[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WOULD I BITE? on days ending with Y Grace hated her father right then. She knew things had been tough, sure it wasnt like finding someone dead on the floor had been easy but her dad was in pieces and she wasnt taking it well. She could cope with the zombie dad, the dad that didnt talk much and the dad that was a little bit nuts. He had a pass for all of that but the dad that forgot to pick her up from school when it was his turn and the dad that missed parents day. That dad she didnt know at all.
It was equal parts scary and angry and right now. Sat on the front step of the school waiting for her dad to come get her, she was angry with him. Grace knew Stephanie was busy which was why it was all organised in advance that Ben would be there, be there for her teachers to tell him how she was doing. At least show up for the stupid form she had to get signed to say a parent had been to talk to the school. Right now after waiting and insisting that her teachers wait for an extra hour, she looked like an idiot.
That didnt bother her either but the fact her dad didnt let her down like that. That worried her, made her angry and yes if looks could kill, the gate of the school would have been melted from its hinges right then. Grace was old enough to wait on her own but right then, all she wanted was her dad back or Stephanie there to tell her that her dad got caught up with work and he hadn’t forgotten her. He was out saving Chicago just like Stephanie did but no, she knew better because her dad wasnt working that day because he had her parents day to attend.

Ben had deliberately taken the day off for the parent’s day at school, he knew he had been far from present recently with the family so he had aimed to try and get back to normal. He had done the house work, put the washing on, tidied the dishes away and was mid way through folding clothes when the messenger had knocked on the door. Ben had done his best to try and forget about what was going on, he had tried to work through it, push himself back into the swing of things but that morning threw him again.
He signed for and opened the thick letter, filled with details of his family’s finances, the business, everything that he had tried to escape was right there in black and white lettering. His mother had struck from beyond the grave and it felt like a gut punch as he sank back into the couch reading and rereading everything that he never wanted. Ben barely had time to think about what was written down, it felt like he had been dragged right back into the family business again and in a sense he had because it was written right there.
Ben had been lost in thought when he heard his phone ring; he glanced down at it seeing the number of the school. “Crap.” He mumbled as he saw the time emblazoned upon the top of the screen. Grabbing the car keys Ben took off, there was no chance he would make it or could make up the time he knew had past. No he had missed his daughter’s day, not because of work, no he had taken the day off and Grace knew it. It made him feel ill as he drove finally getting to the school as he saw the teacher stood with Grace.
Ben knew the second he saw his daughter that he was in trouble. He never let her down, not like that and he knew it. More so he could see it in Grace’s face too as he got out of the car after pulling up trying to smile as he made his way toward Grace. “Hey, sorry I’m late. I got caught up.” Ben stated, it was the truth though not the truth he wanted to admit to.

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WOULD I BITE? on days ending with Y Grace didnt know what to make of her dad recently, he wasnt ‘off the rails’ as such. He hadn’t taken up drinking or worse but he wasnt the dad she knew. Talking about it, yeah it wasnt really a Taylor family trait and she knew that everyone else saw it anyway. No point in stating the obvious really. Grace sat waiting with the teacher until she saw the familiar car, so now he remembered to come and get her. Way after the fact? Just great when she was the afterthought of her own father.
She didnt really change the annoyed and disappointed look on her face, it was about time her dad was told exactly what was going on. Even that tried smile, it annoyed her more than she let on as she grabbed her bag and moved toward her dad. “Yeah caught up... go figure.” Grace snapped as she brushed past her dad and headed straight for the car. “What was it this time, staring, zombie or just plain forgot about me?” It was a valid question she felt given it was like the fifty stages of Ben Taylor recently.
She yanked the door to the passenger side open before throwing her bag into the back seat as she dropped herself in to the seat. Slammed the door and sat with her arms across her chest, oh she was going to yell at him for not turning up. If he didnt want to then she could have asked Stephanie, she hadn’t let her down at all and seemed to be carrying the family so far as Grace knew. Her dad was a lost cause or he just didnt care which was strange given Grace knew her dad hated his own mother.
Family, it was complicated but she didnt think it would ever make her dad do this as she glared at him from behind the safety of the windscreen. She could see the teacher still stood there, the one who had made up every excuse about her dad being busy and even managed to throw in the saving the city line. No he wasnt off saving the city at all because he took the day off, it was forgivable if he was. This wasnt that.

