Eyal had finally found that right person and he was hardly talking about Jess. No instead today was about the woman he loved meeting the man that would make sure she was safe when he was unavailable to do so. Normally Eyal might have trusted Jess to someone he knew but the tough part of that was his allegiance to Cooper and the mafia coupled with the fact he was dead to the world he knew. Cooper would no doubt have issue with Jess and the fact that she was out of the criminal loop and risking prison for contacting a ‘friend’. No it was much safer to stay dead and survey what America had to offer.
He had spent a good few weeks trying to work out who was the right pick when he came across the strangest of names. Sure he was named after a comic book turtle though the dates were out by ten years Eyal had done his most through work on Donatello McCarthy. Background check to make sure he was on the up and up, which the guy seemed to be. Spotless military record, seal which always helped and cooked. So Eyal saw good with a blade which just about made this guy the perfect match in his eyes.
So Eyal had arranged the meeting with the man. The hotel was the perfect place, enough exits to escape with Jess if required. Well he was hardly meeting the Easter Bunny for tea as he sat in the far corner of the hotel’s restaurant that was serving lunch. He had yet to run the whole thing past Jess but it was a none negotiable part of their relationship. He had mentioned a body guard of sorts but never put the finer detail on it. Today was that day, Jess could meet her body guard and new driver because public transport was a hazard and the driver could meet the woman who he was tasked with keeping safe.
Eyal had left word at the business for Don to meet him and he had left word with Jess to meet him for lunch too. Simple to get the two of them in one place and he could at least be content with the fact that Jess would have someone watching her back. Eyal could hardly explain why but he had eluded to a threat or two and of course the threat that if anything did happen to Jess, what would happen to Don would be ten times worse. Eyal smiled as the glass of soda water was place in front of him as he waited for the others to join him.

Today was the good impressions day, Don would meet his new job today and find out what was so special about this twenty something woman that had a grown man all twisted about it. For a start he wanted no names, Driver, Don or Mac worked fine for him simply because he was not going to have to sit and drive some spoiled little girl around all day. It wasnt what he was paid to do at all. Then came the fact that he had a download on threats to expect but the fact the man had chosen a hotel restaurant.
Don wondered if the man had similar training to himself, various options to escape, enough hiding places for them but that left hiding places for the undesirables. Food wasnt really in his realm of control but then his job hadn’t exactly started yet. It was a meeting. Just a meeting to figure out if he wanted to tell his boss the job was no good or not. Sure he wanted it and it would be a form of work beyond the restaurant his mother owned but if he had to listen to a brat whine all day about daddy issues.
Which Don figured had to play some part given that the twenty some year old was the wife of this guy, yeah... his eyes didnt exactly see a teenager marrying the kid. Still a job was a job right no matter who the client was today so he put on one of his standard dark grey suits, white shirt, shined black shoes and ties followed by a dark black jacket. His standard driver dress code and headed to this place to meet the possible future of his work. Nightmare or not he wasnt sure but only time could tell that.
Don walked into the hotel and asked by name from the man he knew hired him. Don saw Eyal sat in the corner table, smart move though again he couldnt help but wonder exactly who the guy was. He was pulling all the moves he knew so well but it wasnt like he screamed military of any kind. Better not to ask too many questions he figured as he walked over and smiled slightly. “Pleasure to meet you again Mr. Ranen.” Don said as he held out his hand and waited for an invitation to sit down. “I believe today I’m meeting your wife to see if things are to be settled.” He added wanting to make sure about this meeting.

don't apologize
Jess had come with Eyal but she’d had to excuse herself to the ladies room soon after their arrival. She stared into the mirror and sighed. Eyal had been protective, she understood that but a bodyguard? Jess liked to keep her life private, and it wasn’t like she was a child. Plus hiring someone wasn’t cheap. Jess didn’t want to question her husband on his financial affairs. That was a dangerous endeavor if ever there was one. She took her brush out of her purse and straightened out her strawberry blonde locks. With the men she had in her life, she would be old before her time.
Once she’d gotten the knot out of her hair she freshened up and headed back to the table. Once she arrived she saw that someone was waiting for Eyal to offer him a seat. Jess, however sat down silent. There would be time for apologies for taking so long later. She reached out with her left hand to take a sip of water. Jess was left handed and as such made sure to sit in a position where she wouldn’t be bumping anyone rudely.
