[attr="class","Jafarner"] [attr="class","Jafarner1"] [attr="class","Jafarback"] [attr="class","Jafarnert"] There were bodies. Bodies everywhere. Five had ambushed Jafar and in return lay dead around him. The other three bodies lay where Shaahir had killed them. None of the bodies were pretty. Multiple knifes and blood lay strewn about. Jafar's side was bleeding heavily but had slowed since Shaahir had wrapped it. He had also taken a really good smack to the head with something. At least no one had shot anyone. There was that. Jafar had failed. If Shaahir took his anger out on him later, the maimed security agent would understand. Saajida has been abducted and only two calls had been made. One to Tareq and one to the ambulance. He lay on the ground bandaged up by Shaahir only enough to keep him from bleeding out. Jafar needed his strength, if he was going to find his principal. The one he had lost. Jafar and failure mixed like oil and water. Hearing sirens in the distance, he almost wished Shaahir would just have let him die. It was no more than he deserved for losing Saajida. His half sister abducted (though only Shaahir knew the truth) and an off grid diplomat. He laid on the ground and tried to make heads or tails of the voices he heard around him. “Shani, His pulse is strong but slower than normal. And call the ME we got bodies.” As if things couldn’t get any worse he could have sworn this woman was calling for a Shani. His Shani was a paramedic, the irony while hilarious to most anyone else, was irritating to him. Maybe he was overthinking this? Not like he had anything better to do; he’d already hung up with Tareq. No, this was quite possible just a coincidence. Or a huge nightmare, yeah nightmare sounded good. Jafar felt skilled hands fix his wound coverings. It was painful and he gritted through his teeth. Hissing every other word in Arabic and letting even some Spanish curse words slip. “You need to be still.” Whomever this was, she was too soft spoken to back up her commands. Jafar needed to get up and get to Shaahir and Saajida before someone got themselves killed. A call with more bodies than they had room for. Great just what she wanted to get elbow deep into on shift, what happened to the stubbed toe calls or the, I tripped and scraped my knee. It was a sight she had seen before but then Shani had been around a battlefield, a home ground battle field and worked as a paramedic long enough to have seen too much. Yes the little things could surprise her but this was just another day in Chicago as terrifying as that was to admit to anyone.
Shani was grabbing the kit from the ambulance specifically the tags to tell the others who where there who to use their time on. Three men were slightly off from where Beth was treating someone, Shani kept her eyes focused on the ones in front of her but by the time she had finished there was nothing that could be done for them. It was the worst call she had seen for a while, objects sticking out of places that she could only assume was torture. Wounds that no one could survive. It was a call she wished Beth never had to see though maybe her live patient could shed some light.
Though Shani made sure to keep a watch on the woman just in case. A live patients with this much damage, either they were a victim but that meant that they had some pretty unique skills. Skills that were not used for the living right about now. Gangland violence or just a dispute over a parking space though when Shani heard Beth talk about her patient she decided to go over and take a look.
After all working on the dead did nothing for her; she would be no use to them as she reached for the radio and called it in for the M.E. to attend the scene as well. “Make sure you have a big enough van, thinking you’ll have a very busy afternoon here.” Shani added over the radio before she grabbed her kit and moved to help Beth. “M.E. will be here as soon as and Beth be carefu...” Shani stated. It never occurred to Shani that she might know someone at this scene, not once did it cross her mind until the patients face came into view as Beth tried to keep the man still.
Shani froze for a moment gazing down at Jafar. He was hurt, her eyes started to take in the blood that surrounded him as she gasped loudly. “Jafar.” She spluttered, “No, no, no, no Jafar. Stay with us.” She almost shrieked forgetting almost everything she had been trained to do. Never be emotional, never get too involved, never shriek and never let a game face fall. She had lost on almost every count there was. Still Shani knew Jafar was moving too much to work on him as Shani glared, Beth might not be able to back up her commands just yet but she sure as hell could. “Stay down and be still.” Shani barked putting all her worry and anger at the person or persons who had done this into those few words.
