“Oh if he did partner, I’d be driving. Enclosed space with that guy nope... too much for me today.” He teased though he grinned right back at her. “Oh he does but not the ladies I work with, sure I can be a nightmare but leaving you with that guy... I’d have to call SWAT to get you out of there.” He added climbing into the ambulance as took the bottle of antiseptic gel offered to him and repeated the process.

Nope he was barely even going to look at his shoes, the ambulance was about to get the deepest clean it had ever seen once they were back. “I wonder alright but yes filth is a choice and no I doubt he does because... that carpet I’m sure there could have been living things in it among the dead.” Steven added shivering a little at the thought.

“Crazy job, crazy day but you know at least we got offered cookies... dangerous ones yes but not many people would do that for us.” Steven added grinning, “But if you ever need a date for the Fire-fighter ball... you know the address you need to go to. Sure his jive might be slow but at least you get cookies right?” He offered chuckling as he started up the ambulance and pulled back out onto the street debating if he needed to drown himself in antiseptic gel.

"Ah, right, a dream-date." Kelle laughed. "Make me Belle-of-the-Ball!" She grinned as she slathered on more cleanser. "I wonder what people like that were like when they were young? You know, some people are just always oogy and some get that way from circumstance. Me, when I'm old and living under the overpass with my sixteen cats, I'll still be organized and fairly clean."

Her grin widened. "And I'll call 911 all the time..." Her voice morphed to a high squeak. "Yes, operator, my arthritis is acting up again. Can you send that nice boy Steve over here to take me to Olive Garden?"

Laughing, she clipped on her seat-belt. "Then I'll tell you all about my days as a paramedic and the perfect partner I was!"

Steven could only imagine what the man was like when he was younger, then again given what he had seen he could only wonder if it had been the same back then too. “So that’s your address, I’ll make a note for when I’m still working in this thing screaming at my partner that I can’t see what colour the light is and we’re going anywhere because I forgot where the brake was too.” He teased grinning at her for a moment though a quiet overpass with cats sounded like a good choice.

“Awww well for you Steve would be more than happy to, if you would be able to get into this thing under your own power. No way I’d be lifting and I’d be one of those fifteen miles per hour driver in a thirty zone because it would seem to be so fast.” He joked, “But yeah you could be my frequent flyer any day.”

Steven chuckled as he put more of the cleanser on, he felt like his own skin was crawling or even alive and infested though he knew it was all in his head. “The perfect partner huh, well I’m all ears to that one? I’ve been through a lot so I can tell you what the worst partners were all day long.” He joked though it was true; he had been through enough of them to know what the usual was. The grumbling, glares and then the slam of the door when they would inevitably run to the chief and he was back on rotation for another partner.

"You just have amazingly high standards," Kelle commented with a grin, then she shrugged. She really hadn't been around long enough to make too much judgment on partners, although her ride time during her internship had exposed her enough to know that there were some jerks doing this just to play 'hero' and use the siren, and others who just wanted to show you how good you'd never be.

But when it came to patient care, they sucked...they didn't care about the patient, or the family who was going through stress too, and they could be rude to the cops or nurses and doctors at the hospital simply because they thought their 'shit didn't stink'.

And that could really make life miserable. Not only that, it reflected on you, and it was hard to get people to understand that that wasn't the way you were.

"Anyway, if you decide to keep me, I promise not to say anything bad about you in my diaries, not to piss off the cops when we need them, to do my share of lifting, and not to fart with the windows closed!"

“Amazingly high standards, I will have to get you to tell my sisters that.” Steven said with a grin, oh of course there was always then ten million standards he had let slip but it was nice to hear as he laughed chuckling. Steven knew the partners that were no good, have a go hero’s who wanted the praise and thanks for just doing their job but Kelle seemed like a good one to have. She had sense which was more than could be said for a lot of people these days.

All be it his sister was a nurse so being rude to them, no even before that Steven had never been rude to a nurse. A doctor sure if they were about to make a stupid choice, yes he was a paramedic but sometimes there were things they knew about a patient that made a snap choice by a doctor wrong. It was rare but it happened and then Steven was more than happy to argue that point out.

“Oh I think I’ll keep you around, you know as long as you’re happy to stick around?” Steven asked grinning, “Besides if I can feature in someone’s diary, it’s worth it.” At the mention of cops, oh he could only imagine how many toes they would step on there but then cops were highly strung at times. Stepping on their toes, it was more a rite of passage than an necessity.

