it's a sign of my obsession ||Bobby heard his six year old scream on top of her lungs from her room as he placed in the plate into the dishwasher, closed the door and started it up, before looking up at Colin, knowing the boy must have done something. “ Don’t look at me like that,” Colin told his father, “ I haven’t been to her room and I haven’t touched her stuff.” Seeing the look his father gave him, “ Honestly.” Why would he? It was girly and stuffed toys and pink. Both father and son noticed the stomping of the feet that landed to the last step of stairs, “ Fix him,” Sophia told him, “ Mr Bunny’s head fell off.” Thick tears rolled down her eyes. Sighing at the sight before him, the Guards Officer walked over and scooped the girl in his arms, kissed her cheek, wiped the tears then he inspected the broken toy. Mr Bunny did appear to have met a fateful end of having his head torn off. Combination of age, being manhandled by the then three-year-old who was now six, over washing the white soft rabbit every time he got dirty had taken its toll. “ Daddy can’t fix him,” Bobby told her, and heard a whine, and saw a fallen face. THAT fallen face, the one Bobby would have done anything to wipe it off. “ Fixing Mr Bunny is Mommy’s fort.” At least he hoped it was. He couldn’t sew to save his life, much less help Mr Bunny. She poked her finger on the chest, “ Fix him,” she repeated, “ Mommy’s not here. So Daddy has to fix him.”
“ Sweet-” he never finished his words when the doorbell rang, “ Colin can you please get that.” He asked his son as father and daughter moved towards the lounge, sitting he placed the girl in his lap, “ How about we wait till Mom come back home?” Oh wrong words spoken, he realised when his baby girl broke into sobs. “ Sophia,” he cradled the girl. He knew it was going to be along night, his daughter was tired and sleepy, yet refused to go to bed; getting her to understand was going to be a challenge. He faced the woman, motioned her in, “ You must be Gabriela Casey,” he spoke, “ Captain Robert Oxford, Coast Guards.” He held out a hand, only to realise he was holding Mr Bunny, putting the broken toy in the other day, he held his hand out again. Gabby was still in two minds about the swap, a different place a different family. She knew she was a nightmare to get along with on her best days but being put with someone who had no idea of her at all. All she could hope was that she got along and could manage out the week without a meltdown of any kind. It would be fine she told herself not sure what to expect but then really there was likely someone else out there wondering the same about Matt so likely it was safer to just jump head first into things.
She made the drive over to the address she was given to meet the man by the name of Robert Oxford, the surname sounded familiar from her brother’s work with CPD but then lots of names did at times. Gabby, bag in hand made her way up to the front door her finger was about to touch the doorbell when she heard the voices from inside. Honestly, fix him and Mr Bunny oh this was going to be fun she thought trying not to walk herself back to her car.
It was experience right, she was going to have a child within seven months so it was life experience. A guide as to what to expect she told herself taking a nervous breath as she rang the door bell and waited to see what she was coming into. Gabby smiled as the door opened though to her surprise it was a child as she held her hand out for a moment. “Hi, I’m Gabriela.” She said as she moved into the house to try and find Robert Oxford. This was going to be some case of thrown in at the deep end she thought silently as she smiled when she saw the girl in the mans arms.
Her gaze lingered for a moment as she nodded. “Oh yes I’m Gabriela Casey, Paramedic.” She said smiling as she nodded holding out her hand only to see Mr Bunny in his. She shook his other free hand once he held it out again. “Pleasure to meet you Captain Oxford, Coast Guards.” Gabby glanced at the little girl for a moment. “Is everything okay or do you need a hand with anything?” She asked wanting to be of help if she could be at least. There seemed to be a lot going on and a meltdown with a child was tough to deal with though she was glad that was later years and not in the first year or so she hoped.
@bobby, (Great post and fantastic meltdown)