Ben had been under no illusions that it would be easy to face Grace but the snapping and the fact she practically brushed past him. He fought the urge to yell at her as he laughed it off to the teacher. “Teenagers huh... you just never know what mood they’ll be in.” Ben said as he tried to figure out the best way to reply to his daughter’s question. He had forgotten but only because his head was stuck thinking about the family, what had to be done and the papers that came that day.
He needed to figure out what to do with it all, to tell Stephanie about it or sit on it and never say a word. At least he knew family was taken care of even if the money was a little less than well earned. He had a place in Los Angeles now, a home to sell, his childhood home and business that he needed to off load. Just what he needed to deal with when he was still working out if he could stop feeling guilty over not feeling anything for his own mother.
Ben made his way back to the car. He could feel the glare from outside the car as he chose to stay silent for a moment until she shut the door having heard Grace’s door slam. “If you want to break the car go right ahead if it’d make you feel better but slam it again and you’ll not see your phone or a screen for a month.” Ben stated as he reached for his seatbelt. “I got caught up in things and I’m sorry for not being here.” He knew it was never going to be good enough and he felt bad enough about it himself for missing the parents day.
“I know it doesn’t mean much right now but I am sorry Gracie.” He said trying to soften the glare in any way possible. “I’ll call the teachers and get another appointment, I promise. I’m sure you’re doing fine in school anyway or I’d have heard about it by now.” Ben said smiling as he reached over to hug Grace in an attempt to say sorry. This had been difficult and he knew he was hardly handling things at all. Maybe Stephanie was right and he did need to take Brittany seriously, he could call her and try to set up another appointment and see if that helped at all or he could drag Grace too.

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WOULD I BITE? on days ending with Y Grace stared at her dad as he threatened to take away her phone and access to a screen. “You think I care, hell take it all away. It’s not like I need it, I need my dad but you took him away too so why not the rest.” Grace snapped glaring at Ben, if he thought this was bad then he had no idea. Grace wasnt a problem child far from it but she had tried being good, doing the right thing and now if it would take stamping her feet and screaming to get her dad back then she’d do it.
She figured she oculd also enlist Zach too if needed, she didnt want to get him in trouble but desperate times called for desperate measures and they were all family. “Yeah you’re sorry, how many times have I heard that... you’re never late. You’re never caught up, you’re always there but not anymore. It’s fine, I can deal with that but then at least have the guts to tell me and not just leave me at school like an idiot.” Grace demanded feeling angrier and angrier toward her dad for this. It wasnt just missing today it was a whole bunch of other stuff.
Grace just laughed when she heard Ben say about making another appointment, she had wasted their time so it wasnt like they would be much interesting now in telling her dad much. Then he just had to keep digging as he spoke. “You’re sure huh, how sure are you dad because its not like you’ve been near my school. You’ve not done much other than work, sleep and eat I mean... do you even remember my name?” Grace asked knowing she was cutting it close but then if her dad wasnt listening he needed to.
“Make another appointment and find out that I’ve missed the last ten lots of homework to be handed in, skipped English class four times and chemistry three. Sure get told all of that but who cares right. It’s not like I’m your daughter or anything, have you even paid attention to Zach at all recently? Stephanie? Do you know what’s happening in life?” Grace asked figuring it was a good question, her dad seemed out of it to her. He wasnt thinking, doing much and he didnt forget her which hurt not just that he forgot her but then what about Stephanie and Zach too.

