JJ was about to say a ‘yeah right’ to her when he realised what she meant. “You were... look we should get you check over. Do you know who did it?” He asked her knowing the way he felt he would go and sort something out with the person that did. Up until a few hours ago Jess was just someone he was trying to help, now she was his sister and no one did that to his family. He wouldnt have accepted it if it was Teresa and not Jess either. There was a line and someone had just crossed it.
They already knew, Jackson wasn’t sure if he wanted to run and hide or do anything about it. “They do, why did she tell now?” He asked not sure if there was a reason but he soon found out about his other sister. “I didnt want her to do that, I didnt ask for this Jess. I didnt know any of this until now. Is she okay? Shannon I mean.” He asked not too sure if he wanted to say mum or not because right now to his knowledge his mum had just died.
Jackson wanted to argue back at her, how as giving him a life by leaving him for another family. He loved the family he had and was grateful to them for giving him a chance to be a part of a family like theirs. “I didnt know that, I... I don’t know my family.” He said trying to get his head around everything though the more he thought about it the more he wanted the thinking to stop. “Why would I yell? She gave me up for a better life is what you said. I can’t yet at that because I’ve a great family right here.” He said trying to work out if meeting Shannon was a good or bad idea.
“Readjust to being herself? I’m not following you.” He said not sure what she was adjusting to though getting shot sounded like she was into something pretty bad in the first place. His mind had reached so many places with that thought, gang members was he the son of some mafia guy or hired killer. No he was the son of Martin and Kristina, the two people he knew in the world and trusted most.
“A mistake, no I just... how would you feel knowing all of this Jess. My dad lied to me about you, he kept that from me and so did you.” He said knowing that Martin had explained Jess wanted to tell him herself but then when did he actually get involved. Jackson just wanted to be sure that she was sure on it before he got any further involved. “Can I? I mean can you ask her for me?” JJ asked not sure if it was a good idea but then he had gone this far so why not go down the rabbit hole entirely.
Jackson watched as she didnt take his hand. “I didnt mean to yell at you and there’s no excuse for it. I dont know what to do Jess, you tell me this and my mother dies and now I’ve a whole other family I know nothing about. How am I supposed to react to that?” He asked her not sure what was okay anymore because nothing felt okay to him. He was mad at Martin and scared to death that he didnt know what way was where or what to do about anything. The three people he trusted most, one was dead, the other he was mad at and that person wasn’t even home and Teresa she was in no state for him to drop this onto her.
Jackson followed Jess out to the curb as he rolled his eyes when she mentioned the name Cross. “You didnt have to call him, I could have taken you home.” He said though right then he wasn’t sure that was such a great idea. Maybe better that Even did pick her up. “I’m sorry okay, I just don’t know what to do about any of it. How am I supposed to act around a sister I didnt know existed? Do I hug you, shake your hand or just yell at you some more because I’ve no idea.” He explained still not sure how or what to do about things, his dad would know but then being mad at him prevented him asking at least for that night.

don't apologize First he was accusing her of being drunk and now all the sudden he seemed to know what was best for her? "I'm fine" she demanded. Anyone else and she might have agreed, but she hardly was going to give him the pleasure of being the protective one. There was a glare. Jess didn't want his help, in fact she was wishing she'd never said anything to him about anything.
"It's not my story to tell Jackson." She stated. Jess was a fan of believing that people should be accountable for themselves. "Oh yeah because I was totally planning it landed on my dad's lap two decades after he thought she was dead! I got enough on my plate too Jackson. If she wants to tell you or if dad wants to tell you. That's on them. Don't look at me to have all the answers I don't!" She was mad, she was mad that Shannon had kicked all this up with no regards for how Gibbs or Jess would take it. Much less Jackson when he found out. Now look where they were.
"Because you are upset Jackson! You were just yelling at me!" She was on the offensive now. "You are alive because of what she did!" Jess reconfirmed though she hadn't looked up from her phone as she leaned on the wall. Why was she still giving him the benefit of an answer? She didn't magically have all the answers.