it's a sign of my obsession ||Colin let her in as he opened the door widely. His family was expecting her. He didn’t like the idea of his mother going away for a week. Coast Guards had taken his dad for months on end. “ I’m Colin,” he greeted her before guiding her inside after closing the door. As expected his father was already on top of things. Colin gave a nod and moved to his father’s side. Bobby nodded and moments later chuckled, it was going to be an interesting week. Beside him Sophia giggled, buried her face in the crock his neck before looking at Gabby again, “ Daddy works for the Coast Guards,” the girl pointed out. At least she was giggling, and not being upset. Then rubbed her eyes and let out a yawn. Distractions, Bobby mused, worked every time. “ Please take a seat,” he gestured. And noticed Sophia already settling in his arms and soon would be out like a light. At her question, he looked at the bunny, “ Everything is fine,” he told her, “ unless you know how fix him up.” Bobby held the almost beheaded bunny. But Bobby wasn’t counting on it for now. He could just by his daughter a new one. Placing the toy on the table, “ Can I get you anything to drink, to eat?” he offered. you're my sweetest sin |

Gabby smiled at Colin as she followed him inside. “Nice to meet you Colin. I'm Gabriela.” She said though she could barely shake the feeling she was intruding on someone else’s family. It seemed to be a great idea to get to know the others in service in the city but the practice was far more nerve wracking than she had first thought it would be. For some reason she had overlooked the whole going to live with another family for a week. It had sounded like fun at the time but then now she felt as if she had just walked into someone’s life.
Hearing Sophia giggle Gabby smiled at her. “Oh he does? I bet that is a very interesting job to have.” She said grinning as she watched the girl rub her eyes and yawn. At the gesture to sit Gabby did just that as she watched the girl in awe of the man. He seemed to be great with kids, it was something she could only wish to be though make a week of practice would be a good thing. The bunny was lucky it was only stuffed she thought seeing the beheaded toy placed on the table.
“Some bandages and a plaster or two he could be fixed right up.” She said optimistically, “And a needle and thread if you have it.” Gabby had learned young to sew up her own toys. It was one of the handy things her brother had taught her after she had come home to a stuffed toy massacre after school and the subsequent argument that ensued afterwards. Eventually there was nothing more she could do to keep their heads and arms on but then by that time she had grown out of them or at least for a few years.
“Oh thank you but I’m okay.” She said to the offer of anything to drink or eat. “Urm, Is there anything I can get you? Have you eaten yet or...” She asked not sure what to do exactly or what she needed to do for the week not that she was against anything but she was unsure what needed to be done.

it's a sign of my obsession ||Colin wasn’t sure about having the woman over, now that she was here. He was only nine years old, almost ten, but what did he knew at that moment. He was still a kid. He moved to the other side of his father. He was expected to behave he knew that. Yet he still wanted his mother here. It was weird to have another female around who wasn’t a family member. Sophia nodded at the question, “ Planes,” she added as her father tucked her in the crook of his arm, as she used his shoulder as a pillow. But she didn’t like him going away. When he had gone she had missed him so much. If Colin decided to go with Coast Guards, she would hurt him. “ I’m Sophia and I’m six.” Bobby shook his head, “ You are a sleepy talker,” he tapped her nose as she grinned and giggled more, but he hoped she didn’t babble in her sleep. Hearing Gabby’s words in regards to fixing the bunny, “ You are a life saver. A needle and a thread along with the bandage would be given. But that can wait till tomorrow.” Looking at his daughter again, “ Happy now?” The girl nodded, Bobby resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Kids! He was sure that he was likely to be a bad influence on his kids as well be a good one. “ Nah,” Rob told her, “ We finished dinner not long ago.” Simon had come over to make sure he hadn’t under or over cooked the food. As his whole family knew, he was a terrible cook. His mother had almost wanted to come and cook just so the kids had decent food while Jamie was away. If Kat had been around she would have done the same. There were moments he did miss his mother-in-law. The two had mutual affection for the each other, that had still been there when he had started to see Jamie again. “ Have you eaten?” He knew missed meals could be a norm. you're my sweetest sin |