Ben wanted to go back to sleep and start the day over again, this was far from the daughter he had raised. Her snapping at him, yes she did that but never like this and not saying he could take it all away. “Sure then, hand your phone to me and all other things that you can look at a screen on.” Ben stated glaring right back at his daughter, why was she acting like a child. The terrible twos had ended twelve years ago. Yes a lot had gone on recently and yes Ben was struggling but he knew he would get through it.
He had no choice in it, not with a family to look after. “Grace, what has gotten into you?” Ben demanded as he heard her rant at him. He had been sorry for a lot of things lately, mostly because his mother was a nut case and Ben had tried to get away from that side of the family. “It’s once okay, I’m sorry but I didn’t forget I got stuck with something important and yes you had to wait a little longer. I will always be there that has never changed.” Ben said realising how badly he had messed it up this time. He never forgot the kids at all, he never forgot Stephanie as he realised that what had happened was far from himself.
“Near your school, yes I have. I’ve kept up with what you and Zach are doing and don’t be stupid of course I remember your name. You’re my daughter Grace, who’s being entirely unreasonable right now. I was late, it happens Grace. Stop acting like a child.” Ben argued trying to decide if he was angry or disappointed in himself or his daughter for acting like this. Ben gripped the steering wheel of the car as he started the engine, driving was a distraction if he drove then he got to think about something other than disappointing people.
Ben barely managed to pull out of the school yard before he slammed on the breaks hearing that Grace has skipped classes, not done her homework. “Grace Taylor, you are grounded for a month.” Ben shouted, “I am paying attention, aren’t you? What the hell are you thinking skipping classes, you’ll attend each class, do all your missed homework and so help me if I have to stand over you while you do it I will.” Ben hated that he was losing it, it felt like he had let things side and he knew he had but thinking was something he had tried to avoid.
“I know what’s happening in life, I know what Stephanie is doing, I know Zach is okay and I know you’re losing it because of what? I was late. Deal with it. I know what is going on, my mother is dead, I have a world of issues to deal with and my daughter is losing her mind. Yes I am well aware.” En added trying not to argue but then right now all he could do was argue.

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WOULD I BITE? on days ending with Y “Fine have it your way, it’s not like you’re not ruining everything anyway. Why not just go the whole mile.” Grace said as she practically thrust her phone at him knowing that her other screens were at home. Well it wasnt like she had many, just a small tablet that she did her school work on if required but that wasnt too often at all. No her dad was being an ass and as long as he decided to be that way, Grace was going to point out all life failings along the way just in case he missed them.
“What’s gotten into me? Yeah you noticed wow finally parent of the year award goes to Ben Taylor who hasn’t known what is going on for the last however long. Congrats dad, you’re finally what... being a dad again?” Grace said in her most sarcastic tone possible. It wasnt that things had been easy but when things got tough this time she felt like her dad checked out of life in general. He wasnt her dad, just a shell that she spoke to in a morning and didnt have much to do with unless she had to ask for a form signed for school.
“Always there huh, well when have you been there recently? Never... what you think that no one noticed you pull away. I mean sure I haven’t known you for the last fifteen or more years but then who cares about that. I’m just your daughter right, the one that waits outside of school until her dad remembers where she is.” Her tone was unusually dark but then Grace was trying to make a point to her dad. He didnt just get to pick and choose life moments, no he had to go through it just as much as the rest of them did.
Grace rolled her eyes when her dad called her on being a child, if anyone was the child it was the grown man driving the car. She didnt have Stephanie and Zach to vote on it but she was pretty sure they’d be on her side too about that. “You’re the child here dad. You’re the one who needs the baby sitter.” Grace snapped as she laughed hearing Ben ground her for a moment. Just another little joy of life until he forgot he did it and went back to sulking or whatever adult emotion generally being an idiot was called.
“See dad if you even cared you’d know I didnt skip class or miss homework but you’re okay to just jump down my throat about not doing it. Do you even know me anymore? I mean what the hell dad, are you even that anymore? You don’t know what’s going on because you’re too stuck up with the fact that yes she’s gone but you know what. She threatened to take me away, you threw me out of the house that morning and I saw her when she... so yeah if anyone gets to lose it. I think I can but no, I dont get to because the adult in the family has already done it.” Grace stated as she glared at Ben.
“You left the family to what mope that it happened? The rest of us had to be the adults because you turned into some kind of none talking plant idiot of a dad that forgot to even pick me up. Sure it’s once now but what about next week? The week after that or next year?” Grace asked figuring that if Ben didn’t snap out of whatever he was going through then it was the end to the Taylor family as she knew it.

