Lucas had been wrapped up in everything going on and not really had a chance to talk to his brother much. He was still gripping with the fact he was a cop. Hell even his wife was a cop. Those were the people Lucas trusted least and yet despite his broken relationship with his brother he wanted to fix things. He'd not even gotten a chance to tell Braden about Meg's pregnancy or even that they'd just recently moved. His wife had been super excited about the new house. Meg hadn't wanted a super huge wedding so they'd just gone on vacation and gotten married before they came back. At one point her and Steph and been planning a double wedding then both girls had backed out. Not that he blamed them. The problem was it almost seemed like he'd purposefully not told Braden and his sisters. Though he was worried about Meg and the upcoming baby. He had long since given up his drug addicted ways but was drinking heavilly when no one was looking. There were lots of regrets and drowning everything seemed to numb it all. Too bad he knew it was only temporary. "Hit me again." Lucas called to the bar tender who quirked a brow and gave him another drink. Hermann long since had taken Lucas' keys. Hermann didn't know him well yet but he was not going to be responsible for Lucas causing an accident or driving. Lucas put his head on the bar. Meg was at work and didn't need to see him in this state. She'd give him a firm talking to if she did see him.

Rachel had been out with work, yes cops again. She worked with them, socialised with them it was a life and she enjoyed it. Sure her day had been awful and she had left a message for Braden she would be back ‘later’ though after two beers she was barely feeling a buzz from it. It seemed that the luck of patrol that day had seriously gone down, a newbie had handcuffed a suspect and forgotten to lock the car. Which meant a man hunt that went under the radar until they found the guy again.
Why people ever thought smacking handcuffs with a hammer would break them was really dense in her book. Though it only added to the problem when the booking desk asked what had happened to them because they couldnt get them off the suspect. Bolt cutters and a lot of tears from a thirty something year old and a night out seemed to be just right for the day. Not that Rachel didnt want to go home, far from it but the occasional walk on a wild side or a couple of beers with friends worked just as well.
Her attention was caught by a guy calling hit me again, she glanced over only to glance back again as she saw his head on the bar. It wasnt the state he was in that caught her eye it was the person himself. Crap, it was Lucas, Braden’s brother. Rachel had met him once and it was a little awkward but it went well, drunken brother-in-law she had no idea as she saw Hermann pour him another drink. Rachel excused herself from the group as she waved a hand at Hermann telling him to stop as Rachel moved onto the seat next to Lucas.
Rachel put her second half finished beer on the bar as she glanced at Lucas. “Fancy seeing you here.” She said smiling. “So do you want me to call you a cab?” Rachel asked though she guessed with the state he was in the answer would be no. “Or do you want to tell me what’s going on with you?” She added deciding that of all she knew of Lucas, it was pieces here and there. Rachel hadn’t pried with Braden so she was a little in the dark though she knew a few things like drinking wasn’t going to be a good substitute or if Rachel let Lucas leave Molly’s and get into trouble, it was as much on her as anyone.

Lucas hadn’t failed to notice Rachel approach despite his head having been down on the table. He handed Hermann his card. “Whatever she’s had, add it and keep it open.” He stated as he meant that he wasn’t cutting her off in return but merely paying for what Rachel was ordering. Lucas made more than Braden and Rachel combined, he was allowed to pay for her drinks. ”Talk That’s funny,” Lucas lightly scoffed. She sounded just like a cop. “There’s nothing really to say,” he added. There was a lot on his mind but talking wasn’t solving any of his issues so there was that. Talking didn’t ease the fears for his pregnant wife who had PTSD. Talking didn’t fix the self-blame that Lucas took on himself. The only person even remotely in harm’s way was Lucas’ alcoholic father. But Patrick was not here for Lucas to take all his buried anger out on. Over the years Lucas had outlets for the aggression. It led to trouble with the police and everything else. Lucas had turned everything around and in the process paid the price. He’d lost connections to the people who mattered most to him. Relationships had suffered because of it, his family suffered because of it and he’d been determined to turn things around after Meg got him turned on the right track. Now that Meg was tumbling it was hard to handle, yet again. Lucas hardly felt that he and Braden had put the past in the past. Lucas was beginning to understand why their father had been led to drink. The pain, the helpless feeling. Lucas was dead set on treating Meg and his unborn child so much better than Patrick had treated their mother. What Patrick had done to Braden, their mother, and Lucas was unforgivable. But explaining things to Rachel of all people. Not going to happen. She’d know what Braden filled her in on and that was it. Lucas felt like he was looking in the mirror. The last place he felt like going was home. “My wife is working and no way am I going home to an empty house.” No the empty house made things worse. There was too much anger he might do something that he regretted. The last thing he wanted was a night full of regrets.

