Steven smirked as he chuckled and nodded glad that Isla had taken the money, honestly his sisters really needed to just accept his money. It saved trying to think of more devious ways to try and make sure they were okay. Steven watched Isla behind the wheel; he was hardly as nervous seeing her drive his baby than he was in the death trap she called a car before. Even if she did turn it pink he could live with the fact he knew it was only cosmetic and the car was at least safe and from the current century.
Steven went to sit behind the wheel of his new car, there was a twinge of guilt in the fact he thought he had gotten it for his sister. It was a lovely car and sure one he might have gotten had he not been so focused on the practical and safety aspects of life. Sitting in it now he could barely hide the smile on his face as he drove off to go and get the ice cream and moon pies.
It hardly took long to swing by the store for the things he needed, grabbing a few extras by way of a celebration for when he knew Isla had passed her exams. Going home to grab his bag and things for a stay over he made sure the house was in order and their mother was as put together as she could be before he left.
Turning up at Isla’s door he decided to knock as he balanced the ice cream and moon pies with his bag under one arm. He usually kept an overnight bag packed for work, more than one just in case he managed to get caught on a double shift or he found the need to shower whatever gunk off at work he managed to find that day.
At least that night he knew Isla had a better car, safer and he know it was hardly going to conk out in the middle of traffic. He had ice cream and moon pies and hopefully would be able to stomach the dvd choice unless it was a rom com. No amount of moon pies and ice cream could be able to fix that at all he thought as he waited.

It hadn't taken long for Isla to gather the provisions she needed, and while she wanted some time to drive the car a bit more and get to know how it handled, as well as 'personalizing' it, she wanted to get home before her brother. When she got there, she tossed the ice cream in the freezer, did a quick spruce-up, making sure that undies and bras were out of sight, then popped 'Princess Bride' into the DVD player...Steven was going to be thrilled, after all, it had swashbuckling and fighting...well, there was the kissing, too! At the knock, she ran over and flung the door open, grinning widely. "Oh, good, you're here! Hurry before my brother...Oh, hi, Steve..." She gave him a teasing smile...let him wonder! "Come on in." Steven grinned seeing Isla there, well at least that was one thing sorted. She was actually in the building, that was until he got the response of being the wrong person. “Wait what... who were you waiting for?” He asked trying to decide who he needed to go and harass right then. Yes he knew his sisters dated but that was hardly the issue, the issue was when he arranged to come around and there was someone else being snuck out before ‘the brother’ saw who it was.
Even her teasing smile said he had walked into a scene of some kind as he took a few steps inside. “You know you can always tell me to leave if you want to bring whoever it is over?” Steven explained angling for information on the subject. “Remind me who it is again, Dave right?” Sure he just picked a random name from the sky but then hopefully it could persuade Isla to give up the information on the newest guy. If there was a guy, well there had to be given how they needed to hurry before he even got there.
“Oh pizza and moon pies.” He said placing a few of the things on the counter top as he placed his bag at the side of the room. “So think we got everything for a take your mind off the test night?” He asked grinning at her. Steven had every faith she would pass, Isla had studied long enough to know the textbooks backwards so in his mind there was no doubt. It just depended on the will of the world that day, strange he knew but since he had done the job of paramedic Steven knew that fate had a way of working out no matter what the situation.

“Wait what... who were you waiting for?”Isla stood back to let her brother come in, then shrugged and shook her head. "I don't know what you're talking about," she declared with an innocent look. She was pleased, and a little surprised that he actually thought she was serious, after all, her love-life had been pretty dry, what with studying and all, not to mention rotten luck. Of course, she wasn't actively hunting, either. “You know you can always tell me to leave if you want to bring whoever it is over?”"Eh...too late now, you're already here." She shrugged, leading the way to the kitchen, as if that was necessary, since the living room and kitchen sort of melded into each other...and the 'bedroom' was part of it all. Soon, she hoped to get into a one-bedroom place and out of this 'junior studio'. “Remind me who it is again, Dave right?”"Yeah, yeah, Dave...you know, he's at Station Nine on 'B' shift..." May was well poke at her brother, given the chance. Station Nine was a rival, and there was that saying, 'I'd rather have my sister be a whore than date a guy on 'B' shift!' "Don't worry, though, he's hiding under the bed!" Well, 'under the bed' was more of an expression, since she had a bunk-type bed that had desk and storage space under it. “Oh pizza and moon pies.” He said placing a few of the things on the counter top as he placed his bag at the side of the room. “So think we got everything for a take your mind off the test night?”"We can give it a try!" Isla laughed as she set out paper plates...no dishes tonight! "Pizza smells good...just don't look when I smuggle some under the desk!" She fiddled with the TV, bringing up 'Guardians of the Galaxy', then flopped on the couch. "Wonder if we can make a Moon Pie pizza! What do you want to drink? I'd have a beer, but then, I'd just fall asleep and defeat the point." Steven Hudson,

