Steven laughed and nodded, “So where would you go if it worked, just click your heels and you would be where?” He asked trying to keep her mind off things as he felt her grasp a hung of his coat. He was glad she did as that way he knew she was there as he could just about see the fire-fighter in front of them between the yellow flash on their jacket and the light on their shoulder. “Oh yeah, I can see those two.” He said motioning to fifty eight, “Being on that all day and just laughing, maybe they didn’t get the memo about it?” He teased as he shrugged in his jacket.
He preferred colder weather but this was like he was baking in an oven, another reason that the paramedics worked outside in the fresh air he thought as next the debris was starting to fall. He was glad they had protective jackets for things like that but still, he wanted to get in and out as fast as possible for the simple reason that there was Kelle to think about too. It was hardly his own nuts choice to go in alone, no his partner was there too and he had promised to get her out in one piece which he was also trusting to the fire-fighters there too.
It felt like he was partially blindfolded as it was similar to an obstacle course to get around with stairs causing him to stumble now and again when his foot didn’t reach the top of them. Difficult to navigate when he could hardly see in front of his face. Steven transferred the stuff he was carrying over to one hand as he reached his free hand behind him. “You’ll be okay Kelle, like I said before we’re both getting out of this. I tend to keep promises like that.” He said firmly as he heard Stephanie’s voice that sounded too weak to him on the worst of days.
“You know Harris if we keep meeting like this people will start to talk and get the wrong impression.” He teased, “How are you doing?” He asked as Gabby started in on them. The reason he had a trust issue with fire-fighters was only proven as he glared right back at the woman. “Yeah yeah, we know the drill Dawson.” He said as he looked toward Kelle for a moment. “You good with getting the oxygen and a line started?” Steven asked her as he knelt down to try and see what the damage was exactly through the smoke that made everything that much more difficult.

“We need a conversation about this.” Shani said decisively as she followed Catherine with a grin. The minute Shani saw the paramedic she winced and tried to hide it, buried from the waist down it was going to be a tough time getting him out she thought. It had been the worst she had seen for a while she thought wondering if she would be able to sleep that night of it nightmares would take over. Then the screaming started as Ben moved something, Shani had seen a lot but it never took away the feeling of being ill when she heard that sort of screaming.
It was different to her children or even an argument scream, it was a screaming sent a shiver down her spine as she nodded to Catherine as Shani grabbed the gauze packs from her bag and started to press and tape them over where she could see Peter was bleeding. Shani never bothered to introduce herself as she simply worked away in the hope that Peter and his stood up date could be a distraction enough from the pain that the man was bound to be feeling. It was like trying to stick a plaster on an open wound as Shani debated what to do other than tape up what she could see and find.
“I’ve got some IV’s that’ll have to do until we can get him to ER.” Shani said as she used her radio to inform the ER in advance they would need blood and a lot of it on standby for Peter. When Catherine stated they needed him out, well they did as he glanced at the fire fighter that answered them back. “Back off just get your job done.” Shani snapped in defence of Catherine, yes at times the woman was known to make a few issues here and there but mostly because they all had a job to do and infighting was not the answer. It would not dig Peter out any faster.
Shani looked to Catherine when Ben asked if Peter could be moved with what he had done. “Shani, I can be ready to stop any bleeding but... depends how bad. Leg splints too but we only have so many hands even with his and if we’re lifting him too.” Shani said quietly so only Catherine would hear, as she was just pointing out things as she saw them but it was Catherine who had to make the decision in the end. If they were lifting Peter then the hands were not there to stop bleeding as it came, if they had hands then it could be just as bad in her eyes as underneath Peter no one knew. The man was in bad enough shape from what they could see.