“If you fart with the windows closed then you’re on the roof for life but the lifting unless I’m dead I can give you a hand with it.” Steven added grinning, “The cops though... try not to poke them too much but then they are fun to toy with just choose your play thing carefully. Anything with the name Voight is a danger to humanity to toy with.” Steven said as he had never made a joke with that man, no it was big enough mess that day to start with so messing with that guy was a headache waiting to happen.

“Oh I think I’ll keep you around, you know as long as you’re happy to stick around?”

"How else am I supposed to harass you if I don't stick around?" Looking at him sweetly, Kelle grinned. But actually, so far, she didn't have any major issues, and she really did hate chancing a new partner.

“Besides if I can feature in someone’s diary, it’s worth it.”

"Right...Dear Diary, Steven doesn't like my farts..." She laughed.

“If you fart with the windows closed then you’re on the roof for life but the lifting unless I’m dead I can give you a hand with it.” Steven added grinning, “The cops though... try not to poke them too much but then they are fun to toy with just choose your play thing carefully. Anything with the name Voight is a danger to humanity to toy with.”

"Voight, got it...no pain meds for Voights!" Her grin widened at the threat, although she'd never really withhold pain medication from someone who needed it. Then her nose wrinkled up. "Wasn't there one of them at the docks tonight? At least one..?" 'Tonight' actually being last night, but it was still the same shift, so technically, the day hadn't really changed for them!

“Yeah I guess long distance harassment is more trouble than it’s worth. Better to do it in person.” He said chuckling. It was good to know she seemed like she was staying around, Steven hated new partners mostly because he had gotten tired of trying to teach them over and over again.

New partner, new name, new problem, new day and then the cycle started all over again. It was funny how in the beginning he was fine with having the reputation of being crazy but it had worn thin when people thought he actually was. No there was a reason behind it all though they only had to ask.

Steven laughed when he heard what she might put in her diary, well at least he was feature he thought. Farts or not though then again if anyone else read it maybe it was odd. “Yeah they are insane enough Voights, they don’t need any help there.” He said grinning, “Yeah two were actually, Hank and Sharon but if there are two Voight’s make sure to keep your head down. One Voight, make sure you run for the hills.” Steven explained.

“I owe the guy a few favours but he is insane, a good guy to have on your side but don’t be fooled. He is nuts.” Steven warned sure that if given half a chance Hank would prove his theory more so than the explosion on the docks had.

"Aren't we all?" Kelle glanced at him with a grin. "At least to one degree or another. But she could see that there was an unsettled seriousness to his demeanor and she nodded. "Steer clear of Hank Voight, and if I can't, kiss up and play sweet."

She could do that easy enough. Heck, there were some of the old school 'leather lung' firefighters who thought that women had no business in any of this and let you know it. But she'd quickly learned that if she smiled sweetly and was gushy-nice and complimentary, then anything negative they tried to say or do just made them look like the jerks they were.

"Doesn't sound like the kind of guy you want to be owing," she commented, then she looked at him with a skeptical smirk. "Those favors don't involve selling your partner into slavery of anything, do they?"

“I guess we all are but they take the biscuit and the rest of the packet in the crazy stakes.” Steven said with a grin though he was serious about it. “If you can’t steer clear of him send me instead, his ‘favours’ are deadly at times you saw what happened with that boat. It’s not the sort of the guy you want to be asked to do something for.”

Steven was a little protective of his partners and the fact that Kelle was still there so far, it was a testament to the fact that he would only get more so as time went on. Sure being a woman in the fire house was tough, he had seen what happened to others thought fifty one was all inclusive though other houses he knew could be tough. Still he knew he would stick up for any woman going through a tough time but Hank Voight was one of the old school types.

The hit them with a phone book until they say the right thing sorts. Not that Steven was against it in some cases but there was a time and a place for it. “No he’s not but he’s the sort of guy you want on your team.” Steven said seeing the sceptical smirk. “Oh you know about that deal for later then? And to think I only got an energy drink and a granola bar for my troubles... need to find a better market to deal in.” He said with a sigh chuckling.

"Yeah, well, the reward should fit the deed, right?" Kelle grinned, teasing, but was smart enough to know when to keep her mouth shut and when to walk away, at least she thought so. But then, she didn't have a devious mind, so she knew she needed to tread softly and just stay out of trouble.

"Well, you know, I'm sweet and demure," she batted her eyes at him, "and I can fake it really well, so you don't have to worry about me pissing anyone off, especially a cop, but if I do, I'll be sure to hide behind you!"

Although, honestly, Fire, EMS and Law were all allied agencies, and while there were friendly rivalries, in the big picture, they were 'family', and when the chips were down, they looked out for each other...at least, that was her starry-eyed belief.