Gabby had been sceptical at first, the whole going to stay with another family yes she did enjoy the wild side of life and getting on with others but then stepping into another family she had never met before. It was always going to be a bumpy ride with that though so far no one had started screaming at her, that had to be a bonus of some sort in the end right?
“You fly planes for the coast guard?” She asked, the man had her respect for that as it was tough enough on the ground let alone in mid flight. She smiled watching Sophia used her dads shoulder a pillow as she wondered what Matt would do if their child chose to do that. Yes parenthood was daunting despite her few months with Louie she was still terrified of it. “Nice to meet you too Sophia and six? Never I thought you were ten.” She said with a smile watching Bobby.
“Tomorrow it is then; we’ll bring Bunny back to life for you Sophia.” She said smiling, practice right her brother had given her enough of that though she had refined her technique over the years and now it was mostly practiced if a child needed their toy fixed. Sure she might not be able to mechanically fix a toy but stuffed ones; a repair job was second nature to her mostly. It was nice to see another family interacting, taking time at least to do so. With work and life in general it was mostly a day filled with good mornings and good nights followed by a carry on of a half finished conversation for the past three weeks.
Gabby nodded when he explained they had finished dinner not long ago, she forgot usually what it was like to eat at a normal time some days. The rush between calls or the dinner sat down to then the shrill sound of the klaxon and they all left whatever they had been planning to eat at a moment’s notice. It led the way for the usual snack size, unhealthy grab it while you can sort of dinners but she had long ago realised that food was food no matter what shape or size packet it was in.”I...urm...” Gabby said trying to place the last time she had eaten. “Yeah, today at some point.” She said still wondering exactly when that had been though she distinctly remembered a granola bar at some point.

it's a sign of my obsession ||Both siblings looked at each other as Gabby had asked, but both would have manage without their mother for few days. It wasn’t like she wasn’t a phone call away. That was that their parents had told them. Bobby smiled a little and nodded, “ I do,” he replied. For a man who had needed Simon’s help with Math, he had done just fine with flying planes. For him it was now a second nature. He was not crazy enough to fly when he was half a sleep. He didn’t want to find out what would kill him faster; the plane or Jamie. But he money was on the plane. Sophia grinned, “ I’m not that big yet,” she protested, “ Colin’s almost ten.” Her eyes dropped but the girl was fighting now to stay awake. But knew she would lose. Noticing the girl’s was almost there, “ I’m going to put her to bed and then I’ll heat or make the food for you.” Shaking Sophia light, “ Wanna say goodnight?” the girl looked at Gabby, “ Good Night, Miss Gabby.” He heard Colin do the same and took both kids to their rooms. Five minutes later, he was back downstairs, “ We have chicken, fish, or I can make a sandwich if you eat light during the evening.” He could re-heat the chicken, pan fry the fish and last one was quick and easy. you're my sweetest sin |

Gabby grinned when Robert confirmed it, so yes she was talking to a real live pilot and maybe she was a little awestruck by that though it was one of those things. A fire-fighter she had no star struck moment, cop, paramedic but a pilot they had the coolest job in the world and flying for the coast guard. She had to stop herself from the barrage of questions that had just popped into her mind about it.
“That is the coolest job in the entire world.” She said trying to keep the excitement from her voice and failed. “And thank you for what you do. I know you’ve probably heard it a thousand times but still. It’s awesome.” Well that was her epic fail for ‘hey meet a coast guard pilot’ as she could feel the red blush in her cheek grow further as she realised how insane she must have sounded.
Gabby nodded at Sophia’s correction as she smiled seeing the eyes on the girl drop. “Okay thank you and night Sophia and Colin, nice to meet you both.” Gabby stated smiling as Robert left with the children. If she could be half as good a parent as Robert was she would he happy, the task was still daunting to her okay so she was terrified. She was good when it was someone else’s kid or mostly okay but her own. There were days when she had no idea what she was doing in her own life let along with a child as well.
No, she need to focus on not acting like she was a teenager though given what she had said so far she wanted to smack herself for it and throw herself out. This was going to be a week of unknowns she thought as she glanced around when she heard Robert coming back downstairs. “Oh nothing too stressful, just a sandwich would be great thank you.” Gabby said regretting not eating before she left, there were days when she had no clue what she had eaten and others where every meal was left because of a call. “Sorry I should have figured this out myself before I arrived. I just... crazy schedule.” She explained hoping that made up for it even if she seemed a little scatter brained for it.

