Dr. Hyden Faith Prescott
PERSONALITY Hyden is best described as a mother hen and a workaholic at heart.Growing up as an Air Force brat taught her how to adapt to new environments fairly well, and since she has settled in Chicago, she has developed a close circle of friends, mostly from work. She takes her work very seriously and thinks well on her feet, but she isn’t afraid to laugh on the job or find joy in the little things. Hyden believes her medical background enhances her ability to help her clients and will prescribe medications if necessary, but she rejects the notion that psychiatrists simply prescribe, while psychologists treat. She is a fully trained therapist and believes mental health problems can be treated with a variety of methods. LIKES: Spending time with friends, good food, good TV (dramas/soaps),advocacy/political activism, chocolate. DISLIKES: Useless rules, bigotry, exercise, homelessness, throwing her weight around. GREATEST DESIRE: Hyden’s greatest fear is she will end up alone, consumed by her work. GREATEST FEAR: Hyden’s greatest fear is she will end up alone, consumed by her work. HOBBIES: Hyden loves to go to the movies and to stay at home watching a variety of TV dramas. HISTORY Hyden Faith Prescott is the only child of Roger, a retired Air Force Colonel, and Natasha, a retired registered nurse. Though she was born in the Florida Panhandle, like any other military brat, Hyden moved frequently, and though she always distinguished herself as a model student, she had a hard time making friends because just about the time she made them, it was time to move again. Consequently, Hyden was always more comfortable around adults than her peers and she matured faster as a result. Whether it was because of her childhood or her genetic inheritance, from an early age, Hyden became sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. Her mother, perhaps because Hyden was so emotionally mature, didn’t shield her from movies depicting serious issues like domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault. Naturally empathetic Hyden never forgot the emotional impact those movies made upon her and she resolved to build a career around helping survivors of trauma. She attended three high schools and three colleges, but graduated medical school summa cum laude. Her intention was to go on to become a psychiatrist immediately, but while volunteering at the local rape crisis center, she was encouraged to use her medical skills in a forensic capacity, documenting and collecting evidence from survivors of sex crimes and domestic violence. Hyden initially felt a great deal of satisfaction for her part in putting sex offenders in prison, but she longed to do something that truly helped heal survivors inside and out. With her parents’ support, Hyden completed her education in psychiatry and went on to specialize in working with survivors of trauma as a therapist and a forensic psychiatrist. Though at first Hyden had every intention to work strictly with adult trauma survivors, one of her professors encouraged her to intern at St. Nicholas, a crisis center for adult rape and domestic violence survivors and their children, to at the very least determine if the naturally maternal Hyden liked working with children. She was surprised to discover how much she enjoyed working as a physician in a non-traditional setting. Hyden is trained to work with clients who have a variety of difficulties, but she specializes in evaluating and treating children, adolescents, adults and couples who have experienced trauma. Inaddition to her work as a therapist, as a forensic psychiatrist, she has experience working as a consultant for emergency service agencies, including law enforcement and the fire service, doing everything from profiling to post-trauma evaluations. She is certified to conduct forensic medical and psychological exams, and is an experienced expert witness on psychological trauma. Her research interests include Battered Woman’s Syndrome and PTSD. Over the years, Hyden has split her time between working in hospitals and consulting with other social service and law enforcement agencies in her capacity as a forensic and trauma psychiatrist. When she learned of the opening in Chicago for someone who was comfortable wearing a number of hats, Prescott was only too happy for the challenge and the change of pace.
