"Delta Thirty−Seven what is your eta?""Holy Hannah look at that place." It had been mostly silent for the duration of the flight, Sams comment was the first one in a while. They had been able to see the burning building for several miles out and with each moment they got closer and closer it only seem to get worse. Bryan quickly replied to the dispatcher before he started to move the aircraft a little lower, "I know, keep an eye out for a decent landing spot." ideally they would have a nice large and empty area to land the helicopter in but that was an ideal world and Bryan had mastered the art of tight landings long ago when he was in the military. Thankfully there was a clear area, just down the street from the large cluster of firetrucks and other vehicles belonging to EMS. Mark was already out the door before the engines even had a chance to slow, with his bag over his shoulder he took off at a sprint towards the building, keeping an eye out for. He did not bother with a stretcher because it would only add more weight to the already loaded down aircraft. By the time he reached the building the firefighters already had one person out and were slowly lowering the second down as easy as they could. Both of them looked bad, like really bad; he did not know which was worse, the one with the little tree sticking out of her side or the one who look like a tree fell on him. Only good thing was that one of the two were conscious. "I am Mark Edney with the Medevac, which one of these guys are we taking?" he asked as he started digging in his bag for gauze, pulling a large pack out he opened it and pressed it to an already soaked one on Peters side, "How long has he been out, what fluids have you given him, what was his last pulse rate and does anyone know his blood type?" he fired off a series of questions in rapid order, all things he needed to know, well almost. The blood type he could get away with, they always had extra packs of type O with them, anyone can take it and you never knew when you'd encounter someone needing blood. Tag: Shani McGuire @catherine

Catherine had made it down the ladder and out of the building but it had taken Shani a bit of coaxing. Shani was definitely the braver of the two women. The blonde looked up as they headed for the chopper. Catherine spit out Peters blood type. She had looked up his medical information enroute to the scene. It was a thing of hers she would try to access whatever records she could if it was possible to do so. Personnel records for the department were amazing. Not to mention she had been a patient of hers back when she worked at the hospital. Cat didn't really think anything of it as she rambled off the information he wanted. Though she was falling apart. "I'm coming with" she demanded to the other medics. No she wasn't going to explain why; just she was going. Though she didn't know if Shani was going to come and keep her sane or what. Catherine wouldn't judge. Cat didn't want Peter to wake up in a helicopter alone. She remembered a discussion in the hospital about him hating heights. "He um... he doesn't like heights" she mumbled out. She wasn't a fan of heights but she wasn't terrified of them either. Catherine jumped up into the chopper without a second thought as she hung his iv line up where it belonged inside the chopper to keep it above his head. @peanut Shani McGuireTemplate by Ulla of Adoxography

Shani was the sort not to show fear if she could help it, just another day she told herself as she did her best to coax Catherine down the ladder. To Shani it was easier to go home and hug her children and fall into her pillow after the day was done than go to pieces when people needed her most. Once their feet were on the ground Shani felt a whole lot better about things as she glanced at the medic that ran over to them. Their helicopter ride had landed which was great timing on their side of things.
The rambling of information was good as Shani demanded to go with Peter. She knew that was going to happen given their conversation in the building though the flight crew, she wondered if they knew what was about to hit them. “Yeah, me too. I’m not leaving my partner on this one.” She stated knowing she would argue with anyone who said no. “So Mark, you’ve got two extra medics for this flight.” She said with her best warm smile.
It was perhaps better to leave the arguing for later if need be she thought as she followed Catherine into the helicopter. Shani made her way to a new pair of gloves as she started on opening a few new gauze packs to stick in place of the ones that were soaked through. “So we need to do anything special for this first class flight?” Shani asked looked towards Catherine as she nodded encouragingly.

