[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WHY CAN'T I BREATHE whenever I think of you Kalila was attempting to move on with life, she had a new room with Lucas, a guy she met at a bar which in her mind was perfectly normal. Her attempt at thinking with alcohol had worked and sure given their jobs Kalila found she had spare time on her hands. Just like that night, in her attempts to try and fit in more she decided to do what everyone her age seemed to do. Date. One of the other girls at the surgery had put a dating app on her phone and that night, she had managed to find a date.
Sure he might have been a little older, like fifty something but he seemed nice enough to her. She hadn’t told Lucas anything about it, given she wasnt sure he would want to know or really needed to. It was better she worked out all of this for herself she thought as she dug through her things to find something nice to wear for the evening. She bypassed her usual more demure and practical clothing, even her traditional things for a blue dress she had bought earlier that week for the occasion.
With that all done, heels, light makeup and hair done Kalila headed out into the world. Blissfully unaware of most things in life, sure she was naive and a little too trusting but then who would lie on a dating website was her idea. Kalila found her way to her date, she sat down for a lovely dinner at a restaurant that was as far out of her budget as six months wages could be. The guy seemed nice enough if not a little odd but then what guy wasnt really and the fact that he was old enough to be her dad if not granddad.
Still Kalila didnt think much of it, her first date trying to do something American all on her own wasnt going all that badly. She tried new foods that she didnt know much about and the wine tasted like a flat fizzy drink she had that wasnt alcoholic. It wasn’t until her third glass of wine that those words were uttered to her, ‘my room is just upstairs, why don’t we go and take a look at the city’. Kalila felt a little woozy as she leaned on the man and went with him until she got off the elevator at his floor. She could see the walls start to move and floor spin as she felt ill, reaching out to grab the wall for more support.
She could hear the man talking, pulling on her arm as a few people walked past her. The muttering of just another drunk girl and such a nice man as she tried to pull her arm back. It wasn’t until her hand managed to latch onto the fire axe case on the wall that she gathered the strength to stay put. Two doors away from his room and her head didnt feel good at all, she could hear him talking, trying to pull her again until she refused flat out. She didn’t see his hand coming at her at all, the words about a waste of a meal and time. The back of his hand managed to catch her on her face and sent her flying into the glass of the fire axe case smashing it as the glass cut her arm.
Screaming she backed away seeing the guy run to his room as Kalila pressed and pressed the button for the elevator. It seemed to take forever as she stumbled into it, wrapping her dress around her arm as her tears streamed down her face. She still had her bad around her good arm as she ran from the hotel restaurant and stumbled into the nearest cab. It took her long enough to reel off the address she now knew as home before the cabbie took one look at her arm and the destination became the hospital.
By the time the Cabbie had dropped her off in the waiting room and spoken to the nurse, Kalila couldnt even tell anyone where she was as she felt her head was spinning and she didnt exactly feel like herself. Her blood stained dress and throbbing cheek were bad enough but she knew it wasnt the alcohol that had that much of an effect as she waited to see a nurse. Kalila sat there trying to think until she realised that Lucas was working, with that in mind she didnt want him to know a thing about it. Kalila pushed herself from the waiting room chair before stumbling a step or two and hitting the floor as nothing seemed to be working as she stared at the ceiling praying that Lucas was home or he was just too busy to be in the ER that night.

