Location - Holding Cells Time - 11.00am Blue sky and sunshine. Chicago had finally seen that glorious sunshine and business was bustling at precinct 21. The squad cars lined up outside, shiny and washed for the day ahead. Sgt. Platt was giving out the assignments to patrol for the new shift and dealing with incoming enquiries. It was a full house of detectives, officers and civilians all going about daily life. Filing reports, asking for help, working on cases and paperwork. No one had really noticed the large van drive into the garage. Checked at the gate as a pickup of evidence for central storage the paperwork was in order as the van was let through the gate. It drove down into the lot, missing the first space it needed to take to make the pickup. Instead it drover further into the garage that sat directly under the precinct. It parked up next to the elevator for the parking structure and to the far side of the van was the structural column. The very beam that if damaged could cause a catastrophic failure to the foundations of the building. The driver got out walking back up to the check point as they tapped a box of cigarettes and motioned to the corner across the street. What was a five minute smoke break the cop of duty thought, it would take ten to fifteen to check the evidence out and into the van anyway. A polite nod and smile at the driver in the base ball cap as he watched the man make his way across the street. The cop went back to checking the paperwork seeing the signature was missing from the evidence lock up across town. He took two steps to try and catch the driver before the explosion hit and sent him flying into the concrete wall. The sound of crumbling and falling, screaming voices and the cloud of dust and debris that seemed to go on forever as the air was pushed out of the building to be replaced with fire, smoke and dust. (No one dies just injured if you want your character to be, only victims can be injured. Helpers are required to help those injured) Mattie Chappel (victim of explosion), Lara DunCroft(victim of explosion), Gabriela Dawson (help), Annabeth Tucker (help),

It had been a long shift, and Mattie was looking forward to just being done with it, but she still had an hour, and there was paperwork to take up all that time...and she really hated paperwork.
At least once she got done talking to her most recent suspect, she could grab a cup of coffee, get back to her desk and finish up the dreaded paperwork. Then the rest of the day was hers, and so far it was shaping up to be a nice one.
As she walked past the holding cells, Koda trotted alongside her, his tail wagging as he sensed the end of shift coming up. The big dog sat at her side when she stopped in front of one of the cells, his tongue lolling out as he waited patiently.
"Wanda Garner?"
The woman in question stood and shuffled wearily over to the bars. "Officer...pretty dog."
"Thanks." Mattie had gotten over being annoyed at the woman, a regular, for getting into yet another confrontation with another of the 'urban campers', and her mood was much better now. "Just tell me again what happened, and maybe we can get you out of here." After all there were more important things than petty arguments, and it would be easier all the way around to just kick her free with a bus pass to someone else's precinct.
"I'm sorry, officer, I didn't mean trouble, but Beryl..."
In the next instant there was a low, sharp rumble, a rush of air, an invisible force that picked her up, and Mattie was flung to the floor. Her head hit something, she heard Koda's loud whine, and then...nothing...

Location - Holding Cells Time - 11.00amLara's blurred vision began to come back into focus, her ears ringing causing the sounds, screams and cries around her to become dull noise in the background. The force had been so great she wasn't able to actually remember the explosion happening, she was left dazed and only able to genuinely wonder 'Am I alive?'Dazed she stood to her feet and slowly looked down over herself, slowly and gently touching her hands to her torso. 'Yes I'm alive...Damn it.' There was a little blood on her shirt but she didn't know if it was her own, she didn't feel any pain indicating any injuries. But she was still dazed and disorientated so pain wasn't going to register right away. The ringing in her ears began to dissipate and Lara looked around at the aftermath around her, standing calmly in the middle of the room as she looked at the chaos going on around her. There was several voices in the room calling out for help and a few of the women in the cells were screaming, but screaming meant they were still alive and breathing, so the currently motionless officer on the floor a few feet from a K9 was Lara's biggest concern right now. Lara limped towards the officer calmly, remaining perhaps a little too calm given the situation, and she knelt down beside the officer to see if she was breathing. That was when she felt the pain in her ankle causing her to sit, right she had been limping. "Can you hear me?" She asked touching the officer's shoulder. Lara grimaced as the pain began to rapidly increase. She held her ankle and gritted her teeth, "Can we get some help over here?" She shouted. "Officer down!" |

It was undoubtedly her training that kept Mattie from panic and allowed her to impersonally analyze her situation as her consciousness slowly untangled itself from the fuzz that was squeezing her brain and making it hard to think. Something was definitely wrong, although she wasn't sure just what, she was at work, in the station, but she wasn't sure why she was on the ground or why the air was so thick with dust. But what she sensed was that she was safe, there was no immediate danger, and, in fact, there was someone with her trying to help. "Can you hear me?"It took a moment, but Mattie was finally managed an answer. "Yeah...fine...Koda..?" Where was her dog? Was he all right?Frowning, she tried to sit up. "Koda?" A few feet away, the dog let out a whine, staying hunkered down, but making an effort to crawl toward his mistress. Lara DunCroft, Gabriela Dawson, Annabeth Tucker,