The paramedic with the multi-color hair was quick to reply to him with everything he needed to know which was very helpful. Surprisingly he had not been out for that long, and apparently he had been awake for a good amount of time before passing out. Mark started back towards the helicopter when he heard rainbow hair lady say she was coming with them, usually that was a call that Bryan made but before Mark could ask Cat was already in the aircraft. Then the second medic who was following behind rainbow bright said she was also coming along, Mark shook his head but did not say anything, he had other things to focus on. "I thought we were picking up one person, not three!" Bryan called to him once everyone was settled, "Things changed!" Mark replied as he pulled the door to the chopper shut, before he did anything else Mark handed both women each a headset, both to protect their ears from the noise of the engine and to allow them to better communicate with everyone else, less yelling. “So Mark, you’ve got two extra medics for this flight.” he started pulling various things out, “So we need to do anything special for this first class flight?” Mark was half tempted to give them the sit down and be quiet speech that Bryan seemed to fond of but he also had a feeling that the woman meant well and wanted nothing more than to help. "Keep pressure on anything that is bleeding, I am going to start a line for the transfusion." Mark replied, he handed Shani more gauze before he started cleaning the dirt and grime off Peters arm to better access a vein. "You keep and eye on his vitals and if he happens to wake up keep him calm." the last thing they needed was for a freaked out patient. No sooner did Bryan get the chopper into the air and Mark got the line started did Peters eyes slowly open. It took a long moment for the green bloodshot eyes on actually focus on anything. Peters head was still foggy and now there was a rather loud rhythmic sound that only made his head hurt more, his slowly glanced around to the faces above him and then moved his eyes back to the ceiling...the rather low ceiling. Peter closed his eyes tight and shook his head, "No..no..Jacks I don't want to be here." he mumbled, Peter tried to push himself up but only one side of his body seemed to work, "Easy bud we are just going for a ride." Mark said as he pushed Peter back down, if the man was stupid enough to try and move with his injuries then he'd get being pushed. Tag: @catherine Shani McGuire(Yes...he did call her that.)

“Yeah, me too. I’m not leaving my partner on this one. So Mark, you’ve got two extra medics for this flight.” Catherine was glad that Shani was there. Catherine was glad for many number of reasons. She just glanced at her partner glad that she knew what to do because right now Catherine’s mind was elsewhere. “I’ll keep him calm him if he wakes up” she spoke towards Mark. She remembered Peter telling her that he didn’t like flying. It was one of their many discussions in the hospital when she had been scared. He had tried to make her feel better and she distinctly remembered flying. "No..no..Jacks I don't want to be here." Catherine put a hand on the side of Peter’s neck. “I am right here with you.” She whispered as she did her best to keep him quiet. “Tell me a story” she added her voice still a whisper as she was close to his ear. Catherine was worried, and she knew he might fade in and out but maybe she could distract him while he was awake. She was helping control the bleeding too with her other hand. @peanut Shani McGuireTemplate by Ulla of Adoxography

Shani was all but ready to fight their case for going along with Peter. He was their patient, Catherine’s significant other of sorts and Shani was Catherine’s partner and was hardly going to let her do this on her own. She was surprised when there was little to no argument with Mark over what was going on, maybe the man just knew better than to tackle two female paramedics who would raise another kind of hell if they did.
Shani took the gauze she was handed as she set about keeping pressure on anything that was bleeding. In the light of the helicopter she could see a lot more clearly and Peter was bleeding like a sieve, within the light it became a lot easier to see just how bad a shape he was in. Shani smiled at Catherine as she spoke about keeping Peter calm, “See extra hands are always good.” She said with a wink toward Mark and a grin toward Catherine. It could never hurt to try and say how useful they were being even if it did risk annoying Mark a little.
Jacks? Shani figured she might have misheard over the noise in the chopper though when Peter tried to push himself up she lost her grip on the gauze as she moved it once he was pushed back down by Mark. “Story time, got to love that.” She said enthusiastically before she looked to Mark and turned her face away from Peter and Catherine. She still kept her hands applying pressure to points where he was bleeding as she hoped they would reach the hospital fast enough for him to be saved.
She looked toward Mark for a moment, “Scale of one to ten, how bad?” She asked quietly hoping Peter and Catherine would be oblivious to what she was asking. A third opinion was always good and Mark was completely detached from the medics and the patient. Shani could be as hopeful as anyone else and for Catherine she was praying for Peter but she at least wanted to know if she was praying for a miracle or just a slight nudge in the right direction. She had an idea it was miracle time but a third person to confirm or deny was always good to have.