“Peter it’s okay, just a couple seconds more okay.” “Peter tell me what else hurts”There was that name again, first the female firefighter who landed on him, then the guy named Dean, Ben and now the woman. All calling him the same thing, so maybe Peter was his name. But why did the female firefighter call him Saturn? Was Saturn his name or was it Peter? Ben was moving as quick as he could, Peters chest was now free, it allowed him to breath a little easier, well as easy as several broken ribs would allow. “Did you hit your head?” Peter felt the soft hands touch him again and he could not help but relax some, this time it was his head and neck she was touching, gently pressing something against one of the many cuts he could not see. "It's hurting." he quietly replied, he tried to run through the signs of a concussion but his brain did not want to focus. "Head pain, can't 'member how I got here....room keeps spinning..." Ben finally lifted the hunk of metal that had been stabbing into the upper part of his leg, it freed the limb from where it had been pinned to the floor but opened up a rather large fresh source of bleeding in the process. Peter tried his best to hold in another scream of pain but the noise still managed to get out, using his right hand he reached up and grabbed Catherine's wrist and squeezed as tight as he could, not caring at that moment if it hurt her or not, he just needed something to hold. “See told you you’d feel that leg eventually.” "I hate you right now." Peter rasped, moving his eyes he glared at Ben. The man was only doing his job but good god it hurt like hell. He did not let go of Cats wrist, instead he relaxed his grip a little, he did not want to hurt the woman. Taking a shallow breath he slowly tried to move his legs, his hips protested in pain but after a second his right one moved and he was sure he could feel his toes wiggling. The left one on the other hand did nothing, "I can feel my right, no left." he said relaxing again, letting his fellow medics do what they needed to do. What little energy he had been fighting to hold on to was quickly running out, he could hear people above him talking. The word blood seemed to be a popular subject, then he realized they meant him and his lack of the stuff. Peter once again glanced to where the female firefighter still was, was someone taking care of her he wondered. She had gotten stabbed in the side and needed help. "Guys, she needs help." Peter was struggling to keep his eyes open, all he wanted was a nap, "Ben, make sure she is okay for me." he did not know why, maybe it was the type of guy he was looking out for total strangers, but he wanted to make sure Stephanie was okay, he had to. Peter nodded to himself, satisfied he had said something, leaning his head back to floor again he nodded his head again, "Just make sure she is okay." he added weakly as his grip on Cats arm sudden loosened and Peter passed out. She clung to the Chief as she realised that she had no idea what she had done. Her dad taught her about fire, what to do in case of emergencies and the one rule about not going into a burning building no matter what. Well she had just broken that rule though in her defence it was to get them out though really a fourteen year old versus a fire with two fire fighters that knew their job. Yeah it wasn’t exactly going to end well she thought though none of it mattered because she was outside now. Outside with the one person she trusted and would listen to and the EMT wasn’t that person.
Grace stared at the chief; he was really not going to let the EMT go near her. With that Grace relaxed a little and smiled appreciatively. “How bad are they? Dont lie to me, paramedics aren’t there for nothing.” She asked just wanting to know if she was going to see Stephanie and her dad again or if she was about to become a foster child. When his hands were placed on each of her shoulders she brought her hands to rest on his arms. “Thank you Chief.” She said with tears in her eyes as she went to hug him for a moment until Clark arrived.
Oh she had done it this time though she didnt exactly mean to be a devil child, her family was in danger and she had to do something about it. Did Clark understand? No. Clark glared at the Chief. “Control Chief, all due respect but where was control when that... that vicious animal was biting and kicking my men?” He snapped as Grace clung to the back of Dean’s jacket as she popped her head out to the side of him. “I didn’t mean it Chief, I swear I just want my family back...I’m sorry but I have to get them out they are all I have.” Grace pleaded as she pulled the EMT’s mask from her face as she buried her head into Dean’s side. “I’m sorry I didn’t want to hurt anyone, I just want my mum and dad back.” She sobbed as she hugged Dean though her arms weren’t long enough to go around him so it was more of a clinging hug.