'You've gotten into my bloodstream' Beth laid in Tanner’s lap as he flipped through the channels. Something had blown up? She picked her head up. No, this wasn’t happening. “I’m going.” Well she hadn’t really thought her whole statement through. “Excuse me? You're pregnant -- Boden put you on leave.” Tanner was sneezing and still telling her what to do. “You're not going anywhere.” Oh yes, yes she was going somewhere. “I am going. I'm not going to be stupid about it but they need help, they are short staffed. I don't have time to argue with you about this.” She got up the rest of the way of the couch and kissed Tanner on the forehead. Though she didn’t linger long as she headed straight for her car keys. “If you walk out that door, I'm following you.”Like to hell he was. “We don't need you spreading the plague. Last I checked pregnancy wasn't contagious.” No, just dangerous. She opened the door just to hear Tanner grumbling under his breath. “I don’t have the plague.” Well that's debatable. Not really. Beth closed her the door and took a breath once she was outside. Tanner was miserable but Beth was still able bodied. They were too short staffed for all of this mess. No, she just had to get there and find Gabby. Well, she had to find Gabby before Steven or Boden found her. If Steven found her… she was screwed. If Gabby found her well then maybe she could understand needing to do your job. |

Gabby was torn between the two disciplines she knew well. She was a paramedic first and foremost which came easily to her. She was happy enough to get stuck in wearing the familiar turnout coat as she grabbed the kit from the ambulance. Gabby hardly needed to wait for permission as she made her way inside into the chaos. Holding cells, great right were all the criminals were as she was glad Antonio was out for the day. If there was a god she was going to be praying to it later because family, it was everything to her. Even Matt going into the mess, no the last fire she had seen him go into he had almost been cooked but this. It was her job as she made her way calmly toward the building before she saw the one person she wanted to kill for being within a hundred feet. Without a second thought Gabby glared at Beth. “Get your sorry ass home right now.” Gabby shouted at her as she walked up to Beth. “You’ve no business being here when you’re pregnant. Get your stuff and go.” The one thing Gabby could never understand was any woman doing that. She had never transferred to arson for paperwork, away from the demands of truck or a paramedic but that had ended badly. Yes she knew that one but Beth; she should be home with Tanner trying to stop his plague from spreading around the fire house. It made sense and Gabby was hardly going to play around with letting her get anywhere near the building. Had she more time or a spare hand she might have driven the woman home herself but hearing her radio and the cries for help. Yelling at her colleague for a stupid choice. It had to wait until after one mess was fixed first. “If you’re not home in thirty minutes I’ll make sure you never set foot on the ambulance and I’ll tell Boden too.” Gabby threatened though she could do little about the assignments but she could go speak with the chief and get things done that way. She hardly wanted to but if she was pushed. Yes it was her only choice. Instead of waiting for an argument Gabby simply grabbed her bags again and went in search of the holding cells. Her feet pushed over to rubble as she climbed over a beam that had collapsed within her path. If things just fell like jenga bricks it would be so much easier. “Call out, fire department... paramedic. Call out.” Gabby yelled trying to see through the smoke and dust to find anyone she could help. She could see a dog there though her mind never made the jump to K9 unit. No she was still trying to find her human patients. Mattie Chappel, Lara DunCroft,

"Yeah...fine...Koda..?"Lara could see Mattie's mouth moving but whatever she was saying sounded like quiet and muffled noise instead of actual words. Though she was able to read her lips enough to catch the word 'fine'. "Easy." Lara said as Mattie sat herself up and continued to call out for someone. She didn't want the lady to move too fast in case she was injured. It was obvious the officer was more worried about whoever she was calling for than she was about herself, "Who's Cody?" She asked, before looking around the room trying to see if she could see the person in question. But it was a disturbing sight, the building had been thrown into destruction and now they were sitting in the chaos and aftermath that followed. As she sat there her mind started to take it all in and began to wrap around what had happened. After just a moment she slowly started to realize how much her ankle was killing her. And it was only when she registered that the underside of her foot felt wet and painful that she looked down to see that her left foot was bare and that there was blood coming from underneath. The blast had actually knocked her out of her boots, well one of them, and she had walked across some rubble without realizing. she held her ankle and gritted her teeth, grimacing in pain. She didn't know if it was broken or what but it hurt and the ringing in her ears hadn't stopped yet. She could still hear a little but any sounds and voices that she did hear were muffled. “Call out, fire department... paramedic. Call out.” Lara heard the voice but again it was was muffled in her ears and she couldn't make out what was being said. There was a few people screaming in fear or pain, and others were calling out for help in general and Lara was struggling to distinguish anything that was being said right now. |