He was trying to tell them that he hated flying and the nice lady was asking him to tell her story. "Why me, you should be the one telling me a story, but I also feel like I'd fall asleep and ruin your story time." Peter paused and caught his breath, the simple sentence took a lot of energy, "That would be rude of me. Besides...my stories are stupid, mostly about my cat and how he likes to talk to the birds." he knew he had a cat, what its name was exactly he could not remember but he knew he had one. A fluffy white one. "One time she caught a bat and brought it inside, I don't know where she got it but it was missing a head." he smiled at the fuzzy memory, "I like that cat." Peter closed his eyes again, "My sister is allergic to them." he added softly, now which sister he was talking about was unknown.
“Scale of one to ten, how bad?”
Mark looked up, his eyes meeting the rather hopeful gaze in Shani's, he looked from the paramedic to Peter then back again, "Honestly." Mark said as he looked at Peter again, he did not know how well she knew Peter and usually he'd give whoever was asking a simple answer of "He'll be fine" but with someone with medical knowledge things were different, you couldn't stretch the truth like you do to normal people. "He's lost a lot of blood, his head is starting to swell and his pulse is all over the place. I give it another five minutes, maybe less before he crashes and really goes into shock. I don't know how he hasn't already, maybe he is one of the weird ones, we occasionally get them." Mark opened another pack of gauze and handed it to Shani, "As much as I want to tell you I have seen worse, it doesn't get much worse than this." he added quietly.

Catherine shook her head. “I like stories about cats” she assured him. “I’m a cat” she shrugged. Well she meant as in her nickname was cat. “Except you know I come when I am called. Unlike my four legged counterparts.” She stated. Catherine was not used to other medical personnel taking over; but she trusted her partner and her partner trusted these people. Catherine tried not to listen to the medical jargon but as an EMS it was hard not to do.
"As much as I want to tell you I have seen worse, it doesn't get much worse than this." The words reached her ears and she took a few deep breathes. “Even breathes for me okay” she stated as she put the oxygen mask back to his face. Catherine glanced up at her partner, worry laced her face. Cat did best she could to hide it from Peter. “Peter look at me” she stated trying to keep him alert. No letting him close his eyes was bad and wasn’t going to help. Catherine did what she could. “Peter look at me please?” she whispered out again, this time being polite.

Shani was listened to two things at once, there was a conversation about cats which entirely confused her own head as to which Cat they were talking about. The four legged furry ones or the two legged female one on the helicopter ride. Then when Mark said the word ‘honestly’ Shani nodded. There was no other way to be in life she thought; honest was the best way even if it was bad news she thought though by the way that Mark was looking. He was hardly going to tell her that it was all just superficial and a couple of days of bed rest he would be brand new.
It was what she was hoping for but her eyes and head and heart were all working against each other. Shani listened to what Mark said, she nodded now and again and at that mention of five minutes before shock really set in Shani tried to smile if only for Catherine’s sake. “Yeah he’s a weird one, believe it or not he didn’t turn up for a date with my partner.” She said as she took the gauze handed to her from Mark and started to apply pressure again to where it was needed.
When the ‘seen worse’ came up Shani was eternally hopefully until ‘doesn’t get much worse’ well it looked as if her head had gotten a rude awakening. Shani smiled over at Catherine doing her best to be positive about it. The worry for Peter was clear in Cat’s face as Shani shook her head. “He might not have seen worse but... I have. He’s tough besides I’ve got to have a real friendly conversation with him about you so trust me he can’t give up now.” Shani stated reaching with her free hand for a moment to hold Catherine's before she looked back to Mark, yes well that was her first half truth of that day.
She truthfully had seen worse than Peter when she was in the IDF, it was that thought that was sobering because she knew how those cases ended. In this case they had medical expertise and were heading for a hospital not in the middle of a desert praying that help would arrive. “Promise me we are going to do everything we can!” She stated glancing at Mark, “Mark, he's family and we did not just dig him out from under that for him not to make it.” She stated, “Doesn’t get much worse.... so there is a slightly worse than this.” Shani said quietly enough that no one would hear but Mark. She was trying to be hopeful or at least hear someone else have hope that they were going to save Peter.

