|| TAG: ,|| WORDS: 0 || || NOTES: ... || Adrift. Floating without being either moored or steered and it was a feeling Harrison knew all too well. After resigning his commission with the British Royal Navy he thought it would be easier to adjust to life on land. He was ‘home’ in Chicago with his wife and daughter, what more could a guy ask for in life but Harrison found being home a struggle. At 0430 he was awake, regardless of the date or name of the day and instead of a metal ship and deck to run around on he had an entire city.
A whole none moving city, was he mad to say he was land sick? He missed the ocean, the smell of diesel and oil, the creaking parts of a ship coupled with the movement of the waves. He had been home a couple of weeks, two to be exact and Harrison was even considering asking Vanessa if she was okay with swapping out their bed for a water bed. Simply because it could move. All in all he missed the purpose of life, the reason he did what he did beyond family and income though that had never been an issue. No the Kirkwood’s had financial security but Harrison was never one to sit back and let life pass by.
It was why he was pondering his time; he felt as if he had rested already and wanted a new challenge. He had a few offers out here and there, the idea to run a security company and use the knowledge he had and then there was the charity route. Raise funds, do exactly what his family did best at times. Smile, laugh, drink and sign cheques. It was the very reason he was down at the docks, he needed time to think in an environment he could deal with.
Water, oil, fuel, boats of all kinds and the organisation of work he recognised. It was 10am, still relatively early but to him half the day had been and gone already as he leaned against the wooden guard rails that separated the dock from the water below. His mind lost in thought as he tried to work out the next phase of life before he tore the house down and started to rebuild it from scratch.

[attr="class","Victorianer"] [attr="class","Victorianer1"] [attr="class","Victoriaback"] [attr="class","Victorianert"]Victoria knew better than to know that her husband would be asleep at this hour. She knew where he would go though and so she followed at a distance, once she seen where he had gone she drove a bit of a distance, decided to get some coffee and continued her walk. SHe didn't want to attract any suspicion. Victoria had spent years following people. Right where she figured he would be. From the borrowed car, she finally got the nerve to step out and approach her husband. Not that their relationship was on the rocks, but more of they spent lots of time apart and sometimes she wasn’t always sure how to handle things that came up between them. They’d spent a good deal of their lives between the US and Britain and back and forth. She’d been lucky enough that Cross had let her go to Britain where Harrison was. But then stuff had hit the fan in Chicago and she didn’t really have much choice. They’d gone back to their marriage spanning the globe once more. As she approached, she realized just out of touch in her marriage she was. Coming up beside Harrison she decided to speak first before reaching her hand out to his shoulder so as not to spook him too much. Her one hand outstretched with a cup of his favorite tea. “Something is on your mind.” It was a statement, not a question. Victoria had always had a direct way of being blunt without being rude. Her fingers ran down Harrison’s bicep. Never once had Victoria tried to give up on her marriage but it still felt like she hardly knew the man beside her. Looping her arm through his she rested her head on the shoulder and watched the water. Sometimes it was easier to talk and cuddle than talk and make eye contact. Expressing herself wasn’t always easy. She missed him, and things were complicated and frustrating. Where did she even begin to fix this? She felt like she was the one that uprooted them to bring them here; she'd simply taken an assignment after the company boss' son had been attacked. In her mind, it was a logical conclusion. She had the training for the job, it was that simple. It wasn't one of those jobs in her department that was taken lightly. They only asked the top most qualified to fill such a role. But she'd felt that moving her and her daughter to Chicago hadn't been the wisest decision to date. Victoria forced it down. Harrison never expected a tail, being home had thrown him for six. The first few days were fantastic but when he realised that leaving to go back to the ship was never the next step. He struggled with what his feet were supposed to do next. He was used to long distance, watching their daughter grow up in pictures, facetime and phone calls. Wedding anniversaries being away or organizing flowers from the Atlantic ocean, birthday presents delayed or bought and sent three weeks too early just in case of delays. It was the life he was used to that he had left and worse still, he had no idea what his life was supposed to be.