Rachel smiled and shook her head at Hermann, oh she wasnt even going to go down that road. Rachel figured that Lucas made a fair amount but there was no way she was going to take his money when he was drunk, no that was strictly reserved a possible game of cards that didnt involve trying to bribe a baby to eat mushed up peas and carrots. “And like he said, I’m buying and paying.” Rachel offered her own card to Hermann as she motioned for Lucas to take his card back. “Can’t take your money when you’re... tipsy.” Rachel said trying not to say drunk or sloshed.
Funny? She wasnt trying to be as Rachel wondered exactly what was going on with him. Rachel was sure there was a whole world of talking to be done at some point though getting through to him. She figured that this might be a chance to talk without added pressure though it seemed like that wasnt going to happen. “You know when you came by the house.” Rachel said as she took a sip of her beer. “You found out that I was a cop, so you know I can tell when people have something to say, even if they don’t want to.” She explained though she wasnt going to push too much. “So the option is there, talk if you want to and it doesn’t get any further. If not you can drink coffee.” She offered grinning.
The cop thing seemed to be an issue though in that first meeting Rachel hadn’t had much of a chance to start figuring things out. Rachel knew that Lucas’s history hadn’t exactly been without it’s issues, Braden had made that much clear but she didnt pry or try to search for information that wasnt offered. Every family had their histories so it was something she was used to though getting to know the brother that had been absent for years. It was clean slate to start over she hoped.
Rachel chuckled as she shook her head, “Wow an empty house, I can’t remember the last time no one was home.” Rachel said thoughtfully as she glanced at the beer she held. It was maybe a little obvious that drinking she was a lightweight and she hadn’t been out much recently. Rachel had never been the party animal type so three beers was her living dangerously. “Anyway, you’re coming home with me then and don’t think about arguing with me. You’ve a niece to get to know.” Rachel said knowing she wouldnt give him much of a choice.
“And I might need help getting back anyway, this is the third beer you know. Third beer in... you know I can’t remember the last time I was out. So third in a long while.” Rachel said as she grinned at him and chuckled again. Rachel was far from drunk and sure if she wanted to get to Lucas’s level she needed to do some serious catch up but merry or tipsy was maybe the best description.

Lucas handed Rachel back her card. “I’ve been drinking but I’m not hammered.” Lucas pointed out plainly. No, he wanted to be hammered but he wasn’t entirely there yet. He’d had his head on the bar more from thinking and guilt. He wasn’t so intoxicated that he couldn’t think. No, that is how intoxicated he wanted to be until Rachel had cut him off. In the end, he was just going to have one hell of a headache in the morning. There was no arguing with Lucas. He could be downright stubborn when he wanted to be, drinking only made it worse. Right, she would use the cop angle. “I don’t talk to cops.” That made it all the easier to try and whittle his way out of it. No, Lucas didn’t know her from the next cop down the street. He got up from the bar and clenched a fist banging it on the bar in front of himself. “Do not threaten me.” Snapping his head towards her he glared. She was painting herself just like every other cop he’d ever dealt with. How could she sit there and grin about it? She had no idea. Lucas scoffed when she mentioned going back to her place. “You think you are going to walk in here and drag me out of here? For what? To keep out of trouble with my brother?” He snorted. Rachel had struck a nerve and then tried to play nice? “You married my brother, but you know NOTHING about me.” He informed her. “Perhaps you should brush up on those detective skills, Officer.” He used the title more so in anger than anything else. If she wanted him to see past her being a cop she wasn’t doing a very good job of it. Moving away from the bar, he headed outside. He thought about texting his brother to come and pick him up. Not that it wouldn’t be a disaster, but his brother was someone he trusted. Meg couldn’t come, she was at work and had a lot to think about it. The last place she needed to show up was here. The cold night air let his slow breathing make its presence known. He could still see the bar. Despite his hardest willpower, he wasn’t going to let Rachel be there without someone watching out for her. Picking up his phone he fired off the text to his brother. ‘Need to talk. Come get me?’He threw in the address. ‘I’m outside.’

