Post by Kalila Al-Hasan on Feb 4, 2018 22:49:51 GMT
Kalila was terrified, the life she thought was stable enough had just fallen to pieces in front of her eyes. Saajida’s father had threatened them and now, she had no place to go. Kalila hated to be a bother to people so she had done the only thing she knew to do, it was to leave the Al-Hassan family and leave there and then. Sure she had enough for a hotel room for a few nights but then Chicago was a new place to her. She hadn’t a clue how the world worked exactly as her only knowledge of it had come from Shaahir and Saajida that now she was scared to even ask for help from.
The last thing she wanted was for either of them to be hurt and so she had decided she needed some time to think. Kalila had seen what Americans did to think, they went to a bar so that was where she had gone. Her duffle bag that had practically her life in it and her money from her pay packet that week for the vets where she worked. It would take her at least another few years to become a qualified veterinary nurse but in the mean time she studied and worked as a receptionist for them. Helping out where she could and learning as she did.
Kalila wasnt really a drinker at all, so when she ordered whiskey and downed in it one she could feel it burn the her throat as she coughed and spluttered at the bar for a moment. Yeah not her wisest choice but then the minute she ordered the second whiskey she was hoping it would make her choices a lot clearer. After all two seemed to be about the right amount before the thought of genius would hit her. Like it had in the movies she had seen. This time though she sipped on the drink as she could feel the sensation of warmth coursing through her from the first drink.

[attr="class","Lucasner"] [attr="class","Lucasner1"] [attr="class","Lucasback"] [attr="class","Lucasnert"] Lucas was pretty certain the girl at the bar was Arabic. He was smart enough to figure things out for himself. Not that he was angry against them or anything, more cultured. University would do that a person. Lucas had 3 drinks down in front of him and was working on his 4th when he spotted the woman. She looked troubled. Then again, didn’t just about everyone who wasn’t partying here? Lucas decided to take a seat close to her. If anything drinking alone could be dangerous for a woman, she didn’t exactly scream ‘I will put you on the floor for looking at me funny’ either. “Take it easy on the shots. If you are gonna drink alone, we don’t need you falling out on the floor.” He put an arm out behind her to steady her. “Forgive my manners Ms… “ he was fumbling for a name. “I’m Lucas” Yeah, he could tell her that he was a doctor or whatever but she wasn’t trying to look like the egotistical jerk that he could be most of the time. No, he was trying to help and gloating about a doctoral degree wasn’t exactly the modus operandi here. One thing about hanging around in the bar was that he knew the bartender. He sliced his hand across his throat and pointed to Kalila. The sign that he was cutting her off. No, if she had anymore then he was going to be carrying her to a hospital. Probably not the way she’d planned for her night to go. “Let me get you home? I’ll call you a cab.” No he didn’t want her to get the wrong idea. It wasn’t like that, he wanted her to get home safe. Yes, some could say he was willing to look out for the occasional ‘stray’ as people called it. [googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WHY CAN'T I BREATHE whenever I think of you Kalila at the age of twenty one had very little actual life experience. Yes she had been married, kind of but then that was about as experienced as she was. It was why she wasnt shoving the guy who had come to sit by her away and running for the door. “I can hold my drink thank you very much.” Kalila said though this was her first real taste of alcohol beyond anything at the dinner table and that wasnt taken with as much enthusiasm as she was showing now toward a shot. Whatever that was but it looked like what people drank as she felt his arm steady her. "Thank you." She said politely smiling in the practiced way she had been taught. There was a reason she never attended any events with Shaahir, safer to leave her at home just in case she said something less than diplomatic.
“Forgiven and it’s Mrs. No miss or I don’t know now... am I a miss or a mrs?” Kalila asked Lucas she she held out her hand toward him almost tipping her glass over with the action. She saved it with her free hand as she went to take another drinking having no idea of the effects of alcohol when drunk in quick succession. “Forgive..” She said with a slight hiccups, “My manners. I’m Kalila, Lucas.” She said smiling at him, she knew better than to give out too many details about herself. It came with living with suspicious people who had taught her that the world wasnt as fun loving and nice as she thought.
She still didnt much choose to believe it though. Kalila glanced at the hand that sliced across his neck as she looked horrified for a moment. “Why do you want to kill the bar tender?” She asked in a low whisper, “What did he ever do to you?” Maybe she wanted that answer or maybe she didnt. Either way it seemed a strange action to take. Then he said the one word that felt like a stab to her heart. Home. Where was that again? It was why she was trying to drink to work that out though the idea that there would be an idea was lacking.
“Me home or you home?” Kalila questioned shaking her head at him. “I don’t want a cab I am waiting for my idea here. Thank you Mr. Lucas.” She explained to Lucas as she rolled her eyes at him. Why didnt people understand, it was the movies that showed her what to do and now this Lucas wanted to put her in a taxi home. “I don’t have a home anymore. I had to leave it so now I have a bag.” She added pointing to the floor. “I need to find my home doing this... it’s what Americans do when they think so it should work anytime now.” Kalila said as she stared at her glass as if an answer would hit her in the face.
