Tess saw him tug at his collar, was he really trying to protest it? The man was about as Romeo’ed up as she had seen a guy. Collar tugging wasn’t done when there was ‘nothing there’, she was a detective and yes murder suspects were not her thing but she could see when something wasn’t quiet right. “Oh come on, you’re one of those ‘we’re only friends types’? Honestly name two people that can be friends like you and Vanessaaa” She said putting a lot more emphasis on the woman’s name.
“Thank you for that, exceptionally competent I dont think I’ve been told that before.” She said smirking as she shook her head. “I was only teasing you, I know you’ve got a super brain up there somewhere so just try taking it in dinosaur steps for those of us... with a lower IQ.” Tess was joking though she didnt doubt for a minute he would have a handle on things more than she could. The fact he had a company that said as much spoke to it though she would get there in the end. It might just take some basic prompting on leaps or some such.
One shift was probably all it was going to take to have him running to the hills, real life was different to the movies and tv shows so she was hoping he would stick around but wasn’t exactly counting on it. If he left on his own then she wasn’t to blame that the tech guy couldnt make a day in the world? Then he had to say deal, “Deal.” She replied nodding, just try not to break the fragile things she thought.
“Ohh beam me up Scottie!” She said chuckling, no no no no no, she wasn’t a geek she simply wasn’t as she caught herself. “Well if you can invent space age stuff it would cut down on travel time, waiting around and you could just transport us into the bad guys place of business rather than having to make it their ourselves. If you make it, can I be test monkey number one?” She asked, well everything had to start somewhere and if she had the chance to be transported across any space, well he had a willing human test person.
Tess couldnt hide her grin at his stern look, “So cute when you’re rattled.” She stated laughing a little as she followed him down the hall to the entrance that wasn’t exactly awe struck. She was sure that when CPD decorated that every door looked the same and there was nothing remarkable about them until the rooms came into view. Then it wasn’t exactly remarkable just practical was the general look.
“Look at Mr. Professional, I take it back tech guy is gone and Professional is in. I mean if we need a distraction tassels and feathers would be a great look, you wanted the full CPD experience? I’m sure the undercover cops could hook us up with something.” She teased as she knocked on the door. It was too good an opportunity to pass up she thought guessing that they would get used to each other eventually even if he was professional about it.

[attr="class","evannah"] [attr="class","evanleft"] [attr="class","evanleft2"] | [attr="class","evanright"] "Figures I would end up with the department's matchmaker," Evan grumbled. Tess would probably take all of their teasing, laughing and poking the wrong way too, but that's what friends did—and Evan and Vanessa had a very close-knit group of friends. It didn't mean there was anything inherently romantic between them, as he was quick to point out. "Honestly, there's no budding relationship in the works. Sorry to disappoint you, Tess. You won't be getting invited to a wedding anytime soon."Then Tess was teasing him about calling her competent. Here they went again. He'd been trying to pay her a compliment—that's all. "Um… was that the wrong thing to say? I'm not always the best when it comes to social interactions. I can sometimes put my foot in my mouth." That was putting it mildly, to say the least. Once Tess had agreed to his deal, he gave a nod. That settled it then. They had an arrangement. Evan flashed her an extraordinarily cocky grin. The last one had turned out pretty well for him, as she well knew. He was still here, after all. Of course Evan picked up on the original series reference immediately. Science fiction cinema had been so defining when it came to developing his interest in engineering—and Star Trek and Star Wars had been amongst his biggest influences. That, and he may or may not have had a penchant for taking apart ordinary household appliances when he was younger. Tess seemed to share at least one of those in common. "You are such a geek!" And, truth be told, he loved it. "Star Trek marathon in the future for us!" There was nothing quite like some good old-fashioned partner-building and few things could bring two partners together as efficiently as them geeking out together. Then there was her eagerness about essentially being a human guinea pig. Most people wouldn't want to take that kind of risk, but perhaps a detective wasn't wired like most people. He couldn't be sure. He'd never really counted one of those among his group of friends before, though he'd begun to consider her as such. But it could have been her geekiness speaking. "You aren't concerned I might scatter your molecules in a transporter accident where you never rematerialize? Or beam you into a wall or something? All sorts of ways things could go horribly wrong, you know."Evan wasn't used to anyone calling him cute—even if it was in reference to him being rattled—though he managed to not embarrass himself by blushing furiously. Yeah, she could laugh it up all she wanted. It wasn't like she knew Vanessa had paid him a compliment about his looks some three years ago when Teresa had locked them in a closet together. And there was no way in hell he was telling Tess that. She was already giving him grief about him being smitten with his best friend. Evan could only sigh as picked up another nickname. Tess had ditched Tech Guy for Mr. Professional all because he'd said no to tassels and feathers on his tactical vest. Like the department would ever approve something like that anyways. If Tess wanted a distraction when they were out in the field, he was reasonably certain he could do better than that. Something less ridiculous, as well. Tess knocked on the door and, after a minute, a young twenty-something-year-old greeted them, giving him a puzzled look. Apparently, Requisitions wasn't used to getting very many civilians down here, even if they were accompanied by a detective with a badge. "Something I can do for the two of you?"Tess Walker [attr="class","evanright2"] |

“Hey, I’m just telling it as the facts appear to this detective. You blush, you like her, you hang out together and it’s not a date... if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck?” She said with a grin, she enjoyed teasing and laughing with a partner and it made a change to get someone who had a decent sense of humour too. “Okay, I’ll believe you this time but I’m not sending back my hat, I swear that the way you talk about her... there’s something there.” She said as she pretended to eye him suspiciously.
