'You've gotten into my bloodstream' Annabeth was not having a great morning, she’d been sick since she’d woken up. Her stomach was twisting itself into knots but had kept breakfast down (barely). She’d been taking a nap when she heard the claxon bell going off. “Truck 81, Squad 3, All Ambulances, Warehouse fire. 143 West Sixty-Third Street.” Beth grabbed her jacket and shoved it on as she moved as quick as she could. When she got to the ambulance, she tossed a look towards Shani. There was no way in hell that was letting Shani drive, even as bad as she felt Shani drove like a maniac and Beths’s stomach was about to handle it well. She pulled herself up into the ambulance, though she looked worn, tired, and like she was just not herself. It had to be just a stomach bug or something right? Well, at least she hoped that was the case. She whirled on the lights as she followed one of the firetrucks out of the bay. Beth hadn’t had a chance to talk to Tanner this morning about how she was feeling, and they needed a discussion as this stomach bug had been bothering her a few days now. Though last shift she had been perfectly fine. She’d gone down hill on her two off days. Turning left following Truck 51, she focused on the road. She hated fires, being kept outside when people were in need. Then watching Tanner go in was never easy. As she checked both ways before crossing through the red light she tried to keep her mind on something. Normally, she talked to Shani but today she just seemed, off. |

[attr="class","tannernah"] [attr="class","tannerleft"] [attr="class","tannerleft2"] | [attr="class","tannerright"] Every day in this field could bring something new – new challenges, new risks, new chances to save someone else's life – but some days stuck with you more than others. Part of what made doing this possible – the charging headfirst into danger – was knowing he had someone to come out to. That hadn't always been the case. With the call going out to Truck 51, Squad 3, and all ambulances, the first responders would have their work cut out for them. Tanner let the spoonful of cereal clatter inside the bowl. His late morning breakfast would go uneaten. This job also messed with sleeping and eating habits. If you were the kind of person that needed to abide by a strict, unchanging routine, this wasn't the job for you. But, if you wanted to help people, to make a difference, then Tanner couldn't think of a better way to do just that. That's why he did what he did. Because saving lives mattered, but not every day was a good day. Sometimes things went wrong. Sometimes you lost people along the way. Sometimes there was nothing you could do. Gearing up with practiced efficiency, Tanner jumped into the truck, the rest of his team doing the same. Truck 51 pulled out first, leading the convoy of emergency vehicles to the burning warehouse. Speeding along to the scene, the traffic and buildings passed by in a blur. The truth was, to some extent, one also needed to be just a little bit crazy to stare into the face of death without blinking, but he'd always been something of an adrenaline junkie. So, even as they raced closer to the fire, Tanner could keep his composure, while prepping for whatever they would encounter upon arrival. The truck pulled into the warehouse lot; the seriousness of the situation evident even from this distance. As Tanner got closer, he could see not just the flames consuming the building, but that there were people trapped inside who couldn't get out. Not without help. He continued surveying the scene to make quick decisions, as the truck rolled to a stop. Hopping out, he was ready to get to work. Shani had been stocking the supplies for the ambulance. Placing each plastic wrapped item into the appropriate boxes she glanced out at the bay when she heard the claxon bell sound. Just another shift and another run she thought though as truck, squad and all ambulances were mentioned. Maybe this shift would be a little more interesting than most. Then again fifty one was hardly the place for the quiet life. It was perhaps a choice she should have made given two children but then they were of an age where her working was within their understanding. After securing the last of the things Shani slammed the back door to the ambulance shut as she saw Beth stood in position to drive. Smirking lightly Shani just nodded as she headed around to the passenger side. What did everyone have against her driving? She just got people where they needed to be, the faster the better. After all what was the point in sitting in a school run for a half hour when she could make it in ten minutes. There was no denying that Beth was off today, she looked worn out and tired though maybe she just had an exciting night. Watching the truck in front Shani settled into the passenger seat before she glanced at Beth. There was focusing on driving and then there was silence, two things Shani knew Beth knew how to do but the woman was off. For a paramedic an off day was not going to be a great day at all. Not that Shani was completely free of those but her generally manifested in yelling or speaking Israeli. Taking a look out of the window she could see the smoke, flames and could only guess what they were going to be heading in to. This was the part she hated, it was tough enough treating strangers but watching friends go into fires like that. There was always that nagging feeling that maybe today was that day, today was that day she would be trying to help save a life of a friend and not a stranger. “Beth, what’s bothering you?” Shani asked, having never been great with the whole finesse or tact. No Shani was direct and said what was in her head, it was her way of working for the simple fact she was brought up that way. Honesty and strong, which often rubbed off the wrong way with people. “Because if you need to talk, I’d start now because that isn’t going to be a pretty call.” Shani said as her finger tapped against the glass as she took a breath, knowing it would be the last clean or relatively clean air they would be seeing. Wallace was attempting to dig himself out from under the stack of files for the quarterly review of the house. Along with the call sheets, the paperwork from two lieutenants and a captain at the house and frankly he wasnt getting very far with it. The stack to his left was almost negligible while the stack to his right just kept growing every time someone came into his office. Could there not be a call he almost wished, Wallace wasnt the wishing ill on people type but right now a fire would be his paperwork saviour along with nightmare for when they got back.
He heard the Claxon as soon as he had set down last shifts papers as he grabbed his radio and jacket. He could see the ambulances and Truck gearing up as he jumped into his turn out coat and trousers. A quick flick of the lights and sirens and he was following them out of the house. Wallace hated warehouse fires, it was those that cost him people and the last one he thought he might have steamed several of his firefighters last time. He knew that a lot of luck was involved but it didnt change the knotted feeling inside.
He was just thankful for the drive time and the chance that he didnt drive with any others to see his face. It gave him enough time to get it together as he glanced to see the smoke and the flames, this wasnt good and it seemed as if time would be short too. Sending people into the flames was the worst part of his job and right now Wallace wasnt even sure there would be all of ten minutes left to get in and out. Then again from the road it might seem worse where as from outside the structure it could seem better.
This was the part he hated, the part where things could go wrong and all he had to go on as experience, the look of smoke and what his house told him. No it would be fine he thought as he gripped the wheel of his truck a little tighter as he mulled over calling in for more help. No he needed to wait and see what everyone else was telling him first, it could just be a looks worse than it is case he figured. Or at least he hoped it did for the sake of the people he was working with.