Rachel was trying to be nice and when he handed her back her card she wasnt sure if she should argue her point some more. Rachel was passionate about a lot of things and paying her own way was one of them, Braden earned more than she did and she guessed Lucas would be the same but it didnt mean she was going to let others pay her way. She wasnt exactly sure that arguing that right this moment was a great idea. “Fine but I’ll repay you later.” Rachel stated knowing she would, either with another night out or simply dropping off the cash.
Great, this night was just getting better she thought when she heard the dont talk to cops. Rachel knew he had an issue with cops but she didnt know why, maybe he was annoyed by them or had gotten into trouble as Braden hadn’t exactly painted the picture of stability. She jumped when his fist banged on the bar as she shook her head. “I wasnt threatening you, I just...” Rachel shook her head, it wasnt a threat hell people knew when she was doing that. She might not have been the tallest or biggest person but she could sure as hell make a threat when it was required.
Rachel realised when he started to talk about dragging him out of there she had struck a nerve she wasnt aware of. The one thing she didnt do was try to keep out of trouble with Braden, if he had anything to say she was sure he would say it to her. This wasnt exactly something she wanted to fight over and in her mind bringing Lucas home with her at least gave them a chance to talk. Even if Rachel might fall asleep through the middle of it, the two brothers needed to talk. It wasnt like she could invite him around for dinner because she could hear the many excuses to get out of that one.
When Lucas moved away and headed outside Rachel waited, she figured he might come back though when he didnt she passed Hermann her card again to settle the bill. Once it was returned to her she took another sip of her beer as she headed outside as well. The minute she opened the door the sobering Chicago breeze hit her face as she made her way down the few steps to the bar. A combination of heels, a breeze and a beer too many on an empty stomach had her tripping over that last step and sending her flying onto the floor.
Rachel pushed herself up from the ground glaring at the surrounding area as she looked for Lucas. Right now she was mad, mad because he had an issue and she didnt have a clue why he was taking it out on her. Rachel wasnt about to let it lie and sure Braden might kill her but she wasnt going to leave things like that with his brother. Hell if it was her own brother she would have kicked his ass for even talking to her like that. Rachel dusted herself off as she saw the cuts on her hand and the torn jeans, well it was all the rage now for torn clothes so why not. “Lucas!” Rachel yelled as she looked around moving a few steps this way and that trying to see where he might have gone.
“I’m an officer, not a detective and if you gave one rats ass about getting to know people then you wouldnt disappear on me.” She yelled not sure if she was appearing like the slightly tipsy crazy person she would usually haul in when she was working. “I don’t know you but it’s not by choice, same as you don’t know me. You’re welcome at our place any time so why dont you quit being a brat and at least talk to me.” Rachel added as she wondered off down one of the streets not sure if she was even heading in the right direction or not.

[attr="class","bradennah"] [attr="class","bradenleft"] [attr="class","bradenleft2"] | [attr="class","bradenright"] Braden read the text twice to be sure. Unusual in that Lucas wanted to talk about whatever Lucas wanted to talk about. Especially curious that Lucas was making the first overture. Braden recognized the address – Molly's Bar – but the typing wasn't indicative of someone who'd had too much to drink. Still, the fact Lucas had provided the address to a bar worried him. Something must be weighing heavily on his brother's mind. Braden looked over to the desk opposite his. Technically, his shift didn't end for another twenty minutes, but he could call it quits a little bit early. The two partners looked after each other like that. "Sharon, cover for me? It's Lucas..."Braden typed out a quick message in response. On my way. Sit tight. Stuffing his cell phone back in his pocket, and without waiting for a response, he grabbed his coat and hurried out the door to where his Mazda CX-5 was parked. Without bothering to boot up his GPS – he knew the way well enough – Braden was on the road a couple of minutes later, heading for one of the local bars. Driving faster than the speed limit allowed, Braden continued to wonder what the text had been about. Considering the source, and his brother's usual willingness to talk, it sounded urgent. He put his foot on the gas. Hopefully whatever was troubling Lucas didn't continue to escalate, as Braden continued to navigate the streets. He'd have his answer soon enough: he was almost there. Lucas and his track record with cops wasn’t exactly pristine. Rachel was acting