Her eyes momentarily lingered on her wedding ring. Right, a reminder that Eyal had her best interest at heart. But they had already argued over this, in fact there had been multiple instances where Jess had been against this whole idea from the beginning. She wasn’t much more for it now than she had been before; but she was simply tired of the arguments. Now was the perfect time to keep her mouth shut and use her manners. Jess quietly listened as she didn’t really know what to say yet. This had been a really awkward time to come back to the table.

[presto]⚕ @username ⚕ The gig paid well enough. She was a hired gun for the evening. Keep an eye out on Eyal’s girl and of course Eyal. He was after all part of the family business. Her gun was in the waist belt of her dress as she kept her eyes out for anything kinky. Assyria didn’t like kinks in anything. There was no better thing to do than to watch out for the family. It happened when you were the matriarch of the family and were expected to do everything. The whole baby thing was still on her mind. For the better of the family. Oh how she hated hearing that.
Glancing around she could offer little in the way of direct contact though she could tell that something was bothering Jessica as she had headed off to the restroom. Assyria simply went in also and washed her hands. Sometime was definitely troubling the girl. Perhaps she would off hand mention it to Eyal later. Then again, she didn’t want Jess to get into any trouble. She just made a note to keep a closer eye on her, in case someone tried to approach her. Though she also left the restroom soon after Jess did to go back to where she had been seated at the bar.

Eyal knew that this meeting had been a while in the making, not just finding that right person which on paper yes Donatello seemed fantastic. It was the actions of the man that would be the test however he knew Jess was hardly fond of the idea. The cost of it all was worth it for Jess’s safety, especially given his work and the person he worked for. It was tough enough not letting Scott drag Jess into the business as it was. Tougher still to be okay with deal after deal he was making for her safety.
Even bringing Syri along for added protection. Eyal had no issue in taking care of Jess or protecting her but at the end of the day his choices when it came to Jess were not that of a sane man. He knew as much where as Syri, he knew she was the best at what she did and he could count on her to protect family. Even when Jess excused herself to the bathroom Eyal thought he would be facing a barrage of questions about his judgement on this idea. No a driver made sense to him, someone that could keep his wife safe.
It was good practice and if Jess had an issue with it she could speak up but Eyal was never backing down on the matter. It was simply a fact of getting the right person for the job, one she could agree on too which was why she was there. Eyal stood shaking Don’s hand as Eyal motion to the chair for the man to sit in. “Thank you for coming today.” Eyal replied as he nodded to meeting his wife to see if thing could be settled. Well that was as much down to Jess as it was to Donatello as he sat himself back down for a moment.
Eyal stood up when Jess arrived waiting for her to sit down before he did as he smiled. Her being quiet was normal of a sense but this quiet; no he knew she was uneasy with the whole idea. Eyal might have looked over to Syri for help with his wife but he knew better than to give away the position of anyone else in that room. He kept his eyes on Don as he spoke. “Well I would like to introduce you to my wife, Jessica.” Eyal said as he smiled and glanced at Jess. “Jess this is Mr. McCarthy who I would like to be your driver.” Eyal explained not really wanting to use to term body guard for fear of another argument or heated exchange over the matter. “I thought you two should meet before we go any further. Do either of you have any questions?” Eyal asked as he looked between Jess and Donatello to see who would speak first.

While Don was asking Eyal about his wife he saw the woman in question approach the table. His eyes were wide open walking into this job, no one asked for protection of another for no reason. He wasnt just hired because someone had an icky feeling. No there was reason and the way the man worked, Don figured he had to have a good one to not do it himself. Don knew when someone knew a job, this man knew a job and yes special forces or agency or whatever lettered part of the government this man came from. It was clear that he knew what he was doing just from the table he had picked for the meeting.
“Not at all, glad to be asked.”Don said politely as he went to take a seat only for who he could only assume was the mans wife that came to sit at the table. Don stood for a moment only taking a seat when Jess did. He noted the woman who walked back to the bar just after Jess, a coincidence maybe but maybe not too. He wasnt in that sort of business as he decided to sit tight and see what the meeting would bring. The man had sense to bring another person into this, either competition for the job or a back up plan in case he what? Went nuts for a no. Well either way it wasnt like he could change things.
