Felicity raised her brow at the sudden anger in his tone, why should she have been surprised by that when most men held the same tone with her. Anger, annoyance she had decided to say or do something other than what she was paid or told to do. How he said anything and what he said was absolute lies, she knew as much a man never had the reputation Bracken did without doing something to deserve it and she was trying to help. In her own misguided strange way. The way the cops that visited her talked about it, criminals were easy to find.
Evidence fell into their laps and now she was seeing they talked complete rubbish. A hair or fingerprint, if he had told her to look for that she might have found a footprint from a Yeti but anything less than that was a flying pig sort of situation. “Fine but why didn’t you just tell me what when you said ‘stay in the car’ you could have said ‘stay in the car because I want to get a microscope out and play Sherlock’.” Felicity snapped back, in her mind Bracken did it, she knew it and she tried to tell someone and they were now interested in paint on the wall? Seriously?
The amusement was the last straw, nothing about this was funny and really she would have done whatever she could for him, until now. At that moments he had no issue in feeding Loki to the wolves and not thinking for a second about it. “I might have a weapon and for your own peace of mind, I know very well how to fire one thank you.” She stated in a slightly snarky tone, okay a very snarky tone. Felicity wanted to make a point but the way he was going on, the rhetorical questions there was no point in even adding her points in. There was no reasoning with logic.
She knew her logic was flawed but that was the beauty of her life, nothing made sense to people and it only had to make sense to her in some way. Felicity felt the car pull over as she braced herself for the hand or the screaming or the ‘get out’ right there and then. Loki had every right in her mind to though she had only tried to help in the way she knew she could. Felicity hesitantly glanced toward him, hearing the calm professional tone once again.
Nodding to him as he assured her she felt like he was telling her the truth, he did want to find her friend and above all she really did need to be straight with him. “I want to believe you, I really do but don’t go all angry with me for trying to help you. I know okay yes it wasn’t the best idea but I’m not a cop and I don’t look for paint scratches.” She explained as she smiled wanting more than anything to believe him.
“Okay but you know the offers are there if you... want.” She said smiling as she nodded, “But fine, I’ll be straight with you but don’t ever say you didn’t want to hear something I tell you okay.” She added, “So yes I have a gun, its a 22 and it’s kept at my place for... issues. No I have no permit and yes I would have gladly shot an official to help you out.” She said smiling “Is that honest enough?” She questioned.
It was in her nature to be angry and defensive for just about anything, she was used to that way of working and cops rarely wanted to help her. If anything more like arrest her for being her but still. Loki seemed different to the others as she bit her lip nervously for a moment. “Did you really think for a second I’d stay in the car? I mean even a little?” She asked him, curious as to why he might have even trusted her to do that. Felicity felt bad that she had broken a trust if he did think she would stay there though if he did, she had to wonder which one of them was on the different side of crazy.