There was nothing surer in his head though if he wasn’t at the admitting it point she’d just wait for the ‘by the way, Vanessa and I...’ talk. Tess shook her head at him when he seemed to second guess what he had said to her, “No not the wrong thing to say, it’s nice to hear.” She said grinning as she shrugged, “From one socially awkward person to another, don’t worry about it. My foot never usually leaves my mouth, thought you’d seen that already with me practically accusing you of a relationship with your ‘friend’.” She added though really that was more a statement of facts as she had seen them from him.
True she didnt have Vanessa’s side of things but from where she stood, there was something there. When she saw his cocky grin she rolled her eyes, he had won the first bet but then the second one was a little tougher or at least with the way he seemed to be handling things it was a sure thing that she had already lost. Not that she minded at all as he was a lot better than the image she had in her head not too long ago.
Tess glared for a moment before she shook her head at him, “What did I tell you, little geek.” She added as if it made much of a difference. Star Trek was that series, the one that made her feel like there was a universe out there that was bigger than she knew. Where nothing was a boundary and everything could be overcome with team work and a space ship. “Since you mentioned it, sounds great and I’ll bring the snacks just don’t go all Spock on me with the death grip.” She stated, in her mind the original was the best series. Yes there were others which had their merits but none better than Captain James T Kirk.
Risks were part of her job and if she had a ounce of sense she would have picked a nice safe traffic job, instead she handled things that exploded. Not exactly the career for living a long healthy life but then she had lived so far healthy not so much but then pizza and beer who could argue that. Evan was starting to seem like a great partner and more than that a friend but only if he made it to the end of shift. Though so far he was one of those people that she felt lucky to meet.
“It is wrong that being beamed into a wall sounds like fun? Always wanted to be a fly on the wall though in the wall not so sure.” She stated thoughtfully, “Look I trust you not to do that to me but if you did then I’m sure my molecules would haunt you forever. It’s all for science and besides; risk is when the great science things happen right? I mean if you did manage to scatter my molecules the next person stand a greater chance at being put back together correctly, so all for science and fun.”
Was she a little crazy, yes she could be but then staying in the safety zone wasn’t really her thing either. Big leaps for mankind and all. Tess grinned as she thought about what kind of distractions there could be, her mind was already half way through designing his vest with little flower windmills, spinning hypnotic discs and tassels. When the young twenty something year old greeted them Tess smiled warmly. At least the puzzled look was better than her out right, doomed look in the Captains office.
“Now that you mention it.” Tess said with a grin, “My friend here needs a tactical vest for a while. Just wondered if you got my message with the details for the lettering? Think he wanted it to say Scientist.” She stated deciding that actually going down her Mr Professional and Tech guy was going to be a stretch. Still she could have that made up for him later, even if she could get him a call sign with that she thought. “Apparently it’s against department regulations to let a civilian out with us without a fair chance of getting shot in a vest.” She said as she grinned toward Evan.