“Don’t make me pin you to the ground. You know I will and can.” Shani warned him, sure he might be a cute little furry seal from Sea World but she had martial arts training. Israeli army and she was determined, that and he was injured so the luck was on her side. There was no doubt that she meant it as she dropped her bag and fell to her knees beside him, letting Beth work. “Jafar, what happened? You’ll be okay, just look at me and talk.” Shani said a little more aggressively than she might have liked though her touch was caring as she placed her hand on the side of his cheek. Her thumb brushed lightly against his cheek while the other hand pressed on his shoulder to keep him still so Beth could work.

[attr="class","Jafarner"] [attr="class","Jafarner1"] [attr="class","Jafarback"] [attr="class","Jafarnert"]The voice… it was unmistakable. Shit, “Shani…” his voice was weak. He needed to know that Saajida and Shaahir were alright but there wasn’t anything he could do. “Call FBI, I need to talk to them.” No, he couldn’t tell her what happened here. It was part of his job not to tell and to protect his principals at all times. He’d failed they were out of his sight and Saajida had been abducted. She wanted him to talk but he couldn’t tell her anything. Nor was he going to do so. He could feel Shani putting the pressure on the wound and he growled. He’d been stabbed and she was putting pressure on the one place that hurt. He couldn’t deny that he wanted to be anywhere but here. “I broke the handle off, the blade is still in there.” Yeah well it was better to inform her of what was going on with her medically. That was a conversation he could have. No, he wasn’t going to shed light into why the others were dead. Not that anyone could do anything about Shaahir with his diplomatic immunity but he was hardly going to hang his brother in law out to dry like that. Shani hated to hear his voice that weak, Jafar was by no means weak in any way. Even seeing him hurt, to her he was an absolute super hero and yes she might be foolish for putting him on that sort of pedestal but he was right up there in her mind. Sitting alongside most if not all of those marvel and DC movies she was trying to swat up on for the sake of her son. “Right here Jafar.” She replied before giving him a look that said he was crazy.
“So you just assume that I have the FBI on speed dial?” Shani replied sarcastically, "Who do you think I am?" Oh there was no way she was calling anyone right now other than another ambulance or Chicago Med to make sure they had everything on standby for him. “No you need to focus on you right now. The FBI can wait Jafar.” Shani stated firmly, whatever had happened there she knew she would never know or understand but right then her priority was Jafar and making sure he stayed alive. Unlike those who were on the ground around them.
Hurting him, could he make her feel anymore guilty for doing her job she thought hearing the growl he emitted when she pressed on the wound. Shani was about to ask about the broken handle when she removed the pressure she had put there immediately. “In future, you lead with that sort of information. It's important.” Shani snapped before replacing the pressure around the wound and not directly on top of it. A small piece of information that might have prevented her from sticking him with a knife blade any further.
“Jafar, I want you to listen to me.” Shani said taking a breath, “I need to know, are you allergic to anything? Is there anything in your medical history I need to know about.” Well it was worth asking the questions in case he had a case of organs on the wrong side, allergies to medications and the whole range of other things that could go wrong. “And keep talking to me because I’ve had an idea about going somewhere nice, just me and you one night.” Shani said deciding that she could at least try and keep him talking in any way she knew how. Planning an evening out well it made sense given that she knew he would need surgery to get rid of the blade inside him.