it's a sign of my obsession ||Bobby was amused by her excitement. It wasn’t everyday he had someone in awe, unless it was a child he was passing by. Or even his own nephews when they had been young. Her reaction was similar to his oldest nephew Liam, who was now a pilot for US Navy. He was sure the boy’s father was ready to kill him over this. It wasn’t his fault that Liam had ended up with hero worship. Chuckling, he looked at her, “ You are sounding like my nephew.” Then shook his head, “ I hear it a lot. From different people. Sometimes it does get old.” “ Besides,” he turned to get the food out of the fridge, “ I could say the same about your field, firefighters and cops. Risks are more or less the same.” Yet what they did, wasn’t any less then what he did for his country. Going off to wars and whatnot as it was ordered wasn’t easy. Leaving behind family, friends. The only difference in his case was, whether he returned home alive or in a bag. Yet it did apply to all the members of the military when they were ordered to go to the front line. Putting everything on the bench, “ So,” he rubbed his hands, “ Any food allergies or restrictions I should be aware of? Before I start making the sandwich.” He was surprised by how many allergies people had these days. But he didn’t want remake it if that was going to be the case. He waved her apology away, and gave her long look, “ You are talking to a man whose wife is a cop. If there is one thing I understand is …that’s crazy hours.” If he had to harp Jamie to eat -even if meant getting his own head bitten off- he would. you're my sweetest sin |

Gabby smiled and could feel the burning in her cheeks of embarrassment for being too excited over meeting a coast guard pilot. “Sorry I guess I forget that part.” She said furrowing her brow wondering how she could have been as dense as to not think of it. “But it’s true though everyone appreciates it and you guys make flying look amazing. For the people on the ground, it’s like a magic air ship and mixed with Top Gun the movie... you can do no wrong.” She stated smiling.
Gabby watched him turn and get the food out of the fridge as she shook her head. “Yeah you could and sure the risks are about the same but it’s not true. You are the ones who make it look cool, cops and fire-fighters we just stick to the ground and wave up at you guys. Besides who do we call when were stuck with water, always call the coast guard.” She explained which sure there had been a few water rescues in her time and the coast guard had always been there to help out. Not that she was the one swimming or trying to for that matter, her feet were firmly on the harbour or ground there was no chance she was getting near the water’s edge in Chicago.
“Allergies and restrictions none, only one slight thing. I am pregnant so no raw eggs and so on if that's alright with you?” Gabby asked having been mostly extra careful with her diet given what had happened the first time. She was hardly obsessive but then her job hardly ever allowed her to be when food was often left or cold or just out of the first packet she could see. “Thanks, but I’ve no idea how you do it. Three children and you both work dangerous full time jobs. You guys are rock stars.” She said having no idea how they managed it at all or how they managed to keep everything going.