'You've gotten into my bloodstream' Annabeth looked towards her partner. “Just my stomach’s in knots.” She admitted. “I just it’s hard knowing that Tanner goes in there. Seeing him go in is another thing entirely." It was no secret anymore that Tanner and Annabeth were an item at the firehouse. Though Beth was only telling her partner half the story. “I guess the call just kinda getting to me today.” She was at least being honest about the part she was opening up about. It wasn’t here place to explain that Tanner’s mother had died in a fire. How Tanner did this after that she had no idea. Hearing that it wasn’t going to be a pretty call made Beth want to spill more stomach contents on the floor. Though she didn’t but it was taking a good amount of willpower not to do just that. Really she didn’t need the third degree from her partner. Sometimes Shani could be rough around the edges but all in all she couldn’t really ask for a better partner. Beth had to calm herself down, this was his job and usually it didn’t get to her. Beth knew why Tanner did what he did, the same reasons she was a paramedic. Deep down it boiled down to helping others. The worry didn’t aide her very well. “I’ll be alright.” She had work to focus on, right. Though she could feel the thicker smokey air alreadying making things difficult. The ambulances weren’t allowed to go any farther because the smoke was already so thick. Beth watched Truck 81 disappeared into the thick dense of smoke. No, she had to make sure they had everything in case there were still people inside. Beth’s ears honed in on the radio. The only way she would know what was going on inside. Throwing up her stomach contents after she got out of the ambulance to go open the doors she closed her eyes. “And now my head hurts.” She informed her partner. Oh this was one hell of a day to be at a warehouse fire. |