Don watched Jess glance at her ring, well it was a new marriage then because he wasnt even sure that Jess was of a legal age to do that or he was just getting too old for his own good. She didnt exactly scream enthusiasm over the fact he was there not that he expected it but maybe there was more of an issue than he thought. Don stood when Eyal spoke to introduce them, he straightened out his jacket as habit had him buttoning it. “Pleasure to meet you Jessica.” Don said as he held out his hand to her. “And please, call me Don or Mac. Mr McCarthy is my father.” Don said used to his last name but never with a Mr in front of it.
“I have a few questions but ladies first.” Don said motioning to Jess just in case she had any for him. Don wanted to ask a few things, mostly to do with the job itself and to figure out the ins and outs of it all. Also to figure out the woman he was supposed to protect too. To see if she was likely to run a mile, if he would be playing catch up or if she was willing to participate in her own protection. The last would make life easier but the other options were the ones he was most used to.

don't apologize
Jess was used to overprotective but at least Eyal didn’t try to infringe on her freedom. Jessica was still allowed to go places and Eyal wasn’t barking down her throat about making a cup of coffee in the mornings, but there was still an adjustment period to things she guessed. Jess remained polite. She was well mannered and this wasn’t an uncomfortable setting for her; just she wasn’t used to how things worked at Eyal’s business meetings yet.
Jessica just extended her hand in greeting to Don in greeting. “It’s a pleasure to meet you as well.” Jessica extended her hand. Even Jess knew about Assyria. Syri had been Jessica’s stand in ‘bodyguard’ for the time but too much longer and she would be unable to fulfill the role for a long while. Plus there was the family business to attend to. Something Jess didn’t really want to ask, all she knew was that to Eyal, Syri was family.
Though Jess could read people and she watched Don watching her with her water glass. “Don. For the record. Please stop profiling me. It makes me very uncomfortable.” Jessica quipped though not rudely but she didn’t want someone who was going to nitpick at her every move. So she was nervous. Jess liked to run when she was nervous (mostly up in trees), but there was nowhere to run to. Instead, she put her left hand under the table on Eyal’s leg. Her discomfort she tried to remain hidden, she didn’t need Eyal getting onto her for causing a scene or something.
“I don’t have questions. I have certain things that get under my skin and you are off to a really slow start.” Jessica decided to show a little of her sarcastic side. “I don’t take well to being smothered or nitpicked over. I can handle myself, if I have to do so. The point of finding someone I trust so that I don’t have to and that my husband can be a little less stressed about my safety. I’m not a child and if you are going to treat me like one then you are not the person for this job.” She decided to keep talking, though she had a feeling Eyal might get onto her if she spoke too much of her mind. “Hiring someone was a mutual decision. Deciding who fits that position will be also. You’d do best to keep that in mind.” She set her napkin in her lap and ordered a mint julep when the waiter came by.
Normally, she preferred to drink her bourbon straight but she knew this was not the occasion but she really needed something to drink. Ordinarily she would settle for water but she was stressed out. This McCarthy person was going to do her head in. Now she played with the necklace she had inherited from her mother just before her mother’s death. Jess’s right hand remained on Eyal’s leg for the time being. She was left handed and as such was sitting where she couldn’t bump elbows with anyone.

Eyal watched Don carefully, he was polite but that meant little when it came to Jess. She was his world and if Don was unable to do his job, bad things might happen and he was not for that. The entire idea was to let Jess have her freedom. To let her do as she pleased but to have a person he trusted there with her just in case. A person he knew could disappear into the background of her life, let her get on with her day but be there when he was unable to be. Smiling when Jess called Don out on profiling her, the man had a reason he knew that as much as Eyal was profiling the man from across the table. It was nice to know that Jess knew it too though making her feel uncomfortable was not a great idea. Feeling her hand on his leg, Eyal took one of his hands from the table moving it under and placing his hand over hers. Eyal had never been one for scenes and he did his best to avoid them so seeing Jess so uncomfortable made him uneasy.