"Koda..." Mattie corrected, reaching out to touch the other woman, just needing physical contact. "My dog...K9..." Not just a dog, but an officer of the CPD. Not that Mattie would put Koda's life above a human's, but she still wanted to know where he was, what condition he was in. "KODA!" she called, then had a fit of coughing, the action causing sharp pain in her ribs. "I'm Officer Chappel," she murmured, "Mattie...are you all right?" She found the woman's hand and gave it a squeeze, then made an effort to answer the paramedic. "Here! Over here..." Another fit of coughing stopped any further calls, and then she felt a familiar, damp nose against her free hand and she let out a breath. "He's here," she muttered to the woman with her, "do you have any idea what happened?" Her head was still spinning, and she felt like she was floating, so she just stayed still, one hand caressing her dog's head and the other clinging to the woman she was with. Gabby had never seen much of the likes in Chicago as she tried to think where Antonio would be. She was too panicked to think if he was home with the kids or if he had been working. She wanted to try her phone but then if he was right in front of her she wanted to make sure she was working and helping people. Because that next patient could be her brother that was in need of help. Focus she thought, keep it together because she could fall apart later and cry herself to sleep after the fact.
Gabby heard someone call out before she heard the coughing as she tried to follow the noises she could hear. There were so many cries for help it was tough to know what was close and what was in another part of the building. Was it even a building anymore she wondered as she climbed over more of the debris. Even Beth having been there Gabby wondered if the woman had gone home, she needed to because this was no place for a pregnant woman at all. It was no place for any person to be really.
It was only a minute or so before she came across the two woman as Gabby waved at them as she approached. “Paramedic. Gabby Dawson.” She said looking between the two women trying to asses who needed help first and to see what their injuries were. The case was to be prepared for anything and right now Gabby was just glad to have made it to two people who were alive. She could only imagine what the others were finding along the way and that meant heartache all around. “So what are your names and tell me what hurts?” Gabby asked glancing at the two of them.

Lara glanced around at the destruction, the extent of the damage was still all sinking in as the initial shock lessened. Lara looked back to where the indistinguishable voice of the fire department was coming from, but feeling her hand being touched she turned her head back to the lady in front of her.
The woman was visibly shaken and no doubt scared and confused like everyone else had to be, so Lara squeezed her hand in return in attempt to offer her any kind of comfort. Though what kind of comfort could be found in the middle of a scene like this one was anyones guess. All Lara could hear were hazy, muffled sounds as she looked at the woman with her and watched her mouth move. She managed to pick out a couple of words, but nothing enough to form any sentences. Though she did manage to pick out that the woman's name was Mattie.
"I'm Lara." She practically shouted, unable to properly gauge the volume of her own voice. Before she started coughing herself.
"You're gonna be okay, all right?" She tried to assure her. Lara had no idea if or how bad the woman was hurt, but she didn't see any gushing wounds and besides that was what you said to someone at a time like this.
As Gabby approached Lara's hearing cleared a little, but only just enough so that she could guess words and sentences as she watched peoples lips as while they talked.
She managed to pick out the medic introducing herself as Gabby and asking them what hurt.
"I'm fine." She didn't see herself as any kind of priority. Even if she had been bleeding to death Lara wouldn't have classed her life as any kind of a priority, there had to be plenty of people in the building that needed help so Gabby could help those who actually deserved it. That was Lara's way of thinking anyway. Lara gritted her teeth as she gripped her injured ankle. It wasn't broken but it had been twisted bad enough to tear the muscle from the bone. Not that Lara could tell the difference, "My ankle hurts pretty bad." She grimaced.
Lara only had one boot on and the bottom of her bear foot was bleeding, "The foot hurts too, but I'm fine. I'll live." It was the same leg that had the bad ankle. But the piece of glass or metal or rubble that was in it was acting like a plug, preventing the bleeding from bleeding too bad.

"My head isn't too happy." Mattie forced a grin. "Guess it doesn't like having the ceiling dropped on it. Can't hear real well, either." Moving slowly, she struggled to sit up, her hand curling into the thick fur on Koda's neck. "Can you check my dog? He's worth more than me, and he's even bi-lingual...you don't speak Norwegian, do you?" Her grin was a little crooked as she put her free hand to the top of her head, where there was a growing lump that at least explained the pounding headache. "I think I...dunno...just take care of them..." She nodded to Lara and Koda, then winced at the pain the movement caused. "Um...I can help..." Kinda, maybe.