all cop. Bringing her career into things when really all he wanted to do was sort through his head and she was setting off his fear trigger and if he wasn’t careful someone was going to get hurt. He could only imagine the consequences for decking Rachel. He’d hit women before, that wouldn’t stop him. The only thing keeping his hands to himself right now was the respect he had for his brother. Otherwise, Lucas might be in handcuffs already on his way to the precinct. He more than wanted to tell Rachel to just give him space. Clearly his body language and half telling her off wasn’t sinking in. Lucas just wanted to be left alone. That’s when Braden’s text came in. Sit tight. Well that was easier said than done when your sister in law didn’t understand English. As if on cue, she was hollering at him again. Oh for the love of... “Six a dozen pigs half a dozen sows.” Yes his cop pun on the common colloquialism had been fully intended. Talk? Was she really barking up this tree again? When she took a turn down a different walk, he doubled back around and went to wait at the bar for his brother. Some women clearly needed leashes. His sister in law appeared to be one of them. He wasn’t thrilled with her lack of disrespect in him telling her that he didn’t want to talk and trying to get out of her way, she was just following him. Lucas made a few walks around the block while waiting on his brother. Clenching a fist he slammed it into the metal no parking sign on the curb like a hammer. The sign gave way to the pressure and the rounded indentation hit back with the same force exerted upon it. Lucas took his hand away and rubbed the side of it. That actually had hurt. Lucas was destructive when he was angry, he needed a grip on himself and the people here capable of keeping him calm weren’t here. In fact, one of them had him worried which is why he was here in the first place. He saw Braden’s car coming into view and Lucas was keeping well out of Rachel’s way. Lucas wanted to tell Braden that his wife was a crazy bitch from hell; but that would go over about as well as hitting her he was sure. They hadn’t chosen to be family, that was all Braden’s doing. Lucas took a breath, he really needed to calm down.

If this was how things had gone between Lucas and Braden all the time she could see why they had lost touch. Rachel couldnt understand Lucas’s attitude, she had lost her brother recently too. The person she admired for years and now it was just her and her sister left in the McGuire family beyond Shani though things were still settling there. Rachel had no idea what she had triggered or what he had an issue with other than her being a cop or maybe it was the fact she was with his brother.
After all it was that photo that seemed to cause the problem. Rachel had never really been one to leave a problem where it was, she wanted to know what was going on and having her brother in law run off on her wasnt exactly the way she liked to leave things. So sure she followed him and dragging Braden in, no he was working so it wasnt like she was going to ask him to come down there and fix things. She was a grown adult and she could handle this herself, okay maybe not handle given where things were but she could at least try to find out what was going on.
Then came the cop pun, was he really going to do that? The one profession she valued, her job and mainly a life and he was making it into a pun. Oh what she would give to knock his ass to the floor and make sure he didn’t sit down for a week. Then again she doubted Braden would be happy with her kicking the backside of his brother so probably not the smartest idea. Following Lucas was easy enough, oh he wasn’t getting away from her just like that.
It was until she watched him slam his fist into the metal parking sign, maybe inviting him home had been a bad idea. Family was family though and if they were ever going to understand what was going on talking was the only way. She couldn’t mind read and doing a background check on her husbands brother, probably not the greatest thing to do when it would get flagged and Braden would be alerted likely enough.
“Your hand okay or do you need a lift to the hospital?” Rachel asked or rather called keeping a decent distance from Lucas when she saw Braden’s car. Rachel pulled out her phone to see if she had accidentally called Braden but nope it wasn’t her as she figured Lucas had. Though in that thought she couldn’t hide the smile on her face. She couldn’t exactly take credit for Lucas reaching out but if it worked it worked. Rachel didn’t move toward Braden’s car she simply waited where she was, far enough away that she could see Lucas turn if he chose to turn on her. Close enough to be present just in case it wasn’t her he turned on.
Sure they were brothers but if they even laid a hand on each other she wasnt beyond getting involved to put an end to any issues. As the youngest in her family, an older brother and sister growing up there were enough scuffles to know how to get right into the middle of one and make it out alive too.