He squeezed her hand lightly surprised that Jess had no questions. Then he realised, the sarcastic side he adored and often had no understanding of appeared. “Also while we are mutually deciding, I want to make something perfectly clear. My wife is off limits, no eyes, no hands and no... what do American’s call it...” He tried to think of the right words without getting to the point and telling the man that Jess was his and that was final. “No funny business?” Eyal added looking to Jess to make sure he had the right words for that.
“Also if you did get the job then what happens to Jess, happens to you Don, ten times worse. Is that clear?” Eyal said as his gaze turned a little more deadly. It was his one rule for this job, Jess was safe and protected. He wanted it to be clear that Don was to do everything within his power to make sure that happened. Eyal could see Jess was playing with her necklace, he took a slow breath and did the one thing that he usually would never dream of. Eyal moved his hand from under the table and placed his arm around Jess’s waist.
He leaned closer to her as he brushed his lips passed her cheek. “It’s okay, just tell me if you want someone else.” Eyal said knowing that this whole subject was a mine field for them both. “Mutual decision.” He whispered not wanting Jess to think she was unable to say no to this guy. No to the idea was none negotiable but no to the man was doable.

Don was still trying to work out if this would be a good job to take on, sure he could walk on it and his boss would ask why but then again. His boss wasnt putting his butt on the line for another person. The person at the bar Don knew about, she was good at her job but then as the saying went. It took one to know one and despite the fact she was at the bar and not the table, he could only imagine how deadly she was. He laughed when Jess called him out on profiling her, it was all part of his job.
A job he took seriously and one where he had to know what the person he was protecting was like to do his job effectively. “All due respect Mrs. Ranen. I need to know who I might be protecting, how you think and what you are likely to do.” Don said trying to explain why, “I’m not a baby sitter and to do my job with efficiency I need to know that we are both on the same page. That if anything did happen, I go left you go left. None of this right and left, we need to be same page and understand each other.”
So trying to explain might not be the best thing to do as he just nodded. “But if you wish I’ll stop but then you might want to call off your other guard. You’ve nothing to fear from me, it’s a job interview not life threatening yet.” He offered as he heard Eyal speak of Jess being off limits. “Full disclosure here and all respect to you Mrs. Ranen but you’re not my type and even if you were. Marriage vows do mean something to some people still. Eyes and hands are only for my job, nothing else so neither of you need to worry about that.” Don said trying not to wonder if Jess’s husband was insane or just jealous or realised he had an amazing woman on his arm.
“I get it but you’ll see from my record. I’ve never had anyone die on me and I’m good at what I do.” Don said staring at Eyal, oh he knew the man was on another planet but maybe he just really loved his wife and it wasnt too crazy. Yeah the man was nuts. Don turned his attention back to Jess who’s sarcasm was remarkably refreshing. “You’re not a child no but you’re also not in the protection business either so while I understand you can handle yourself. I can handle things too but the point of hiring me is so you will never know I am there until you need me to be.” Don stated.
“I do not smother people, nitpick, have opinions other than hold a door or your bag if required. As I’ve said, I only get involved if I am needed or I see a threat. Then we do things my way so I can guarantee your safety, if you choose to stray from my way then things can get... messy. Which is why we need to get to know each other to know how you would react and what I can do to make this work.” Don said wondering if this was such a great idea or not. It was a full time job, the money was good and sure it gave him something to do but sarcastic sue was going either make his life hell or make it interesting. He still wasnt sure which option it was.
“I if mutually agreed and to be kept in mind if I did fit the position, I would be hired as a driver and body guard but mainly you pay me to stay out of the way unless there is a problem. Then I fix the problem and we go back to you not even knowing I was there. That is the job as I understand it.” Don said having done this sort of thing before but never permanently, no his usual jobs were a couple of weeks or a month at most while people came in and out of the city.

don't apologize Jessica didn’t usually like to make a scene either but she wasn’t just going to let someone walk all over her. She lived up to her spitfire redhead stereotype to an extent at times and wasn’t afraid of shooting her mouth off. “Then you insult me by not trusting me to give you answers to the questions you want. You have a mouth. Perhaps you should use it instead of making me feel belittled.” She hated being profiled, it really bothered her and she was trying to keep things calmed down but the only thing keeping her from making a huge mess of things was Eyal’s hand over hers.
