[attr="class","Gracener"] [attr="class","Gracener1"] [attr="class","Graceback"] [attr="class","Gracenert"]Grace had her few bags. She’d had a long discussion with her roommate Kelsey about terminating her lease. There were a lot of things factoring into her decision and Grace had spent some time coming to terms with the fact her brother was alive. It had taken her a bit to cope with the fact that Nate was alive; but she knew that she hadn’t made things easy on him. In fact, she’d been selfish and making things easier on herself, drowning herself in a world of alcohol. Reality had hit her like a brick. She’d not had a drink in over a week; it was just the beginning of things. But did Nate even know how to adjust back to a normal life style? Getting her few bags out of the back of the taxi and paying the taxi driver, she set them where she could get to them but they weren’t weighing her down. Grace looked the door up and down. This decision wasn’t easy for her; but her brother needed her and someone had to be stubborn. Something Grace wasn’t always good at; but when she cared about someone or really wanted something she occasionally would get a stubborn streak. Balling up a fist and knocking on his door, she exhaled a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding. This would have been so much easier if she could have had a drink to take the edge off. But she’d spent so many nights with the bottle trying to make things better. It got her fragile relationship with her brother and her nowhere. Grace waited for someone to come to the door. She looked more refreshed than the last time she’d seen Nate but it wasn’t hard to tell she was still on the mend. Oh the things that she needed to tell Nate and things she wanted to take back from that night in the parking lot. Soccer was her passion but it wasn’t enough to keep the bills paid. She’d picked up an administrative assistant job at one of the local companies. Sure it didn’t pay brilliant but it was livable. She’d be able to help with expenses better than she had with her teammate. She’d also reached out to a few friends about places that Nate could find work with his unique skill set. [attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] The week following Nate's run-in with Grace in the parking lot had given him plenty of time to think and, in the process, he'd come up with plenty of answers. The kind that told him his fanciful notions of returning home had been incredibly foolish. Yes, he'd considered staying here long-term and purchasing his own place, but unable to even reach out and talk to family called that very decision into question. So, he'd given up on trying to find somewhere to buy, and just resigned himself to retreating indoors at the rental property. On the plus side, Nate had enough time to nurse a few beers and catch a few more games on TV. The loud knock, which echoed throughout the house, took Nate by surprise and he frowned. He couldn't imagine who might be on the other side of the door: he didn't get company coming to visit him. Pretty much the only people he knew in Chicago were Jia and Grace, but he was pretty sure neither one of them wanted to see his face, not after the way things had gone down. It wasn't like he wasn't about to go out for drinks any time soon. After a minute, Nate set his beer down on the counter, and decided to take a look. Nate opened the door and took a step back. The face staring back at him was Grace's. Recovering from the momentary shock, his features hardened into an impassive stare. What made her think she could just show up on his doorstep and… with bags in tow? She might be his sister, but that didn't entitle her to… whatever she thought this was. He held out his hand, resting his palm against the doorframe to bar her path. "What do you want, Grace?"Gracelyn Cordova [attr="class","Nateright2"] |

[attr="class","Gracener"] [attr="class","Gracener1"] [attr="class","Graceback"] [attr="class","Gracenert"]When Nate answered the door, Grace knew that coming by on her way to the hotel had been a mistake. Looking over her shoulder, she made sure that she had somewhere to run if she wanted it. Something she’d been doing her whole life; running away from everything. After her last conversation with Nate she’d thought they’d agreed to fix the whole distance they’d put between themselves in the last few weeks. That was one of the things that told Grace that Nate needed help. Spanish lyrics flooded their conversation, more comfortable with it than she was with English. “I want nothing.” Her hand reached out with a piece of paper. “I was on my way to the hotel. You mentioned wanting to settle. I reached out to a friend.” She backed up quickly once she relinquished the paper. Grace couldn’t lose her brother; not again. Picking her bag up, she shuffled it back on her shoulder and turned around to leave, it didn’t take rocket science to figure out that Nate didn’t really want her here. Her car was already at the hotel with a few boxes, she’d taken a taxi because she’d not bothered yet to unload. Slipping out her phone she felt rather stupid for waving the other driver off. Though she took a few seconds to grip the phone without actually entering any information into the taxi app. Whirling around she watched her brother from a distance. “What I don’t