Evelyn rubbed her forehead and sighed as she held the phone to her ear underneath her dirty blind curls, “Well if he wants them moved then he can take care of it. I don't want you getting mixed up in that kind of stuff, Anthony.” She listened again as her son worked to convince her. “What is it?...I know a few crates, a few crates of what?” She asked, considering his request. She looked to the floor before lifting her head and pursing her lips as she listened. Of course she gave into him be it somewhat reluctantly, knowing helping him was probably the best way of stopping him getting in over his head. That was her job as his mother right, stop him getting in over his head, “Alright, you can move the crates through the restaurant this once. Only because it's his deal and not yours. But I want this to be the last time you have anything to do with these kinds of shady deals, you hear me? You know I don't like you being involved in your great uncle's business.” True she didn't like it at all, but Anthony was drawn to that lifestyle and as much as Evelyn tried, she couldn't keep him away from it completely. “Ok, I'll see you then. Just be careful, baby. I love you.” With that she hung up the phone. “Damn it.” She said out loud with motherly frustration. As much as she tried to keep her son away from a lifestyle of crime he was now transporting smuggled goods on her uncles behalf. And seeing as she made a lot of her living through the smuggling business she couldn't help wonder if this was her fault as she leaned against the kitchen counter, after all the apple never falls far from the tree. |

Casey let out an inaudible sigh as she closed the refrigerator. This was the second week in a row that Casey has allowed her food ration to run dry; and it was really starting to bother her with this little habit she had garnered. Here it was lunch time and she had nothing that would satisfy her hunger. Putting her hair up in a loose ponytail; Casey glanced up at the clock that hung over her kitchen table; and decided that she could kill two birds with one stone. She would go out to eat on her way to the store; and to Casey; it was a good reason to check out that Italian restaurant that she had been wanting to try. Making up her mind; Casey grabbed her purse and made sure everything was turned off before heading out the door and down the sidewalk. It was a relatively nice day in Chicago; albeit a bit chilly. The cold didn't bother Casey though as she usually ran every morning; when it was still super cold out. Casey smiled at a couple of children that were playing in their yards; but otherwise the streets were quiet. Chicago may be a busy city; at least to Casey it was; but she could always count on it being peaceful in it's own way. Casey sped up to a jog so she could get her exercise in before devouring something that was unhealthy. She could only imagine what her friend would say. Probably make a smart ass remark about how she shouldn't even bother trying to get in shape if she was just going to pig out on junk. Smiling to herself; Casey shook her head. A couple of blocks later; Casey would up outside of the Italian diner only slightly out of breath. Making sure she looked decent; Casey entered the restaurant. Looking around; Casey spotted a table near the front and walked over to it and sat down; taking in her surroundings as she did. The place was wasn't too big but was spacious enough to host quite a few people. Casey noted the decorations and couldn't help but appreciate that the owner had good taste. She turned her attention to the menu that already sat on the table; waiting for someone to come wait on her.