Then Don called her out on having Syri close by. “She already works for me Mr. McCarthy. You don’t.” There was no need to tell him that Syri was simply a friend of her husband’s. Hell Jess didn’t know anymore than that and for all she knew Syri was probably getting paid to be here. “She stays. If you want me to believe there aren’t other probable threats in this room then again you insult my intelligence.” Jessica added. Oh she could be a spitfire when she wanted to be and Don had clearly tapped into her sarcasm. Though sarcasm was her go to when things were making her feel uncomfortable.
Then there was Eyal going off about her being off limits. All Jessica could do was laugh a little. Then Hebrew came as she looked to Eyal, “You know me better than that.” She whispered as she ran her hand over the one he still had in her lap. Though she added onto the end a moment. “But yes those are the words you meant.” She decided that Hebrew was best for when she didn’t really want Don understanding her conversation with Eyal.
Jessica laughed when Don accused her of not being in the protection business. “All due respect Mr. McCarthy. I served my country. I was in the protection business before I even finished high school.” She narrowed her eyes. “Please keep insulting me. See where that lands you.” Cue the whole spiel on Don understanding his job, Jess remained silent. Understanding the job and actually performing the job were too totally different things. Her father had taught her how to protect herself well and she’d been a Commander’s bodyguard for a time while she was in the military. There was a lot about her this Don person was getting wrong. “You really should stop jumping to conclusions. My job in the Navy was to protect the commander of my ship. Do not underestimate me or insult me more by telling me that I wasn’t in the protection business, because I damn well was.” Well that had been before she had to change jobs for medical reasons.
Jess just let Eyal hold her around the waist. She wasn’t going to further any displays of affection but she wasn’t going to turn them away either. Jessica knew the boundaries but she also knew it was to comfort her and it eased her a little bit hearing his voice. “Can I think on it?” She whispered back in Hebrew. “I am open to discussing it. I don’t feel like I am ready to make a decision right this minute.” Jessica looked her husband in the eye a little to try and get him to look her in the eyes as she spoke. “I’m more interested in finding someone who is willing to get to know me without drawing presumptions. Someone I can have a conversation and not feel like I want to kick them out of the room. We are hiring someone I have to coexist comfortably with.” Jessica continued in Hebrew.

Eyal glared at Don when he pointed out Syri, no she was there to make her presence known and do a job. He would have been disappointed if the man was oblivious to that. “Nice to know you have situational awareness and might I make a small suggestion Don.” Eyal said though it was hardly a question. “Try not to upset my wife because I’m sure she can do a lot more damage than I could even dream to.” Eyal was unlikely to test that theory but then he had no doubt in Jess’s ability to look after herself.
“There’s no doubt about that Don but good is not what I’m looking for. Good means there is a chance Jess can get hurt. I need great for her so I think you need to do a little better right now.” Eyal added deciding that he wanted to hurt the guy for simply annoying Jess as he was. Then again judging by what he knew of Jess already she was hardly going to stop and leave what he said lie. No there was bound to be words spoken between the two.
Eyal smiled hearing her speak Hebrew, there was something about the language that reminded him of home and for him. Jess was home. “I know you and I trust you but him, not so much.” Eyal replied in Hebrew, Vegas had been enough of a learning curve for him. His wife was amazing and yes he was hardly blind to the fact that she could turn heads in a room. As amazing as that was he also knew that people who looked also could go a little further than that. “Thank you, funny business is a strange saying.” He mused though his attention was then turned by Don speaking about his business.
Of course it would go down like a lead balloon with his wife who had done the same thing for a Navy Officer. Then again she put it a lot better than he would have done as he surveyed the cutlery on the table wondering if a knife to the hand would make the man stop talking. Funny how a dinner table could become a weapon of choice, forks, knives and even a spoon could be deadly enough with the right force applied to it. It would show the measure of the man if he stayed after that Eyal thought, after all not many people would take a telling like that.