want is to lose you again.” She could hear the self doubt in her head. ‘It’s too late for that.’His entire demeanor when she’d walked up to that door. She didn’t even want to approach the door again, so she stood on the walkway trying to figure out what she wanted to do. Nate needed her and now she wanted to run all over again. [attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] No one enjoyed getting rebuked only to have the person who shunned you show up on your doorstep looking like they wanted your help. For exactly that reason, of all the people who could have shown up, Grace was the hardest to face. She might be his sister, but that didn't entitle her to special privileges. Grace could lay in the bed she'd made... just like everyone else. Nate looked down at the piece of paper she'd thrust into his hand, eyeing it suspiciously. It seemed an odd choice to bring this by -- she could have left a voicemail on his cellphone. Considering Grace didn't seem keen to come visit before now, it might have made more sense. Then she wouldn't have to see his face. Very little was written down -- just a name and phone number he didn't recognize. He shrugged. There were probably some strings attached she hadn't mentioned yet. As soon as Grace slipped into Spanish, Nate followed suit. He stared in open disbelief as he spoke. The hypocrisy, after all, was astounding. Grace said one thing, but presented a very different picture. She didn't want to lose him again, but where had she been since his return? "You made your feelings pretty clear. I'll be reporting back to duty in a couple of days."Gracelyn Cordova [attr="class","Nateright2"] |

[attr="class","Gracener"] [attr="class","Gracener1"] [attr="class","Graceback"] [attr="class","Gracenert"]Grace could tell that Nate had been drinking. But she didn’t have any room to talk, and this was already hard enough for the both of them. She could have come up with any number of reasons why she hadn’t left a voicemail but they would all have been lies. She needed time and space and thought he had too. She made the wrong decision there clearly and was mentally berating herself as she stood there in the walkway. “Please Nate… Don’t go… Please don’t...” Leaving her things on the walkway, she took a few steps towards him. She said the same thing before he’d left years ago. If it hadn’t changed anything then; what did she really think it was going to change now. Grace’s biggest mistake had been showing how much seeing him again hurt. She refused to cry again. When they were younger, she knew Nate could read her face like a book. The same was probably true now. Despite years of not seeing each other, she’d not changed in those regards. Lying to Nate had never been possible. She wanted to reach out and hug him; but she was afraid of it just coming back to hurt her. [attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] The last thing Nate needed was more hypocritical behavior from his sister. Grace could welcome him back in a stadium parking lot, then spend the next several weeks pretending he didn't exist, but there would be ramifications. For Nate, that mean cutting something toxic out of his life. Under the circumstances, it was the best decision for him. That seemed to be the only thing members of this family cared about -- making decisions focused solely on yourself. Well, Nate could make those decisions too. "It's too late for that. Goodbye, Grace."His words were meant to sound permanent. Final. Because they were. Continued drinking would make everything better. He could numb whatever remaining pain he felt. Grace had no place to talk, since she'd taken up heavier drinking herself, although that hadn't stopped her so far. Nate took a step back, shaking his head. The only lifestyle he could really trust, at least away from the brotherhood of work, was a solitary one. Nate started to close the door. He had nothing else to say. "Just... goodbye."Nate locked the door behind him. Some things were better left in the past. He would move forward without his family. He debated reaching out to one of his old squad mates, but it was better, he supposed, not to show weakness. Instead, he ended up back in the kitchen, and grabbed another beer. [attr="class","Gracener"] [attr="class","Gracener1"] [attr="class","Graceback"] [attr="class","Gracenert"] To say that Grace wasn’t put off by the door slamming on her face, would be wrong. It tore her apart inside. She’d lost her brother once and she wasn’t about to let him go down the same road she’d just gone down. When she got home she cried til there were no more tears left. It was hard not to make that walk to the corner store and drown in a bottle of alcohol for the night. What was she supposed to say to Nate? Picking her face out of the tear stained pillow she grabbed a pen and paper beginning to write. Nate,
Before you throw this out, please at least read this all the way through. Coming to your house wasn’t for me, it was for you. I’d just checked out of a rehab facility for my drinking, and was on my way to a hotel. You deserved better than what I could be for you when we exchanged greetings in the parking lot. I started drinking when I’d lost you. It got out of control. We’ve gone through some of the hardest parts of life, alone. That’s not how it’s supposed to be.