it's a sign of my obsession ||Bobby chuckled at her words. Her excitement did remind him of Liam's when he had been in elementary school. But the only difference between Gabby and Liam was that of the age. Yet he could clearly remember that the boy had talked his ear off after the air show. For sake Sue's sake he had tried to curb the eagerness when his nephew had all but declared that he was going to be a pilot like his Uncle Bobby. That Bobby knew had been the beginning of an end of discussion. " Don't be," he told her, " it is a nice reminder of my nephews reaction. I'm totally relaying this story to him." There was slight mean glint in his eyes. It was payback time. At her smile, he shook his head, leaned over, " I will let you out on a secret," his voice was a whisper, " it is top gun." On the other hand. He was teasing her. He was sure the being in a different house would be awkward. " Besides one wrong move can cost us our lives. So there is that. And if we get stuck with a fire, who do you think we gonna call? Hint, it's not ghostbusters." When she mentioned pregnancy, he nodded, " We are looking at restrictions then. And few things other than raw eggs." He placed the salmon, smoked ham and few other items aside. " So a turkey sandwich?" He asked and moved to prepare that and kept speaking as he made it, " Best to avoid soft cheese. Especially during pregnancy. As for how we manage it, you kinda learn to figure out a balance. Colin was two years old when it hit us that taking turns might be better. Then both of us giving attention at the same time. By the time you have a second kid, you have better understanding of how to manage time." Spreading the cranberry sauce, " Having helping family works wonders. My cousin and his wife don't live that far from here, so they take the kids when both of us need a time out for ourselves. Right now, I'm Mr Mom." Placing the plate before her. And he did not mind being Mr mom one bit, " Just make sure that one of you is available for the kid. Not going to be easy, but it will be better than nothing." He was there during the day and night and the kids had both of them at night or day, depending on Jamie's shifts. [ WORDS ] [ Who the heck let him go wordy on me? Gabby could feel the blush rise in her cheeks when he mentioned relaying the story to his nephew. Not only had she just gone all fan girl on a guy she hardly knew but now his nephew was going to hear about it. If she had a hole to jump into she might have done as she smirked for a moment seeing the slight mean glint in his eyes. Oh she knew that look, she was used to wearing it herself when the time was right for jokes or just being her usual self. “Oh you can tell him, just tell him not to expect the same reaction. If he isn’t Coast Guard then he’s no good.” She teased though any pilot she guessed she would have the same mad excitement.
She leaned in a little when his voice was a whisper, “Wow.” She stated grinning, “Like serious Top Gun? Tom Cruise, fast planes and volleyball Top Gun?” She asked having always figured it would be though she had little inside knowledge of it at all as Bobby was the first pilot she had known at all. Nope she was back to being star struck and believing his every word on the matter. “Serious Ghostbusters are the go to guys and fire yeah I’m sure you would be able to fly over it and put it out. You guys are cool that way.” She said grinning though so long as no one was hurt a trip to put out a fire at a base.
Well that was one she was ready to be there for not that she shied away from others but some calls were cooler. “Restrictions, I swear that word I hear more now than ever before.” She said with a sigh still getting used to her list of yes eat this and nooo never touch that. “Sure turkey sounds great.” Gabby stated as she raised a brow at the soft cheese. “Are we being serious here, soft cheese has it’s own food group in my head.” She said though sure if it was a rule then she was trying her best to stay away from the bad stuff.
“We adopted one and then he went back to his biological family but this, taking turns. How do you manage not freaking out over everything even with two or three?” Gabby asked knowing as soon as their kid sneezed she would be there with cold remedies by the tonne. It was still a bit of a surprise that they were having a child let alone getting to the point where they had to do much else. “Congratulations Mr. Mum and yeah fire house family, I guess we have a house full of baby sitters if we need them.” Gabby said though trusting any one of them with her child, nope it was nanny cam all the way.
Gabby smiled as she took a bite of the sandwich. “Thank you and you’re great at making sandwiches.” She stated enjoying every bite she took, food tasted great and yes it might be a strange time of day to be eating but then it was good, who cared? “I will take that advice, I swapped jobs back to paramedic because well you know the risks and one parent is better than none right. Not that I think I won’t get home but on Truck there were a few days when it hardly seemed possible.” She explained though now Matt was on Truck still and she was a paramedic it was working out or so far it was.
(It is great and no problem at all Australian requirements are fine with me, no idea what the US would be as I'm a Brit so I guess everything will be different but we can go with the Australian version is fine with me.)

