“Saved by the O- three hundred hours who’d have thought it.” He said grinning as he shrugged, “Morning, night, still not too sure but no the early hours are when people sleep including us. Because then what you get at 8am is DIY neighbours deciding to chop down trees.” He said though with him he hated early shifts followed by late ones as he always felt his timing for sleep was messed with though he hardly argued it. It took him long enough to get into routines as it was without morning being 3am.
Steven grinned as he looked at the food in front of him. “And this is why we are paramedics.” He stated firmly, “I’m glad because if you did... woah a Steven without chocolate is a grumpy one.” He said with a grin and he took a drink of his coffee. There was no denying there were certain perks to three in the morning food trips, it tasted so much better then.
“It’s good. Very very good.” He said laughing though with everything that had happened her giddy mood was a pleasant thing. He glanced up from his food as she asked about asking something, he nodded though he guessed with the speed of her question even if he said no she would have asked anyway. Then it was that question, Steven sat back in his chair and finished his mouthful of food before he nodded.
Well it was nice while it lasted he thought, she was a great partner and now she would run for the hills. “First things first, no judgement if after I explain that you want a transfer or an escape. I’m used to it. Second thing is and I’m not going to lie so yes I was arrested for assault.” He stated in a matter of fact tone as he sighed. There was no point in hiding things or letting her mind jump to conclusions about things.
“A few years ago my partner at the time and I got a call to go to a domestic disturbance. Police already on the scene.” He began to explain, “I knew I recognised the address but couldn’t place it. When we got there it was my sisters fiancé’s place. I knew before we had stopped what had happened and I snapped. The cops had the guy but I saw Isla and nothing was going to stop me, I threw a few punches ending up going through a window and then it was all over.” He said hoping that he could at least let her understand the why on his part.
“The good old justice system prevailed and I got a suspended sentence, two months suspension from work but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. My sisters are my family I have so I’d do anything for them, the guy deserved it in my mind and more but you know... Can’t go around hitting people because of what they do.” He said reciting something from an anger management course that he was forced to attend.
“The short version is I didn’t just attack someone for no reason, my family is mine to protect no matter what. Partner’s included in that but that was a special hopefully one off case.” He added not sure if he would be spending next shift with someone entirely new as he took a bite of his food again and waited to hear what she would say.

Kelle listened silently as he laid out his case, occasionally sipping her latte, pondering over his words. While what it did was wrong -- after all, the guy was in custody and not actively attacking his sister -- Kelle could fully understand why he did it.
"I think my brothers would do the same thing, honestly," she commented with a shrug, then took another bite of croissant. "And honestly, I mean, I've never had a 'real' boyfriend, not one I was serious about, but I've always thought that he'd get one shot at me, and after that, it would be 'game on'." She looked over at him. "How many women do we see who get the snot beat out of them, then say, 'Oh, but he's so sweet when he's not beating me'...and they never get out, no one ever gets them out...I hope your sister was strong enough to walk away, although I can't imagine you letting her stay."
Another bite of croissant, hoping that he didn't think she was looking at this too lightly, she knew about abusers and how they used psychological pressure to control their victims. But of course, that didn't mean that the situation with Isla had gone that far, if the guy had just turned out to be a jerk.
"And if she's anything like her big brother, I bet she's going strong."

For one day, in less than an hour and he had lost it and he learned his lesson. Not that it would keep him from doing it again if anything like that happened which he hoped and prayed it would not. Then again was there any line for family he would not cross, until it came to it he was still sure he could beat any guy that lay a hand on his sisters to a pulp.
Steven raised his brow when Kelle spoke about her brothers. “I know they would, it’s your sister you’re defending.” He said knowing how that felt. “You know since my dad passed I’ve always thought I’d be the one scaring off any guys, telling them they aren’t good enough and then that one... just one managed to do that to my sister and I never want either of them to date again. I might just lead any potential dates into a conversation about shotguns.” He said trying to decide if his sisters would speak to him again if he did.
“Too many times, ‘sweet, innocent, he said sorry’ she was lucky and yes she was strong enough to walk away. On her own too which I’m incredibly proud of her for.” He said with a smile, “And no you’re right, there’s no way I’d have let her say. Not with that monster not a second longer than she needed to.” He knew he had his own opinions on her might have been fiancé but to Steven the guy was a monster who he should have hit harder. Despite the suspension and legal system he did wish he had packed a better punch some days.
Steven took a drink before he continued to take a few bites of his food. Maybe it was the job that had made him a little crazy that day but it was his family that was in trouble. Had he been a cop would it be different, maybe but he regretted none of it. His sister was safe and free to live her life as she wanted. “Awww anyone would think you’re going soft on me Kelle.” He teased grinning, “But she is going strong, studying to become a nurse and is a court stenographer too so she’s the smart one out of the family.” He said with a grin.