[attr="class","bradennah"] [attr="class","bradenleft"] [attr="class","bradenleft2"] | [attr="class","bradenright"] Braden parallel parked the SUV along the sidewalk. He hadn't yet seen Rachel, but Lucas looked to have made enemies with a nearby sign – and the sign had gotten the better of the confrontation, if Lucas nursing his hand was any indication. Double-tapping the button to lock the doors, Braden wanted to have the conversation… same as Lucas did. Sticking around the bar, given his brother's track record with drinking might not be the best idea, but hopefully he could steer Lucas away from walking through those doors. "Something on your mind, Lucas? Your text sounded urgent. And… well, you're not exactly out here making friends."By now, Braden's shift would have been over and he would have been on his way home for the evening. Instead, here he was outside of Molly's. At least he wasn't drinking – something he hadn't done in… he couldn't even name the last time. For good reason. His father – their father – had been an alcoholic. The idea Braden could fall into that same trap kept him from indulging much. Being here didn't make him feel better about it. But he would always come if Lucas called – no matter how uncomfortable the environment made him. Rachel Murphy , Dr. Lucas Murphy [attr="class","bradenright2"] |

Lucas purposefully ignored his sister in law. The comment about his hand being alright, he didn’t care what he did to this hand. Besides Meg could take care of it later. Pain was relative and right now Lucas was too pissed off to be in pain. That’s when he heard his brother. “You gonna go all cop on me too?” He already knew the answer to that, Braden already knew his issue with cops. There was no way his older brother would do something like that. The only reason Lucas didn’t avoid Braden was they were brothers long before Braden had ever been a cop. Lucas would like to think that Braden was similar to the person he’d been when they were kids. Despite Lucas’ hate for his brother then, Lucas had made a lot of connections between his trouble making years and getting his degree. “Well I’m not about to walk home after having a few. Nor am I about to drive. Meg’s working and everyone else wants to go all cop on me.” By everyone else, he meant Rachel but he’d let Braden make that deduction. Though the whole reason for his drinking wasn’t coming to light just yet. He’d still been trying to figure out how to tell Braden the news. He understood why his dad drank, it numbed the pain. At least the immediate mental pain, but it didn’t solve the problem. Though before he knew what he was doing, he was rambling. “Meg’s showing all the signs of PTSD…” He played with the zipper on the navy blue hoodie that he’d chosen to wear. They’d went and eloped to Alaska because Meg hadn’t wanted a huge wedding and things were better some days than others. The stress and any other number of reasons had her changing her mind about a double wedding with her sister. At least that is what Lucas made of it. The real truth? He wasn’t even sure he’d known that. “My trip to Alaska?” He knew he’d told Braden about that, Lucas had been trying to keep in touch. “We eloped, she wanted something quiet, nothing to stress her out.” He shrugged. “Things were getting better, some days are better than others.” He finally decided to spit it out. “She’s pregnant and Braden I’m scared to death of it. It’s one thing to be expecting a kid, it’s another to handle all this at the same time.” Lucas rubbed his hand again. It was definitely at the very least going to swell. Lucas put up with the arguing and the hormones and everything else. He never let Meg see this side of him. The side that needed the escape, that needed to feel like he had some control over things. Lucas hated being out of control of anything. “The last thing I need is a cop right now.” Again going back to Rachel’s whole attitude. Lucas clenched a fist just thinking about the whole ‘I am a cop talk to me’ stunt she’d pulled. It hadn’t earned her any favors. If anything, she was the last person he wanted to be anywhere near to and that wasn’t just a tonight thing. If she’d been trying to push him away, it had worked to perfection.

Rachel had deliberately refrained from calling Braden for the exact reason bars he wasnt comfortable around. She was both glad Lucas had called Braden and annoyed with him for doing it as well. Did the man not know these things, they had grown up in the same house though she stopped herself from yelling about that too. All she seemed to do was make things worse and being out too, she was tipsy but not so bad that she couldnt think straight. That was a rule of hers, never drunk but merry and always in control of herself.
Hearing the cop comment Rachel in hindsight might have played it better but then again, she was a cop. It was as much a part of her as not being so Lucas just had to deal with that. She was none the wiser as to why he had an issue but then again if he didnt tell her, how was she supposed to know? Men they were the most frustrating people on the planet, was it better to step up and hold her hands up to causing the incident or stay back and let the two talk? Well whatever choice she made it would be wrong in the eyes of one of them.