“Grace, don’t even go there.” Ben snapped back at her as he took her phone. She was lucky she had a phone right now as he considered dropping it in the sink when they got home. Ben was trying his best with what he had, his family was a mess not immediate family but his mother and the family firm and everything that went with it. His brain was at critical mass with information, things he needed to do and worse yet he had no idea where to start on it. He had been out of the loop with that side of things for years, as long as Grace had been alive if not longer and now it was all at the front of his mind.
“Grace Taylor you watch what you’re saying to me right now. I’ve always been your dad and always will be, if you’d talk to me then that might help me out a little.” Ben stated deciding he was hardly all to blame, even though he knew he had taken a huge step back on life in general. “It’s not like I’ve had a broken lawn mower to deal with you know. Do you have any idea what goes on in an adults world, no because you’re a kid and every father tries to make it as simple for their daughter as possible. So you can go to school and not worry about a thing.” If only it had been that easy he thought though the way Grace was going on, it should have been.
“Grace it was one time, okay just once. I got sidetracked and yes I missed picking you up but what if it was a fire call you’d have been fine with that! Drop the attitude before I ground you for a month right now.” Ben warned trying not to get mad as he drove, car accidents happened that way and despite the fact he wanted to drive into a wall right now it was a bad idea. He had to bite his lip firmly not to snap back at the sitter comment, oh he would make sure Grace had a sitter if that was how she wanted to play things.
Ben stared at Grace a moment when she seemed to lose it about who got to lose it first. He knew he had screwed up but he was unaware it had been that bad until it was laid out for him by his almost sixteen year old daughter. “I know she’s gone and yes I threw you out that morning because I didn’t want you to be part of a conversation that wasn’t nice. You don’t need to worry about that and you skipped class to come home early, I know you saw her and you can lose it whenever you want to but not at me. Not for this. I did my best to make sure that you stayed with me, with the family and I’m sorry if you think i’ve not been an adult but your grandmother was a spiteful awful woman. I know that better than you ever will.” Ben said hardly believing he had to have this sort of conversation to explain himself.
“What did you want me to do Grace? I won’t forget again I promise you. Is that not good enough for you? I’ll do whatever it takes to prove that to you but some things need to be sorted out still and I’m trying to do that. I’m trying to be the adult here and it’s not just our family that I have to deal with. I’m sorry I haven’t been much of a dad recently, I really am but I’m working on it and promise it’ll get better, just give me some time.” Ben asked, the feeling of guilt rising as he realised how awful it must have been. Who knew what Zach and Stephanie thought when his own daughter was tearing him to pieces about not being there.

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WOULD I BITE? on days ending with Y Watch what she was saying? Yeah since when did she have to do that one she wondered. Her dad was being less like a dad each passing day and the man just didn’t see it one bit. What did he seen a siren call because the sirens on truck seemed to be about all he was interested in lately and Grace wasn’t happy about that. There were two other people in the family, Stephanie and Zach and the idea that he was doing the same to them, it didnt sit right given the person she knew her dad to be before all of the, well crap happened.
“Talk to you, ha what do you want to say dad? Talking to you right now, I might as well just talk to myself for all the good it’d do.” Grace replied, she wasnt wanting to hold back on anything given the way Ben was acting. “Well congrats on being dad of the year, looks like you even screwed that up because when I’m at school I’m thinking about what you’re doing or not doing. If you have a brain attached to you or not that day and if you’re coming home from work or just moving into the fire house. So great take all that worry away why dont you.” She snapped glaring at him not caring now what she said so long as it got any kind of reaction out of him.
“Ground me dad do whatever you want to because it can’t be any worse than what you’re doing at the moment.” She replied wondering if he had any idea what that was, sure Grace was a few years of being an adult but hell if she could see just what was going on. Then her dad seemed to want to get mad, well mad was better than nothing she figured. Strike on in her book, he still felt some emotion in life he hadn’t turned entirely into a robot yet. “Yeah fine you know that better but you threw me out, you didnt let me know what was going on and you think that’s okay to do?” She asked.
Like hell it was with her, no nothing about this was remotely okay with her and it was about time Ben realised that. “Yeah right dad, how much time another day, a week, a year... will any of us still be here in a year because this, this I can’t deal with. You’re turning into a zombie that isn’t my dad and if I have to disown you then I will.” Grace stated knowing she’d never do that but if it made her point then she could say it. “You should see someone or talk to Stephanie or something because this isn’t you and I want my dad back yesterday.” She added staring out of the window.

