If there was one thing Aria didn’t like, it was school projects. They always required more time than regular homework, and usually counted more. It wasn’t like she could ignore them though. Her adoptive parents were always ensuring she was on top of her homework and assignments.
This particular assignment, Aria wish she could avoid. Her English teacher wanted them to write an essay about their family, and create a family tree to go with it. Aria still considered family a complicated topic. She had her biological parents, who had raised her for the first thirteen years of her life. After that, there had been a few foster families that helped raise her until Evan and Vanessa stepped in.
Her adoptive parents were definitely her family, Aria knew that much. And she knew she wanted to include them in the family tree, even if they weren’t related by blood. But Aria wanted to make sure she included her biological parents too because they were still important to her. Aria had already compiled a few photos of herself and her parents when she was younger, photos that she hadn’t looked at in forever.
Sitting on the couch, Aria sifted through some of the photo albums Evan and Vanessa had. She had gotten permission from Vanessa to look through them, after explaining she needed a few for a school assignment. As she looked through them, Aria noticed a photo of Vanessa and Jerry when Vanessa was younger. She had seen him in a few of the wedding photos that she had found, and had assumed that he had been some sort of a family friend. To see him in photos with a young Vanessa made Aria second guess herself though.
Heaving a sigh as she got up from the couch, Aria reached for the photo album and placed it in the box with the ones she had from her biological parents before leaving the living room in search of her adoptive mother. Aria had questions, and the best person to answer them right now would be Vanessa. “Vanessa?” Aria called out as she headed towards her office. The teen knew that she would probably find her adoptive mother there.
“Mom? You here?” She called again as she got closer to the office. Aria had been switching between calling her adoptive parents their respective names and mom and dad a lot more lately. Sometimes she noticed, and other times she didn’t.
Shifting the box to one hand so she could knock with the other, Aria called out softly once more “Mom...Vanessa, can I come in?” Shaking her head to try to clear her embarrassment, Aria opened the door and stepped into the office.
“I was looking through the photo albums for my assignment, and I noticed something” she explained, as she set the box down and took Vanessa’s photo album out. “There’s this guy, and at first I thought he was just a family friend or a friend of yours from college since he’s in your wedding photos”
“But then I noticed that he’s in your childhood photos too” Aria continued as she flipped to a page that had some photos of Vanessa and Jerry from when her adoptive mother was younger. “Is he like a friend of your parents or your godfather?”
There was so much about Evan and Vanessa that Aria was still learning about, and that included their families. It was probably one of the only bright sides about having this family tree project. “I’m supposed to be creating a family tree and I kind of want to add more people then just me, my biological parents, you and Evan, and my brother and sisters” Aria admitted. It was why she was hoping Jerry was related to them in some way, that way she could include him.