it's a sign of my obsession ||He chuckled, “ My nephew is a navy pilot,” he clarified, seeing the blush, “ he is my eldest cousin’s son. The kid is good at what he does.” While Liam had followed Matt into Navy, he had followed Bobby when it came to being a pilot. He had always come to Bobby for advice and sharing concerns in general. He let out a bark of laughter at her reaction, “ I can say fast planes, I’m not sure about Tom Cruise or Volleyball. I’m a baseball geek.” Who the heck was Tom Cruise? He wondered. And shook his head, “ If they have Slimer, they are cleaning up this house.” The kids might squeak about the slime, cleaning it was not going to be fun. He tired not smiling at her comments about restrictions on food, “ Sorry,” he shrugged, “ Some are lifted after a certain time. I know it’s not easy keeping away from some foods.” He nodded at her question, “ I’m very serious. It’s more due to moisture and bacteria that’s possibly might be there, if the temps and conditions are right. Not exactly safe to consume when you are expecting.” He knew too well about playing with kids and handling them back to their parents, “ Kinda gives you a glimpse of what it would be like.” He picked a slice of ham and shoved it in his mouth, after few chews, “ As not everything is worth freaking over. You don’t really want project your own fear in your child. The fact is once they start walking, they are going fall and they need to learn to get back up. You can’t do that for them. They go to a park, they are going to fall and scrape a knee or elbow. It’s a learning experience for them, part of childhood. When you have a second child, you have more experience under your belt, more awareness of what to do and what not to do. By the time you have a third, you are pretty much a pro.” He knew the first child was always the hardest, when one had no experience. He gave a chuckle at her comment, “ Thanks.” He gave a nod when she mentioned his sandwich making skills. Sound advice always helps. “ My pleasure, if you need more advice, ask away. After you have finished eating, I’ll so you to Sophia’s room.” [ so many WORDS created ] [ Tom Cruise joke.......haha!! Gabby stared at Bobby for a moment as she grinned, “Oh I have no doubt but the Navy, naw I’m so team Coast Guard besides if the Navy came too close to the fire house... there’s bigger issues than can be solved with a ladder and a hose.” Gabby said grinning; she had family who had served but nothing remotely as cool as coast guard or Navy but from what she understood the coast guard was much better in her book.
“Not sure about Tom Cruise, you are Tom Cruise or at least Maverick and baseball geek, that works too because now you are officially invited to take part as an honorary fifty one fire-fighter for the baseball game with the CPD.” She said before she realised that his wife worked for the CPD, yeah like that was going to be an easy option to take. “Before you say it, we have better cookies and a better team and I’ve got a week here to prove that to you.” Gabby said laughing about Slimer. “Yuck, slimer they are on their own. Goup everywhere is not a fun thing.”
Food, it was the one thing she forgot about and now she was pregnant it just made things a whole lot more complicated as to what her diet was. “Not easy keeping away from most of it but then I forget like today and it’s easy enough when it’s not in your head.” She said with a sigh as she listened to the reasons why food could be dangerous. “Seems like you’ve done this before.” She joked smirking, “Yeah I get it but I like my food and you know when hunger strikes it’s first to the fridge at the fire house, it can turn ugly too depending on who’s food you sneak out.”
Gabby was sure war’s had been fought on lesser grounds at times. The glimpse was the thing that terrified her, she had glimpsed her brothers children and yes for the few hours she baby sat them it was great but it was the part after that. The tantrums, tears, worry and everything else that came with it, that was the scary part. “Well as a paramedic I guess I should never freak out but then, as a medic I see what a fall can do so trying not to be the panicked parent it a long shot, I guess at least I’ll know what to do with a plaster just in case but I’ve really no idea what I’ve gotten myself in for have I?” She questioned not really wanting to know the truthful answer to that.
“Any advice I’d be grateful for.” Gabby said as she took another few bites of the sandwich before she shook her head. “No please, I can’t let your daughter move because of me. I can take the couch, it’s fine because if I can sleep in an ambulance then a couch is the Ritz.” Gabby said not wanting to put anyone out for the evening.

it's a sign of my obsession ||He shook his head at her team Coast Guards rather than team US Navy. In his family there were more Naval Officers then Coast Guards, but they also had one Army boy. His father still hadn’t forgiven Travis for going into Army. But Bobby knew his father was proud of what his nephew had achieved. “ What bigger issue?” he mused as he leaned back. He let out an amused snort about the cookie, “ I might have to brush up my baseball skills,” his mind was already running in motion with what training he need, “ I haven’t played in more than 20 years. If we lose, don’t blame me.” If he could get his skills to par, fire-fighters could win by a mile against the CPD. Hopefully his wife wouldn’t be pi$$ed at him over this. He could chalk it to a friendly game between the two groups. Biting back a smile, “ Prove away.” Of course, he had done it before, three times to be precise, “ I have,” he answered, “ three times to be exact. Three tiny proofs are sleeping upstairs.” He listened as Gabby went on about her experience with kids, he had been in the same boat, with his cousin’s kids, “ Not with the first one you don’t know what you have gotten into, but trust me, once things settle, you won’t want it any other way.” “ I set a folding bed in her room,” he cleared the confusion, “ with Jamie gone, So’s likely to come in and sleep in the bed with me in the middle of the night.” you're my sweetest sin |