[attr="class","Jafarner"] [attr="class","Jafarner1"] [attr="class","Jafarback"] [attr="class","Jafarnert"]Jafar was fine until she said he need to focus on him. Everything else went out the window. “My sister was just abducted” His eyes pierced as much as they could. “No is not the appropriate response.” He pushed back against Shani. There was a fight in him it was stronger than his body was. She started chastising him for not telling him about the blade in his side and he wasn’t listening. At this point, everything was going in one ear and out the other. “I want the FBI, and I want them NOW” she used his strength to emphasis the last words. There was a hiss as she moved the pressure from one side to the other. Then she told him to listen. “I’m not answering anything. My father is about to kill my sister and so help me if she dies it’s going to be your hands that have blood on them if you don’t help me.” Jafar was persistent and belligerent. He wanted to believe that taking Shani out somewhere nice was somewhere in the cards but that wasn’t the reality right now. The reality was he had been stabbed, was losing blood, and somewhere out there his brother-in-law was probably killing anyone standing in the way of him finding Saajida. No, he couldn’t think about nice dinner dates. The reality was Jafar didn’t want anyone’s medical help right now. He laid his head down and it landed on Beth’s lap. “Bevakasha, ishah eyn davar hayah kama” (Please she doesn’t have long) He been expending so much energy that he closed his eyes though he was still conscious. Beth hooked the IV and was busy prepping him so they could move him. There wasn’t much she could do other than her job right now. Though she was worried about her partner. Jafar could even hear the worry in the younger female’s voice. [attr="class","Jafarner2"] [attr="class","Jafarnerlyric"]اسمحوا لي أن أراك من خلال، ا "السبب رأيت الجانب المظلم جد

Shani just stared right back at Jafar, she tried to keep the look of absolute indifference though at the mention of his sister. Okay so he won that stare out. Shani had lost her sister and would have given anything to get her back, she hardly wanted the same thing for Jafar. “No is the appropriate response because I am not a mind reader Jafar.” Shani stated trying to keep him still for his sake, no if he wanted to make things worse then fine but it was her neck on the line for losing a patients and he was a very important one. “And I want you to be in the hospital getting medical treatment NOW! But we cannot always get what we want in life.” Shani stated emphasising the Now just as much as he did.
Why was he being so stubborn about this she thought taking a breath before she snapped at him. She wanted to shake him to wake him up to the reality but then could he feel no pain in his side? The hiss told her otherwise but he was in no shape to deal with the FBI or start chasing after people at all. His father killing his sister and then her blood was on her hands, oh he had to be delirious to start saying that to her she thought glaring at him.
Shani bit her lip hard though it only lasted so long as she saw him lay his head down on Beth’s lap. “Ani Lo Mevin Otcha” (I do not understand you) Shani sighed adding a few choice expletives in at the end as she reached for her phone forgetting about the blood that covered her gloved hand as she stared for a moment as she tried to swipe the screen on her phone. “Ei, Gut” (Great just great) She muttered before deciding to glare at Jafar. “You do not get to close your eyes on me Jafar. Fight it I know you can. You see this?” Shani asked waving her blood covered gloved hand in front of his face. She had seen a lot in her time the blood of someone she cared about was always enough to turn her stomach into knots.
“It’s your blood I have on my hands right now, is that not good enough for you? I’m trying to save your life here because you’re no good to your sister or boss if you’re no longer here.” Shani almost yelled though it was entirely out of fear and worry for him than from anything he said. Shani could hear Roxi on the other end of her phone as she rattled off information to pass onto the FBI about Jafar, the Palestinian diplomat and his missing sister. Even what he said about his father being the culprit as Roxi promptly hung up the phone.
She had faith the woman would rope every FBI contact she had into this though right now Shani was barely bothered about it. “Now the FBI is involved but you need to talk to me Jafar because I swear if you leave I will bring you back just to kick your ass so hard a second time and believe me. I’ll do more damage than these guys.” Shani warned him glancing at Beth, she had never been worried about doing her job up until that day. When it was a stranger she could handle things a lot easier than she did now.
“On three do you do think we can get him onto the board and the stretcher and get him out of here?” Shani asked wanting a second opinion on what she was doing simply because she knew her judgement might not be completely sound as she shoved her phone in her pocket still blood smeared. Just another thing she needed to clean up she thought.