“I’m sorry I didn’t want to hurt anyone, I just want my mum and dad back.”Grace confessed vehemently behind him, her voice quivering with fear. He wasn't about to let Clarke near her. Dean looked at Clarke. "I know you have children, Jeff. What if it was you in that building? How would they react? Put them in this child's place. She only did what any child that loved her parents would do. Now, I am responsible for her now and I will not let anything happen to her. So, I advise you to return to your duty and forget about this incident and have your men focus on the task at hand. You're excused." Clarke looked at him for a moment, uncertain of how to respond but decided to back away. At least for now. The Pollock might out rank him but he would have the last word on this eventually. With a frown he walked away. He'd bide his time for now but he'd have the final word in this eventually. Glad to see Clarke come to his senses Dean turned back to Grace and tenderly put his hand on her shoulder. "I don't know, Gracie. All I do know is they'd want you out here where you're safe. As soon as they come out I'll make sure you are with them. I'll make sure of that. Alright?" He gave her a small grin and continued. "I have a Granddaughter about your age. Her name is Madison. Madison Kowalski and she has blonde hair and blue eyes and is beautiful, just like you." Grace Taylor

Stephanie Harris when fire meets gasoline "Squad Three report," Stephanie could hear Severide over the radio. She hadn’t heard him much on the radio and she hadn’t seen him. His voice was a welcomed vocal. That meant he was alright. Because of everything going on she didn’t realize how that small comfort too was needed. Gabby’s radio was much easier to reach at this point than her own and she weakly moved for it. “Harris reporting” she let the radio fall back down from her hands. Hearing Ben’s voice over the radio was a little comforting. Though the information about Peter… that meant he was not under the rubble? Stephanie couldn’t see in that direction and she was too weak to really try and get a view. “You know Harris if we keep meeting like this people will start to talk and get the wrong impression. How are you doing?” “Wouldn’t be the first time rumours got around 51.” Stephanie retorted albeit very weakly. “Considering there is a tree stuck in my side… I’m fine” she would never admit to being anything other than fine. She took a few breathes. “It hurts to breathe” she added. Every time her side moved she could feel the pain. "Ben, make sure she is okay for me. Just make sure she is okay." Stephanie wanted to fight, she could hear the weakness in Peter’s voice and she began thrashing her head. “PETER!!!!!” she screamed as loud as she could muster though it was weak sounding but audible to the other side of the rubble. Everything in here echoed anyway. More tears as she forced herself to settle simply because it hurt to move. Stephanie hated to cry in front of anyone but right now she simply didn’t care who saw them. She was too weak and too upset as her whole body shivered. Steph RadioSteph No Radio

we've lost it all
Matt was glad that he could get Kelly to agree to the little steps. The Lieutenant on truck had the other Lieutenant’s back. Even if they were sometimes at odds with each other. Hearing Kelly over the radio he cracked a small smile. There was the leader they all knew and counted on.
Matt started to help the guys on the ground with the ladder as he guided it up with hand signals for height. It had to be aligned just so with the ledge or they were never going to get the Harris siblings down on a backboard.
He saw Gabby backing up to give the medics room but he also heard her going into paramedic mode. “Dawson!” he waved her over. Right give her something to do where she wasn’t underfoot. He understood where she was coming from but he couldn’t have her just lingering.
“Med flight needed on standby” Matt decided to call it in. He was done taking chances. If the PIC wanted to get into him later, then that was a discussion they could take up later. That wasn’t really his call but he was making it anyway.