[attr="class","tannernah"] [attr="class","tannerleft"] [attr="class","tannerleft2"] | [attr="class","tannerright"] The flames continued to consume the warehouse. For the people trapped inside, the situation had become desperate. Tanner had been doing this long enough to speak from experience: in these types of life and death situations, people rarely made good decisions. It would be up to the firefighters of House 51 to charge headfirst into danger when everyone else was trying to get out. A decision that Tanner didn't make today. As the Battalion Chief on scene, Boden would be the one calling the final shots, but Tanner would always tell it the way he saw it. From Tanner's estimation, it already look dicey -- maybe worse up close than it had from the road. Not that it was the kind of thing to give him pause. If Tanner were given the word to go in, he'd go in. It was that simple. "We have multiple reports of people still trapped inside. I think we have a way in through the back, but we have to move quickly."With the rest of the team already working to quench the flames, Tanner looked to further cement their plan moving forward. Two men, maintaining the buddy system, might just be able to pull this off while the rest of Truck 81 battled the fire itself. Just another day for a firefighter. Shani sat there listening to Beth, she could understand that feeling. Her husband had been a cop and know what he had done or even when they were at the same scene it was tough to keep calm and just carry on with her job. Shani had never really been adverse to getting involved but then as the police department often reminded her she was just the paramedic and it was frowned upon to kick someone’s butt for hurting a cop. “I know it’s tough but just thrust they know what they are doing. You know, like they all keeping telling us back at the house.” Shani said trying to smile to put her at ease some. Shani wondered if there was something else because there had been plenty of calls they had seen Tanner go into a burning building. Some worse than others yes but then what made today so different she wondered eyeing her partner carefully. Shani was a great believer in the third degree, ask, ask and ask again until she had gotten to the bottom of what was going on. She was brutally honest and said what she thought but then she felt it was a lot better than bottling it up and exploding at someone. Then again her methods were hardly always appreciated and she was only trying to watch out for her partner. “I know you will, once you work out what really going on.” Shani said smiling at her partner for a moment. Shani hated being kept away from things, yes there was smoke but they had oxygen tanks just like the rest of them did. Shani listened at the radio when she heard Beth throwing up her stomach contents. Yes her partner was not alright at the moment as she jumped out and went around to Beth. “Yeah that’s it Beth, you’re out of this. Come on round back and I’ll set you up an IV and give you something for the sickness.” Shani stated in more of a tone that arguing was going to get her nowhere at all. If the tone was missed then the look on her face said as much. “You can listen to the radio in there but you’re no working this call right now.” Shani said guessing there was more to this than just sickness but the list was long and guessing. No she was a paramedic, guessing was far from her job. Though dragging Beth through the usual questions, it would be easier if she just explained beyond the honesty earlier. [googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] THIS IS STILL my firehouse Everything seemed a little nicer from all way back on the road, the smoke didnt seem as thick or black and the place didnt seem like the seventh circle of hell. No up close, this fire screamed doom to him but it wasnt like they were in the business of running the other way. No it was up to them to go in and fix this or at least try to get everyone out they could before the place turned to cinders. Which by the looks of it wasnt going to be too long at all.
“Then let’s get to that way in Lieutenant.” Wallace said as he grabbed his gear from the truck and moved to go with Tanner. There was no way he was staying outside on this one, it would be ridiculous to send one man in alone on this but two, at least two had a better chance of making it back with the buddy system and Wallace wasnt about to let his Lieutenant out of his sight if he could help it. As chief the lives of those working in the house where on him, if someone didnt get to go home then it was on him.
Simple really so while the rest were outside fighting back the flames, he could at least have the back of someone who was risking their life to go and save others. Family was family no matter what and right now, it seemed like the only logical option to go with. It might not be safe but then they were fire fighters, it wasnt exactly a safe job they had on a good day.
“On your lead Lieutenant but as soon as this becomes too dicey we’re out. No if’s or but’s you got that?” Wallace asked knowing that if they had to get out, it was going to be needed because he wasnt about to lose anyone to this fire. No this wasnt looking great to start with and time was a factor as he pulled some of his gear on ready to go and head inside.

[attr="class","Bethner"] [attr="class","Bethner1"] [attr="class","Bethback"] [attr="class","Bethnert"]Beth was still newish to things in perspective. She’d only been at this a year. Sometimes she felt like her partner was a pain in the butt and sometimes she was the best thing that ever happened to her when it came to her job. Beth had been learning a lot but was still learning how to take command of situations. That was one of her biggest downfalls. That and watching Tanner go running inside. “My stomach is just in knots. I feel alright now. Let me do my job Shani.” It wasn’t just an excuse to keep going after she got sick she felt loads better. “I’m keeping hydrated. I don’t need an IV.” She continued around the ambulance and opened the ambulance doors. “Besides we’ve got triage since we got here first.” She smiled at her partner. “I’m alright.” Beth wasn’t in any state to do heavy lifting but triage, she could handle triage. One thing Beth was when it came to her job was stubborn. She’d been given a chance to make something of life and she’d done just that. It wouldn’t do anyone good to be laying down on her job or making everyone else do all the work. “We have enough firefighters that can help do the lifting. I can draw the line at the heavy lifting and be alright.” She was looking out for herself and she was feeling a bit better now that her she’d rid herself of whatever was bugging her stomach. [attr="class","tannernah"] [attr="class","tannerleft"] [attr="class","tannerleft2"] | [attr="class","tannerright"] Just as Tanner had been ready to tap on his men to head into the burning building with him, his boss officially approved the idea, but with a caveat. Boden himself would be the one going inside with him. Tanner hated the idea – not because Boden was bad at his job, but because he was so good at it. The Battalion Chief should be outside, making the tough calls. If they were planning to rescue the people trapped inside, the two of them didn't have time to debate the wisdom of Boden's decision. Of course, Tanner understood the basis for that decision. Firefighters and paramedics were a tight-knit family with common purpose. You didn't ask your subordinates to do anything you weren't also willing to do. Boden was definitely reinforcing that fact right now. Tanner took a long glance over towards one of the ambulances, where Shani and Beth were preparing to receive casualties, before turning back to Boden and reluctantly nodding. His boss was geared up and ready to go – it was now or never. Hopefully this didn't come back to bite them in the ass. Trying to explain how he'd lost a Battalion Chief in the line of duty... yes, they were all trained for this, but fires were unpredictable beasts. Damnit, Tanner didn't want to have that conversation with anyone. He would have to make sure to keep an eye on Boden while they were inside. "This way," Tanner called out, jogging in the direction of the entrance. Entering the building with a plan in mind, Tanner began making his way through the burning structure. His sister, Britt, had shied away from uncontrolled fires ever since one had claimed their mother. He, on the other hand, had run towards the flames, wanting to save people from that same fate. If he could do that today, then Tanner would consider it a job well done. "Call out if you spot anyone, sir."Annabeth Tucker , Wallace Boden , Shani McGuire [attr="class","tannerright2"] |

