Did fifty one really need a new captain? It was the question buzzing in his head since he found out there was one coming in. Steven was hardly against the idea but at least this Captain was on the fire-fighter side because he hardly wanted to deal with a paramedic. It was his whole reason for being in that day, the meet and greet. Happy and smiley and more happy. Steven now realised why he had ended up with a shift swap from the Israeli nut case medic. Happy and smiley, yeah who out of the whole house picked those two to take this shift?
Steven was still debating if he wanted to just lock himself inside the ambulance and wait out the inevitable meet and greet situation. He was sat in his medic’s uniform, flicking through the sports pages of yesterday’s paper. He had been in shift a few hours already and it was a slower day, not to say his partner for the day had been sent home sick. Just his luck that he now had to wait for a replacement so he was grounded until further notice. It was just lucky there were not too many calls which was disappointing given it meant he had to be in the house waiting for the Captain to arrive. Steven almost felt like using the quiet word if meant he could speed up a little but then it not only affected him.
The entire house would be thrown for a loop and the last thing on a welcome day, would be a major disaster. Even if it saved him from having to meet this person. Steven sat back in the chair at the table in the kitchen area focusing in on the latest sports results. A day late but then between work and getting organised for a baby, it was tough to find time just to sit down and appreciate the results of a basketball game. The ironic thing was he had little to no interest in it beyond something to read.
Today was going to be a long day he thought as he waited for the arrival of their new team member. All he could hope for was that they were nice, understanding and could cope with a lot. Fifty One was a fun place to be, dramatic but fun and he wondered how much the Captain had heard about previous endeavours undertaken by the members of the house. He could only hope they had been given the glossy version as he waited to smile, shake a hand and go about the day as normal.

[attr="class","Artiner"] [attr="class","Artiner1"] [attr="class","Artiback"] [attr="class","Artinert"]Being back in Chicago was... difficult. When Artemis had learned the truth about what happened to Julie... her whole world had shattered. They'd had it arranged for her rings to be sent back to Steven. It had torn her up on the inside. The marshals had encouraged her to move on with her life to start dating again; but she never had. She'd thrown herself at her work and very successfully. Each fire, each car crash had her reliving things but if it could help someone else. Finally she had enough and she'd transferred to Chicago. Go to house fifty-one they said. Yeah, well Chicago was a place of so many wonderful memories but ones that made her want to leave. She'd left witness protection. Against the orders of the US Marshall service but so be it. Today she had to smile at these people and get to know them. Coming around the corner she caught sight of Steven. He worked here? The color all but drained from her face. So much for keeping herself together. That's when she heard herself being introduced. Though she tried to turn the other way. Anxiety was trying to get the best of her. She quickly apologized to the room before heading towards the lockers. What the hell was she supposed to say to Steven? Stopping just shy of the locker room she laid her head against the stone wall. Great example for a first day Captain. Her internal chiding was sometimes her own pep talks. She'd perhaps gone a little crazy over the last few decades. Steven dragged his fingers over the rings that hung on a small silver chair around his neck, they rarely left him and when they did, he felt lost without them. He spent half a call at times telling someone not to go back for a treasured belonging; ‘it could all be replaced’ he would say. ‘Nothing is worth your life’. He was hardly sure what he would do if he lost the rings, yes he had given one on loan to Stephanie to get by a nurses station but he had it back soon after. It had done some good for someone in his eyes.
He could still remember the cop that told him that it was best if he never saw her, no point in going to the hospital and no open casket. Just these are her rings, we thought you would like them conversation that followed the worst news a teenager could get. Even now knowing that life was short, Steven had considered asking Alyssa to marry him, with the baby and all it had crossed his mind several times but those rings around his neck. It was too much to part with them as he closed his eyes for a moment, a new ring for Alyssa of course but he still had no idea if that was a step too far. He had been married once and it ended, it ended in death and so far he was things were going well without that he reasoned to himself.