“We need a conversation about this.” “What about the Wizard of Oz? Or the fact this house fits the bill…” Catherine pointed around the room as they made their way to Peter. Though that is where her focus was now, on Peter not about the Wizard of Oz. “I’ve got some IV’s that’ll have to do until we can get him to ER.” Catherine nodded as she heard Shani talking about the IV’s. Good. Well good that they had them, not good that they needed them. Right now they were going to do the best they could. But that was what they always did, just sometimes it was more heart breaking than others. “You need better taste in women Peter, very demanding.” “Back off just get your job done.” Well that took care of that. Shani was always the protective one. That was because Catherine was the quiet and more subdued of the two partners. They balanced each other out. “Think we can move him without too much damage being done?” “I can be ready to stop any bleeding but... depends how bad. Leg splints too but we only have so many hands even with his and if we’re lifting him too.” "It's hurting. Head pain, can't 'member how I got here....room keeps spinning..." “Med flight needed on standby” Everyone was talking so fast. “When that ladder is ready we can get him moved. Bleeding right now is the least of our problems. That can be stopped.” She pointed around them. “Count the hands sweetie” she stated to Shani. It might have been obvious but there was Cruz, Taylor, Capp, and Otis standing around half of them hardly doing much other than helping to move rubble. If it took 4 firefighters to move the last bits then... yeah no they had plenty of hands. That is when Peter went out of consciousness and she heard the scream of the female firefighter. ‘Focus Cat focus’ she started doing everything she could. “Cruz, Taylor. Help us get him on the backboard. Shani be ready to stop the bleeding as they move him.” She grabbed a Collar and secured it around Peter’s neck. No way was she about to risk that with a head and possible neck injury. “On my count… 1… 2… 3” she instructed. Cat did what she could to stabilize his head as they moved him to the backboard. Kelle stayed close to Steven, letting him lead the way, wondering if he was just winging it, or if he had special Superman x-ray vision or something, but it didn't matter, whatever it was, it worked. In short time, at least for them, they had reached their goal, only to have Dawson snap at them. She didn't mind, she understood that even two minutes seemed like an insanely long wait when you were the one doing the waiting!
Kneeling beside Stephanie, Kelle nodded to Steven as he directed her.
“You good with getting the oxygen and a line started?”
"Yeah, sounds good." There was a chunk of wood in the woman's side, that was going to have to be stabilized, and a blood pressure and pulse ox would tell them just how bad it was. "Hang on, Steph, we've got you now," she cajoled, then grinned behind the SBA mask. "You know we're not going to let you get out of work!"
Then she looked toward Gabby. "There a Stokes basket?" They'd have to have a safe way of getting the injured firefighter down, time was of the essence, and while they were waiting, she'd help Steven do what they could.
"Here's some oxygen," she told Stephanie, placing the mask over her face, "you hurt anywhere besides that thing in your side?"

It had to be a call from hell, the sort that would likely give her nightmares for weeks over choices made and what might have happened. When Stephanie reached for her radio she was glad of it, it meant that she was still part of Squad and not letting things go because of her position. No it showed she was aware of what was going on, a good thing in anyone’s head and especially hers. Gabby caught it as Stepahnie let it go and fastened it back onto her belt that went around her.
Heartbreaking, it was all she could think listening to Peter talking and Ben followed by screams and tears. It was different when it was people you never knew, random people who she had no connection with but this time. This time it hurt as she felt her face dampen with a few tears as she wiped them away quickly, no not the time to cry about things she scolded herself silently as she gave the medics room to work.
Gabby nodded to Kelle when she asked about the stokes basket. “Yeah we’ve got one coming.” Gabby answered trying to peer through the smoke to see where it was. She caught sight of the flash of metal as she made a few steps toward the fire-fighter that carried it before snatch it off the guy and placing it down next to Kelle. “There got it.” She said feeling as if everything was taking so long. She would apologise to the fire-fighter later but the minute she considered it she heard Matt’s voice.
For that split second her heart raced thinking there was something wrong until she whirled around on her heels to see him waving her over. She wiped her face again hoping that the smoke covered her tears as she tried to gather herself before she moved over to Matt. “Yeah Lieutenant, what’s needed?” She asked trying to sound overly jolly about things but then there was no way she was going to let emotion get in the way of her work she just needed something to do.