The flip side, the outside, the civvy street that everyone talked about and now he was walking it he had no idea what he was to do with it. Did his marriage work if he was in Chicago full time and as for Chicago it was an entirely new place for him, it was far from the one weeks leave holiday destination of before. Chicago now became home and with that expectations he had no idea of. As usual Harrison never spoke about it, he kept it to himself which was a bad idea but then his brain functioned for warfare not peace time.
What if his wife liked him being in the Navy because it was his thing, what if stepping away made things fail? Maybe she found it easier when he was away or what if they were different people to when they first met. Harrison never thought his marriage was falling apart, if anything he thought it was one of the strongest around but he would never be the first to think that to be blindsided by issues. It was why he was surprised when he heard the familiar voice by his side. The statement that said she still knew him despite their globetrotting marriage.
Harrison only nodded to Victoria as he smiled in her direction before he saw the tea. The smile turned to a grin when he took the tea from her outstretched hand, his wife still knew him very well he thought. Even the touch of her fingers was home to him as he sighed. “How did you find me?” He asked though given her work it was a question he knew he could answer himself. The water, the smell, the general feel of the day and now his wife by his side the day could barely be more perfect.
Taking a sip of tea from the cup Harrison made sure to squeeze Victoria’s arm lightly with his own before leaning down a little to kiss the top of her head. “So how is work going these days?” He asked deciding that work was the very thing he was trying to work out himself, though talking it through he had no idea if Victoria wanted to hear his idea or what her thoughts were about him being home for good. “And on a side note, are you free for dinner tonight?” He asked politely and almost formerly, doing what he did best. Turn to what he knew which was chivalry and manners and since he was home the least he could do was treat his wife to dinner and in such maybe start to work out the dynamic or land dynamic of their relationship.

[attr="class","Victorianer"] [attr="class","Victorianer1"] [attr="class","Victoriaback"] [attr="class","Victorianert"]Victoria’s midwestern accent was starting to grow but her Italian roots weren’t forgotten in her accent. “It wasn’t hard.” No, it’s what she did for a living, tracked people down. “This is one of your favorite spots to come and think, is it not?” She added as she watched over the water in the bay. Though she wasn’t going to admit that she too came here on occasion just to get thoughts out. Why did he always ask about work? Victoria couldn’t talk about that. “You know we can’t talk about it more than just know that I am doing well there.” Sometimes she stayed over at the Cross household overnight since their shifts were so long in rotation. Now that there were usually four of them on shift it was nice to get in her sleep at work too. They all traded off, leaving three of them awake at a minimum but they all got some sleep on duty. Victoria spit out the question that always loomed over them every time they saw each other. “How long are you staying?” Mostly it was to tweak Cameron’s arm into seeing how much time she could arrange off while Harrison was here. It was hit or miss, and sometimes just depended on how many shifts she could find for people to cover for her, but she always did the same for them if they needed the time so it worked. Sometimes the whole chivalry thing was beyond her, then again he didn’t know her schedule and he was just being polite so she let it go. “Yeah I have today and tomorrow off.” One day on, two days off; just like the fire department. Harrison should have known better to ask her though given he was that predictable, it might be a thing to change in the future given he made a living from planning strategy on just that same reasoning. “You’re right, just watching the waves, hearing the water and the smell of a harbour. I guess I’m just predictable that way.” He added smiling not minding one bit that his wife knew where he liked to spend his time. It was always easier to think by the ocean, the way it washed clean the earth twice a day like clockwork and despite its appearance it could break a ship in two without a thought.
It had a destructive beauty to it and one he never failed to appreciate. Even as the talk turned to work, he was used to not saying much about work other than the basic and more to do with ship gossip than his day to day. He knew there was little to know from Victoria either however he felt it only right to ask her. “You doing well there is all I need to know, if you’re happy there then I’m happy for you.” He explained, it was the one thing Harrison never wanted to do, to have Victoria doing something she despised. If she enjoyed her job then it was good enough for him.