"Mark, we should be there soon." Bryan called to Mark, the younger medic looked up towards the cockpit. "You know there are speed limits right?" he called back. Up in the cockpit Bryan was shaking his head, "On land yes. The hospital is standing by." Bryan replied. Mark nodded, and turned his attention back to the conversation going on in his space, Rainbow Bright hair was doing a good job of keeping Peter calm and distracted. “Except you know I come when I am called. Unlike my four legged counterparts.” Peters head was still foggy, and as much as he was trying to focus, he was not doing as a good a job as he thought. He only heard part of Cats words and what he did manage to catch caused him to laugh. He could not help it, just how she worded it all sounded funny. He closed his eyes and winced as he laughed again, the dull ache in his chest quickly turned into a sharp pain; something poked something that it should not have been. “Peter look at me.” “Promise me we are going to do everything we can!” Mark looked from Peter over to Shani, “Mark, he's family and we did not just dig him out from under that for him not to make it. Doesn’t get much worse.... so there is a slightly worse than this.” He did not immediately reply, he attention was taken back to Peter because the previously talkative man was now quiet. "At least he still has his leg." Even if it was a mangled mess, that was one good thing Peter had going for him. “Peter look at me please?” The worry was clear in Cats voice, as much as Shani tried to keep her hopes up, there was only so much you could do when you're looking at someone you care about laying bloody and beaten before you. "Come on Peter. Say something." Mark added, the mans heart rate had only increased a couple of beats, nothing drastic and his blood pressure was ever so slowly dipping, it was like his body could not decide if it wanted to do something or just stay where it was at the moment. The only change was his breathing rate, that was increasing with each passing minute. " I am going to give him something to slow his breathing and hopefully increase his blood pressure, just need to keep his heart going." At this point Mark was mostly talking to himself, it was something he did and it helped him focus. Tag: Shani McGuire @catherine

With Peter passed out Catherine focused on being an extra hand. “Peter” she called his name again and checked for a pulse. At least he was breathing. Cat just got lost in doing her job as she listened to all the voices around her. She wasn’t able to focus on just one. This was hard for her. Hearing something about Shani telling the story of Cat being stood up, it all felt so stupid right about now. Dammit, why did she have to care so much?
Then there was the she had to have the ‘friendly conversation’ bit and Cat laughed under her breathe just a little but her eyes were still on Peter. “You heard that right? You are in trouble with my partner” she told him. Not really sure if he could hear her or not. Shani was practically a sister. Catherine gently squeezed Shani’s hand. Somehow Shani always knew what she needed the most, but the same was true if the rolls were reversed.
Then there was Shani trying to reason that things weren’t the worst. Given the gravity of the situation, it wasn’t funny. But if anyone heard the conversation out of context they might have laughed. The way Shani phrased things sometimes. It never ceased to amaze her.

Shani listened to the chat between Mark and Bryan, it was nice to hear as it reminded her of how a normal call might have gone with Catherine and herself. Nothing too serious but some friendly talk and chat and of course ribbing over anything and everything which now seemed to have gone out of the window. When it was one of your own and someone you knew it was always tough. When that person was hanging on in front of you, it was all she could do to stay focused and at least try to not give up all hope she had left.
The quiet of not hearing Peter talking was the worst sign imaginable, had she just cursed him with a worse than that. It was like uttering the worlds ‘quiet shift’ while on shift. Instant chaos usually followed but this, this was much much worse. Shani tried not to smile at the leg comment but as usual her own strange sense of humour shone through. “He does still have his leg.” She said with a smile as if Mark had said the one thing that had brightened her day no end. She was strange that way.
Hearing Catherine was heart breaking followed by Mark who seemed to be talking to himself but still she understood what he was saying. Keep his heart going, those words cut like a knife through her as she shivered. Shani squeezed Catherine’s hand after she felt her do the same, “He’ll be fine, I mean if it was me after all of that I’d be taking a power nap. Glad of the rest from the kids and the husband.” She stated trying her best to smile as she took a breath glad she was Israeli as it stopped her from being overly emotional.
Shani looked between Mark, Catherine and Peter. “Cat, tell him that I’m Israeli and if he doesn’t talk to you then I can break him in ways that rubble cant.” She said firmly deciding that if nice was going to fail then brute force “You here that Peter and if you think that you get to sleep then I will make sure that Mark here and Catherine go on that date and you lose out on the best woman in your life.” Shani said with a little more force than before, oh when it came to her partner then there was nothing wrong with moving mountains, setting up dates and threatening the injured one. She just hoped that he heard her and would show any sign that either he was terrified or would talk again.