“Don't look at me! I'm not her.” Jess was going to stand by that. If it was one thing she was, it was being stubborn. "You think this is easy on me? I'm still processing things too and what I get twenty questions and you yelling at me. I'm not getting into the middle of you and your dad. But he didn't lie." She knew he had just called her a liar too.
Jess was still dealing her dad realizing that his wife was still alive after some two and a half decades. It wasn't easy on anyone and yet here was JJ thinking everyone should just bend over backwards. They all needed each other but he was pushing Jess away. Jess was one of the few people that stopped trying so hard when others pushed her out. Unless it was her dad, that was different. JJ she didn't know from Adam.
"At the rate you are going, you might as well pretend I still don't exist" she fired off. "He's pretty much a brother to me." Not that Jackson would know anything about that, since he seemed to think like some egotistical jerk. She still had to get her car from... yeah she was probably going to crash at Evan's or something because there was no way she was sticking around here. "Don't apologize" She wasn't going to explain that her family simply DID NOT apologize to each other? Oh he was going to be hit like a hammer with the family rules if he wasn't careful. "I think you should be patching things up with your dad. He does care about you, ya know. None of this is his fault. He's the one who didn't ask questions all those years ago." Jess wasn't even alive then.

“No you’re not fine if you’ve been drugged, you’re not a doctor.” He stated knowing that he would do the same thing if they weren’t related either. He wasn’t about to let her make a bad choice in not going to the hospital if he could do anything about it. JJ just glared back equally at her, he was trying to help now he understood what was going on though he should have taken her straight to the hospital. No home just straight to Med and they would know if she would be alright. So much for trying to do the right thing he thought.
Not her story but he wanted to know what was going on in his life, what his life actually was or rather who he actually belonged to. Martin and Kristina were family, the only one he knew of and even that had been rocked that evening. Jackson had overlooked the fact that Jess was in this as much as he was, she found family was out there and also his real dads ex if that was what she was. “Fine they can tell me but you know more than you’re letting on. You’re not stupid Jess, do they even know you are here or have told me?” Jackson asked wondering if he needed to be surprised if someone else came around asking the same things.
“I know and... what did you think i’d do?” He asked her not sure how he was supposed to react to any of what he had found out that night. The party was just that a party, something happened to Jess and Jackson had tried to do the right thing. His dad lied to him, now he has another family and the girl he thought was just a girl was actually his sister. Jackson had no answer for her when she didnt look up from her phone, he was alive because of what someone else had done. Someone he didnt even know and he had no idea what she was like at all.
“No you’re not and I dont think it’s easy on you because I know how I feel.” Jackson was still figuring out what to do in his own head and when it came to expressing himself he wasn’t exactly the best at it. If he snapped at people then a snap for him a storm inside. “You asked him to keep the truth hidden, he didnt and he told me when he had to. Not because he wanted to.” JJ was trying to explain why he was so annoyed, it was like being lied to by the one person he trusted most in the world his dad.
“I don’t want to pretend you dont exist, I know you do and you’re my sister like it or not. We’re related.” He stated knowing that he couldnt just walk away from her now knowing what he knew now. Evan Cross a brother to her, well he was the enemy firm so brother not so much Jackson thought though he wasn’t about to argue with Jess about that. He was already on thin ice already. Don’t apologise, what was he supposed to do to make things any better? Sorry for snapping at her, sorry for being a jerk but it was just a really bad day and he wasn’t handling it very well.
“He didnt?” Jackson asked not sure how much Jess knew about things but he guessed it was more than she was saying. “I want to patch it up but... he’s lost his wife, i’ve made things worse and what am I supposed to say to him. I’m an engineer and I couldnt fix my own mother, I can fix lots of things but the people I love most no. I want to patch things up but I dont know if he wants to.” Jackson knew he was being stupid as it was Martin, the man was his father though JJ didnt know how to make any of it better. He had upset Jess to the point of her asking to be picked up, Martin was likely still at the hospital and JJ didnt want to dump all of this on the man too.