"Well, that's not saying much," Kelle muttered, then she grinned and looked up at him, sticking out her tongue.
"That's good to hear, and you know," she commented more seriously now, "it just shows that someone raised her right, taught her that she shouldn't take any crap and should be strong." Shrugging, she took a drink of mocha yumminess. "You know, there are a lot of girls who think that getting married is what defines them...sure, they look at careers, they get jobs, but bottom-line they think that if they never get married they just aren't whole."
Not for her! She was happy the way she was, she'd be content if this was it. "I wouldn't mind finding 'him', falling madly in love, but I won't cry or stop living if that never happens," she explained, "and I know that he must be the right guy if I'm willing to let him move into my life!"
At that she laughed. "I'd have to find someone from the Funny Farm for that, though, who would want all those cats and dogs, and an old, crumbling house besides someone who was nuts? I mean, maybe..." Her cheeks turned pink as she shrugged, quickly changing the subject, reaching for a slice of crispy bacon.
"Bacon is the best!"

Steven laughed and shrugged, “Well I can be plainer about it.” He said as he stuck his tongue out right back at her. Steven was relieved to know that Kelle was still at the table and not on the phone to the chief requesting a new partner for the evening. Perhaps honestly really was the best policy when it came to explaining things which was where he had gone wrong with the last however many partners he was up to now.
He had never wanted his sisters to have to take any kind of crap, it was what he was there for to protect them and look after them though with Isla. She was a strong woman and he knew that it just felt like he had failed in protecting her from life in general. “Thanks but she’s the tough one and knows she doesn’t need to take any crap. Probably most of all from me.” He said grinning as he nodded. “Well being married, it works for some people and others... a piece of paper and a ring doesn’t define who a person is. It’s up to that person to know who they, married or not.” He said though he knew what Kelle meant.
Listening to Kelle Steven grinned and nodded, he had found that one person once and lost her too but he had found out that life went on no matter what happened. Right or wrong there was nothing better than the feeling of falling in love and finding that one person who meant everything. “See that is important, instinct with this sort of thing needs to be listened to. If the person is right then it will be, if they aren’t then... there are a lot more fish out there. Some not so great but others are pretty decent.” He said nodding knowing how difficult it was to find that one person. He had given up with dating a few years ago as he felt like that boat had sailed.
At least dating had turned to online for the most part and he had answered too many calls to care for putting anything on the internet. Steven grinned as her cheeks turned pink. “Well any man who gets you, the cats, dogs and an old crumbling house is one very very lucky guy.” He explained honestly, “If he says otherwise then send him my way and yes... bacon is the best. It should be a super food.” He said taking another bite of his food.

Blushing, Kelle shrugged, concentrating for a moment on her goodies, not quite sure how to reply to that. She could hold her own around the guys when they were kidding and joking, she could dish it out as well as take, she could be 'one of the boys', but when it came to being in a romantic relationship, well, it was complicated, at least in her head.
"I guess..." Looking at him, she grinned. "So, that makes you, like a stand-in brother, right? So I can bring any prospects to you for approval?"
While she gave him a quick, playful wink, there was a hint of seriousness in her tone, she really did need someone here with a level head who could be straight up with her, and who she could talk to about, well, anything.
"Sometimes it worries me that a guy is going to expect too much, or think I'm more..." Sighing, she shrugged. "I just don't know how to deal with that....and I'm getting loopy and tired, so just ignore me..." God, he didn't want to be Dear Abby! She was an idiot!

Steven grinned as he chucked noting the hint of a serious tone, “Yes I’d be the stand in brother any day.” Well Kelle was his partner after all what good was there if he was unable to threaten any perspective prospects she had. “Bring them my way and I will make sure they are right for you, name what scale you’d like. Anything from nice Steven to crazy Steven and you shall have you wish come true.” He added though really if anything happened to her nice Steven could easily by pass crazy and go straight into ballistic phase without a second thought.
He had no problem in being there for her or telling her if he thought a guy was creepy or odd or just not right. He would do that even if she never asked him to do it for the simple fact that he cared about his partner. So far Kelle was the only partner he had that had stuck around long enough for him to get to know a little and he liked that so if anything he was going to be protective of her. “Well anything you want or even if you want to talk, you know where I am.” He offered deciding that he could at least do that for her.
Steven nodded at what she was saying as he listened to her, loopy or tired he hardly minded at all. “No not going to ignore you at all.” He said with a grin, “The best sense is made at this time of the morning or day or night or time. Any guy that expects too much isn’t worth your time at all. You really don’t need to be anymore than you are because you’re a fantastic person and you put up with me so you’re practically a saint.” He stated taking a piece of bacon.
“Put it this way, if a guy can’t work at the speed you’re comfortable with then he needs to get lost. As long as you are yourself that’s all anyone can expect and if that isn’t what they are looking for it’s their loss not yours.” He stated simply, “And don’t think I don’t want to know what you think either, loopy or tired, we’re partners so we can talk right?” He said wanting her to at least be comfortable in talking to him.