Was she joking with him, “Hmmm yeah you know exactly what I’m talking about.” Steven stated knowing that innocent look all too well. Isla’s love life, Steven preferred to steer clear until the point a guy showed interest and then it was full on brother mode. He thought his father might approve of that but it was his job to make sure his sisters were happy one way or another. The right guy was the right guy but he wanted to make sure it was his right guy too.
Steven followed Isla through to the kitchen as he nodded; maybe it was a good thing he turned up when he had as he glanced around her place. If there was a someone else then there would be signs of that he was sure as he listened to her talk about a Dave. “Serious... Nine and B shift, Isla are you kidding me!” Steven stated wondering if she had taken a knock to the head. “He has at least five girlfriends a month, asks at least three to marry him and has two on the go that overlap.” Like hell Dave was getting anywhere near his sister.
Hearing he could be under the bed he glanced over at Isla, there was storage under her bed. It was a practical bed he knew that much as he glanced at his sister. “You know pay back can be mean.” Steven added smirking for a moment as the conversation turned to food again. “You really need to come back home, I live off paper plates, no dishes and biodegradable to save the planet too.” He added grinning as he laughed. “Sure you go do that, I’ll make sure Dave doesn’t walk for a month if he is there.”
It was a light threat, one he was more than happy to carry out when it came to family. Sure any fire-fighter that wanted to date Isla could he had no issue with that it was more the his sister part of it. That he had an issue with and he wanted a lawyer or doctor or billionaire for his sister. A guy that would be nice to her and give her everything she wanted, Dave was far from his idea of the perfect guy.
Seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Steven grinned, “Sure well we can make it and then see if it sells.” He said though he liked both but he was unsure how it would go together. “Sure I’ll drink the beer and you can have the none alcoholic stuff. Can’t be blaming me for getting you drunk the night before.” He added as he pulled a beer from the fridge and a can of juice for Isla as he passed her it and sat back on the couch.

|| TAG: ,|| WORDS: 0 || || NOTES: ... || "Ugg, no! Don't need a hangover on top of everything else!" Taking the drink, Isla shook her head. Not that she'd ever really been drunk. In all honesty, she just didn't like the taste of alcohol that much, and more, she wasn't willing to give up control to the drug. A few times as a teen she'd seen friends get so plastered that they couldn't remember where they'd been or what they'd done, and in her nursing training she'd seen the results, when totally wasted kids were just left behind by their friends, passed out, unaware, so that anyone could do anything. Sometimes it ended well, sometimes not, and Isla wasn't going to ever let herself get into that position. She reached for the pizza, handing Steven a piece before taking one for herself, then she leaned back and started munching. "And I promise not to ask a bunch of questions during the movie." She'd seen it before and enjoyed it for what it was, but she still had no idea what an Infinity Stone was and why it was so important! "So, did you feel like this before your National Registry? You aced that, right?" Well, her big brother aced everything! Steven Hudson, “Wow look at you being all sensible, how are you related to the family again?” Steven teased grinning as he was glad she made the right choice. So offering her a hangover for the next day before a test, it might not be his greatest idea but it was a distraction. It was what he had been ask to do so so far he was achieving it.
Alcohol was practically every weekend shift he ever took; it was a nightmare so encouraging it was hardly his thing. Not unless he wanted a whole lot of paperwork and a big clean up job. He was always amazed at the reasons, the friends that left and the way people seemed to think bad things would never happen to them. They were too wise and sensible which was the general drift of drunk talk beyond the wanting to fight any object that came within ten feet.
Steven took the piece of pizza handed to him as he smiled eating gladly. Something about terror, zip lining and fresh air made him hungry. “Hmmm, I give it a half hour before you ask your first question... I know you too well.” He teased grinning as he knew she had seen it but then, it was a tough one to explain. Infinity stones, war and aliens with a side of Azgard. The movie spoke for itself.
“Oh sure I did, totally aced it.” Steven admitted grinning, “Aced it after staying up all night panicking, and falling asleep for two hours then panicking some more. Sure I aced it, nothing that caffeine and fear can’t fix.” He said knowing he had practically freaked out before his test. Not so much the test side but the, if I fail I’m done side of things. A second round paramedic maybe he could have done it second time but he was glad he had it over and done with.