Still he was hardly against Jess speaking out for herself, sure it mad the search for a bodyguard for her a little more difficult but then it was no trouble at all for her safety. Syri would hardly be able to go on doing her job much longer and putting her or anyone else in danger was not his idea of a good one. “Of course you can, think on it all you would like to.” Eyal replied not wanting to rush her into it. He hated when they argued and really causing another argument over the same ground, he was willing to avoid that for the sake of some thinking time.
Eyal gazed into her eyes as she spoke. There was no use in pushing the subject though when she made the point that he had entirely forgotten about. She did have to exist with them, it was hardly the job Scott would give him to go and look after one of their own. Or Mossad where he would be on a protection detail, he knew the job would end but this one was open ended. “We will find you that person Nisicha Riva just give this guy a chance. He seems abrasive but he might grow on you like fungus?” Eyal replied in Hebrew though he was unsure if fungus was the right word but he was sure it made his point.
Sure Don was hardly making it easy but maybe the man could yet redeem himself, after all he was hardly hiring a teddy bear for her. No the man had a resume and sure he knew that maybe playing nice was a little out of his wheelhouse but he had faith that he could be a little more of a people person.

Don just smiled at Jess when she used the words trust and belittled. “Pardon me but it’s wasnt my intention to do that. I’m just used to people lying to me first. I can ask all the right questions but it doesn’t mean you’ll tell the truth about it. It’s simple human behaviour so I’m sorry for making you feel that way. I just like to know what I know first.” Don explained, seeing how people worked made his job easier and trying to work out the person he might protect now. Made things a lot easier in the future of course if she didnt think he was belittling her anymore.
Don listened to Eyal speak as he nodded wanting to hear the man’s suggestion. “Oh I’m sure she can and her words hurt enough but my suggestion is that you know who you are looking for before you ask a person to meet you. It saves time all around, if you want someone to be your friend then you’re looking in the wrong place. If you’re looking for someone to do the job, then you’ve got the right guy.” Don said trying not to roll his eyes, sure the rent-a-cop service was three blocks over and he would be happy to dish out that number.
“Ever heard of blowing your own trumpet? It’s not my thing either but yeah I am great at my job, people tend to live if I’m on their side but again. I can afford to walk away from this job, if you need my skills can you afford for that to happen?” Don said deciding that sure he could take his bosses disapproving looks for a few days but then there would be another job. There always was though how long it took was anyone’s guess.
Don’s attention turned to Jess as he just kept his smile. “Oh I know she’s not the only threat in the room, tall guy, newspaper, sunglasses inside has been keeping an eye on your friend there for a while now. Maybe just a shy flirt but maybe not too.” Don said focusing on Jess as he spoke, “Then you’ve got Mr. Holiday Maker to the four tables behind us, a little too fidgety so that either tells me he’s not a holiday maker or he’s here with someone who isn’t his wife or we can choose the sharp faced woman by the pot plant at the door. Hovering there too long for their own good but the notebook on the inside pocket screams cop or reporter. Take your pick.” Don stated deciding that listing everyone there would be a waste of time.
Jess was a spitfire, she hadn’t a problem with telling him what she thought which was great because at least angry people were honest. It was tough to lie and be angry at the same time. When the Hebrew started Don had no clue what was being said, he almost wanted to tap the table and ask for the English translation but watching Eyal and his hand and Jess’s lack of reaction. He had to wonder on the relationship, one made an effort the other stayed still and they were still speaking in tongues that he didnt understand. Maybe it was better he didnt know.
Don wondered if Jess was even old enough to have served as he considered her age or maybe just the guy she was with made her seem younger. “So now we’re getting somewhere.” Don said at the mention of the Navy, at last some common ground for the two of them. “I jump but I haven’t concluded anything other than you picked the right service to be in. If you said Army then this meeting would be over. Assuming you’ve seen my file then you’ll know I am Navy or was navy. Still working that part out but since you’ve been in the same business you know who it works.” Don added deciding that of all people she should understand why he said what he said.
“You know this is how working with each other starts, you tell me something I tell you something. We get to know each other. Now I know you worked a protection detail, I don’t need to tell you much more. You know how all this works as well as I do and the importance of getting along and understand each other. Then again if you could stop assuming I’m insulting you when I know nothing about your history, that would put us on a fair standing.” Don explained as he decided to try and make it a little more friendly. “What ship did you work from?” He asked her trying to build a bridge of any kind, Navy history well he had to go on something.