Loki remained characteristically silent and listened as Felicity went on a tangent about microscopes and playing Sherlock. He wasn't there to argue with her and he had no desire to, he wasn't going to escalate the situation unnecessarily. Countering the point would only provoke a full on argument with raised voices and high tensions and that would only make Felicity even more upset and emotional and he didn't want that. He was there to to do his job, he was there to help her and he didn't want to make her feel any worse than she already did. Even if it didn't come across that way. He let her go on with her snarky reply about her having a gun or not and if she could use it. But it didn't come as a surprise when she assured him she knew how to fire it. Though he showed no outward reaction, only hard blinking a couple of times as he listened to her go on. Then the smallest of smiles turned the corners of his lips when she admitted that she wanted to believe him. That was good and it told him a lot. It meant that she didn't trust him completely, understandable given her experience, but she was trying to. And admitting that if she meant to or not told him she was being honest. He nodded promisingly when she agreed to be straight with him on the condition he couldn't say he didn't want to hear something. "Alright." Was the one word he uttered, letting her go on. Again his face remained unreadable as she confessed to owning a 22. without a permit and truthfully admitted she would have shot an official to help him. His eyes double blinked once more and he nodded lightly but pensively to himself before turning back and taking the wheel again. Did you really think for a second I’d stay in the car? I mean even a little? And with that Loki pulled the car away. His lack of reply saying more that his words could of, to anyone who knew how to hear it anyway. Truth was Loki hadn't been sure if she would stay in the car or not...he had just hoped that she was going to. He had a past of his own and had made some bad choices, he had walked a dark road for a while there and knew what it felt like to be in it alone. And the truth of it was as different as the two seemed to be from each other they was so much the same and he had hoped that she would see they was cut from the same cloth. That she would see he was genuine when he said he'd find her friend, that life hadn't left her totally demoralized and that there was a part of her left that would be able to trust him when he told her to stay in the car. But that was a conversation they wouldn't be having. "I know you are not a cop, I'm the cop." He pointed out as they drove. Not that she needed to be told that. "That's why I told you to stay in the car." He added a little tongue in cheek. Making a point. "I hear what you're saying." He said, returning to his normal phrases and rhythm of doing things on the job, "I don't have time to tell you everything I'm doing or explain why I need you to do something." He began, trying to help her understand. "If I do something it's always for a reason. Always." He assured her. "Now I know you don't know it, but I actually got a lot from Bracken back there. And as much as you want me to I just can't walk in there and arrest him." The detective looked over at his ride-along for a moment, "If I do that he's not going to talk. I need proof, I need evidence. Something that will lead me to Ashley and make sure Bracken doesn't walk." Loki took a left and the pair was only a couple of blocks from the hotel. "So we're going to go to the hotel and I'm going to try and get some answers." Loki parked up and looked over at her, "So let me do the talking."He was serious as always, but realistically the chances of her keeping her mouth shut was probably as likely as her staying in the car had been. The detective looked up at the building, not stopping as he walked towards it. Once inside he headed straight to the receptionist without missing a stride. "I'm Detective Loki." He confirmed with his badge. "I want cctv footage from the last week and I'm gonna need records too. I need to speak to whoever is in charge."

The lack of reaction surprised her; she had just admitted to a cop that she knew how to shoot a gun which was a practical admission of guilt on her part. She had a gun; it was handy to keep a few unfriendly customers at bay. Felicity tried to watch Loki’s face; to see if for one second there was to be any understand but his blinking seemed to tell the story. He really had thought she might stay in the car and she felt bad for not doing that. It had been a long time since anyone had trusted her to do anything.
Loki appeared to be the first police officer in Chicago that seemed genuine, it would have been easier if he had yelled and told her to get lost because that was the exact response she was used to. The jail cell, the looking into her past and hope that she could manage to bargain her way out to the daylight again. This time though he seemed to take her seriously which was more than she could say for a lot of people. It almost made her rethink going against his request to stay in the car but if they could at the very least have an understanding that truth was key and she would tell him what she was going to do.
Felicity bit her lip as she tried to hide a grin, oh there was no way anyone would confuse her for a cop though given her record she doubted she would be allowed into any academy to be one. “Right well, you know as the none cop of this little band of merry men, I decided to exercise my civilian rights to roam around.” She added as he glanced his way wondering how he would take that. It had been a stupid choice, she could see that now and who stashed anyone in the garden shed? The unprepared criminal sure but not a politician.
“I can see that, you don’t really strike me as the spontaneous type.” She said, if anything he seemed like the on the edge of a breakdown, buttoned down sort but then she could always be wrong. “Fine, I’ll respect what you say and do what you say... for the most part.” If he needed another ‘wait in the car’ moment she could at least give him fifteen minutes but if something felt off to her, she would follow him just to make sure someone was watching his back.
Felicity wanted to argue her millions reasons for arresting Bracken right there and then, in her mind they were completely valid and had merit but then cops and rules. Had she not been about to make another plea to Loki’s none cop side she might have noticed the route they were taking. “The hotel.” She said as she raised her brow not sure she wanted to be seen with a cop in a place like that. “Okay, I’ll keep my mouth shut.” Felicity said with a smile, oh not a chance but still it was nice he told her to at least.