You gave up your family to make things better for everyone. Don’t follow in my footsteps. You will always have me in your corner, whether you stay or walk away. That’s what siblings are for.
GraceSealing up the letter she stamped it and set it in the outgoing tray for mail, though she put no return address. It would get to her brother’s house in a few days. The only date would be the post mark in the morning mail. Though she cried herself to sleep knowing that no one could see the weakest parts of her. [attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] The next week and a half passed by -- mostly uneventfully. He'd called the number Grace had provided him, spoke to a former Delta Operator in Cameron Pierce, and accepted the job. It would be safer work, though Nate still wasn't convinced he wanted to stay in Chicago. He wasn't sure what he wanted. Nate flipped through the mail -- assorted credit cards and flyers -- except for one envelope addressed from Grace. His sister, apparently, maintained the same persistent Cordova streak. He debated tossing the unopened letter directly into the trash. He wasn't interested in reading the same hypocrisy he'd been subject to just a few days ago. Sighing, he set the beer aside -- he'd been trying to go lighter on the alcohol since his conversation with Jia -- but he was probably going to need another bottle, if he went through with this. Nate settled into the nearby recliner, bracing for the worst, as he opened the envelope and began to read. Her words, surprisingly, seemed sincere. There was even some discoloration on the paper -- tears? As Nate finished reading, he closed his eyes and considered. If the letter is what it seemed, was he really ready to talk to her? Jia kept pushing him towards it, but Nate pushed back, remaining unconvinced. All the battlefields he'd fought on, this would be the one to give him trouble. Damn it, Grace, Nate growled. After all this time, she still knew how to tug on his emotions. He abandoned the recliner. The next two hours were spent pacing the length of the living room. He stopped, finally, to examine the envelope. There was no return address -- no way to know where Grace was staying. His hand hesitated near the phone. He didn't even know if the telephone number he had for her was still good, but it was the only thing he had. Nate picked up the phone and dialed. Gracelyn Cordova [attr="class","Nateright2"] |

[attr="class","Gracener"] [attr="class","Gracener1"] [attr="class","Graceback"] [attr="class","Gracenert"]Grace didn’t need Nate to know where she was staying. If he found out she was at some extended stay hotel until she found a place, she was pretty sure he friend Kelsey wouldn’t be around to explain why the two had parted ways. The team was leaving for a road trip and Grace had decided to take personal time and stay behind. Her coach knew what was going on but Nate needed her more right now. Though she was just kidding herself, he’d made things perfectly clear. Watching her team play on the television was hardly the same thing as being on the field but they were the closest people to her, and she was going to support them. Her phone rang and she didn’t both to read the caller id before picking it up. Watching the other team score a goal. “Damn it Reyes, you should have had that!” She was regretting not going on this road trip for the teams sake if that is how Reyes was going to fill in for her. As far as fans knew, Grace was out with an injury until further notice. No one was releasing any true details as to what put her on the disabled list. “Hello” It was clear she had no idea who was on the phone or what it was about. She muted the game and watched the closed captions scrolling along the screen. Maybe it would be a sales call she could hang up on and take her frustrations of seeing her team behind on the scoreboard and being able to do nothing about it. [attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] As soon as Grace answered the phone -- it was definitely her voice on the other end of the line -- Nate froze and forget everything he wanted to say. He'd practiced for a reason. He didn't want to say something that could get misinterpreted but, at the same time, he couldn't just say nothing. Opting for a hopefully safe opening, but could even prove to be just as disastrous as their initial conversation, Nate began by dipping his foot into the water. "Grace. I got your letter."The only problem was Nate didn't know whether to keep talking or wait for Grace to say something. In the military, bullets solved most of his problems -- a strategy that wouldn't really pay off here. Talking, quite often, was reserved for discussing shop. After waiting for a moment, although it felt more like an eternity, Nate continued. "You still want to talk?"This is the part Nate dreaded most. Despite Grace reaching out, maybe she didn't want to talk now. She could have changed her mind since then. Nate braced himself for the worst -- you prepared for every possible outcome, including the ones where things went horribly wrong. Because, especially in the field, a mission could go bad fast. It was all too natural to apply his training here. Gracelyn Cordova [attr="class","Nateright2"] |