[attr="class","evannah"] [attr="class","evanleft"] [attr="class","evanleft2"] | [attr="class","evanright"] Evan had established a habit of blushing furiously when teased. Given that Tess still wasn't abandoning her detective's intuition so easily, now seemed like a good time to continue that trend. After all, convincing her otherwise appeared to be an impossible task, as he caught her eyeing him suspiciously. He sighed. "Tell you what. You can be the first person to me 'I told you so,' if anything ever happens between Vanessa and I, but do me a favor? Let's not mention this when we go out for drinks, please." He didn't for a second believe Tess's idea of them would jeopardize their friendship, but it was a risk he was unwilling to take. Vanessa would probably just get a good laugh about it and proceed to tease him mercilessly the rest of the night. Come to think of it, though, he'd probably end up putting his foot in his mouth, if and when he ever asked someone out on a date. Probably one of the reasons he'd never really considered doing just that. Evan admitted as much. "Just for the record, I'm quite certain I would crash and burn with the whole 'will you go out with me' conversation. I'm hopeless." Not that he was saying Vanessa would be that person. Except maybe he had just implied it? Had he inserted his foot into his mouth again? Oh, boy, did Tess ever have him all mixed up right now. Time to deflect from the matter at hand. "Sure! But there's no running from it now. You have verified geek credentials and everything." Personally, Evan would have taken Deep Space Nine, if given the choice, but the original certainly had its appeal as well. Plus, it was the show that had kicked the others off. Getting past some of the overacting, on the other hand, could be challenging, but he supposed it only added to the show's charm. Evan looked at his partner, a little puzzled. Yeah, so Tess was a little crazy, but a little crazy wasn't so bad. Some people needed that sense of danger or risk in their lives. And could he really blame her? It was for science! "Oh, right," the young man snapped his fingers, as if remembering the phone call earlier, and bringing Evan back to reality. "The detective with the odd request." He retreated back into the room, rummaging through his handful of projects. After a minute or two of searching, he reappeared with a tactical vest in hand and shoved it into Evan's arms. "Here. Let me know if you have any issues." He didn't wait around to find out. Trying on the vest, Evan twirled around, much as a model showing off a new outfit would. "So? What do you think? Are we good to go?"Tess Walker [attr="class","evanright2"] |

Seeing him blush Tess grinned, oh she was onto something though turning him a funny colour on his first day wasn’t exactly in the handbook. Still she listened when he spoke and nodded as she placed her hand on her heart. “I swear not to tell a word of this over drinks, hint I might but tell no chance.” She said with a quick grin before she shook her head, “No, I won’t breathe a word of it. I swear.” So she might be annoying at times but he had asked her not to say anything so she would keep quiet no matter how much she wanted to interrogate the two of them on the subject. Tess thought there was something there but thinking it and getting to say I told you so were different though she figured one day she might get to do that.
When it came to dating Tess didnt have the greatest record, the people she met in her day job either had the same issues she did or were criminals so either way her pool of people was short. James, well she was still trying to work that all out as to what was going on and it was far less complicated to just focus on work. “You hopeless? You’ve got to be kidding, I mean have you taken a look in the mirror lately?” She said as she gave him a look that about said she could hardly believe he was hopeless. “So you do want to ask Vanessa that question then?” Tess said with the biggest grin on her face.
“If you want a few pointers then I’m happy to do so, but as before I wont tell a soul.” She offered though really she wasn’t sure if she had mixed him up or he was saying what he wanted to do. Then again Tess wasn’t the dating expert by any means, sure she had been on a few of them but she wasn’t exactly the smoothest person in the world. Not when it came to that. “Fine, verified geek I am but that stay between you and me or I promise to blab everything to Vanessa.” She said giving him a look that said she would, Tess knew it wasn’t on the same scale and she also knew she wasn’t going to say a word which showed as she grinned at him.
Tess rolled her eyes when the young man said she had an odd request though when he came back after searching she laughed. “Oh it’s the best request I’ve made since the cross-dressing case last year.” She said watching as Evan twirled around as she chuckled. “Well don’t you look good in that. You’re wearing the best thing about being in the police department, the gear we get.” She said as sometimes she did think that way at times especially when a new piece of equipment came into use. “Yes we’re good to go if you are?” She asked as she paused for a moment.
“Just make sure to duck if people start shooting okay, the vest can save your life but just don’t think it will save your head.” She was trying to be practical without scaring him half to death before they set foot out of the door. They might not even get shot at she thought though given she had a civilian with her, it would be just her luck.