[attr="class","Jafarner"] [attr="class","Jafarner1"] [attr="class","Jafarback"] [attr="class","Jafarnert"]Jafar simply glared at Shani for her outburst back at him. No, it didn’t matter if something happened to him. All that mattered was that Saajida was safe. “Saajida. She’s in trouble.” He kept repeating it. He could hear Shani yelling but hardly gave it much attention. If it was attention she was seeking there was no point in feeding her anything else. Nothing else at this point mattered. He’d probably already said to much and he was feeling weaker. As long as he got someone after Shaahir before he did something stupid since he’d left his own detail much earlier, that left Jafar in charge of his security too now dammit. Beth nodded at her partner when Shani mentioned moving Jafar. “Yelling won’t help Shani. I need your help to move him. On three. One, two, three.” She waited to make sure she had Shani’s attention. Beth was worried about her partner. Beth also managed to get an IV in among other things. “He’s gonna be alright.” Beth was being positive. Once they had Jafar loaded up Beth put a hand on Shani’s shoulder before jumping down. “You want me to drive?” She thought she’d offer, depending on how much Shani trusted herself. How much Shani trusted her own judgment right now for Jafar’s treatment could mean the difference between life and death and Beth knew it. Beth wasn’t exactly going to come out and ask her if she trusted herself so she’d been more discreet about it. Beth was not always the most blunt person to deal with. The woman liked to talk her way around everything. [attr="class","Jafarner2"] [attr="class","Jafarnerlyric"]اسمحوا لي أن أراك من خلال، ا "السبب رأيت الجانب المظلم جد

Shani had never wanted to slap a man as much in her life, Jafar was pushing her buttons with that glare of his and it was all too plainly obvious that yelling at him had no effect. “I know you’ve told me that, I’ve called the FBI and they will help Jafar.” Shani stated repeating her general activities of the last five minutes. “You cannot help Saajida like this, let us help you so you can go and be her hero later.” Shani suggested trying to do the reverse psychology that seemed to work on the kids. A man was practically a child, it was the one piece of advice from her mother than she had known to be true.
Men were just big kids and although it was tough to see Jafar as a child, trying to give him something good and boost his ego a little while getting her own way. It was worth a try if he would just listen to her. Second piece of wisdom, men never listen. Also proven time and time again she thought as Beth spoke about moving Jafar. It was like being on auto pilot, the same manoeuvre she had preformed a thousand times but that nod to Beth, the count and then the lift, it all just felt like going through the motions right now.
Shani tried to smile hearing Beth being positive, she could barely catch the almost half hearted laugh that went along with it. “Sure he will be, he has the best medic service in the city.” She joked though Shani knew she was behind on all things medical right now as she stood holding the door to the back of the ambulance. “Drive... oh urm yes please, I don’t think I’d do that well right now.” Shani said not entirely sure she could keep them on the road and not crash. Fishing in her pocket for the keys Shani passed them to Beth.
“Thank you.” Shani almost whispered to her shaking herself for a moment before she seemed to snap out of the haze. “Just another uncooperative patient we have today. I got this.” Shani stated trying to convince Beth as much as herself of that. Shani felt her face fall in line too, the annoyed and no crap stare she would have with anyone else came back as fast as it had left. If Jafar wanted to do this then he could get the gold star treatment, an annoyed Israeli treating a Palestinian. In some thread of it had to make sense she told herself hopping up into the back with Jafar.
“Welcome to Ambulance 58 Mr. Cabrera, two rules you need to know. Don’t annoy my partner and do exactly what I say no arguing.” Shani stated barely even looking at Jafar other than trying to stop the bleeding from his injuries. If she happened to poke a sore spot or two so be it, even if her hand might had meant to make that slight jab to make sure he still could feel something. Her head was dealing with an uncooperative patient who was required to know exactly who was in charge and Jafar was hardly going to get away with glaring at her.

[attr="class","Jafarner"] [attr="class","Jafarner1"] [attr="class","Jafarback"] [attr="class","Jafarnert"]Most everything that Shani said went in one ear and out the other. A complete blur, he passed out in the back of the ambulance enroute to med and while he was stable he was going to be out of it for more than just a few hours. His body needed the rest to recoup the blood loss. He had no idea how much time had passed but he started batting his eyelids and woke up in the ICU. Saajida and Shani were the fresh faces in his mind. Where were they? He shot up as fast as his body would let them and his breathing rate increased. In his mind, Shani had also been taken. He was still slightly delirious from having woken up with no memory of what really happened. No, he needed to see them. To see Shani and know that Saajida was safe. He reached for his phone. Hoping for a message. There was a text that Saajida was secure and in an undisclosed location and alive. That’s all he needed to know. He put his head in his hands. What about Shani… she’d been there too. He felt confused, no he’d seen Shani in the middle of the mess. She was mad at him. Great, just what he needed the woman he cared about mad at him. There were few people Shani could lose her mind over but Jafar was one of them. She was a medic first and foremost however that took shape and right then it was watching over a passed out Jafar in the back of an ambulance. The hospital was a blur though the doctor barely needed to explain the amount of time he would need sleep and rest. Shani pulled herself off shift for the day asking Gabby to cover for her which was fine. Even the stay at the hospital was a long one as she paced and pace inside his room.