She hoped it would given that life skills weren’t exactly in her skill set. She had never had to exist on her own before, she had gone from a home that she knew well. One where sure she might have been a little weird and odd but loved. To a new family that had bought her and now she had left to make sure that they were safe. There wasnt any time at twenty one in between that to exist on her own. “Do you need to find your answer too?” Kalila asked as she waved at the bartender hopeful for another drink as she gulped the one she had and pulled out some notes from her pocket.
It was a little over a hundred dollars as she went to hand it to Lucas. In her world she got six of those a week and six went a long way or it had done until she tried to work out rent. That she didnt have a clue about but it had a few zeros after the rents she had looked at. A one bedroomed shoe box was expensive to her though even a one bedroomed shoe box was the ritz compared to home with her family in Palestine.
“Buy yourself a think drink on me Mr. Lucas.” She said smiling not entirely sure of the US currency either yet, after all she didnt handle finances so what she made was hers to do with as she wanted. She could feel the remainder of the second drink making itself felt as she could feel her face flushing red. Her insides felt like she could breath fire as she coughed a little not used to the strength of alcohol at all. A beer would have knocked her over flat usually but then sitting down, she guessed she would feel it more if she stood up.

[attr="class","Lucasner"] [attr="class","Lucasner1"] [attr="class","Lucasback"] [attr="class","Lucasnert"]Shaahir wasn't the type to just kick his wife out without making sure she was taken care of. Which made Lucas wonder just how drunk this ex-wife was. Yes, he kept up with the diplomatic hoopla of the area. It gave him something to talk about with his patients and almost all of Chicago knew the wives of the Palestinian ambassador were at risk. This was why he never wanted to get a job in politics, ever. The whole crazy started with this younger girl insisting that she could hold her alcohol. “Just because you can hold it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an effect.” His doctoral side was showing. Even if he was an obstetrician of all practices, he knew what alcohol did to the body. Oh he couldn’t keep the wives names straight, so he wasn’t even going to ask. He was happy when she set him straight and gave him her name. That saved him a whole lot of embarrassment. “Let’s not worry about the whole title thing. I was just trying to be polite.” Lucas offered, “but Kalila suits you.” So maybe a few drinks in he was a bit loose lipped but that didn’t mean he didn’t mean what he said. Lucas chuckled when she mentioned killing the bartender. “Nothing like that, it’s a sign that I don’t want anymore alcohol.” Well that was partially the truth. She didn’t need to know that she’d been cut off from drinking. “And since I’m done drinking for the night, It’s coffee time. I’d appreciate the company.” Yes, he was offering to take her out for coffee. The girl he could tell was troubled. That was confirm when she started babbling on something about Americans. “I came here to reflect on some things. Stuff I’m trying to forget; but it’s not as American as you think.” Well technically he was American but the drinker in him was totally the Irish. She was trying to hand him money. He put it back into her pocket and put one hand over her arm to keep her from drawing more attention to herself. “I have a spare room you can stay and I don’t want this.” Lucas was struck just feeling like he needed to help. Maybe redemption from feeling like he’d screwed up everything his whole life. At one low point in his life he’d been where she was sort of. Finding his way through college without anyone else to really reach out to. He knew the lonely feeling that came with what she was going through. No, he was going to make this right within the best of his ability. [attr="class","Lucasner2"] [attr="class","Lucasnerlyric"]There's a joke here somewhere I'll shake this world off my shoulders

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WHY CAN'T I BREATHE whenever I think of you Kalila knew Shaahir had taken care of her, she knew exactly what he had done to make sure she wasnt out on her hear but Kalila wanted to make sure she didnt have to do that. She wanted to stand on her own two feet being relying on her husband or ex husband, it couldnt last forever and it was in her mind safer for Saajida and Shaahir if she wasnt asking for help from them. So she had walked away from it, Shaahir could be as angry as he wanted over it but she had made the choice because she thought it was best for them.
“It has an effect? I just wanted an answer.” Kalila said glancing at her glass for a moment, “What effect?” She asked though she did feel warm and with each drink the sting to the back of her throat lessened each time. She wasnt well versed in drinking, it wasnt really a part of her culture so America had been her first taste of it. “Oh sorry I... well Lucas suits you too. It’s a nice name Mr. Lucas.” She said smiling, flirting wasnt really something Kalila had practice in either so saying his name was nice, which it was. Was the best she was going to be able to do for that moment.
“Oh I see.” Kalila said as she sliced her finger across her neck too. “A universal alcohol sign but I didnt mean to disturb you, you can keep drinking.” She offered not wanting to have bothered him though when he offered coffee she just stared at him for a moment. Kalila looked around at the empty seat to the other side of her as she glanced back at Lucas. “You mean me? For coffee... now?” She asked half expecting someone else to waltz in and for him to have been talking to them. “Sure that would be nice but I want to get you the coffee.” Kalila said smiling at him, she had no sense of evil in the world at all and leaving a bar for coffee to her was just someone being nice.