don't apologize Jess didn't even remember much of what happened if anything at all. "You don't get to tell me what's right for me." Jess was hard to work up, she was so patient but JJ had pushed all the wrong buttons and now it was like trying to stop a freight train. Right now she felt so... broken. Jess wanted her dad. She was feeling like a little kid that just wanted to retreat behind their parent to protect them. Though she didn't let any of this show behind her green gaze.
She ignored the question about no one knowing she was there. It wasn't like Jess knew anything about Shannon either. The woman had just landed in her dad's lap after some twenty odd years. "No you're right I am not stupid but I respect people's right to privacy. I don't get to digging into their personal lives. I'm not about to just spill out my dad's personal life either. I respect his right to keep that to himself. You gotta go to the source. It's not my place; that's his decision and his alone what he wants to tell." Her dad was hurting from all of this. Gibbs wasn't ready and Jess had explained that. What did JJ not get about that.
"You know nothing about me. You don't have a clue how I feel right now" Jess usually related well to people, but this had been an uphill battle from the beginning. Maybe this had been a mistake. Maybe Shannon and Gibbs were better off without such an accusatory person in their lives. “Then blame me. But don't you dare blame him.” Sure there were times everyone was upset with their dads but even when she was mad at Gibbs they never stopped talking. "Your dad will always bend over backwards. If I knew NOTHING else about him that would be enough to know that you have a family that loves you." She was pretty sure that Shannon would be happy to know that JJ was thriving. "Stop being a pessimist" she added.
"Pull that attitude with my dad and so help me I hope he teaches you some ounce of respect." Gibbs and Jess never yelled at each other. Evan didn't yell at her, Hunter didn't yell at her. Hell even Martin didn't yell at her. Martin seemed like a man who could instill manners in his children. JJ must be the outlier? Maybe he was just upset. Jess didn't know and right now she felt so hurt she didn't even care.
"That's not my call. He's your dad." When Evan got there Jess didn't even turn back as she got in the car. Not realizing that venting to Evan was going to end her at the hospital later.

With all due respectAren't you going to reciprocate? Do I always have to talk sense into people?
[attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]Martin heard the commotion. He'd stopped by the house after his lunch with Sofia to find the two fighting just as Jess was leaving. He put a hand on JJ's shoulder before pulling him into a hug. Martin had already been slapped by Teresa, he might as well go for letting Jackson take out his frustration too. "You may want to reach out to Teresa, I'm afraid she may try something stupid." He mentioned. Martin really didn't know what to do with things right now.
Even now Martin wasn't asking questions about what was going on. He had never been the one to inquire into everything. Not unless he felt he needed to be involved. "It's going to storm. Perhaps we should do in before the rain hits?" Not that Martin cared but in the Chicago winters they were hardly good for one's health. Trying to get Jackson to open up wasn't going to be easy but Martin had to try and reach out. Jackson probably didn't want to talk but Martin wasn't walking away. Sure Teresa was having things rough too but she wasn't finding out everything else at the time either.

She was right, what right did he have to tell her what to do other than the fact he was her brother but even that, yeah he hadn’t known that until a few hours ago and it still seemed strange to him. He had always wondered what his family was like, not the great one he had but the other one the one that had given him up and not once did he imagine anything like it. No they had a castle or they couldnt take him on some adventure and had lost him but then as the years had gone on there wasn’t any evil parents to be taken away from.
In fact there wasn’t anything wrong at all, he had a great family a loving one and a family that he cared about though now all of that felt as if it was under threat in one night. His mother was gone, he was fighting with his father and now Jess was there telling him he had another family that he hadn’t a clue about and he was alienating her too. “His private life, yeah how can i get to anything when I dont even know if I want to.” He said not entirely sure if he wanted to go and step into another life while his was great as it was. He had a sister a father and up until that day a mother who would know what to do right now.