He was still sat on the chair when he felt the elbow in his side from Ben, signalling the approach of the new captain. Sliding form his seat and standing, smiling a little too much as he saw the new female captain. He felt like he had been hit by a truck as he slid back into the seat, hearing the apology to the room. Steven could barely look her way. There might have been twenty years gone by but Steven knew her face, he knew her as he gulped not sure what to say or if he could even move. Hearing some sarcastic comment from Taylor about his affect on people Steven glared as he shoved himself from his seat heading toward the lockers.
His legs felt weak as he jogged around the corner seeing Julie there, her head against the stone wall. He had thought he had seen something, a passing similarity that he could write off to a ghost or such. The more he stared the more he saw as he felt his legs turn to jelly and his heartbeat quicken. “Julie? Julie Hudson.” He questioned in low almost whispered tone though there was no need for that. It was her. He stopped moving a few feet from her as he laughed before slapping a hand over his mouth. "You're alive!" He mumbled barely able to breathe, wondering if today was the day he had lost it. This was far from funny but he could barely contain a laugh, he felt entirely numb but laughing seemed to be the one thing he could do without much effort.

[attr="class","Artiner"] [attr="class","Artiner1"] [attr="class","Artiback"] [attr="class","Artinert"]Hearing Steven use her old name she hadn’t been ready to look him up yet. Sure she’d left Alaska back home for Chicago because of psychotic dates she’d tried to go one to move on. Yeah no. She knew better than anyone that Steven wouldn’t let anyone within eye sight of her if she so much as hinted they were up to no good. “Once upon a time. It’s Artemis.” She corrected only her first name; but not her last name. Technically, it was Buchanan as far as witness protection was concerned but since she’d come out of that, she’d dropped the whole Buchanan front. But Artemis was just something she was used to now. “I… I didn’t want to leave…” She admitted. Though she could barely find her words. “I… I had to… the accident… I… I was scared. I thought they would let you come too. I didn’t know what to do.” She had been nineteen and scared and waking up to a new identity without much of a memory. “I woke up and you weren’t there. I was gonna run but they told me that if I came back here that you were going to be in danger too. So I waited but I'm on the run and I didn't know where else to go..” She put her arms around Steven’s neck and just hugged him tight. The scent of Alyssa’s perfume made Artemis stop in her tracks as she slowly let go. She was interfering with something wasn’t she? Though she had no idea what to say as she froze. Though the claxon alarm pulled her out of her worst fears. The address that was rambled off was a fire. A tree had fallen on the house due to storm damage. The neighbors thought that someone might still be inside. The truck’s Captain grabbed her gear and was moving. If this was storm damage there was no telling what else they would find. Though the address meant nothing to her. It was just another address; but to her those addresses were people. Not numbers. Once upon a time... yes he felt a little like that. Once upon a time there was a woman he loved that had been killed in a car accident, a women he still loved even though for the last twenty some years he thought was lost now stood within feet of him. “Artemis. It suits you.” He said, it suited her far better than Julie though he knew Julie. Artemis was a new name for a person he had been ready to share everything with a person who, was dead until she was now Captain. His dead wife was Captain, he had to have been drugged he figured or it was a dream.
Steven stood and listened to the explanation, the not wanting to leave, the had to leave and then him going too? He officially had no idea what she was talking about, at nineteen he knew his wife was dead, a cop told him so. They sat him down and told him, how, where, when and why. “I was told you were dead.” He stated, struggling to find the right words for you’re dead to sound any better. “Run from what? What danger Jul...Artemis?” He asked trying to keep at least one name straight in his head. “On the run from what?” Steven asked feeling her arm around his neck, there was no hesitation as he hugged her tightly to him.
Only realising something was wrong when she slowly let go. “I’d have protected you, you’re always welcome why would you even think of going anywhere else?” The questioned popped into his head as the alarm rang out. He stood there frozen for a moment, a call, right now? Seriously? He was about to grumble about it when he heard the address. The address that sent his face pale and his heart pointing, a fallen tree no Alyssa could be at his place. He could barely breathe as his feet seemed to know better than his mind for a moment.