Ben had no idea where he had gone wrong with Grace, they talked. They were close and this sort of thing blew over within a few seconds but the way it was heading, Ben was finding this argument was one that might drag on. “You don’t ever get to worry about me, you were fine with me working truck for years. You don’t get to drag my job into this when at least it seems to be the one thing I can do lately.” If there was ever a truer statement it was that, he could do his job the best he could.
“Fine you’re grounded until further notice, you go to school and you come home. Nothing else, no TV, no computer... nothing. Eat, sleep, school, repeat.” Ben announced harshly, he might need to check in with Stephanie on it and given the family record with computers. A ban for Grace was a good thing, the last thing he needed was Zach teaching Grace anything too out there. Ben’s hands gripped the wheel tightly as he tried not to lose it with his daughter. He was attempting that period but right now, it was a second by second fight not to scream and yell at her.
Ben pulled up to the lights, watching them closely. The sooner he got home and out of the car the better for everyone. “So what more did you want to know Grace? That my own mother wanted to take you away from me? That I didn’t know how that would go, what would happen or anything more than you did. What do you want to know more than that?” Ben asked as he saw the light turn green. His mood had him stomping on the gas, watching as the car started to take those first few meters.
For just one second he turned his head to look at Grace, to say those two words I’m sorry. Things never happen slowly, in each and every incident in life or work he never really knew what happened until it already had. The familiar tingling feeling and nerves, almost always followed by nausea and a good dose of time to think. “GRACE!” He screamed but by that point it was already too late. His hand flew out toward her in an attempt to press her back against the seat.
The world seemed to stop, the glass, the crunching sound followed by the realisation that he had no control over a situation. There was no control to be had as the car seemed to fly of its own accord into the middle of the intersection. Even when he could see the tyres of the other vehicle. The loud ringing in his ears and the fact that he was closer to the tarmac than the sky did he realise the car was upside down and the world was hazy.

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WOULD I BITE? on days ending with Y “Yeah I get to drag your job into things any day I like.” Grace said defiantly, “You could die any day, any shift and you say I can’t worry. Stephanie could too and then who would I have? So yeah I worry now I know that you’re not superhuman and indestructible like I thought when I was five.” Grace shot back, she wasn’t in the mood to argue with a brick wall anymore. There wasn’t any getting through to her dad at this rate. Listening was a skill maybe he didn’t have, if Stephanie was here she was sure she’d understand and Stephanie wouldn’t have forgotten to pick her up either.
Figuring that was the last thing she would throw at her dad but if she needed to, she had the option. Then came the grounded, it was life anyway so it went to prove just how much had dad had kept up with things. She went to school, she ate dinner, sure there was some TV and computer work but nothing major. She preferred books which he seemed to forget, again maybe she just didn’t exist to her dad anymore? It would explain a lot she figured as she saw the light. “I want to know that I still have a dad!” Grace yelled seeing the light turn green before glaring at Ben.
Hearing her dad scream her name, she figured she was banned from most things in life now until she felt the world explode around her. In a sheer panic her hand held tightly onto her dads that seemed to force her back into the seat when it seemed like all she wanted to do was slide sideways and then down. Sideways out of the seat and then the world seemed to be the wrong way. She could see the sidewalk, the trees, even the bench but maybe it was just her eyes because they weren’t the right way up.
The dashboard was digging into her knees and her door, she was reaching for the door handle that wasnt there as she felt nothing but air. “Dad... dad.” Grace called out, her hands were shaking as she tried to look for Ben. It was strange when all she had to do was turn but it seemed difficult to do as she reached out to his shake his shoulder. “Dad... talk to me... dad.” She yelled tugging at his tshirt as she tried to shake him. Grace could feel the panic rising, the fear to breath or look anywhere. She didn’t want the last question she asked her dad to be was he still her dad?