What if they didnt even what to know him? What if Jess had over shot on it and they didnt want anything to do with him because that would be easier now. To pretend that none of it had happened, that he was simply lost to the state and he had a family. Was he really ready to get to know a sister, mother and father he hadn’t known about all of his life. Because what if he had imagined it all wrong, what if in his head there wasn’t any good reason that he had been left or simply that they didnt want to deal with him.
In his head he hadn’t considered that Jess might be figuring it out for herself too, she had her father’s ex or previous or well his something to deal with. Her dad and now him being a pain in the backside too well that was just going so well. “I dont even know who to blame.” He snapped at her, he wanted to blame someone for a lot right then but it wasn’t going to help anything. “I know I have a fantastic family, I’ve never doubted that and I’ve always been thankful for that.” He stated trying not to bite her head off anymore though it was tough to be optimistic when his mother had just died.
JJ bit his lip when Jess said her dad would teach him some respect, what right did he have to tell him anything. What he had been taught was from his family, not strangers that thought today was a good day to step back into his life. He was too upset to argue with her as he saw Evan get there; well he had good timing before they started to screaming at each other over something of nothing. Jackson was about to turn and head back into the house when he felt the hand on his shoulder before he was pulled into a hug. He held onto his dad like life itself as he stayed silent listening to him talk about Teresa.
“She’ll be okay dad, I’ll talk to her.” He said not sure how much sense he could make of everything though if Martin was afraid then he wasn’t going to just let that go. He would make sure he got to Teresa before she did anything remotely stupid. “Do you know where she is?” He asked. Family, it was what they did when things were difficult as Jackson tried to put everything else out of his head. No he didnt raise his voice, or shout at people and what must Jess think of him now as he tried his best to keep everything from his face other than the plain look he had practiced over the years.
He wasn’t the kind to just lose it, he was level headed and kept a lid on everything. Yeah that was going so well right about now as he let go of Martin still not entirely forgiving the man for not telling him sooner. His lack of questions were normal and JJ wasn’t sure how he would have handled that too, he didnt talk about his feels without a crow bar and he didnt let people into his head because he was good at keeping a lid on everything. He looked at the sky and nodded to Martin. “Sure, did you eat anything? Want a hot drink?” He asked looking for any reason to distract himself from his own head as he looked at his dad. “How are you doing?” He knew it was a loaded question and if anything remotely resembled ‘fine’ he knew it was a lie but then he wasn’t even sure after what had been said if Martin would want to speak to him at all.

With all due respectAren't you going to reciprocate? Do I always have to talk sense into people?
[attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]Martin did not like to fight with anyone. He was more of the stern disciplinary peace keeper. Not that he wasn't one to show how much he cared about his family, because he did show them. Martin rested a hand on JJ's back as he could feel that protective fatherly instinct setting in. Not that it hadn't been there before but he had heard the way that Jess had left. Though Martin was a man of action, he didn't like to wallow around without some sort of plan to move forward.
"Give everyone a few days, let emotions start to sort themselves out." JJ had more on his plate than any of the three of them. He wasn't going to pin point directly to JJ that never worked well. Martin was wise and usually had more round about ways to getting through to his son. Emotions were high, tensions were even higher and it was the perfect storm right now. Martin was trying to keep calm right now himself but he was really falling apart on the inside.
Then JJ said he would talk to Teresa. Martin nodded his head. Taking his phone out and opening the app for tracking her phone. The kids were old enough he didn't have to track their phones. It was more of an emergency thing. If one of them got into trouble. Martin really didn't nose around too much in their business unless he had reason to do so. "The nightclub on Delancy" Martin could tell Jackson was trying to put on the 'nothing is wrong face'
"If you need to talk Jackson, you know that no one is going to judge you" Teresa was a lot like Kristina in those regards. So Martin could speak for her. "This is hard. On all of us. But we are in this together." He wanted to remind JJ that he wasn't alone and it was okay to fall apart when Teresa wasn't looking. "Dr. Austin refused to let me leave without eating something." he pointed out. Dr. Austin had been a friend of the family for a few years. Well they were on a first name basis but it felt awkward to use that in front of the kids over the years. It had always been Dr. Austin.