"Great, that instills so much confidence, you have no idea." Laughing, she leaned back and tucked her legs under her, then started munching on her pizza. "I know I'll do good, it's in the DNA, right?" She probably sounded more like she was trying to convince herself. "Just do what I know and know what I do." And actually, while she had planned on spending the day with her nose stuck in books, the day had been fun and relaxing, she had a 'new' car, and she knew Steven was right (although she'd never admit it), more studying wasn't going to help anything, she either knew the material or didn't and stressing wasn't going to change that. And she felt pretty relaxed, all things considered. "So," she asked around pepperoni bites, "what are you going to do for me when I pass? And why can the racoon talk?" Steven Hudson,

“Great now I know I’m doing the best job I can.” Steven agreed chuckling as he grinned. “Isla you will do great at it, you’re right it’s in your DNG and better than that I am pretty sure you have your entire family behind you rooting for you.” Steven added knowing that she would do well, if it came down to study then Isla had it in the bag already as he nodded. “Exactly, relax about it because you know it already and if I was ever in the hospital, there’s no better nurse than you and if you say I ever said that... i’ll deny it.” Steven added.
Study only did so much sometimes you just had to let your brain think less and just forget about it. Over studying never worked for him and sure it was common sense a lot of it and he knew Isla had a lot of that. Taking a bite of the pizza Steven shrugged hearing the question about what he was going to do when she passed. “For when you pass I might have something in mind but then you’ll need to pass to figure that out or I might just say well done and that’s it.” He teased, so sure he had a party planned, the cake was already at the bakers with the order ready to collect once she knew and a few other things here and there.
He could at least get her a bigger apartment or still try to convince her to come home again. “See I knew it, question one. The racoon talks because he’s the coolest of the bunch, the tree talks too but only says one thing.” Steven explained trying not to laugh. “Let’s just hope there are no Galaxy questions on your test huh.” He said as he nudged her lightly.

"Oh, I know Groot....he is 'Groot'!" She laughed, "And Sky Lord, of course, the sexiest man on the planet....or, the Black, right? Not just Earth!" She gave her brother a teasing look, letting him decide if she knew what she was talking about. She bit into her slice of pizza and sighed. "Pizza is brain food, right? And ice cream just reinforces that, so I'm good." Slumping down in the chair, she glanced sideways at Steven. "So, a surprise, huh? That's pretty good incentive to pass, but then, I don't know what I'll do with all my time if I don't have to study non-stop...pick on you more, I guess!" There was actually a good bit of truth in that, the last several years had been study and work, and now, she would only have work and tons of free time, not that she thought she would get bored. "Or, I could coax you into learning some parkour...you know, like running up walls and jumping off roofs..." Steven Hudson

Steven clapped his hands as he laughed, “There is holy power that can let my sister remember Groot.” He teased as he winced about Sky Lord. Sure he had two sisters talking about guys was a given but then to think one of his favourite movies he was going to have to look at the guy and think. Yeah Isla finds him sexy, oh please. “I’ve no clue what you’re on about Sky Lord is just Sky Lord. Gamora however... yeah she’s sexy.” Steven teased right back, of if that was the way things were going he could give as good as he got.
“Yup, I’ve taught you well grasshopper.” Steven added when she spoke about pizza and ice cream. Two things he loved and also were practical meals when he came off a shift. No muss and no fuss. “Oh it’s a good surprise, might even include a cruise holiday too.” He added not sure but then again he could always swing by a travel agents. “Oh bring it on, pick on me more but you’ll be too busy as a nurse to bother about that, hear the shifts are pretty full on.” He added grinning.
“Parkour, you’re lucky that I don’t ban you from doing that. I always think one of my calls will be you saying I fell of a wall come and get me. But thanks but I cannot be coaxed into throwing myself off a wall or roof, I’m happy with burning buildings and car wrecks.” Steven said, even the thought could send a shiver down his spine as he said it. “Why couldn’t you pick a less dangerous hobby, piano or yoga.” He added.