“Oh, what stuff are you trying to forget? Can I help with it at all?” Kalila asked honestly wanted to help him out with whatever it was that was bothering him. After all it was a nice thing to do though she couldnt do anything other than stare when he put the money back into her pocket. Even the fact his hand over her arm lingered there as she stared at it before her eyes tried to meet his. Did he just say he had a room? “You have a room? Are you sure that would be okay?” Kalila asked not sure what he wanted in return though a room was a room.
Maybe they were right, things happened when you were drinking. Good things and she had her answer right there. “How much is this room?” Kalila asked figuring it was a smart question though if he needed to be swayed anymore she decided to put all the things she could do out in the open. “I will pay, and I can cook, have a meal ready for you whenever you want or when you come home from work. I can clean, iron, wash clothes, keep a house tidy. Anything you need done consider it done.” She stated knowing she had done all of that for Saajida and Shaahir too but then the skills were entirely transferable.
Kalila stood up, tottering on her feet despite the flat shoes she was wearing as she wobbled reaching out for Lucas to give him a hug. Saajida always liked that and they cuddled a lot too so it was another transferable thing she felt. What worked for one worked for another though with the rush to her feet she could feel herself swaying as the alcohol started to make itself felt.

[attr="class","Lucasner"] [attr="class","Lucasner1"] [attr="class","Lucasback"] [attr="class","Lucasnert"]Well at least she was copying him and following along. That made cutting her off a lot easier. The girl was younger and naive but Lucas wasn’t trying to take advantage of that. He shook his head. “You’ve had a long day, let me.” He replied when she mentioned going out for coffee. He couldn’t help but smile when she said she would try to help him forget. “You already are helping, I smiled tonight.” A smile was hard to come by these last few weeks for him. It was hard to adjust to everything. He’d even been spending a few nights over at Braden and Rachel’s when he felt things getting a little hard to cope with. “Yeah of course it would be alright. I offered didn’t I?” How much had he had to drink? Who was to say this woman wouldn’t kill him in his sleep? Oh to hell with it. He didn’t think she could honestly harm a fly. He was just trying to be nice. “I don’t want anything in return. I just want to help you.” He almost added the whole back on her feet thing but that was probably more than needed to be said. When he felt arms wrap around him in a hug he decided that maybe she was just a person who liked to give hugs. He wasn’t used to that. He’s never really been around cuddly women. It took him a moment until he reciprocated the hug. “Why don’t I call us both a cab. It’s not safe for me to drive you.” Lucas could feel his own buzz and he was smarter than that. Usually he called Braden but he didn’t want to have to explain this whole crazy night to his brother. Lucas started digging in his pocket for his phone and dialed a number for one of the cab companies. Lucas shed his jacket and put it around Kalila, he knew it was cold outside and he didn’t ‘know if she had brought her jacket or just left it but he wasn’t about to let her freeze. He might be rather rough around the edges but despite his tendency to hit when angry (woman or not) he had been raised properly on how to treat a woman. [googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] WHY CAN'T I BREATHE whenever I think of you Kalila smiled at Lucas wondering why he was being so nice. Since moving to the states she had her eyes opened a little more than she might have liked and people had told here no one was nice without a reason. Maybe this was the guy that would prove them all wrong she figured though it wasnt too much of a bother to her. “Thanks and that’s great news. You really need to smile more because it uses fewer muscles than it does to frown. You have a nice smile anyway so use it.” Kalila stated smiling at him, “And what is it that you want to forget so bad?”
She didnt really get the whole not wanting to talk part of anything but then he had a nice smile, so it made sense to her that he should smile a lot more. “I know but I didnt want you to think you had to. I can look after myself just fine you know.” She said more to convince herself of that than anyone else. She wasnt exactly trained to know how to look after herself, sure a husband she could look after one of those but herself. Yeah that was a new thing to her.
“Well you are helping me so thank you and I do appreciate it.” Kalila said surprised that he wanted nothing in return. No she would make sure to return the favour somehow. “But just so you know I can do a lot of things to help out and I’m not just going to take up a room and do nothing to help you.” As to what that was time would tell but it wasnt like she could figure it out now when her head felt like she was swimming. The minute she wrapped her arms around him she had a sudden fear that she had stepped over a line.
He didnt reciprocate the hug though the minute she was going to let go, he did as she chuckled. “Anyone would think you haven’t had a hug before.” She said chuckling though honestly if he hadn’t, she could make sure to make up for that. It was the least she could do in return for staying at his place. Kalila nodded to the cab, she didnt drive at all as she hadn’t really had the need to drive. In her country her husband would drive her wherever she needed to go or she would walk. “I don’t drive.” She stated deciding that it was good information for Lucas to know.
Kalila watched Lucas shed his jacket, she was pretty sure it wasnt the warmest outside so it made no sense to her until she felt him place it around her. Without thinking she wrapped the jacket around herself and smiled. “You smell good.” She said hiccupping a little as she blinked not sure if she had said it or thought it though it sounded like her voice. “You’re a very nice man Mr. Lucas.” She said as she went to get her things before taking off her scarf from around her neck and doing her best to tie it around Lucas’s. “Here you need to keep warm too.” She offered pretty sure that pink might be his colour as she grinned at him before she tried to put an arm around him to try and steady him though she was sure it was herself that needed the steadying as she teetered in her feet from side to side.