Martin wasn't usually the type to open up, but maybe if he did maybe he could get JJ to do some of the same? He didn't want to alienate his children. "Still processing things." Everywhere Martin looked her saw Kristina. Hell he hadn't even been able to pick lunch earlier because he was used to Kristina being the picky eater and making the decision. "Seeing things, hearing things, having to take a step back." He stated. Making things simple to understand as much as he could. Martin had an idea how Jackson was feeling about everything.

It was the knowing what to do part that had him stumped, he had snapped and yelled at Jess who didnt deserve it and he knew that. He just had a bad day and seemed to be fighting with everyone who came near. His dad included. JJ was still trying to understand how the man who he trusted with everything in his life could keep that secret from him, even if Jess had asked he was his son unless Martin just wanted rid of him but then yeah there were plenty of times over the years he could have done that and he hadn’t.
“Yeah and then she’ll just go running off to whoever and tell more family secrets. I swear the next person that tells me ‘it’s not my story to tell’.” He said without thinking though that line had him madder than ever. The one thing about his dad was he had his ways to get through to him, not directly but he understood him. He was angry at everyone who hadn’t told him, confused and just sad because now he had lost his mother the only one he had known since time began.
JJ couldnt stop himself from grinning when he watched Martin take out his phone, yeah he didnt mind being tracked but then it was handy to do. Especially at a time like that when he needed to find his sister and figure out what he could do to help her. “She goes to a nightclub?” He said shaking his head, honestly what went on in his sisters head was a mystery at times and none more so than now. He might have said something a little sarcastic about not being related but that now just hurt more than anything else though it was probably best not to drop all of that on Teresa yet.
His nothing is wrong face obviously wasn’t good enough to fool Martin though it never really had been. “I’m not going to tell her anything yet, if she’s already at the nightclub I wouldnt want to push her any further.” He said though they all knew he was adopted so it was probably just something that was a matter of time before his family appeared or he found out about them. JJ tried to smile and nod but it was a barely there gesture in the end. “I know, that goes for you too.” He said knowing that he’d probably find time on his own to go and fall to pieces rather than show anyone.
It had been strange that he had always been that way, he didnt really show much to people unless like that day it was too much. “At least she’s on your case to eat.” He said happy that he had someone to look out for him like that, a family friend but it was tough to see any doctor as a friend when it was always Dr. Austin. “I’ll add to it too because I’m on breakfast duty so I’ll have it ready for you.” He stated deciding that it was the least he could do, it wasn’t that he wouldnt do that on a normal day but anything to give him a purpose to do something more than just sit and think.
JJ listened to him talk trying to understand, he didnt know what it was like to lose a wife like that sure he was divorced but that was different to her being taken away. It was hard not to see his mother everywhere in the house, even the feeling that she would walk through the door at any point and act as if everything were normal. “It’s normal I guess but it will get better. You know that i’m here right, any time.” He said deciding that despite what else was going on he could at least be there for his family.
“I’m sorry I couldnt fix her dad.” He muttered still trying to figure out how he could make things for Whittech and yet he couldnt fix his own mother. “I really miss her.” He added wishing that she would just walk out of the house and meet them as if it was all just a nightmare. He didnt know what to feel anymore, was he still mad with Martin about not being told, yes he was. Did he want to help his dad, yes he did. Would he do anything for the man, sure he would but it was all mixed up in his head as he tried to figure out was what right and what wasn’t.

With all due respectAren't you going to reciprocate? Do I always have to talk sense into people?
TAGS || @username [attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]Martin was trying very hard to walk a line between what Jackson was going through and the devastation they shared. Hearing Jackson mention the night club Martin just shook his head. "She has to go where her clients are." He shrugged. He knew why Teresa was there so it didn't bug him as much as it probably could have. "You know the night club? The one we visited last year for her award thing?" Martin was getting old his memory wasn't what it used to be.
