve others at all. “Oh sure but there’s always extra time to cram in a few more pages of study.” He joked as he laughed. “I ever tell you you’re too smart for your own good huh.”
Honestly, times like this he wished that he had some sort of backup. A parent that could actual parents and give him the out he needed. “Never thought of that, my sister as my wingman... pretty great idea there you’ve got.” He said chuckling, well if it worked it worked and who was he to complain about that? “Ouch I don’t see any crazies in this room, do you? Besides why not do the leg work for me, that way at least I get to know if they like you first.” He joked as he grinned.
He hated when Isla had a point though as far as things were now, he guessed now was a good enough time. “Who said I don’t have a lady and six kids already that you don’t know about?” He joked, “I mean I might have a serious lady right now, just seeing how it goes first.” Steven was as serious about Alyssa as he could get though intruding her to the family. He was uncertain until he was sure about that step, sure in his own mind that was.