Shani knew she could be tough to work with but then where was the fun in being easy to work with. A partner would learn nothing from her if she was easy going on them and her personality hardly allowed for that. The army had taught her a lot about what she could do and moving to Chicago, it had taught her a lot about life and the fact that the job was never one you stopped learning. There was no ‘I know it all’ say that could hit her because she knew that would never happen.
“Your stomach doesn’t just turn into knots, I know that much. Either your sick or something is bothering you Beth.” Shani stated though stopping her partner from working was going to be a headache all in itself. Shani simply followed Beth as she nodded, “Okay Mrs. I’ve been at this five minutes. If you puke again you’re on an IV and you’re in the back of this ambulance, I can handle triage and I’ll even bring the ambulance out of service so just advanced warning.” Shani stated seeing her smile; she hated it when someone tried to tell her they were alright when she could see otherwise.
Shani knew she would be doing the exact same thing if it was her. Triage was important and having two sets of hands more so. “What else do you think they are here for?” Shani asked quirking her brow at Beth, “All they do is stand around while we do the work anyway so might as well put them to work for us. Besides some of them do have a way of looking good doing it.” She teased trying to make Beth laugh or smile. Sure her husband might be gone but Shani could still browse the options out there from time to time.
It never hurt to keep her eyes open she told herself knowing that there would be no talking Beth around on the subject at all. It was strange to meet someone as stubborn as she could be but then it was good too, at least now she knew they both would be working triage even if she was going to keep one eye on Beth at all times. “Tell me if you feel any different okay and do not even think to bluff me on it either. I have ways of knowing.” Shani said smiling at Beth, oh she did have ways but mostly it was being blunt and pushing people until they admitted the truth. It had to be a power on some scale.

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] THIS IS STILL my firehouse Boden had lost too many people to fire and almost lost too many to fires just like this one, today he was unwilling to say on the outside of that building and make the command decisions. Two of them were going in he was making sure that the lieutenant was coming back out alive. Wallace didnt think too much on what others thought, if he was willing to go into a fire with his team mates and family at least people knew he had their backs no matter what. It might not always seem like it but he did.
Wallace saw the glance toward the ambulances, at least the paramedics were on the outside of this one. Hearing Tanner Wallace followed the Lieutenant to the entrance of the building. “Lead the way lieutenant.” Wallace replied deciding to let Tanner make the calls in there. Inside the building Wallace wasnt chief, he was just like the rest of them ready to take orders and listen to the right people about what to do. The building was getting worse with each minute and so getting in there made the most sense.
Doing his usual Wallace made sure to keep Tanner in sight, the last thing he wanted was to have to leave that building and explain to the certain set of paramedics why Tanner wasnt with him. No mistakes, no issues and as little danger as possible given the circumstances. “Got it and it’s just Boden.” Wallace replied but as soon as he’d managed to say that Wallace saw something. “Your one O’clock Tanner. We had movement right there, did you see that?” He asked wanting to make sure it wasnt just his eyes that were seeing things.
His first time back in a building and not wanting from the outside, well he didnt want to be sending everyone on a goose chase after something that was just his own imagination. It wasnt like the smoke made it any easier to see.

[attr="class","Bethner"] [attr="class","Bethner1"] [attr="class","Bethback"] [attr="class","Bethnert"]Beth gave her partner a look. “It’s probably something I ate. I’ll be alright.” She assured Shani as the two of them made their way around. Beth held up a bottle of water. “And I’m not planning on needing an iv from fluid loss anytime soon. Let’s just get this call over with.” There was one thing that Beth didn’t like and it was calls like this. Warehouse fires were always so unpredictable. Annabeth did manage a laugh when Shani mentioned the firefighters just standing around. “Except all the good looking ones run INTO the fire.” It was true, Tanner had gone in and honestly that was the only firefighter that could be turning her head. Though she could at least let Shani window shop the house. Not that Beth had ever really had much interest in doing so herself, even before Tanner had come along.