Waiting for that one moment. Shani had stepped out to get a coffee, the very thing she needed to at least calm her down in any way possible. She was heading back with the small paper cup in her hand when she saw Jafar sit up. Shani soon forgot about the coffee she had, slamming the cup down onto the desk as the nurses’ station as she ran back into his room. Cursing herself in Hebrew for leaving him along for two minutes. She was at the door when she watched Jafar pick up his phone, she could read the monitors and the one thing he should never doing was sitting up and trying to do whatever it was he was thinking about.
“Jafar, stop.” Shani said not sure if she wanted to yell at him still or just hug him to death because he was alive and awake. She had never heard him speak to her like he had but now, she was simply glad to see him alive. Despite seeing his head in his hands as she reached out for him. Perching herself on the edge of the bed, Shani reached for Jafar’s hand wondering if he would let her take it. “It’s okay, the FBI was called and you’re safe here. Just rest and lay back. You need to rest and do not make me force you to.” She said in a softer than usual tone. She could be made in about five minutes and chew his ear off then rather than right that second.

[attr="class","Jafarner"] [attr="class","Jafarner1"] [attr="class","Jafarback"] [attr="class","Jafarnert"]Jafar didn't want to do more than find out if his sister was okay. Hearing Shani telling him to stop he glared in her direction. “If it was your sister you would not be telling me to stop.” He stated firmly. Jafar didn't take crap and when he was feeling better he certainly had more to say on matters. His father had been responsible for the death of Fatima his other half sister, and now Saajida's life was likely next. No, she was safe. Saajida was safe and Shani was right there in front of him. What was going on? “You cannot force someone to rest Shani.” He took her hand and gently played with it in his own. “Someone tried to kill Saajida. I know too much and that makes you not safe.” He held his side so he could sit up and get comfortable. He reached his other hand up to her face. “I want you to be careful. Just promise me.” He wasn't going to tell her not to do something. Usually he would be more authoritative but right now he didn't have the strength to argue with her. Jafar would never forgive himself if Nadir came after Shani. If Nadir ever found out that he was friends with an Israeli. ”I love you.” he blurted it out before he even realized what he was trying to say. ”Nadir will stop at nothing to get what he wants, you aren't safe.” He didn't need to add in the fact that her children weren't safe either. Nadir had killed his own daughter, he wouldn't think twice about killing someone else's child. Jafar couldn't explain the half of it to Shani, it was far too complicated. Could there have been anything worse a person could say to her? Had he any idea how much it hurt for anything to be mentioned about her sister. In truth if it was her sisters there would be nothing that would stop her, she would have been having the same conversation but somehow it was different. “You’re right, if it was my sister I would never listen to you but the difference is my sister is dead. Yours isn’t. Your sister is safe and it’s against medical advice that you do anything other than stop this madness.” Shani snapped back knowing that it would likely do no good but still she had a point to make.
Shani almost smirked at the idea she was unable to force him to rest. “Trust me, I haven’t even started yet.” Shani stated though her smile was genuine when he took her hand in his, if he wanted her to fight him over rest she would have no issue with it at all. Hearing about Saajida, Shani had to wonder if it was ramblings of painkillers that him he worried as she leaned into his touch against her face. “I’ll be careful Jafar, you just promise me the same.” Shani asked deciding to yell at him for being reckless right now was hardly the best idea she had.
Shani brought her hand carefully against Jafar’s cheek for a moment when she heard those blurted words. Her thumb brushed against his cheek slowly for a moment. Those three words that had her staring at him for a moment, she tried to rationalise it in her own mind. It was the painkillers; he had no idea what he was saying. “I love you too.” Shani said meaning every word though if tomorrow he had no clue what he had said, she had no clue what she would do. No today was what mattered and tomorrow was a new day. “I’m safe Jafar, I’ll watch out for Nadir and I’ll watch your back too.” Shani said smiling lightly; she could hardly deny that she was a little worried about the wellbeing of her family.
Family that included Jafar given she had lost her American husband and Jafar was the closest thing in the state she had to family beyond her children. “We can worry about Nadir later but as best I can, I won’t let him hurt you. Trust me to know how to watch my own back and decide if it’s safe or not.” She said smiling, it might not be safe or make sense in any definition of the word but she did love him.