"Of course I know Groot, he's the best!" Isla rolled her eyes, then laughed. "And a cruise, huh? You know I've always wanted to see the Mayan ruins in Costa Maya and Cozumel...and they've got great beaches, too!" Well, she didn't want to go too rat into it, since it was going to be a surprise, but if he really did this, she would be happy that he would end up taking some time and going on a vacation, something he really needed and deserved, but would never do for himself. "Piano, huh?" She munched more pizza then smiled. "Yeah, I might do that, once I pass my boards, I'll be able to afford a bigger place, so there will be room. I can get lessons, and you can come to my recital....hmm...what song..?" There was a brief pause, and then she grinned, belting out, quite off-key: "I'm hooked on a feeling I'm high on believing That you're in love with meeeee!""How's that? Great idea, piano!" “See now you’re talking my language.” Steven teased chuckling as he nodded. “Yeah a whole cruise, not even a one way one.” He added as he listened to what Isla wanted to go and see. “Wow and here was me thinking it was just around the bay but you know if you want to go that far.” He added grinning; sure he was hardly going to just send her out on a boat in Chicago. No a Costa Maya cruise would be great on the given that she passed her exams.
“Ouch yeah I’m glad that you’re not moving back home, I mean lessons can be painful... though sure I’d come to the recital.” He added laughing hearing the off key version of Hooked On A Feeling. “I take it all back; I think a baby piano or an electric one where it can be pre-programmed for our own safety...” He said as he nudged her lightly laughing.
“I might have to book you singing lessons too, maybe flute lessons and guitar just to keep you busy with all of this spare time you’ll have.” He added grinning, “or I can just rope you into to coming around for dinner more often. See your poor old brother a little more?” He added laughing, between both work schedules it was tough to keep up with any if not most family members these days. There were some days he barely knew what he was doing let alone anyone else. It made it all fun though.

"Oh, don't you worry any, I'll find plenty to do with my free time!" The concept was intriguing, it had been years since she'd had much time to do anything besides working, studying and housework, so the idea of having days that weren't inherently pre-planned was actually nice. "But sure, I'll come over and harass you for dinner, no problem there!" But then her nose wrinkled up as she asked, "Take out, right? I mean, not your cooking? I'm going to be exposed to enough goobers at the hospital, I don't need anything extra!" Laughing, she dodged any smacks that were headed her way. Truth was, Steven was a pretty good cook, even if his repertoire was limited, but if had always been fun to needle him about it. "Of course, you do make a pretty mean instant oatmeal!" Steven Hudson

“Yeah that is what I was worried about.” Steven said pondering all the things that you could do with free time. When it came to family there were moments when all he wanted to do was keep his sisters indoors where no one could find them or hurt them. Now Isla was about to have ‘free time’ and that was something that made him nervous. Steven trusted her it was the world he knew better than to trust but he had to at least let her live at some point in life.
“Oh great, just what I need, more harassment in my life.” He joked as he nodded glad to hear she’d be over for dinner. “Hey I know you love my cooking, it’s about time you lived on real food and not two minute noodles or something to heat in a pan. You remember real food right?” He said smirking at her as he laughed, some meals were dangerous for him to cook but then again how much worse than noodles could it really get?
“I knew you liked oatmeal, I mean sure seven days a week I might have overdone it a little but knew you enjoyed it.” I say as if he had won the lottery as he laughed, nudging her arm lightly. “I might start to bring you bowls of it by, just in case you need some extra.” He said laughing, well if oatmeal was all it took then it was something he could do by the bucket load.

“Hey I know you love my cooking, it’s about time you lived on real food and not two minute noodles or something to heat in a pan. You remember real food right?”"Of course I remember real food!" Grinning, Isla raised a piece of pizza, loaded with pepperoni and cheese. "Pizza and ice cream, that's real, right?" Of course, now that she thought about it, there were things that had been staples when they were kids that she missed, and he was right, she would be glad now that she had the time to really cook again. “I knew you liked oatmeal, I mean sure seven days a week I might have overdone it a little but knew you enjoyed it.”"Gruel," she grumbled with a grin. “I might start to bring you bowls of it by, just in case you need some extra.”"Uh huh, and I might start dropping by the station in the morning to mooch food from all those sexy hunks of firemens there!" Isla looked deadly serious as she nodded slowly. "Yeah, I think that would be a great way to get the day started...and make a connection with some sexy beefcake." Glancing at Steven, she added, "I like the way you think, setting me up without coming right out and saying it. Thanks!" Steven Hudson