Felicity followed Loki into the hotel, any other day she would have linked her arm with his, gotten a room key and well, he could imagine the rest though this time she walked a little off to his side. Her mouth trying to do its best not to say a word as she watched Loki confirm with the receptionist who he was. It was ironic seeing the way the woman squirmed as she wondered just who had a room that day.
She watched the woman scurry off through a door, no doubt to find a person in charge as she nudged Loki. “So how did I do with the keeping quiet?” She almost whispered, keeping her voice low as she smiled. She felt that now she had done her five seconds of silence it was a good enough time to speak as she saw the door open and an official skinny, rather uptight and harassed manage approach Loki. Felicity looked him up and down as she smiled, opening her mouth before shutting it again as she waited for Loki to ask.
The manager held a cd disk in his hand as he glanced at them both. “I will need to see ID to confirm.” He stated in a rather harassed and nippy tone. “We don’t just give out CCTV footage; do you have any idea who our clientele are here? You don’t just ask to spy on our guests. Honestly what has the CPD stooped to these days?”

A lot of cops would understandably consider how questionable being seen stepping into a hotel with a known escort could be, and they might have though twice about letting her out of the car. Then there was Loki who just walked into the hotel and strutted through the lobby unphased by having Felicity at his side. He had a responsibility, a duty to do his job and to leave no stone unturned no matter where the case took him or who it took him there with. And he had a badge that gave him authority and access to information he needed to do that job. An authority he handled confidently and unapologetically, though on occasion it could come across as an air of arrogance to those who didn't know better. Loki watched as the receptionist went to fetch the person in charge before turning to Felicity when she nudged him. "You did good keeping quiet." He answered with a slightly encouraging tone. "Now just keep it up." He quickly added, giving her a look to go with it. Though if his partner Maddy had been there she might have smirked to herself believing that Loki's deadpan humor was peeking through some of the seriousness of that remark to tease her feisty, playful and strong headed nature. Then came the skinny and unhappy looking manager. Something about him screamed stuck up from a mile away, but then maybe he was just having a bad day. Either way Loki could hold his own. The detective simply held up his ID at the manager's eye level before flipping it shut and slipping it back in it's place in a matter of fact manner. That Chicago PD pass that gave him the unapologetic authority to do what he was doing. "I'm glad to hear your establishment follows the law here." He replied impassively to the man's uppity CCTV comment. Loki placed his hands casually on his hips as he let out a small sighed and shook his head lightly, as if to say to Mr skinny Jim 'I know righ, can you believe it?' when the guy made the snooty CDP statement. "Conducting missing persons investigations." He answered in his usual non-emotive style. Being passive aggressive through his impassiveness. Yes, looking for missing people, what have the CPD stooped to! "And speaking of your clientele, I'm going to need a list of the guests you've had stay here along with their check in and check out dates."Yes Loki had a good idea who their clientele was, but he wanted more than a good idea, he wanted the facts. Besides he knew their new friend would probably be happy to oblige. "This hotel was her last known location before her disappearance. I need records of every stay she's has had in the past 12 months. And anyone she has stayed with" He said showing the manager a picture of Ashley. Yes by asking for Ashley's check in dates Loki could track who she was there with and when, even if they used fake names. He could look for patterns, build a full picture and hopefully prove if a specific politician had in fact been there or not, and all without mentioning names and pointing fingers just by asking for Ashley's records. Felicity could hardly deny it was nice to walk into a hotel with a man that had no care what she did or who she was. Usually it was a case of hiding around a corner, heading straight for a lift or just hanging around a corridor until the gentleman in question decided that the coast was clear and he could be seen with her. Not always the case but with Loki, it was nice just to walk in there and have no expectation of an afternoons work that she knew so well.
Instead she admired the way he seemed to flash his badge and doors opened; maybe she could get one of those and use it when needed. “You’re really no fun.” Felicity said with a sigh hearing Loki tell her to keep it up, obviously he expected more than a few minutes silence from her as she folded her arms over her chest. “I’ll try another three minutes and see how that goes.” She offered with a smirk, though she soon lost it when she saw the manager coming back. No say nothing and let Loki handle it she told herself.