[attr="class","Lucasner"] [attr="class","Lucasner1"] [attr="class","Lucasback"] [attr="class","Lucasnert"]Lucas was having a hell of a night. He usually worked in the maternity ward but the ER needed a hand, as they usually did so he was helping them out tonight. Drunk people throwing up their beer and kids with the flu. He hated it more than anything else. He was constantly cleaning up to make sure he didn't pass anything along or catch it himself. Oi it was a nightmare. One thing Lucas wanted was a small break and he knew he wasn't getting that tonight. That's when he was paged into the waiting room for a woman who had passed out. Lucas dropped the paperwork he was filling out and ran out with other nurses and orderlies. He was focused on what information he didn't have at this point. It wasn't usually protocol for him to go out but something had to trigger them to page him. It hit him the moment he saw the figure laying on the ground. Kalila, he was her emergency contact. Well that explained that. Lucas pushed his way through to get to his roommate. “Kalila, Kalila can you hear me?” He asked as he hand checked her pulse. Despite all the technological equipment around he wanted to know things much faster. It wasn't all numbers sometimes. The cuts on her arm were one thing but the bruise across her face was another. He threw his phone at one of the nurses. “Text Braden Murphy. Tell him to meet me here and bring his partner with him.” He wasn't sure how much Kalila trusted men but if the marks on her face were any indication, it would be nice if a female could also be in the mix. He knew Braden and Sharon would get to the bottom of this. With his attention turned back to Kalila he brushed the hair from her face and helped them get her on a gurney to take her back to a room. Lucas wasn't fixing to leave. Not until he was sure that everything was fine. Though he took to tending to her arm himself after ordering a tox screening to find out just what was in her system. Lucas pulled up a chair and wrapped an icepack gently in a towel to set alongside her face. It brought make painful memories of his ex fiance and the bruises she had from being attacked. This wasn't happening again. Lucas had to collect his thoughts. [attr="class","Lucasner2"] [attr="class","Lucasnerlyric"]There's a joke here somewhere I'll shake this world off my shoulders

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WHY CAN'T I BREATHE whenever I think of you Crap, or the Arabic equivalent fell from her lips the minute she saw his face and heard his voice. So much for mercy when it came to Lucas being home, maybe she should have gone to another hospital away on the other side of town. She didnt have much choice in the matter as she was happy enough just to go home and try to work out what was happening there. “Lucas! Don’t please.” She gasped as she tried to raise her hand to stop him from checking her pulse though she found it just flopped right back down onto the floor after a few inches.
She felt like a lead weight there as all she could do was stare at Lucas, terrified as to what he would do. Would he kick her out for drinking? Was she heading right back to where she had started a short while ago or worse, she hadn’t a clue what kind of punishment there would be for this. Even worse was she had bothered him at work, that in her mind was the biggest wrong in the world and if she could have. She would have crawled right back out the door and just gone home to collapse on the floor there.
Kalila tried to focus on what was going on as she saw Lucas throw his phone and she heard a name. “No, don’t. I need to go.” She practically begged as she tried to move away but the more she tried to move the more like lead she felt as she wasnt getting very far in her attempted escape. Maybe this was dating in America, maybe she hadn’t done it right or should have gone along with it. She had been bought in Palestine so maybe the dinner was his payment for her as she tried to reason the entire thing out.
“I can leave Lucas, I promise you wont hear from me at all. I’ll get my things, you don’t need to call anyone to make me go.” Kalila blurted terrified that this was some form of heavy muscle to get rid of the issue of herself. Her head wasnt exactly thinking straight and her speech was slightly slurred as she felt herself lifted onto the gurney and taken to a back room. No this wasnt what she thought that night when she had gone out, a nice meal, a nice guy and now... now Lucas was right there which she wasnt sure if she was mortified by that or just plain embarrassed or both.
When Kalila saw the ice wrapped in the towel she winced, “I’m sorry Lucas, I’m really sorry. I didnt mean to cause trouble, I promise it wont happen again. I should have gone with him, I... I didnt mean to bother you at work, I just wanted to go home.” She said through panicked sobs and slurred speech with a few words in Arabic here and there. Her eyes staring at him terrified that he would do the exact same as the previous guy. Kalila couldnt much think straight as she lay there, the tears starting to fall from her eyes as she wasnt sure how to apologise for what had happened.