Ben was unsure what hurt more, the hit that came out of nowhere or his daughter’s words. She still had a dad so far as he was aware but right then he was more bothered with his daughter than anyone else in the world. It felt like an hour to him until the world seemed to come back somewhat, he could hear a ringing in his ear followed by Grace yelling. She seemed to be far away as all he could think was she had been thrown from the ar. It was all that made sense until he felt her hand on his shoulder.
“Grace... Grace.” Ben called out as he turned in his seat, he could see Grace beside him, feel her tugging at his shirt as he could see the dashboard digging into her knees. “Grace, look at me... are you hurt?” Ben asked trying to struggle with his seat belt as he felt his hand reach for the button as he heard it click free. It might have been a good idea to brace himself before he moved as he fell face first into the top of the car as he struggled to make himself upright.
Ben glanced over himself for a moment, nothing more than scratches and maybe bruises tomorrow as he tried to see how he could get Grace out. “Don’t panic okay, I’ve got this.” He said, his heart almost breaking as he realised how many accidents he had said that exact sentence to. “Just stay still and breathe for me, I’m coming around to your side.” Ben said decisively as he stumbled out of the car and made his way around to the passenger side of the car.
He could see the busted underside of the car, the tyres almost folded back on themselves as he saw that Grace’s car door was missing. The other truck seemed barely damaged as Ben could see the driver stumble from the cab holding his forehead that seemed to have a cut. Ben barked at the man to call 911 though he was unlikely to wait for CFD right now. No his daughter was getting out of that car right now, as he crawled into the space between the roof and Grace’s seat. “Just give me a minute to work it out okay.” He said smiling at Grace for a moment.

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WOULD I BITE? on days ending with Y Grace stared at her dad, she might have been angry with him before right then she wasn’t angry anymore. She was worried and terrified and the one of two people she trusted most in the world was right there with her. “Hurt... I don’t know. Am I?” She asked Ben trying to look over herself, it hurt sure it did but then again she hadn’t expected an impact of any kind. It felt like she was there and wasn’t there as she watched Ben try to find the seat belt.
She couldn’t help but laugh watching her dad fall face first into the top of that car, any other time she might have been worried but dangling upside down in her seat. Seeing her dad face plant, it was funny. “Yeah, I doubt it but I’ll trust you.” Grace said still laughing as she smiled. Honestly as far as a bad day went she was hating it but the small moment of laughter was more than welcome. “No don’t go... just stay.” Grace asked trying to see where her dad went as she saw him at her side.
“Dad, I’m okay here... just go help the other guy.” She said seeing the legs of a man walking aimlessly around. The world looked a very different place as she hung upside down, “Where’s my bag?” She asked glancing around for the school bag. “It’s got homework in it and school stuff.” She said as she tugged at her belt hoping to dislodge herself as she squirmed in the seat trying to push her legs free. “It won’t budge dad.” She said hitting her hands against the plastic dashboard.
“You’ve got to get out of here before Stephanie finds out.” Grace stated almost scared for her life, she wasn’t sure if Stephanie would kill Ben for this or if she would be mad or what would happen. It wasn’t like they couldn’t tell her because well. There was a car and now there wasn’t but then again given how her dad had been going on, it wouldn’t be too out of character to at least say he changed it or forgot it somewhere. That was if the CFD didn’t rat them out which was likely.