[attr="class","Jafarner"] [attr="class","Jafarner1"] [attr="class","Jafarback"] [attr="class","Jafarnert"]Jafar didn't know about her siblings, they'd never really talked about them before and once she snapped her just sighed. Yeah, like he was supposed to know about a sister she never talked about. “Nadir murdered my other sister, because she wore American clothes. Wanted to break from tradition. I don't want him anywhere near you Shani. Please.” He decided he might as well explain what was going on with the crazy side of the family. His mother's side was nice and quiet, no crazy drama. Jafar was protective, sanity wasn't really an option when you were trying to save someone's life. He caressed her thumb with his cheek as she spoke. How was he supposed to express what he was trying to say? These pain killers were making his brain fuzzy and so he couldn't really say what he wanted to say properly. “Marry me Shani.” Okay so it could have been a little less blurted out but that didn't change the way he felt. It wasn't exactly the most romantic place and it was a far cry from the romantic that Jafar could be. Actually, when he got out of the hospital he owed her a night out. A nice night out, and not the cheesy dinner and a movie types either. Then she was going on about watching her own back. “You are stubborn, but you aren't the only one watching your back Shani and you know it. That won't change.” She had her three children to look after, Also something Jafar was willing to jump into, being a father to her two children. Jafar pulled Shani to him and wrapped an arm around her waist. [attr="class","Jafarner2"] [attr="class","Jafarnerlyric"]اسمحوا لي أن أراك من خلال، ا "السبب رأيت الجانب المظلم جد

It made sense once Jafar told her about Nadir, the entirely over protective male syndrome made sense to her now. “I will not go near him and he will not go near me. I’ve lived in America since college, I was about twenty one so yes I wear American clothes but I do not forget where I am from.” Shani added though given she was essentially talking to a Palestinian, it was likely not the best thing she could say. “I’ll make sure to stay clear of him if you do too.” Shani offered not wanting Jafar to go anywhere near Nadir either.
The man was obviously trouble and the last thing he needed was more trouble given the reason he was in hospital. Her job was tough enough without wondering if Jafar was on the end of the call. Shani smiled feeling his cheek against her thumb, he was alive which matter more to her than most other things she could think of. Shani was a very blunt person but the marry me question, her brow furrowed for a moment before she smiled. The wide happy smile as she nodded wondering if Jafar would even remember it once the painkillers wore off. “I do, I will. I’ll marry you Jafar.” She said, still stunned from the blurted proposal.
The words about being stubborn gave her a sense of pride he at least knew she was. “I know I’m not the only one but you should know the exact same. You’re not the only one watching your back either and it will never change. Shani felt Jafar pull her to him as she smiled, fighting a chuckle as she felt his arm around her waist. “You’re just as stubborn as I am, more so even but you’re not on your own with anything. If you want to be family then I get to watch your back more so than now.” She added as she tried her best not to throw herself at Jafar. Instead she leaned over him, careful not to hurt him as she kissed is lips carefully.

[attr="class","Jafarner"] [attr="class","Jafarner1"] [attr="class","Jafarback"] [attr="class","Jafarnert"]Jafar couldn’t make that promise to Shani. Nadir was going to die, likely at the hands of the palestinian intelligence agency but no one had to know. If they didn’t handle him then he was fairly certain Shaahir would have some part in it. Playing with Saajida was dangerous business. Though Jafar would make sure that Shani was equally as protected, especially from men like Nadir. He let Shani go on her rant and didn’t respond. Mostly because he wasn’t one for making promises that he didn’t keep but he also didn’t want her going digging up Nadir either. Jafar could only smile hearing a yes on the other side. Sure it meant taking on a wife and a few kids but that was just part of it and he knew it. “There is that smile that I have been waiting to see all day.” He returned her kiss and just let her ramble. There was no point in arguing but there was also no point in telling her that things didn’t work like that. Oh, she was going to have a lot of getting used to and he was going to show her the ropes about how things worked. He was a bodyguard, that didn’t exactly ever take time off. It was instincts and training that were always with you. ∵ Shani McGuire ∵ I started this post then zoned out, came back and didn't remember where my train of thought ran off to. Sorry it's short.