Evelyn spent to morning thinking about that phone call with her son as she chopped all the fresh tomatoes that would be used in the sauces that day. Had she done the right thing agreeing to let him move those questionable goods through her restaurant? But it was too late now anyway. The crates of, well she still didn't know what was going to be in them, but the crates were already on their way and would somehow be arriving on a Sunshine delivery lorry at 2 o'clock and would blend in nicely amongst a delivery of supplies for the restaurant. The crates would only have to sit in the back for a few hours until nightfall, then Anthony and his cohorts could take them to the buyer, make the drop on his great Uncles behalf and be done with it. That's simple enough right? She thought to herself. Anthony's a very smart boy, he can manage that. She told herself to ease her own mind...Oh if only he would put his intelligence to better use, he could make so much out of himself if he tried. But Anthony's choices were his own and he had already decided to make this deal. There was only so much a mother could do. Evelyn had two choices, she could twiddle her thumbs while she waited for tonight to come and then be done with, or until then she could focused on her other baby - Her restaurant. And that's what she did, after working in the kitchen and prepping for opening time all morning she decided it was time she went out to be around the customers. As hard work as it could be sometimes Evelyn enjoyed the lunchtime rush, and unlike some restaurant owners she liked being on the front lines serving and talking to customers, though dinner time was probably her favorite time in the restaurant. She had started out with nothing and now she had a steady stream of customers most weeks and that was rather satisfying. "Table six needs clearin', Louise. And table fawr would like anotha glass of Vino." She told her waitress as she worked to make sure everything was running as smoothly as possible in her restaurant as he went around a while greeting customers, showing a couple of people free tables and taking an order here and there. She had a genuine smile on her face as she talked with people and watched as her restaurant got busier with the lunchtime rush. She walked over to the pretty redhead who was sitting alone and greeted her with a smile, " Hellow." She said cheerfully, " Have you been here befaw?" She asked with a pleasant smile. The girl was young and very pretty, almost too pretty to be sitting alone so Evelyn wasn't sure if she was mayby waiting for someone or if she was ready to order, "Wood you like to awder uh drink aw do you need another minute?" She asked politely, her New York accent evident and clear, though it was not overpowering. Tag: @amberrae. Ooc: ^^^Yeah my first and last attempt to write a New York accent lol. Tag: Evelyn Stefani Bowers Word Count: 318 OC Note: Ha ha, I kind of liked the New York accent myself. Don't hold back if you don't want to. Fettuccine is a hard word to say whether you're dyslexic or not I think. Lol. Anyway, here's my late respondent. Again, apologies about that.
Casey's eyes roamed the menu; trying to figure out what she wanted to eat. Everything on the menu just looked so appetizing and the young redhead couldn't decide on what she wanted. Having decided that she'd get a salad as a side; Casey used her left index finger looking for something that she could eat for the main meal. The young redhead glanced down the list that was on the luncheon side of the menu until her eyes landed on something she liked which was located in the pasta section. Satisfied that she had her order ready; Casey folded the menu and waited for someone to come help her. Casey used the time waiting to do another once over of the restaurant. Without having to tour the whole place; Casey could feel the homey vibe that a lot of restaurants lacked and it made her appreciate the Italian restaurant more than she thought she would. Her eyes landed on a woman that was walking over toward her; and Casey gave the woman a small smile; not wanting to be rude. Her lips twitched as the woman greeted her. The woman had a strong accent but Casey couldn't figure out where she had heard it from. Arching an eyebrow; Casey blinked; making sure that she wasn't making the woman uncomfortable. “Good afternoon madame.” she responded politely before opening the menu once more. “Yes. Um, I would like this.” Casey pointed at the Fettuccine Alfredo. “I think it's called a um, Fet-uh-seen Alfredo? I think that's right?” Casey blushed, hoping that the blond woman wouldn't laugh at her. “I'd like that with a Caesar salad and a glass of water please” Casey folded the menu and handed it to the blond before giving the woman an embarrassed smile. “I hope you don't mind my asking; but where are you from? I love your accent.”

Evelyn gave a light, friendly smile when Casey greeted her and poised pen to notepad ready to take her order. She smiled broadly when the young lady pointed to the Fettuccine Alfredo and tried to pronounce it. She was not laughing at her in any way, on the contrary she thought the girl was sweet and her attempt to pronounce the dish was endearing. "It's Fet-uh-chee-nee." She smiled, letting Casey know how to say it in a way that wouldn't make her feel stupid or embarrassed at all. "Or fet-toot-chee-ne!" She said pronouncing it with a proud Italian accent, playing up her Italian heritage and flaring her arm for a fun dramatic emphasis. “I'd like that with a Caesar salad and a glass of water please”
"Sure thing sweetie." She said as she wrote the order down. “I hope you don't mind my asking; but where are you from? I love your accent.”
Evelyn smiled, "Thank you. I'm a New Yorker, but I'm from an Italian/New York heritage." She put her notepad back in her pocket, "But I moved here years ago. Guess you can take the girl out of New York, but you can't take New York out of the girl." She said with a shrug and a smile. "I'm Evelyn by the way." She said as she took Casey's menu and tucked it under her arm, getting it out of the way. Tag: @amberrae. |

Casey gave the waitress a grateful smile. It seemed like today would be one of the days where she actually got a waitress who enjoyed doing their job. It was quite a relief from the usual waitresses she dealt with; who thought that she wasn't worth their time or they didn't know how to do their jobs properly. Handing the woman her menu; Casey crossed her fingers together and looked up at the older woman; a smile still on her face.
“Fet-uh-chee-nee” Casey repeated; testing the word on her lips before nodding in acceptance. “Right. I'll try and remember that the next time I stop by here”. There was no doubt that Casey would be here again. Turning her body around so that she could look at the waitress properly; she nodded as the woman told her about being from a New York/Italian heritage. “I come from two different heritages myself. My father''s French and my mother grew up on a farm.” Feeling that she was sharing too much information; Casey grabbed the napkin that was set on her table and begin folding it; trying to make those swan origami that she saw done on television though she kept her eyes on the woman; who was still there much to her surprise.
“I'm sorry. I tend to talk a lot. I hope I'm not keeping you from your other customers” Casey gave the woman a guilty smile; before deciding to outstretch her hand; like she seen her father done so many times before hoping the woman would take it. “It's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance Evelyn. My name is Casey.”