“It’s her.” Steven said passing the familiar faces as he glanced at Artemis. “It’s her address... Alyssa. The baby, the tree, it’s her.” He could barely say her name as he threw himself into the driver’s seat of the ambulance. It was happening again, his girlfriend was in trouble. He was telling his dead now alive wife about the pregnant girlfriend he had, without actually having that conversation. He would wake up and the world would be fine, he would come to his senses and it would all be a nightmare. Alyssa would be safe with the baby at home, work would be standing there waiting for him to get in and it would just be the tired mind of a paramedic.
Yeah right. The feeling of auto pilot kicking in while Steven drove, a little blindly given the sound of horns behind him but his partner was there yelling and directing traffic for them as best a screaming passenger could. Combined with hand gestures and on your left and right could work for speed and lights.

[attr="class","Artiner"] [attr="class","Artiner1"] [attr="class","Artiback"] [attr="class","Artinert"]At least it was a conversation, there was a lot to be said for being gone for decades. He could have ranted and raved at her, gotten in her face or any number of things. So that was a decent start she guessed. It wasn’t like she asked to be stationed at the same place as her husband. Well if that was legally something that was still a thing. A confusing matter for a lawyer at a much later time but first they had a lot to figure out before getting to that point. Artemis looked towards Steven and shook her head. Standing here in a hug, in his arms it made everything melt away. “Someone was targeting me. A whole group of someone’s. I didn’t want you to get mixed up in it. I don’t even know how I got mixed up in things." She stared at the ground but she gave him the answers he was looking for. “They faked my death before I even knew I was supposedly dead.” Sighing she just hugged him tighter. “I know you would have. Steven I never doubted that for a minute. It wasn’t in my hands.” That’s when Steven started talking cryptically. Who was Alyssa? What baby? Artemis wasn’t sure what to say when he got into the ambulance faster than she could move (and she wasn’t dawdling). Climbing up into the fire truck, she had no idea what Steven was on about but something was off. The engine pulled in off to the side of the ambulance and Artemis got out assessing the situation. She was trained as a paramedic but was also the first to find Alyssa. “Over here!” Artemis called loudly. Checking to see if the blonde was still alive, she was also trying to figure out how to get the tree off. “She’s still breathing, but her pulse is weak.” She turned to Alyssa and tried to calm her down. “The baby… kicking hard. I can’t….” Alyssa wasn’t making complete sentences and was somewhat delirious. Artemis wasn’t sure what to make of things. Steven probably had more answers than Artemis did but would he be able to keep himself together. Artemis could tell that by the looks of things Alyssa would be lucky to make it out. Though she wasn’t going to look at things like that. There were days she hated her job. Screaming and ranting about something he was trying to process might have worked last shift, ten weeks ago or ten years ago but right then she was back within touching distance. The wife he held onto for years, the one that no one else ever measured up to and the wife whose rings he still had around his neck. Did he qualify for the crazy train; it was possible but yelling at his wife beyond holding a beer and screaming at the sky in the back yard when he was alone. He could yell later though the tree squirrels likely would disapprove.
Holding her tightly in his arms it felt like a dream, a plausible one given the whole new Captain aspect but then it was hardly the first work dream he had. “I don’t care what I got mixed up in so long as it was with you.” Steven said feeling the sting of emotion behind those words, he would never have batted an eye at what he got involved in for her. A fake death, well it seemed pretty real from his end of things, everything seemed to be same as his father. The cops at the door, the better not see anything, the sorry faces and the no clue of how to go on after that.
Things happened in a blur after that, the call, the address and the million things that ran through his head until he threw himself out of the ambulance glancing over the scene as he went to grab the bags from the back of the ambulance. In this case he had no care who his partner was for the day, he wanted people he trusted when he heard Artemis call out he had found her. Steven ran over to the two of them, his dead wife had just found his girlfriend. There had to be an irony in that or just a serious haze of karma.