don't apologize
Jess wasn’t so sure how accurate the statement was about her being more deadly than her husband, but it amused her nevertheless. She’d let Eyal handle things. In fact, she’d probably already said too much. She was only moments from getting up and leaving the table but that was rude. Not something she’d do to embarrass Eyal after all he’d done to arrange this meeting. It had taken some doing given her busy schedule.
“So you are asking me to trust someone that neither of us trusts?” Jessica looked at her husband completely confused. The funny business comment was amusing and it elicited a smile from Jessica though she didn’t respond more than the acknowledgement. To be fair, she didn’t know what to say and they still had company. Then Eyal agreed to letting her think on it some. She was about to thank him when the fungus comment came shooting out of his mouth. Jess was too tired to correct it and she just nodded though her face fell again. She didn’t want to get used to this ‘fungus’ as her husband called him.
“I’m not looking for someone to be my best friend Ahavat, but I don’t want to hire someone I can’t stand the sight of.” Yeah Don was headed for that direction, resume or no resume. She’d thought the whole mess was over when Don opened his mouth again. Oh for the love of… what the hell was it now?
Oh so now he lumped her in with everyone else. Jess was beginning to hate this man more by the second. Getting along with someone and befriending them weren’t the same thing. “I have to trust someone to know they’d put their life on the line. I’m not getting that vibe. If I can’t trust you, there is the door.” Jess pointed it out behind her. She always sat facing the door since the attack on the diner some year or so ago. “I’m friends with half a dozen people with your training Mr. McCarthy. You skills aren’t so unique.” She picked up her wine glass.
He started talking threats and she scoffed. “That woman isn’t a threat to you, unless harm comes to me. But seeing as you see her as a threat I bid you adieu.” She got up from the table tapping on it next to Eyal. “Excuse me while I go take a walk.” Jessica nodded to Assyria who got up from where she was. The Navy talk was falling on deaf ears. The only question she caught was what ship she’d worked off of. “USS Vicksburg” If he knew anything at all, he would know that the ship had been torpedoed while harbored. Jess remembered the hell she’d taken from the Admiral for saving his life and injuring herself. Because she was a female.
Jess stepped onto the patio. Russian lyrics flooded from the railing beside her. “Mrs. Ranen, you are unsettled. Is there anything I can do to help?” Jessica looked over her shoulder to the woman standing beside her. They’d not exactly ever been close but Eyal was family to Assyria, so Jess knew why she was asking. Sincerity probably might be a little lacking; but hell at the least the woman was trying.
“Help Eyal find someone I can trust?” Jessica sighed. “I’m beginning to think that this Don character sees himself more as a hitman than a bodyguard.” No, she knew what Eyal was really after no matter what he’d called it in reality.
Syri chuckled. “He does come off that way. But if he’s a hitman; rest assured Eyal wouldn’t let him near you.” Well given what Syri did, that probably wasn’t the case but she was trusted family not some stranger floating his colors.

Eyal rolled his eyes, this man was testing his own patience on the matter and yes he already knew who he was looking for. He was looking for a bodyguard, a man that would step in front of a speeding train if he had to, to protect his wife as much as he would. Just without the marriage side of things or thinking that Jess was anything more than a client. The one problem with a person on paper was that it never showed their attitude and of course between Don and Jess things were hardly going as he thought they might.
“Yes we can afford to walk away from this and you. As you can already see there is someone in place to do the job however there are many more where you came from.” Eyal said glaring at the man for a moment, oh how he wanted to adopt a mossad officer for this job though he knew making that call was more dangerous than telling Cooper no. Eyal could only look at Jess the minute he heard her Hebrew about trust. When she had a point he was struggling to reply to that even in another language.
“Yes I believe I am but for your own good. He is annoying but I cannot dismiss someone because I find them annoying.” Eyal replied in Hebrew. If it was the case then he never would have joined the mafia or put up with his boss. They were necessities of life as annoying as they were. “ I understand and we can think on this together I promise you Ahavah but I want you to be safe. Even if you cannot stand them, if they keep you safe then at least I know you’re alright.” Eyal knew explaining the why’s was a bad idea.