Trying to move the rubble and the metal only seemed to make things worse in Ben’s head. Every move there was more blood and now a fresh source of blood from his leg that the metal had dug into. Was it better to have left the metal where it was, probably not but Peter bleeding to death in the process was hardly part of the plan either he thought praying that the paramedics did something fast to fix that or... no there was no thinking of anything other than Peter being find he told himself as he moved to keep moving things to free him.
Ben laughed in the tired and nervous way. “At least you hate for this too, I think my list with you is growing Peter. Good glaring though, I see where Steph learned it.” He said trying to be funny as with Stephanie the two had hardly gotten on like a house of fire. Still he needed to help and get Peter out no matter how much the man would hate him for it. Ben listened as Peter spoke about feeling one of his legs, it was relief mixed with fear and a hint of joy at the sound. “Listen to the guy without the medical knowledge.” He stated trying to focus on what was going on.
He tried to focus on helping Peter as Cruz joined in the effort when Peter spoke about making sure that Stephanie was okay. “She’ll be okay, you know I’ll make sure of it.” He said when Peter passed out trying not to panic over that fact. No he was just resting Ben told himself as they started to move thing a hell of a lot faster with two of them working on it. The screaming only made it worse, he felt the shiver down his spine the minute Stephanie screamed for her brother. He wanted to tell her they were trying but what good would it do without getting Peter out of there.
Ben grabbed Cruz as soon as Catherine spoke, with the back board ready to move under Peter they somehow managed to get him on the back board as Ben made way for Shani who seemed to go into overdrive in pressing gauze here and there while shoving his hands places and barking at him to keep pressure on it while she taped things in place.
Once Shani finished rearranging Ben’s hands he went to grab the sides of the board as he motioned for Cruz to grab the other side. “Ready to move him guys?” He said not wanting to take too long as the hospital was the best place for Peter and not in a smoking building.

Nothing stopped him, it was all he could do to see the flash of fluorescent on the fire-fighters coat in front of him but stopping was never going to be something he would do. Steven nodded and smiled a little as Kelle got to work, had to be the best partner in the world he thought as he laughed when she spoke about getting out of work. “You heard the lady.” He added. Things were certainly interesting he thought as he was trying to treat a patient through thick smoke, there was always the first time for everything.
Would you catch a surgeon operating with a blindfold, no but give a medic a burning building and they were more than happy to give it all a go. This call would go down in his book of calls not to repeat he thought to himself as he got to work. Steven grinned at Stephanie’s retort. “See you’re learning things Harris.” He replied nodded to her comment about the tree stuck in her side. Well there was never going to be a dull moment in the fire house that was for sure.
A tree, a truck, a shooting. Maybe fire house fifty one was not the safest place to work but he would never have swapped it for anything else. It made the day interesting at least and when was the last time that the medics managed to get into a burning building? It was a while ago. “Yeah, that happens when you chose to fall onto a tree you know. Not the brightest idea Harris.” He said as he tried to stabilise the stick that was in her side. If it got knocked or pushed further in then things would get a lot worse very fast and that was something he wanted to avoid if at all possible.
Steven glanced toward Dawson who had the stokes basket and then went off at the sound of her name. He waited to see what Stephanie would answer to Kelle before he glanced toward Kelle as he motioned to the basket. At least they had that so far he thought to himself, “Ready to get us all out?” He asked a little quietly as he hardly wanted Stephanie to start getting upset if Peter was having to stay a little longer than they might.

Shani thought about their conversation before nodded, “I say conversation and wine because this house is something else. Wizards or no wizards.” If there was ever a fire house that fitted the Wizard of Oz, strangely enough it did and while she tried to wrap her head around that she felt that a conversation and wine or vodka or something much stronger than coffee was in order to discuss it and put the world to rights once again. That had to wait until they were all out of there and that things did not go sideways on them.
If there was one thing Shani would do it was protect her partner, it extended to patients at times and fire house staff too but at the end of the day Catherine was the one person she would go above and beyond for. The woman was subdued and sometimes the brick approach was needed to even the scales before people got a little too nippy. When Peter moved his leg Shani was quick to jump in with pressing wound dressing against the large flesh wound that had appeared. The screaming and voices from every direction had her hands working a lot faster than her brain as they seemed to know what to do a lot faster.
Shani heard something about a med flight needed, faster than an ambulance would be which was a smart move. When Catherine spoke about counting the hands Shani glanced up from Peter for the first time in a while to see the others standing around doing little other than watching them. “We’ve got hands.” She stated as she tossed them all packets of dressings as she levelled strict instructions not to open them until they had a place to actually use them. No point in contaminating everything before it was useful she thought.
When Peter lost consciousness and Stephanie started to scream it was Cat’s voice that brought her back to the proceedings. Cruz and Taylor helped move Peter as she weaved her way in and around them to stop any bleeding that she could see. It was a little like playing twister but this was far more intricate and there was a lot less to lose playing that at home other than her pride or dignity whichever came first.