The list of questions that were asked continued, the one question he had known was to be asked but how to answer it and the reaction to his answer. It was one of those questions in life that meant he had made a choice and done the right thing or he had just ruined everything and he was unaware of it (at least just yet). “How long depends on you.” Harrison began smiling for a moment deciding to just leave that there for a moment when he heard she had tomorrow off.
It was good to have her around for two days; he knew his leave could be a pain between her job and his. The time off, the trying to schedule everything so they could make the most of their time and the occasions where he could be home and see Victoria in a morning and night and nothing in between. Funny how life worked at times. “That’s great news.” He added smiling, “Because I can stay as long as you’ll let me. I made the choice to leave the Royal Navy and come home full time.” He added as he squeezed Victoria’s arm lightly for a moment unsure of her reaction to that.
There was no money issue surrounding the choice, between the Navy and the family they had little to nothing to worry over that way if both of them retired in that second. Likely the grandkids would have no issues either but he knew that was never a problem. What if in being home for good broke what they had together, Victoria had moved on and he just never realised it or his wife or daughter had a problem in him being there all the time. Being used to one way of working, absent most of the time he could see the reasoning behind things he just hoped he was trying to reason an issue that was in his own head and no one else’s.

[attr="class","Victorianer"] [attr="class","Victorianer1"] [attr="class","Victoriaback"] [attr="class","Victorianert"]Victoria didn’t mind that her husband was easy to find. In fact, she appreciated it sometimes. Certain things like that in her marriage gave her something where she could relate to him and connect. How they’d managed so many years apart was beyond her but it was a lot of effort. She came up beside him and snuggled into his arm. She missed this. Victoria chuckled. “I’ve never stuck with anything where I haven’t been happy.” There was an assurance in her voice. A confidence that she was going to make sure her life was as she wanted it to be. No one had stopped her at it before. “Overall, I wouldn’t trade it.” That didn’t mean there weren’t some days that were a struggle. Her job paid well, but it also required her to be on her toes a lot. There was confusion at least until he cleared up the fact that he left the Royal Navy. “I’m glad you are home.” It would be a transition period for everyone. So used to the coming and going in their marriage. To not have that would be a blessing but at the same time, she knew things wouldn’t just click into place overnight. There would be the usual lovers quarrels that most couples had she was sure. In that minute, Victoria unsnuggled from his arm and leaned her back against the railing of the dock, pulling him towards her. Reaching a hand up to his face, she could tell he was lost deep in thought. “Something is on your mind. You wouldn’t be here and you wouldn’t have that look on your face.” Oh she knew he needed to talk. “Talk to me?” She phrased it as a question. They could talk for the ages while they were oceans apart; but would the same be true of face to face? Having Victoria on his arm, just being close to her even in the same country was a bonus but when she snuggled into his arm. Harrison felt like he was home, it was one of the greatest feelings in the world and all that time away. He really, truly missed moments like that. He was used to being so far away, a phone call when he could or email was never the same as being right there beside the person you loved more than anything in the world.
“I know but at least now I can hear and see you say it all at the same time.” Harrison said with a smile, he now had no plans on dissecting a conversation over a phone. Trying to work out what tone meant what. Now he could see her say she was happy and that was all he needed to know. “Overall, so tell me what are the less great parts then?” He asked wondering if she wanted to go through that or at least talk it all over.
Harrison was relieved to hear Victoria was glad he was home, that was one of two people he needed that opinion from. Coming home was never going to be an easy transition; he had talked many a crew member on his ship through the same thing. Home for a week or two every now and again was different to being there for months on end trying to adjust to a world that had little regiment or reason. A life that so far he knew little of but one his wife and daughter knew a lot about.
He was trying to think about what to say, it was different than talking for hours on a phone and never having enough time to get to that next question or find out what was going on. Even the mundane how did that load of washing go became interesting to him because he was hardly ever there to know about it. Watching Victoria lean back against the railings of the dock as he pressed himself against her lightly before her slid his arms around her. The heat of her hand against his face was nice as he leaned into it. “You know me too well.” He said softly not knowing how things would be now he was back.