The urge to slip into the darkness was growing stronger and stronger with each moment. He had no idea how long he had his eyes closed, "Jacks, where is Steph?" he asked softly, who was Stephanie again? Peter kept his eyes open and staring at the ceiling of the helicopter,"Is Ben with her?", Mark leaned forward and quickly shined a light in his eyes, Peter did not moved to avoid the light, he had no energy to do anything. "Just a few more minutes and you'll be okay." Mark told him, "Bry what is the hold up?" Mark asked over the radio, "Waiting on another unit to get off the pad." the pilot sounded irritated, "We don't have time to wait!" Mark replied. Catherine was completely trying to block out all conversation going on around her. Things she didn't want to hear, things she didn't need to hear but at the same time... she wanted to do her job. Right now she couldn't so she trusting her partner to make sure the helicopter medics didn't screw things up. Whatever was going on, she wasn't really prepared for this. Catherine didn't mind flying but she felt airsick. Everything compounded and it was just a mess. Power nap. Right. Catherine wanted to believe that, but she knew better. Her instincts even knew better. But she just nodded at her partner. Shani was trying. That meant more to Catherine than she could convey right now. Catherine some how kept her composure. Nothing was making sense. Who was Jacks? Catherine raised a brow. "Steph's on her way to med. She's going to be fine. Ben's with her" that much Catherine knew. Well she knew Ben was going to be with her, but she wasn't going to get into the whole thing of Ben having a crazy daughter to handle before he could get to med thing. That was too much for anyone's head much less someone with a concussion. "You can't take a nap Peter. I know you want to; but I need you to stay awake. Tell me about your cat?" okay most people could talk about their animals. She knew Peter had a cat but nothing else about it.

Hearing Mark and the pilot talk Shani was reminded again as to how bad Peter was. There was nothing worse than being able to do little when she wanted to fix everything. It was easier when it was a stranger, the face or name or even call might haunt you but at the end of the day there was no space where a colleague should be. Shani kept a close eye on what Mark was doing, it was for peace of mind because if anything went wrong then it was on her.
When the mention about Ben’s daughter was left out Shani found the corners of her mouth smiling a little. At least it would make an interesting story to tell him when he came out of it she thought. It was as if she was hearing words that just made it worse, first a hold up, second a nap it simply needed to get better and for things to be fixed fast. “You’re a cat person?” She said loudly chuckling staring at Peter for a moment, if he wanted to sleep then he could do that much later because she would tell at him a lot more if he even thought about closing his eyes for a millisecond longer than was required to blink.
After loudly asking Peter about being a Cat person she glared at Mark. The point in being in a helicopter was to get from A to B in a faster time than crossing land. Right now with her driving she was almost thinking that factoring in not stopping for the front of the ER that she could have gotten there just as fast. “You tell that pilot down there that unless he moves his ass off that landing then this one will land right on top of it.” She snapped although she was trying to keep a calm head for Cat she never suffered fools lightly.
Anyone that took too much time to unload a patient and wasted time managed to get the sharp end of her tongue. It was simply unfortunate that Mark was that person because Peter was hanging on with them that second but ten more was anyone’s guess. He needed a hospital with a lot more care than they could provide. It was hardly far but then someone else taking time with their patient meant that they were almost starting that run again.