“Her name is Alyssa.” Steven stated calmly as he crouched down next to Alyssa running his hand against her cheek. “You’re okay, the baby’s okay just relax and I promise we’ll get you out.” He said softly breaking the rule about making promises. “Just like the beach that day, it’s just a tree this time. We’ll get you out.” He said smiling as he could feel his hands shaking obviously as they set about working over Alyssa, almost in an automatic way. “Female, 40s, pregnant almost to term... five foot five inches.” He reeled off almost parrot fashion as he glanced over to Artemis. “My girlfriend.”
Steven hoped it said about all he needed to, telling his dead wife he had a girlfriend who was stuck under a tree, also pregnant with their child. Reality was cold and to say he had seen worse situations, his promise looked like it was going to need a lot of luck to be kept as he kept his smile in an attempt to reassure Alyssa. Steven knew he could be screamed at later for working on her but right now, he was trying to do his job and there were few others who he trusted enough to let them close to either Alyssa or Artemis.

[attr="class","Artiner"] [attr="class","Artiner1"] [attr="class","Artiback"] [attr="class","Artinert"]Alyssa felt her body trembling beneath her as she could hardly get words out. “Don’t make promises Steven. Just keep our little girl safe. You make sure she’s okay.” Alyssa wasn’t saying much to Artemis as she could barely make out much of anything right now. She knew she’d lost a lot of blood. “We need need to get this tree moved and now.” That last thing they needed to do was play the waiting game. Artemis didn’t leave but she did start barking orders into the radio without so much as a second thought. Distancing herself from the situation, she knew she had to for everyone’s sake if they had any chance of saving anyone. Artemis started to move what she could off Alyssa what wouldn’t cause the tree to shift any. Smaller branches and stuff that was in their way. Artemis had enough experience to know that this wasn’t looking like a good outcome for Alyssa but that there was still a chance they could save her a very small chance but there was a chance. The baby on the other hand, had a much higher chance of being okay. The way Alyssa was laying the tree was crushing her lungs and ribcage. As the tree shifted off, Artemis eased Alyssa onto the stretcher. “Let’s go and now.” She grabbed a few of the guys off the truck, one to drive and one more to help her in the back. She wouldn’t stop Steven from helping where he could but she wasn’t going to let him take lead on this. Not in a million years. But she was going to keep eyes on him. With Alyssa going in and out of consciousness, Artemis had two priorities. One was they were going to deliver this baby. Two was to try and save Alyssa. This was more for doctors to handle but they also had to be ready if something happened on the way to the hospital. A very real possibility. This was a really bad day to show back up at the station. A really bad day. Steven nodded to Alyssa, “I will keep you both safe, I don’t make promises I can’t keep. You know that.” He said smiling trying to at least keep it together enough that he could attempt to keep that one promise. It was bad, he knew it and if he was honest with himself he might have been able to admit how bad but that had never been his style. It was just like the plane situation, Alyssa could have drowned that day but she survived, just like she could survive a pesky tree.
His brain was awash with thoughts and feelings, his wife or first wife or really dead wife was right there with his girlfriend and the baby they were having. At least someone had a handle on things and despite having never known if Julie or Artemis was any good at her job, he had to trust that she was sorting things out right then. She was the only one with a brain to do it because Steven was seriously lacking in thought process beyond his job. Even that was mostly muscle memory or something similar.
Steven knew what to do, what order it went. Where the needles went, how the collar fitted, how to roll and put someone onto a board. It was basic first aid and being a paramedic. All things he had done a million or more times in all sorts of differing situations, just never with his girlfriend, child and wife in the same place. Steven half expected a fight to get into the ambulance but he was right there with her.
He reached over to hang another IV line, there was little he could do other than pain management which was awkward because of the baby and try to make sure Alyssa made it to the hospital. Keep her alive long enough to get there, there were days when he hated thinking it but it was all there was to do as he reached for her hand. “You’ll be okay; the best people will be taking care of you.” He said as he did his best ‘everything will be fine’ look he had practiced over the years. “You’ll be home in no time.”
Steven could barely look at Artemis right then, he was happy, sad, angry and worried. All about three different people and one he was praying would make it to the hospital. He barely had the right words for Alyssa let alone Artemis too.