There was a moment that Martin thought about what he was doing before he took his son in a man hug. They were at home it was just the two of them. They both needed it but he wasn't going to give him the 'it gets better speech' or anything else that made him feel like he wasn't going to be able to handle it. He'd just wanted him to know the door was open.
"That doesn't mean you get to skip out eating son." Martin shook his head. He was glad that there were people looking out for him but he was trying to do the same and this was Martin's responsibility to be the one responsible for the family. Not Jackson's. But he couldn't deny he was proud of Jackson taking the initiative to step up when it was needed. He was thankful and appreciative. It showed on his face just not so much in words. Martin wasn't always good with words unless he had time to think about them. Martin was a listener who when he spoke usually had something wise to say.
When Jackson started blaming himself Martin decided he had to intervene. "Doctor's and Engineers are the same thing son. Don't take this on yourself." His voice was the fatherly advice tone he got. Somewhat stern but not disciplinary. Hearing Jackson say he missed Kristina about broke Martin on the inside. "We all do." He just put an arm around Jackson for a brief second. Though Martin just wanted to hang onto both his children and not let go.
There was so much going on that Martin wasn't really sure what to say. "Let's go find your sister." He meant together for a reason. He wanted to show Jackson that he wasn't thrusting all of this onto his son. Teresa might be more receptive to talking to Jackson than Martin right now; but he didn't want to Jackson to think Martin was skirting his responsibilities. He handed Jackson his car keys. Martin was particular about his mercedes. "You can drive." He offered. So maybe he was trying to make up for being a complete jerk without actually saying anything.

Clients, he knew she had to go where they wanted her too but not right now and not right after they knew the news though everyone was different in how they deal with things. Jackson was bugged, he didnt know what to do or think and he needed his sister so did Martin. “Yeah I know the place, with the frew frew wall paper.” He said as he grinned for a moment at Martin. The man was still sharp as a tack but at times there were those moments where age might have showed a little. If he could be half as sharp as Martin when he was his age then JJ would be happy.
When Martin hugged him he wasn’t sure if he wanted to laugh or cry, instead he opted for his usual upset state of hugging back and saying nothing at all. He was glad there wasn’t that ‘it gets better’ speech because honestly how could this get better at all? He had lost his mother, alienated a half sister, angry at his father and his own sister wasn’t even there to tell him what to do about any of it. She was at a club. There were days when there were no words and this was one of those days.
JJ gave his dad a look as he rolled his eyes, “Since when have I ever skipped out on eating?” He asked not minding the responsibility. Okay so the days after he had been presumed dead when he was a Marine, yes he didnt eat for a day or two and after Ashlyn he did the same then but he could pick at food now and again that counted as eating in his head. Taking responsibility for means, it was the least he could do to just be there after everything Martin had done for him in his life. Seeing the thankful and appreciative look he nodded, “Yeah well, didnt say breakfast was going to be edible but still.” He stated, “You’re going to eat three or more meals a day, trust your kids to see to it.” There wasn’t going to be a chance at all that the man would miss anything if they had anything to do with it.
Oh he was taking it on himself, why was it could could make a toaster fly but when it came to fixing a person he hadn’t a clue. JJ noticed the fatherly advice tone though he just nodded, if he could have fixed something one thing to help the doctors or help his mother. Jackson wrapped his arms around his dad for a moment before he pulled away, guys didnt cry, Marines didnt cry they got the job done he thought to himself. The job was Teresa he thought focusing on one thing at a time to get through the rest of the day.
“You sure dad?” He asked knowing that he could go get her on his own but he would be glad for the company. There was never a day that he had thought Martin skirted his responsibilities, there were days when he wondered how the man had done it in the first place but never skirted. When Jackson took the car keys handed to him he grinned for a moment looking at them knowing how particular he was about the Mercedes. “Are you sure about letting me drive? What if I hit something? Or scrape a barrier?” He asked innocently, so he was a better driver than that but still he was trying to accept the offer of making up and lightening things as much as he could. “Might even go for take out too since i’ve got wheels?” He stated thoughtfully nudging Martin gently.