[attr="class","Lucasner"] [attr="class","Lucasner1"] [attr="class","Lucasback"] [attr="class","Lucasnert"]Her pleading fell on deaf ears. He was going to take care of things, regardless. She was in his hospital and he was going to find out what happened one way or the other. Even if she didn’t tell him, then Lucas was still going to have his brother and partner open an investigation. It was one thing that Lucas didn’t tolerate was someone pushing women around. That wasn’t to say he hadn’t before. He was no golden child; but he had learned his lesson the hard way and yes it had taken a brick to the skull in a matter of speaking. Lucas glared at Kalila. “You aren’t going anywhere.” He wrapped an arm around her comfortingly and gently pressed the ice to her bruising. Lucas knew he was stronger but he was using the least force possible needed to get her to stay put. She was in hysterics and Lucas knew it all too well. Blaming herself for what someone else did. “Do I need to repeat myself? Kalila, it’s safe here. I got you.” He whispered in her ear. Though to be fair he was raging on the inside. Whomever had done this would pay. Without much thought to it at all, Lucas’ hand started rubbing circles on her back making a soft shushing sound. Hearing she should have gone with him he shook his head. If she had done so she’d probably be dead. “Kalila, look at me. People who do these sorts of things, they don’t stop. It wasn’t your fault. You are safe here, I promise it.” Lucas’ promises some decades ago would have meant jack diddly but such wasn’t the case anymore. Lucas understood that she was afraid of him so he kept his hands relatively still. The one on the ice pack and the other just comforting her. Not all men hit. A hard to lesson to learn for someone in her state. Lucas could feel his anger still rising at the person who did this. So help him if Sharon or Braden let on any information. [googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WHY CAN'T I BREATHE whenever I think of you When Lucas glared at her, she tried to nod even though she wanted to be anywhere but the hospital. If she had gone home she could have hidden out in her room and not seen Lucas for a week. Even when he put his arm around her she tried not the be scared but it wasnt easy, the last guy who tried to put his hands on her had landed her there in the first place. Kalila glanced up at Lucas as she shook her head, “It’s not safe, I was supposed to be safe and what if he comes looking for me?” She asked not entirely sure the guy would bother but she wasn’t used to being pushed around either.
She couldn’t help but sob into his side when she felt the circles on her back, it reminded her of Saajida. There was safe, maybe that made what Lucas said to her true. Hearing Lucas again she looked at him, she could almost feel the terror rising in her when he said that the people that did this didn’t stop. “You.. you mean he will come back... he won’t stop?” She sobbed not sure if she wanted to run or just hide where she was as she threw her arms around Lucas tightly.
“It was my fault... I must have done something he didn’t like, I must have... I didn’t go to his room, I stopped I shouldn’t have held onto the wall.” She muttered not sure what to say about any of it. “America was supposed to be safe, I can say no but I felt woozy after the drink, and I can drink I’ve not felt like that before and then... I should have gone with him.” She said through sobs as she wanted to believe Lucas that she was safe there. The ice pack felt cold against but a good kind of cold, the same with the hand on her back as she settled into his touch comfortably. Kalila knew she was naive at times but this wasnt something she had known about, she was bought to join a family which was what she was used to. She had rules to follow which didn’t always go right but maybe that was what she needed, Lucas to have more rules. Dating now seemed the worst idea in the world and staying inside her room seemed like the best. “Are you sure you don’t want me to go? I can pack my things, move out and you wont have to see me again. I just want you to know I'm sorry, I didn't want you to know about it. I really am sorry to have bothered you.” She said as she offered again to go wanting to make sure Lucas had a way out, if she was back home a night like that and she would be lucky not to be in serious trouble with her family.