Harrison raised his hand brushing his thumb against her lips for a moment wanting to take in every detail of her face. Even though he was home for good he could never tire of her at all. “Do you think we can still work?” Harrison asked, it was open ended but he hoped Victoria would understand what he meant. “Me being here full time, do you think we can be us still? That we won’t turn into that couple that doesn’t talk or just can’t function in the same place? And then there’s Elizabeth, what if she doesn’t like me being here? I don’t know the rules for this and I don’t want to screw it up for either of you.” Harrison tried to explain.
There was no black and white just a whole load of grey as far as he could see. He was stepping back into their lives full time, not just a week or two or a holiday here and there. No visitor’s week aboard the ship or docking at port. Harrison was stepping into their world again and trying not to make waves as he did so.

[attr="class","Victorianer"] [attr="class","Victorianer1"] [attr="class","Victoriaback"] [attr="class","Victorianert"]Victoria just gave Harrison a look. ”Can’t you just enjoy this.” Did he have to nitpick at every word she’d said? Then he wondered why half the time she decided just not to open her mouth, or talk via some long distance communications. There were just somethings that should be left well enough alone. She was happy, so couldn’t he just let it go? Victoria knew well about adjusting to the civilian life, it wasn’t easy but she knew it was the best decision for her family at the time. Their daughter knew her dad from a computer screen and the rare visits. Part of that broke Victoria. Though she was sure that he’d be welcomed with open arms. Their daughter adored her dad. Victoria smiled when he said she knew him too well. “That’s my life mission, to keep you happy.” She replied kissing the his thumb that came across her lips. Though his question she gave him a puzzled expression. He worried too much. “Harrison, for better for worse we are in this together.” She could understand the hesitancy but deep down it fed her own insecurities. Was she not good enough for him suddenly? She just wanted things to be normal. Was that so much to really ask for? Victoria wanted to ask it but didn’t want to say it. No, she didn’t want him to feel like he couldn’t adjust. Maybe this was just his way of dealing with things? She could overlook it for a bit perhaps. Though she had no idea where all this self doubt had come from around her. For such a confident person he was… going backwards. [attr="class","Victorianer2"] [attr="class","Victorianerlyric"]I've jumped all the fences Abandoned all the rules

Harrison smiled and nodded to her, he was used to having to dissect a conversation over the phone. The tone of it, was she worried, upset, what was the day like and was something getting at her. In person was far easier to see but old habits and all. “Sure I can just enjoy this, I mean I get to enjoy a lot of time with you now I’m actually here.” Harrison said smiling, even seeing her happy meant the world to him given everything she had done and given up for the two of them.
The adjustment he had no idea about, he could talk people through it and say all the right things but the practical side. He was still waiting for the other shoe to drop, the phone call to say time is up no more leave or that leave was ending early because another officer managed to catch flu. He knew the drill, leave was never leave. A few days here and there a week or two if he was lucky but now, now he had all the time in the world and he was waiting for the bite back. The phone call, the ‘anything but what you’re doing’ message to come through.
“Mine too you know but it’s easier now I get to be in the same place.” He added feeling the kiss to his thumb as he relaxed a little until he saw that puzzled expression. Go figured he had just said the wrong thing, his marriage was far from a battle plan as it could get and he was used to a long distance marriage. A long distance dad on screens and telephones, hearing about a project but never being able to sit down and complete it with his daughter.
Harrison wrapped his arms around Victoria as he held her, finally able to do that and it never got old each and every time he did. “You know something, you’re perfect and far too good for me. For better for worse, I just love that you are here with me.” He said smiling as he kissed her cheek. “I’m also going to buy a boat and name it after my favourite lady in the world. The Lady Victoria.” He added, “That way we can go sailing, take off for the weekend and renew our vows in Bali or some exotic island. So Mrs. Kirkwood, I would like to know if you’d marry me a second time?” He asked practically beaming at her, so he came up with ideas at times that were a little out there but then maybe it was diesel fumes that had gone to his head.
Either way if he got to marry the woman of his dreams twice over, what more could he ask for in life? By his thinking there was little if anything. If she said yes then he could work out a second ring later with all the spare time he had while she was working and maybe enlist their daughter to help out with a surprise of some kind.
