[attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] Telling Jia meant someone else knew his secret, but coming out with the truth felt somehow liberating. Saying more could prove to be just as freeing. Nate decided to give it a shot. Grace wasn't here to defend herself, or interject with dubious commentary, which made opening up easier. "She showed up on my doorstep, claiming she wanted to reconnect, but acted like a hypocrite the entire time."For some reason, one he couldn't put into words, Nate had kept the small slip of paper she'd given him that day. It was probably a step up from the low level security job he'd been working, but he didn't want to give Grace the satisfaction of actually calling up the person on the other line. According to the handwritten note, some guy named Cam. Thanks to a military career which had begun early, Nate had accumulated quite the savings. He could get by with this job just fine, even if it was barely above minimum wage. Nate could have even talked about where things had gone wrong with his parents, but instead let out the frustrated sigh he'd been holding. Just because they were family didn't mean they had his best interests at heart. Plenty of families maintained toxic relationships. "Does any of this really matter?"Jia Lei Yang [attr="class","Nateright2"] |

Jia listened to Nate, the fact that Grace had reached out to him was good, at least in her eyes it had to be a sign that things could be fixed there. Waiting until Nate finished Jia nodded for a moment, “But she showed up Nate, that’s a step forward.” Jia said, it was an attempt to offer some good in the situation. It was difficult to get her mind around the idea Nate was back and she herself had wanted to arrest him and shoot him, not too long ago so how his sister would take things.
Family meant a lot to her, it still did even though she had chosen to run from his family a little. In her head, who wanted the fiancé hanging around after the fact? Her own family was in a mess too, she could barely recall the last time she had a meal or seen her father. Jia’s stepmother kept the two of them apart as best she could along with her choice to marry someone outside of the Chinese nationality and her niece, she sent cards and letters but her own family was far from reaching distance. It was the reason even thinking Nate could pull away from his own family, seemed like such a bad idea.
The frustrated sigh said everything as she squeezed his hand lightly. “Now I know you don’t mean that Nate.” Jia said softly, “You’re not the guy that gives up on family. I’m sure Grace was only trying to help in her own way. For the sake of being hypocritical too, you know it matters more than a drink or an argument. Family can reconnect given time. So how was Grace hypocritical? Did she tell you to stop drinking?” It was a long shot given she had no idea what had been said but she could only hope it was to help Nate.
“Did you even have anyone to talk to about all of this when you were... away? Family, coming back home, any of it?” Jia asked, she hoped he had but given what was going on practically she felt it was a no. It was one of many reasons she wanted to yell at him for not telling her about it but she knew why, even if it did hurt being kept out of it.

[attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] Even if Nate hadn't been drinking earlier, Jia still would have made some sense. A part of him kept wanting to fight her logic, but he couldn't think of a solid counterargument. Grace had showed up – a good first step to repairing an otherwise damaged relationship – but it was her intentions Nate questioned. If his sister had come to critique his drinking, he didn't want to hear it. Her own drinking habits weren't exactly stellar. Jia started asking a lot of questions at one time – too many. Nate kept his mouth shut, working through his answer. He hated himself for even thinking it, but would Jia judge him if he said the wrong thing? He gave a half-hearted nod about Grace. "It's been years. Maybe I've changed." As soon as Nate said it, he regretted his choice in words. But it was true. He had changed. People came back different from combat all the time – this wasn't unlike that. "No," Nate admitted, as Jia questioned him about his time away. "There wasn't anyone I could trust." He'd had a lot of time to think, but the kind of people he was surrounded by were terrorists and criminals – not the type he could come clean with. He could only stew, alone, with his thoughts. Jia knew she had asked too much the moment Nate fell silent. She wanted to ask so much and for a moment she had left herself run away with it. The cop in her hardly helped either, she spent her day asking questions and even in the military she had done the same. Questions had answers but with Nate, she had answers and she had more questions which just made everything completed. There was the old saying ‘never ask a question you never want answered’ and Jia felt she had done just that.
The moment those words hung in the air as she tried to think of something, anything really to say back to it. He had changed. She had been foolish to even think the same man would have come back from the dead; her heritage told her enough to know it was untrue. Those that passed never came back the same, they lost things, pieces of themselves and in the military once you saw a thing or two. People changed and right now was no different, though it took Nate saying it out loud for her to realise it.
Was there any point in clinging to the memories she had, a life before with the man that had changed? She had said goodbye to that the day he ‘died’ and now this was just. She had no idea given she could see changes, hear them too when he spoke but how much was alcohol and a bad situation. “Well there’s no maybe about it. I mean you’ve changed but I still want to know the new you, if you want me to?” Jia said, as she attempted a joke to dig herself out of a hole she had thrown herself into. “I really wasn’t going to say anything but since you brought up changing... you got old.” She teased as she nudged him lightly.
“If you feel you can trust me then you can talk about anything you want, I hope you'd know I wouldn’t judge you on anything you said.” She said smiling lightly. “How about we get you something to eat and we can find out if you’re taste in food has changed.” Jia offered, she hesitated in reaching out for his hand again not sure if she should rely too much on what she knew or just start over which seemed almost like saying goodbye all over again.

[attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] Things were bound to change. It wasn't like time stood still for either of them. So that actually sounded like a good idea. Grab some dinner, work through what the new was, maybe even see where they stood after that? Everything else might soon click into place. Nate reached out for Jia's hand. Hopefully that much time and distance wouldn't prove to be a detriment, but they both seemed willing to try again. It was, if nothing else, a first, tentative step. The mood swings were coming fast and furious tonight, but this one wasn't unwelcome. "Yeah," Nate fired back. "I stopped eating Hispanic food altogether." He couldn't even say it with a straight face, but his life didn't depend on being able to sell this joke. Under the circumstances, with Jia, it wasn't like he risked taking a bullet execution style. A few weeks ago, if he got caught in a lie, Nate couldn't the same. Today, he just rolled with it and laughed. "Thought I might try something new. The French eat snails, right? That sounds appealing."At this point, the odds of Jia taking Nate seriously were slim to none. Not that they could really afford a restaurant fancy enough to serve escargot. Although, given the financial details regarding the new security position, maybe they actually could. It seemed working for such a large corporation might have its perks after all. Jia took Nate’s hand nervously, it had been a long time since she had been this nervous around him and it almost felt like she had gone back to square one again. The first time they met, talked, decided on the date and went from there. It was a familiar old feeling and a new nervous one rolled together. For one holding his hand had been the furthest thing from her mind when she set out to that corner of the street but for a first step, a first step to anything it seemed to be a good one.
It showed with the smile on her face until for a split second it fell, hearing the words he stopped eating Hispanic food. Jia was about to hesitate and splutter when she saw the face he had as she laughed. She punched his arm lightly, “No more Hispanic food, who are you and what did you do with the real Nate?” She asked with a laugh before she shivered and winced hearing about the snails. Slimy with shells, eating a snail that had been who knew where.
Even the mention of a place that might sell that sort of thing, she could hear her bank balance cringing at it. It was a sort of bonus at work or some long overtime and she would happily pay any price to sit a plate of snails in front of Nate just to see if he would attempt to eat them. Jia always felt that any restaurant they visited always felt fancy just because he was there. It was strange but she felt like a greasy spoon dive bar that your burger might walk off the plate on its own, could feel like a five star establishment simply because he was there with her.
“Now you mention it, I think I could go for a plate of Escargot. A side salad and fries with that sounds great to me.” She said trying to keep a straight face. “If I’d have known we could have tried that new street food place a few blocks away, I hear the crickets and scorpions are particularly good. Since you mentioned it though, we can always take a walk through the park to find you some snails for supper? That way you know they’re fresh?” She teased though honestly if he said yes, she would have to consider having him committed or arrested for being completely insane.

[attr="class","Natenah"] [attr="class","Nateleft"] [attr="class","Nateleft2"] | [attr="class","Nateright"] Since his staged death, in order to go undercover, Nate didn't think he would ever get to hold her hand again. There was always the risk of actually dying or, if he made it through the mission alive, Jia hating his guts for lying to her. For the first time tonight, however, he could admit to feeling completely at ease, his lips forming a genuine smile. If Jia wasn't at least interested in moving forward, she wouldn't reach out for his hand. The development brought more of Nate's trademark dry humor to the surface. Jia should know that a Hispanic – at least this Hispanic – wouldn't stop eating Hispanic food unless something was seriously wrong. He played into that notion now, picking an even less likely scenario to explain himself. "Yeah. I was kidnapped by aliens and reprogrammed. Obviously."That seemed like the most outrageous possibility… until Jia outdid him by suggesting escargot and fries – two foods that shouldn't ever be mentioned together in the same sentence. It earned a disbelieving stare. One was premier dining, the other was fast food. After the whole alien thing, though, he probably deserved the turnaround. "Interesting combination."Jia Lei Yang [attr="class","Nateright2"] |