[attr="class","Lucasner"] [attr="class","Lucasner1"] [attr="class","Lucasback"] [attr="class","Lucasnert"]Lucas just kept his touch light and gentle with Kalila. He could hurt someone if he really wanted to. If someone so much as touched Kalila it was going to be on. “I’m not going to let anyone hurt you. I promise.” He wasn’t going to inform her that he would beat the guy up for so much as entering the room but that is exactly what would happen. Lucas had chilled out over the years but the fighting angst hadn’t left him entirely. Feeling Kalila tighten around him he hugged her but kept the light circles. “I won’t let him come back.” He used his other hand to push some hair from her face. Without thinking as she blamed herself he kissed the top of her forehead. “This isn’t your fault. Some men just don’t know how to treat women.” He had been there once. He’d mistreated women in his life but had a come to his senses moment long ago. That wasn’t something Lucas could say most men would get. When the nurse came in, Lucas held his hand up for the nurse to stop. “Give us a few minutes. I’ve got this handled.” He explained. He was a medical doctor and technically he wasn’t on duty but it wasn’t like she was unsupervised by a medical professional either. The nurse slowly backed out of the room, not questioning things “I don’t want you to go anywhere Kalila.” He spoke softly. “You aren’t in any trouble. I like to know you are safe. I’m glad someone called me.” Lucas was a sucker when it came to women who needed someone to look after them. That’s how things had gone so wrong with his ex. He had his twin sons at home to look after too. Oliver and Chandler were a handful on their own but that didn’t mean he couldn’t look after Kalila too. Lucas found himself playing with her hair. Just take a few breaths. Try and rest. I’ve got you. [attr="class","Lucasner2"] [attr="class","Lucasnerlyric"]There's a joke here somewhere I'll shake this world off my shoulders

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WHY CAN'T I BREATHE whenever I think of you Even just hearing the words that he wouldn’t let anyone hurt her, she felt oddly safe there. She believed him for what it was worth though she still wasn’t sure she wanted to admit that at all. Of all the times she had stayed with Lucas he had been nice, kind and now he was doing more than she ever thought possible. So if he promised then she could believe it as she nodded to him. “Thank you.” She mumbled lightly still not sure he wasn’t about to punish her for being stupid but at least another guy wasn’t an issue right now.
“Will you promise that too?” She asked, knowing it was a lot but the first promise had calmed her down a little, despite her arms still wrapped tightly around him. She couldn’t understand why he was being so nice after all of this, she hadn’t been anything but a burden so far that night and even the kiss to her forehead. She managed to crack a small smile as she nodded. “Well you seem to know what to do.” She said without thinking, she hadn’t seen him with another woman come to think of it or at least one she’d noticed.
Kalila felt herself curl up against Lucas seeing the nurse, glad that Lucas seemed to fix it almost immediately. “Have I gotten you in trouble here?” She said glancing around trying to work out if she was causing an issue. Her head wasnt thinking all that clearly but it didn’t change her thinking that by being here was an issue of some sort.
“Thank you.” She said with a small smile again, “I promise to be safe because I’m not doing this date thing anymore. No more at all and I’m embarrassed that they called you. I am your house room friend, I should have known better.” She said firmly knowing she was only venturing a few blocks to work and back but even that right then seemed longer than the sort walk she normally took. Even feeling him playing with her hair as she nodded again trying to calm down and stop the tears that seemed to want to keep coming. “Thank you for being here, it means a lot.” She admitted.
“And you should be home with Oliver and Chandler. I could go and look after them until you finish work?” She said trying to squint at the clock to see what the time was as she relaxed a little in his arms. It was likely the worst idea but then Kalila wasn’t really known for the common sense of life. She hadn’t really had much life practice. Kalila was trying not to be scared as she hugged Lucas, her hand trying to copy the circle motion on Lucas’s back. If it was making her feel better then she could at least try the same for him?

[attr="class","Lucasner"] [attr="class","Lucasner1"] [attr="class","Lucasback"] [attr="class","Lucasnert"]When the nurse came back in Lucas dismissed her politely. “I’ve got it Jennifer, I’ll call you if I need anything.” He offered. There were other places she could make herself useful, but he couldn’t blame her for trying to do her job. Lucas did not miss hanging around the ER but he could make an exception for a few hours. Kalila needed some stability. She was more important than his dislike for this particular wing of the hospital. “I can make a few phone calls. If he comes back, I can promise that the police will come pick him up.” That was if they didn’t pick him up before them. Lucas had every intent on explaining to Braden what happened without releasing information. What Braden did with that, Lucas didn’t want to know. It was a different game once the police got involved. Lucas would go to jail for something stupid before he let that man touch Kalila again. Lucas looked down at her and smiled. He’d seen his fair share of assaults when he worked the ER. He knew how things worked. Lucas’ hand reassuring her as his hand gently brushed over the bruise. He was checking on the swelling as he did so but he was very careful not to hurt her as he replaced the ice pack.