Only her marriage and brother-in-law in both corners of that, small things really she thought as she rolled her eyes waiting until she had heard the last cop comment as she rolled her eyes. Eloped and pregnant and was this the reason Lucas was in a bar? Rachel was struggling to understand the man let along try not to go all cop on him because punching a sigh wasnt exactly normal for her. From what she had seen so far it was even hard to believe that the two Murphy’s were even related given their completely different attitudes and temperaments.
Rachel took a breath as she dusted herself down hoping to get rid of any signs she had fallen over. Sure her knee of her jeans were now torn but that was fashionable right. Rachel stepped into the street light so Braden could see her as she stayed far enough away hoping to give Lucas some peace or space or whatever it was he wanted. “I’m sorry okay.” She said with a sigh looking at Lucas, “I don’t know what is wrong or what’s going on but sorry I caused a problem.”
Apologies, yeah she wasnt usually one for making them unless it was to Braden but this time she felt it was required. “Braden, I caused the problem here but Lucas probably needs some kind of medical attention for his hand... the sign might have fought back.” She stated trying not to say anything that could possibly make this situation worse as she glanced back at the bar and saw the seat outside it. “Now I’m not going all cop on anyone here but you two need to figure your stuff out.” Rachel said firmly not wanting to glare at either of them but maybe a stern look was passed from her.
“We’re family like it or not, you’re having a child and you’ve got a daughter that needs to know her uncle. I am not needlessly losing another family member so you two can work it out or we call can. And I am sorry to both of you for causing this mess in the first place, but you’re in the same space so it’s worked out in my mind.” Rachel stated as she looked between them both. She had lost her brother to the job not too long ago so she didnt want either Murphy to be in the position of things unsaid or should have dones. No she had enough of that herself so in her mind, if it took locking the two in a room together she would do it.

[attr="class","bradennah"] [attr="class","bradenleft"] [attr="class","bradenleft2"] | [attr="class","bradenright"] Judging by the way Lucas had reacted, the situation – whatever the situation actually was – had gone to hell in a handbasket. Apparently with express delivery, but outside the bar wasn't the place to have this conversation: it was cold, Lucas and Rachel had both probably had too much to drink, and tempers were flaring. At this point, having them both in the same vehicle together might cause a nuclear meltdown, but the choice had long since been taken out of their hands. "You've both been drinking. Get in the SUV."Trying to be too authoritarian with Lucas often had a way of backfiring – a lesson Braden had long ago learned. You could be stern with him, but pushing too hard too fast was never the correct approach. If Braden hadn't been so set on taking over as a parent, and focused instead on being a brother, some of their early, formative spats might very well have been avoided. He could tell when Lucas had fallen into his own headspace, taking the time to understand the younger man's perspective. In the past, something that Braden would have failed to do, but he had the benefit of being older and wiser now. So Braden listened – letting his brother voice his piece – without interruption. "Right now, Lucas, I'm your brother. Not a cop." The news – equal parts concerning and exciting – pushed Braden back into a familiar role. One that he'd shared more with Ciara and Katie than with Lucas. While things had been on the mend between them, old wounds took time to heal. Thoughtfully considering everything Lucas had said, Braden finally spoke, questioning where the two stood, given Meg's state of mind. "If you were to that point in your relationship, you had to know a kid might be possible. You never had any discussions about it?" Braden wasn't pointing any fingers – at Lucas or Meg – just trying to better grasp the situation. Part of the blame for this toxic atmosphere, Braden knew, lay with him. One thing he'd always avoided doing with Rachel was talking about Lucas – both before the wedding and, even now, since his brother had started turning his life around. Perhaps, Braden reasoned, he should have expected things to go sour, if the two of them were left to their devices. For now, one problem at a time. Lucas glared at Braden for his straight forward comment. “One Asshat, I know I am drunk. Two I wasn’t planning on driving anywhere.” He retorted. He had mostly been ignoring Rachel blabbering up until this point. No, she could talk all she wanted and he wasn’t going to satisfy her with an answer. He could punch a sign all he wanted, it was better than a person or getting behind the car and street racing to take out his aggression as he would have done at a much younger age. Then they were somewhere between medical attention and him hitting the sign. No, it was better than sign than Rachel but he wasn’t about to say that. He’d been in