[attr="class","evannah"] [attr="class","evanleft"] [attr="class","evanleft2"] | [attr="class","evanright"] Tess had to have more dating experience than he did–and she was convinced he had a 'thing' for his best friend. Evan hadn't been in a really serious before. What should he be feeling? Or was he thinking too much? He did that a lot. One of the hazards of being a scientist–a genius. It was hard to just turn that switch off. "I..." Evan continued to hesitate, stuck in a moment of indecision, not sure how to answer. Did he want to ask Vanessa that question. "I'm not sure. Maybe I do?"Evan couldn't believe he was asking this. Maybe, if he pinched himself, he would wake up, and this conversation would turn out to be a bad dream. "Okay. Pointers. What do you have?" It probably sounded like he was caving, but just because he asked for them didn't mean he was committed. He could file them away for future reference. Just in case. "I mean, sure, I take a look in the mirror most mornings." Evan wasn't sure what Tess was getting at. That shouldn't make him any more or less hopeless. "But what does that have to do with anything?"Evan shook his head when he finally got Tess to admit she was a verified geek. He wasn't sure he understood why she seemed to think that was a bad thing, but he would respect her request. His lips were sealed. They would both hold on to the other's secret. "Fine... fine," he laughed, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "I'll keep it on the down low." That was when Tess brought up a cross-dressing case she'd worked last year. Evan raised an eyebrow, curiosity peaked. No way was he letting her leave it at that; he wanted details. "You owe me a story. You can tell me all about it while we head for the Batmobile." This really was going to be fun. Getting out of the precinct and doing some good old fashioned police work. "Yeah," Evan deadpanned. Like he needed to be told to duck, if the bullets started flying. He was a civilian without a gun. Teasing, on the other hand, was his superpower. "That'd be unfortunate. My head is my best feature. The world would be lesser without that knowledge up there." His hesitation was enough for her to know what was going on, sure there might have been a few leaps on her part but then she was a detective. She detecting things and to her it all added up in the age old ‘aww he fancies her’ stage though without the other half to the puzzle she couldnt know for sure but if she did go out with them for drinks then she was pretty sure she would safely be able to bet a round on it. Tess grinned at him and nodded, “I think you know your own mind Dr Cross.” She said still grinning as she nodded, “One thing I can tell you, working this job don’t wait to say things to the people you ‘care’ about. It can quickly be too late. Trust me but I think it’s more than a maybe.”
She hadn’t really had this conversation before mostly because well, maybe she just wasn’t the approachable talk about your life type of person but when he asked for pointers. Did ‘do the exact opposite if what I do’ count as good advice? “First pointer, get out of your own head. Own what you know you feel. It’s a little like red wire green wire when all of them are blue.” She explained doing her best to put in it terms she understood and she hoped he could too. “If all the wires are blue and you cant walk away, it all comes down to intuition and trusting yourself to know the answer. Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith into the unknown.”
So she had plenty of wire analogies for him though really her dating experience consistence of the fact she was still single or sort of. There was James but then that was complicated and that word covered most of what had gone on around that. “Okay, let’s put aside our first few minutes when I thought you were annoying.” She said as she rolled her eyes lightly. “You’re a good looking guy, smart, a geek sure but then no one can hold that against you. If I see that, then I’m pretty sure a woman as smart as Vanessa see’s that too. Just be you and be confident, besides sounds to me like you like her and honestly from what you say she might like you too.” Tess wasn’t usually one to meddle in people’s lives past her job sometimes people just needed a shove in the right direction.
“Good to know, wouldnt want my new partner spilling secrets on his first day.” She tease though she was glad he would keep it quiet. It was tough enough in the department without getting the star ship enterprise left on her desk every day or Spock ears. “Oh there’s a great story.” She said grinning as she nodded, “Had to work with a couple of detectives from the 34th precinct. We were watching a female suspect and I mean she did look amazing. Anyway we brought her into interrogation where one of the two detectives took her prints and the woman thought she would offer a few kisses around to make the whole process a little more interesting.” Tess explained as she chuckled.
She could still remember the look on the detectives face now. “Anyway, when we were questioning her Andrea the suspect started to make a run for it. We caught her and there was a scuffle. Ended up finding out that her amazing brown hair was a wig and Andrea was actually Andy. Needless to say the detective didnt take it well but we had to send the guy undercover back to the bar as Andrea’s new boyfriend.” Tess knew that Evan could draw his conclusions from there though it was one of those memorable cases.
Tess chuckled as she rolled her eyes and nudged him lightly. “Yeah, I know it would tough to take those crime scene shots but you never know without your knowledge transporter power might not happen.” She said thoughtfully for a moment, “Maybe we need to get you a Kevlar hat to match?” She offered as she spun on her heels teasing him that she was going to head back for it.