Then again it might make it easier if she knew the sort of people he was trying to protect her from. Eyal was struggling to try and keep and kind of peace between the two, when they had argued over the choice from the start he thought that this might get easier. Seeing the people and letting her in on the choice but now, now he wondered if he should have just shoved someone into the position. Then again he had kidnapped her from her brother when they got married so that was easily done when she was annoyed. The one person Eyal never wanted her to be annoyed at was him.
Taking a walk, Eyal sat there for a moment trying to debate what was best to do as he watched Assyria and Jess leave. If he made the choice it was likely the end of his marriage, if he left it open then would the choice ever be made though at least he had a marriage at the end of it. Choices choices and being a guy he had no clue what was the correct one to make as he glanced at Don and smiled. “Excuse me for a moment; I think we might just need a minute or two.” He said trying to politely excuse himself from the table.
His mind was filled with the downfalls of this entire thing, they had argued over it and now he had no idea what was going on in her mind. Eyal’s mind was elsewhere or he might have seen the man that chose to follow him as he left the table and headed out toward Jess and Syri. He was paying little attention to his surrounding as his only concern was Jess right at that moment. Eyal made his way toward his wife as he smiled. “Is everything okay?” He asked in English oblivious to what was going on behind him, no his concern right now was Jess and only her.

Talk about cutting comments, this was going nowhere fast he thought. It wasnt that they didnt seem like nice people, no far from it but maybe they were too set on an idea? Or maybe they weren’t set on the idea at all. He figured that was more to the point given the Hebrew conversation that he hadn’t a clue about. Still he felt like saying it was rude at the dinner table but then again, he had worse ideas but keeping his mouth shut about it was a good thing he figured.
Still on the basis of who was more annoying, you had the husband. Obviously an operator of some kind, Don didnt want to know much about what he did but then there was the wife. Navy yes but had her own opinions and said them, feisty yes but then Don hadn’t exactly been on the same page as a woman for years. It was the main reason he was single, either they wanted more and he couldnt give it for work commitments. Or he did and ended up messing it up somewhere along the way so his track record of communicating with women. Yeah he wasnt too hopeful.
“But I’m saying you can, I just want to know how you think but I’m getting it slowly.” Don said trying to smile as he shrugged his shoulders when she started in on his skills. “No not unique, very few of us doing this with my skill yes but then there’s only one me. So in that sense yeah I’m pretty unique.” Don added wondering if she was about to stab him with the wine glass or not. “But then again, there’s always another person wanting a driver.” Don added though by the job description it was more body guard than driver but the title he had been ordered to stick with.
“Addio.” Don said in Italian as he watched Jess leave before hearing about the USS Vicksburg. “Hey... I’m glad you made it off that ship. Had friends on there.” Don added, remembering what she had said about protection detail and the commanding officer. “Are you the ‘Gibbs’?” Don asked though he was unsure if she heard him or not but if she was the Gibbs that protected the Admiral she had his complete respect for that. After all not many people would do that on their best day or worst for that matter. It wasnt that he was trying to make friends but then the military had a way that even if you werent directly related, you were still family by the winder notion.
Don sat there debating if now he knew what he knew, well it would be an honour to watch out for a kid that had protected an Admiral. If of course they got past this whatever it was that was happening. Don nodded at Eyal, “Take all the time you need, you have a hell of a woman there.” Don stated as he watched Eyal follow where his wife had gone. Don might have looked back to the table if it wasnt for the guy that started to follow Eyal.
Getting up from the table Don joined the man following Eyal. He saw the glint of a knife, small enough to barely be noticed until Eyal was out on the patio. Without much of a thought Don didnt want to hang around to see if the man would make a move other than holding a knife and looking at the wrong person in the room. With his foot stuck out slightly and a gentle nudge Don sent the man flying head first into a set of iron cast railings with a thud.
“Ouch that has to hurt.” Don announced, hearing the clatter of the knife shoot out of his hand clean across the floor where it would be no danger to anyone. “Need to watch where you put your feet.” Don added smiling as he moved over to the group. “Think maybe we need to make an exit right about now?” Don asked them wondering what he had gotten himself into or rather what had this husband and wife gotten themselves into.