numerous issues where he’d hit a woman. That wouldn’t have stopped him in previous years. “My hand will live and you don’t get to go around demanding what I need to and need not to do Rachel. You are not my mother!” First Braden had tried to take the place of a parental and now his wife. No. Lucas wasn’t going to have it. “Just stay out of it Rachel. None of this concerns you.” Then to make matters worse Braden asked him if Meghan and him had even discussed children. “That’s not the issue here Asshat. You seriously didn’t listen to a word I just said. You just assume this is an accident and that I don’t want kids.” Lucas slammed the back door to the SUV letting Rachel have the front seat. Lucas got as far away from Rachel as he could get. “I’m concerned about my wife’s mental health if that’s all the same to you.” That’s what set him apart from his father, though Lucas failed to see it most of the time. Lucas drank like this every once in a while but never to the point where he couldn’t take care of his family. That didn’t mean he didn’t fear slipping into his dad’s footprints. Lucas wouldn’t express the fear of turning into Patrick. Though he skirted the outs of it a bit. “Meg deserves better than how Patrick treated mom. My kid deserves better than what Patrick put us through! Put Mom through!” Lucas was the one who seemed to get all of Patrick’s worst traits while Braden had been the mother’s golden child, could do no wrong. “Meg's mental health has taken quite a slide since the discussion you assume I didn’t have.” Lucas wasn’t one to express his emotions in words. No, he took his worry out in anger. Anger he’d since learned to curb. Had it been a few years earlier and Rachel’s head might have been denting the sign and not Lucas’ fist. Lucas wanted no part of Rachel’s input. He’d gone to the bar to clear his mind before Meg got off of work. He was going to call a cab and go home; but Rachel had practically made that impossible. Forcing Lucas to talk hadn’t earrned her any favors. There was going to be a grudge. It was likely that Lucas would ignore her, given that insulting her would only piss Braden off. She’d forced him into talking, so now he was like a ticking time bomb and while he was talking it would likely not be productive. On top of which he’d likely bury all the rest of his emotions on it from there on out. Once Lucas ‘discussed things’ that was the end of it. There would be no second chances.

Rachel knew she could take care of herself and even if Lucas had tried to raise a hand to her. He would have been retrieving his hand from his ass while his fingers tickled his tonsils. Then she was compared to the Murphy’s mother, someone she had never met as Rachel just glared at Lucas. Yeah this wasnt a picnic at all and she wished she had just gone home that evening. No out with friends or work just straight home to the family she loved more than anything else.
“I’m not your mother but you hit a sign so yeah your hand needs looked at.” Rachel stated deciding not calling Lucas names was the best thing she could do. She had a bunch lined up too but given Braden was there, annoying the brothers anymore than she had to no it wasnt a great idea. “It concerns my family and my husband so yeah, bite me for taking an interest.” She added glaring at Lucas as she cringed hearing the word Asshat again. Then it was Braden who was telling her to get into the car, her eyes almost pleaded with him to say no.
She might have argued over it had the reason for the meltdown not have gotten into the SUV already. “Two and a bit beers, nothing more and fine.” Rachel said pulling the front passenger door open as she got in. No she wanted Braden to know she wasnt completely drunk, a little tipsy due to her lack of consistency with it. A fact she was sure her family would frown upon with her Irish heritage but Rachel wasnt about to start taking to bottles anytime soon if ever.
Rachel listened to Lucas talk about turning into Patrick, she could only look at her husband for a moment trying not to show any hint of sadness about it all. The one thing she was certain of was Braden, he was the man of her dreams and yes she knew no one was perfect but for him he was pretty close to it. She knew he never drank and was a fantastic father and husband and pulling him out of a bar wasnt something she had ever had to do. Rachel didnt know what she had managed to get into with Lucas, he had an issue with cops yes. His brother sure but her lack of information made filling in the blanks difficult.
Rachel rested her head against the window as she listened and kept her mouth shut, she didnt need to make matters worse by added her own ideas into the mix. For one she knew what having a baby did, the fear that went along with it all and then the terror that it was all real and you had to look after a baby. Yeah she could see how someone’s mental health could go a little haywire with that. Rachel shuffled in the front seat trying not to listen to the two of them but if it helped her understand what was going on between the two brothers, Meg and Lucas and why she had managed to land herself in the bad books that evening. It was worth a shot, plus she was a cop she was naturally curious.