"Yeah, yeah, we can." Grinning, she looked at him and nodded. That was truly a hallmark of a good partner, that you could share triumphs and troubles without being judged, and you could get or give an honest opinion without causing a rift. "Somehow, though, I doubt that's going to be a problem for a long time, anyway." Crossing her eyes, she scrunched up her face. "Who'd want to date Quasimodo anyway?" She started to laugh, but pretended that her face wouldn't unfold and was 'frozen' that way. "Dang! Should'a listened to my mom!" She was having a good time, and that was nice after the way the shift had gone earlier. Her face relaxed, and she took a bite of bacon and chocolate. "Whew! Glad that worked out! And man, I'll be happy when I get to drop into bed...I love the days off, but these twenty-four hour shifts can be killers." At least their paperwork was done and now it was just a matter of waiting...well, and hoping. But then they had a whole day off, so a few hours sleep and she'd have the afternoon free. And even better, one more shift and there was four days off! "I think I might do something fun on the days off...you know, miniature golf, bowling, something to really blow off the steam!" Steven shrugged, “Hey you never know what is around the corner. Our next call and you could find the best guy in the world, he might need rescued first but you never know.” He said positively. Yes he was hardly the most optimistic when it came to finding love and working all that out but then his track record had been a little iffy. Then again if he could find nothing to cause trouble in his life he always had his sisters to worry over and now Kelle too which made for a lot of work. Not that he minded at all as it gave him a purpose to scare potential suitors off.
He laughed seeing the face she pulled, “Without crossing harassment laws here but you’re the cutest Quasimodo I’ve ever seen.” He said with a grin as he nodded, “Oh always listen to your mother, eat your greens and you will grow into a giant. Eat your crusts and grow curly hair... failed on both counts.” He said chuckling, yes about the only thing he did believe was that carrots helped him see in the dark.
“You’re telling me, I’ll be happy when I can sleep for a week and not feel the effects of this shift.” He said with a grin, “Then again it’s a day off so do I want to miss that by sleeping?” He said pretending to ponder the question. Sleep did sound great but then a day off was gold dust though being too tired to enjoy it was the flip side of everything though he had nothing planned. It was the four days off that had him glad that the end was in sight.
“Living the high life, miniature golf and bowling huh.” He said smiling though both of those things were great. “I’m thinking do some running, annoy my sisters, maybe even do something absolutely daring... what I have no idea but I’ll think of something.” He said trying to think of talking a walk on the wild side of anything.

"Hey, you never need to worry about harassing me, all right?" She shrugged, grinning. "Besides, if you keep buying me treats, you can get away with a lot." Actually, she was pretty easy when it came to 'harassment'. So long as things didn't get crude, or cross a physical line, she could roll with it, unlike some females who screamed at the slightest joke or implication. It was part of being 'one of the boys' and in a male-dominated profession. And most of the men knew and respected the boundaries. "I'd think that harassing your sisters would be hazard enough," Kelle commented with a grin, "I mean, being a girl, I know how brutal we can be. But, yeah, I know what you mean about sleeping the day away, but on the other hand, trying to function while you're exhausted..." Laughing, she gestured to the table, "well, look at what we're doing at O'Dark thirty!...poor judgment!" Sighing, she shrugged. "Of course, I've got 'projects' around the house, so that's probably as exciting as things will get for me, but that's what happens when you buy something that's listed as 'charming'! Steven Hudson,

Steven grinned as he nodded to her. “Okay okay, just checking and if I do then just punch me okay.” He offered as he nodded. “Then I’ll keep the buying up, nothing better than chocolate at this time of night or day or really just hour... if they put that in IV form I’m first on that list.” He joked. Steven had boundaries, he never raised his hand to a woman and jokes as long as she was okay with them then he knew when to stop. Crude was never his thing, yes he joked along with things but mostly it was simply bad humour on the job.
The things that made the day pass or simply saying something that lightened the darkest of calls. To anyone outside it sounded awful but then they could see some pretty awful things. Humour was the only way at times. “This poor judgement... you must take that back. This is the best judgement all shift!” He stated laughing, “If I could spend a day doing this then I would be happy, probably calling 911 for a heart attack but I’d be happy at least.” In his head there was no poor judgement just coffee, chocolate and a long shift that felt as if it had been one crazy day.
“Oh, charming.” He said trying to imagine a house listed as that and not needed a few projects being done. “Charming is good, it adds character to a place and besides at least you can make it your own from the beginning.” He said knowing he had a few things to do but none of them were urgent.