Grace had no idea what to do, she wanted out of there but didnt want to leave Stephanie and her dad. Clark scared her though, she was trying to explain why she did what she did but the man seemed to have none of it as she listened to what Dean said to him. Grace knew what she had done was wrong and that in doing what she did it put other people at risk. Then they needed to understand that it was her family in there, her only family and that mattered to her more than her own life.
When Clarke left Grace felt herself let go of a breath she had no idea she was holding until she struggled to catch her breath again for a moment. "That guy scares me, how can he be a fire fighter if he's scary?" Grace asked not liking Clarke at all not only for trying to keep her out of the building in the first place but for yelling at her after she tried to get her family back.
Grace stared at the Chief with tears in her eyes a she nodded, “Thank you, I just want them back Chief.” She sobbed as she held onto Dean again, when they came out that was good enough for her she thought as she glanced up at Dean again. “You’ve got to come along too. I’m not leaving you here either.” She stated deciding to adopt her dads rules of everyone goes if one does.
Grace smiled and blushed when he said she was beautiful. “Madison sounds like a beautiful girl too. What school does she go to?” Grace asked wondering if she knew her from school or it was case of different schools. “She’s lucky to have you as her granddad.” Grace stated with a smile as she glanced at the crumbling building. “I’ve only got my dad and then I have Stephanie too but they are the only two people in the world that are my family. I cant lose them.” She said not letting go of Dean for any reason.

Sometimes on the rare occasional, being apart of a flight crew for an emergency helicopter could be a little boring..a little. Tonight was one such night. So after checking..and rechecking everything, the crew for Medevac Delta Thirty−Seven (the air unit that was usually directly responsible for taking people from scenes to Chicago Med.) was settling down for a nice game of UNO.
"I'm telling you, its been way to qui-"
"Mark, if you say it again I am going to throw something at you." Bryan looked up from his cards and sent a glare to the nurse, Mark just shrugged and went back to his hand, "He is right." Samantha added quietly, Bryan looked at his co-pilot/second if needed paramedic, out of the corner of his eye, always the peace maker she was. The small crew settled back into their game again.
"Mark, draw two."
"Uno."
"You can't call UNO you just drew two cards."
"Oh wait...un-UNO."
Before anyone else could make a remark about the mistake Bryans radio came to life. "Medevac Delta Thirty−Seven standby for incoming call." the radio quickly cut off. Sam and Mark got up and started grabbing their gear so they would be ready when the actual call came in, Bryan followed moments later, better to warm the engines up now vs later.
Almost twenty minutes later, as he was going over the last of his preflight, a voice came thru his headset"This is Elijah." he already knew it would most likely be a dispatcher on the other end of the line, he did not expect it to be the head dispatcher. "We have a multi-alarm structure fire with two casualties, they've already radio'd ahead for the E.R to start prepping for a blood transfusion, I don't know if it is for one or both." Elijah paused for a brief moment, he knew he was supposed to use proper codes but he was also in a rush and needed to properly explain what was going on. "Injuries?" Bryan asked, if anything he'd be able to give Sam and Mark a heads up, "Head trauma, broken bones...it sounds like its a crush injury with a few more things tossed in. Either way, its one of us and I want you ready to take off as soon as I get confirmation from the tower." So much for a quiet night, the last thing Bryan had expected to come up was someone from EMS needing a lift. "Tower should be giving you clearance here shortly..." Elijah added, the radio went quiet soon after.
Mark glanced to the side to see Sam also talking to someone in her own headset, a few seconds passed and she nodded and gave Mark a thumbs up. They were clear to go. "Medevac Delta Thirty−Seven, you have clearance and Chicago Med is standing by." The small flight crew had their job, now it was time to go do it. "Time to give someone a ride in the fastest taxi in the city!" Mark replied as he took his seat.
Three minutes later Medevac Delta Thirty-Seven was in the air and heading towards their destination.