"Don't worry, I'll do my best to stay out of trouble and be polite...I don't need any trouble in my life, and I'd hate to reflect on you, especially since you're stuck with me for a long time...I think!"

“Oh sure it should, just not sure what the reward is for all of this yet.” Steven said chuckling then again, he had managed to find a pretty great partner out of the mess that had been that day so really. How could he complain about any of it, when he had chocolate, coffee, bacon and a good partner that seemed like they might stick with him despite the crazy he could dish out at times.

“So thanks I guess, you’d shove me under the bus faster than take it on yourself... guess I really know who you are now.” Steven teased laughing, “Then again I get on with everyone so you should never have an issue like that... you know until we stray outside of maybe... one or two cops I do like.” He added laughing pretty sure there were a few that might hate him for choices made on the job.

Steven knew how it worked, if one of them was hurt then sure you had an entire city after you. If you managed to annoy one of them while working, then sure it might end up in a spat and a measuring contest of who could do more. Then again he had enough of that with the fire-fighters at the twenty first.

“Exactly, I need no such reputation as being awkward to work with. I am an angel so you just be polite and stay out of trouble and we’ll be working this ambulance for life or until we take one squishy floor too many.” He said grinning.

"Well, I plan on doing my best to avoid squishy floors, that's for sure!" Kelle grinned. "And as long as the guys in the station keep paying me to pretend like I like working with you, I'm just happy and fine!"

Actually, so far, except for the whole explosion thing, she was enjoying working with him and they seemed to be on the same wave-length, although she wasn't sure that was a good thing or not! Time would tell, though, after all, they had to spend twenty-four hours together when they were together.

Still, he was looking out for her, and that had to count for something.

"And it's good to know you're beloved by everyone, I mean, I'd hate to be guilty by association, you know? But then, that might work both ways, huh? So people might start thinking that you're really sweet and kind...and smart...better be careful!"

“They are paying you now?” Steven said laughing, “So how much is it this time? The last one got at least a hundred bucks a day. How are you doing this time?” He teased though honestly he would never put it past anyone to do that. Extra hazard pay to work with him was more than likely.

Steven was enjoying working with Kelle, there had been no arguments or questions as to why he did what he did. Not that he minded those at all as he was there to help people learn but when it came to some things, Steven felt it was easier to just go with it. The less questions asked the better and what the grownups never knew it was likely safer for them all.

Sure twenty four hours together was hardly a life time but then usually it took less than three for people to transfer so he guessed he was doing reasonably well. By now he was usually saying good bye and wondering who he would be sitting next to on his next shift. So Kelle staying that had to count for something, maybe even forty eight hours of the same partner.

“Yeah I don’t want that reputation so we really need to make you evil, grumpy and totally unapproachable.” Steven said with a sigh as he chuckled, “But guilt by association might be more along the lines of questioning why you chose to work with me but if you can deal with that then you’ll make it. Besides I need to see your evil face just to make sure we can work on your evil grump side before anyone thinks I’m sweet and kind.” He said grinning.

"A hundred dollars a day?" Kelle looked at him in mock-disgust and shook her head. "Man, I settled for twenty a week and a free drink at some dive called 'Molly's'. I think I was gypped!"

She laughed then raised an eyebrow. "Evil face, huh?" Instead, she laced her fingers together and placed them under her chin, then batted her eyes. "Do you really think anyone would believe this face was evil?"

Then she had a thought and her grin really did take an evil glow.

"But you know, they] don't have to know we're getting along. How are you at taking a staged punch?"

She was still amped enough on caffeine and chocolate to play out a charade if he was up to it.

"After all, you do have a reputation to keep, right?"

“Ouch twenty wow times must be tough then.” He teased as he shook his head, “You were more than that, I mean twenty and free drink... hell if I had know that was all it took to pay a partner to say I might have made that trade myself.” If only it was that easy he thought to himself, it was a case of hello and goodbye all in one shift but this time he was enjoying his shift a lot more than usual.

“So cute... no there’s not a chance anyone would believe it but then that is your super power. No one would ever accuse you of being evil, so we need to work on it.” He teased grinning at her for a moment, the evil glow after helped in the sense that Steven felt there could be a bit of an evil streak afterward.

“Now we’re talking, I can take a staged punch if you’re up for that? And you’re right who would ever think I would get along with anyone really.” He teased laughing wondering what was going through her head right then. There were so many uses for staged punches but then if it kept letting her get the twenty dollars he might just keep it up.

“Exactly can’t go and ruin my reputation on the first shift, that’s just not done.” He said with a sigh, “Evil Steven must be present all times.”