The manager glanced at the badge as he raised his brow, honestly who did the CPD think they were these days? Considering he had a few of the higher-ups on speed dial he might be able to find out as he saw the authority and unapologetic look. “Good because the CPD are some of my best customers.” He added, a veiled thread without much of the veil if he was honest. “And what you think they are missing here?” The manager asked with a callous laugh, “I am sure housekeep would have found them by now. Our guests do not disappear detective.”
Felicity could feel her hands balling into fists as she bit her lip hard to try and stop herself from saying a few things. Felicity was about to go and slap the man when she heard Loki ask for the last twelve months of details for Ashleigh. Oh now that was going to be a long list she thought with a smirk.
The manager seemed to be less than happy as he shook his head. “No, I cannot give that information out to you detective. Our clients use us because we are discreet and this missing woman, if she chose to engage in a course of action risky to her own health, that has little to do with this hotel.” He snapped, “If you have no warrant then you have no requirement to get the information.” Felicity glared at the manager as she turned to Loki, oh her time for saying nothing was abruptly coming to an end as she pointed to her watch.
“One and a half minutes I owe you.” She said before glaring at the manager. “So you do cater to those horrid over paid sleazy men that pay for their bed mates?” Felicity said as loudly as she could, yes she was one of those mates but right now the more damage she wanted to do, she felt like throwing a plant pot through a window. “The detective is trying to be discreet here too but if you want the world to know.” She said flapping her arms as she smiled at some of the guests, “I guess you want to know my hourly rate too?” She added as she watched the manager squirm before she glanced at Loki again smiling.

Loki remained nonreactive when Felicity told him he was no fun, honestly he didn't care. But he shot her a look when she said she'd remain silent for another three minutes, before he turned his attention to the manager. Even with the man's talent for giving off an air of arrogance that would make the most passive person want to plant a slap across his face, Loki remained collected. The detective somehow kept an impressive pokerface even with the man's scarcely veiled threats. He held his tongue as Mr skinny Jim went on. Honestly why did everyone he talked to today think that he thought that Ashley was still on the premises? With all the police procedural dramas on tv nowadays he'd think that people would know how an investigation worked to some degree. Loki could feel a few of his brain cells dieing. Seriously did this guy really think the detective was suggesting Ashley was still in the hotel waiting to jump out and say 'ta-da! fooled you!' No, he was tracing Ashley's steps and the hotel was the last place she had been seen. Was that really so difficult to comprehend? But before Loki had a chance to interject and clarify that point the man steamed ahead, going on about warrants, being discreet and Ashley's risky actions being her own fault. A line of statements that made the detective tense with anger on the inside. However Felicity paused his reply as she stated she owed him a minute and a half. At first Loki felt his heart sink a little as he knew she was about to open her mouth, expecting her so scream and curse and threaten the guy. But when she started making a scene, talking loudly and drawing unwanted attention that maked Skinny Jim squirm a smirk flashed across his face so briefly that only Felicity would have seen it at a glanced. Oh Felicity was a feisty one alright and it was clear to see exactly what she was doing. And when he wasn't the one on the reviving end of it this time around it was actually satisfying to watch. The detective relished seeing the man fluster and squirm, keeping his pokerface before finally interjecting in his collect and professional tone, "Look, I understand your concern for privacy. Thant's why I came here to ask you for the records so I could peruse this investigation discreetly." He started. "But I understand if you would feel better telling your clientele that you had to hand over the information. If you prefer I can peruse all the official channels. Get a warrant, get a unit down here, have uniformed officers come in and collect everything." He continued. Playing the part of innocent, helpful detective while showing how veiled threats are really made. "This was the last place Ashley was seen before her disappearance, with the main suspect of our investigation. So I can call a judge right now and get a warrant inside 15 minutes, it's no problem." He offered with a light shrug and dull professional smile, helping felicity turn the screws in a way the guy couldn't call him out on. Tag: Felicity Jones . Continued here. |