"Eventually." Kelle shrugged, then laughed. "But I guess you're right, I've seen some renovations that were..." her nose wrinkled up, "well, atrocious, in my opinion. These beautiful old houses with all that history and 'character', and they modernize them, make them 'minimal', taking out the...well, the charm!" She laughed, shaking her head. "And with me doing the renovation, believe me, there's going to be plenty of charm...most of it crooked. But thank goodness for You Tube, so I know what I'm doing!" There was another laugh that morphed into a yawn, causing her to shrug. "Man, not that I mind your company, but this shift can be over any time it wants. I just hope we don't get anything else, I'm about done in!" There was only so much sympathy that she could muster in one day and as it got farther into the shift, it got harder and harder to be nice to some people. Despite the caffeine and sugar, she yawned again. "It's funny, isn't it, how the time drags when you just want it to hurry up and be done...or how it flashes by when you need more of it. And you do realize that if you had IV chocolate, you wouldn't be able to taste it, right?" And wasn't that half the fun? Steven Hudson,

“Glad we agree on that, old houses that creak have character. Every dent and slightly squint anything has a whole other story to it. Minimal is not my thing.” He said though sometimes given the tidying he had to do minimal did seem like a very good idea. Then again if he ever managed to do that with the family home there was something serious wrong, his mother would have a cupboard out faster than he could put it back when she focused on looking for thing. He could leave it pristine in a morning and go home to a mess because an address book had been lost.
Still any house that had character was great, it made things more interesting that way than the plastic homes that seemed to be a favourite of many. “All hail the youtube.” He stated with a grin, youtube had a lot to answer for sometimes, especially his new found love of skateboarding cats. If ever sleep seemed a long way off a quick look in the world of the weird and wonderful and a few cat video’s later he would be out like a light or laughing his head off.
Seeing Kelle yawn made it contagious as he too followed a short while later. “Woah what are you saying that for? You know about the curse, there’s probably some mad situation about to happen now.” He joked though he had no idea what was going on other than he hoped it stayed far away from them because he was enjoying his coffee and chocolate far too much to have a call out ruin it all.
“Right now it can flash all it wants.” He said as he glanced at his watch, it was like waiting for the school bell at five minutes to the end of the day. It felt like the longest home stretch in history. Not that he minded the company or what they were doing it had just been one of those shifts. “Good one, no you wouldn’t... so I’d still need to eat. Maybe I need to get the beer hat just for chocolate?” He said smirking, maybe he would try it one day though then chocolate through a straw, well it hardly had the same appeal.

"Beer hat, hmmm?" A grin crossed her features as she mulled that over, then she laughed. "But you know, chocolate would be too thick, right? I mean, your cheeks would all suck in and your eyes would cross." She demonstrated, then laughed. "Oh, I know! You just have to thin the chocolate...like, with rum or something, right?" Then she raised an eyebrow. "Maybe we're on to something here? We can patent it and retire!" She laughed again, then shook her head. "But I don't know, I guess I'd miss all this fun stuff, the barf and poop and blood...loogies not so much! 'Course, we could drop to part-time, pick up shifts here and there...no worries about politics or...well, hell." Sighing, she leaned back, taking a drink before continuing. "No one else will work with you, and our chances of getting the same rig part time would be nil...dang it! You ruined my plans to become a millionaire!" Steven Hudson

Steven laughed as he nodded to her, on second thoughts a beer hat would be too much effort to try and get the chocolate. Better just to have a stash that he could get his hands on, swap out then packs of gauze for ten chocolate bars and just hope for the best possible outcome. Seeing her demonstrate all he could do was to laugh.
“Now you’re right, chocolate and rum, it would save a lot of time on the journey back to the station to get our gear and head right back out again.” Patent and retire was sounding like a very good option to him, he had never been one for the long haul with planning but lately he felt like at seventy he would still be running around the city trying to save people from paper cuts.
“Ah the fun stuff, I mean who in their right mind would give any of this up? Sleep deprivation, late night meals, all those fluids that sometimes we don’t even know what they are.” He said with a grin knowing it was a conversation that was best left until after eating but then again strong stomachs came with the job. The no politics part did sound very appealing to him, no boss to say what the right call was ten days after the fact and no more paperwork.
“Wow Kelle, it’s the first time a woman’s ever said that to me.” He said pretending to wipe away a fake tear from his eye. “Ruined plans, sure I get that but a millionaire well who knew you had those plans.” He teased grinned as he took a drink. “I mean sure the rig is nice but you’d miss me, I know you would.” He stated though she was right about being the only one who would work with him. It was the best part about the rig as well, he actually had a partner to stick with him.