Evelyn smiled as Casey pronounced the word correctly, there was something about the young lady that she found sweet, but that was probably just her mothers heart kicking in like it usually did around anyone that was in there 20's...well it kicked in around people older than that as well, but not always as strongly sometimes. “Right. I'll try and remember that the next time I stop by here.” That put a different kind of smile on Evelyn's face, hearing that the girl had got a good enough impression from the restaurant to know that would be coming back when she hadn't even tried the food yet. “I come from two different heritages myself. My father''s French and my mother grew up on a farm.” "It's good to know where you're from." Evelyn had been instilled with a strong sense of family loyalty and pride in her heritage. Both were things she would never forget and things her family would never let her forget. "I love hearing about peoples heritage and where people are from, it's so interesting some of the backgrounds people have." She said with an energetic shrug. It wasn't as if she was uncultured growing up with an Italian family while living in the melting pot that was New York before living in another big city that was Chicago, but she loved to hear what other people had seen and done that she hadn't. When Casey apologized for talking Evelyn just waved her hand dismissive, "Ah don't worry about it sweetie."She was terrible for it herself, and was in fact the one who had started chatting in the firs place. "It's not like the boss is gonna yell at me, I own the place." She added with a friendly wink. “It's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance Evelyn. My name is Casey.” "Oh, aren't you a lovely girl." She said as she took her hand and shook it in return, "It's nice make your acquaintance too."
Noticing her trying to fold the napkin in a fancy way Evelyn took another napkin and started folded it, "I can't make the swans, but if you want a fancy folded napkin..." Evelyn finished folding the napkin into a crown and put it next to Casey's place setting... "There you go." She said with a smile. But she couldn't stand there and talk all day she had to serve the girl, it was a restaurant after all, "I'll be right back with your water."
Evelyn took the order to the kitchen before getting Casey her water. She took some other drinks to some of the other before taking Casey her food once it was ready, "There you go sweetie." She said placing the food in front of her, "Buon appetito"Tag: @amberrae. |

Casey smiled up at Evelyn appreciating the fact that the woman didn't make a big deal that she could not pronounce a few certain words. It made life a bit more enjoyable without having to explain to people that she was dyslexic. Not that she had to do a whole lot of reading; unless you counted academy work; but that was a whole another story for the young redhead. Evelyn smiled at her and Casey smiled back; unsure of what else to do. There was something about this atmosphere and maybe the woman herself; but Casey didn't feel like she had to be snarky around this woman. Not that Casey couldn't be nice at any time; but there was usually a few sarcastic comments that came out of her mouth by the time she left a place. Then again, maybe it was the environment and the people she hung around. If they're not snarky with her; then she isn't snarky with them; but she also did enjoy making people blush and angry at times. There was no fun in a world where you couldn't get on people's nerves every now and then. “Yeah, I hear you” Casey nodded; agreeing with the woman. If you didn't know where you came from; then that was something that could make you or break you depending on how you look at it. Casey knew who she was and where she came from. It didn't matter to her if she was the product of a surrogate because her parents were still her parents no matter the blood. Her family may not have been perfect; but who's was? It was how you came out of it that made you a survivor. Casey genuinely laughed as the woman stated that she was the boss. “Yeah, I suppose it makes life easier for you not having to worry about impressing the boss.” Casey tilted her head in thought. “Then again, I suppose it's also harder because it's up to you to keep things running smoothly so that you can impress customers such as myself.”
Casey blushed at being called lovely and looked away for a moment. The woman grabbed another napkin and made a fancy napkin for her before placing it in front of her.Casey smiled at the woman. “Well, it's loads better than what I can do.” Casey rubbed the back of her neck nervously as Evelyn finally walked away to grab her order. It gave her a moment to her thoughts. Sure, she was enjoying herself but she had never gotten along with someone so well the first time she met them. It made her nervous. She smiled gratefully when Evelyn returned with her food. It looked delicious. “Thank you. This looks ravishing” Casey smiled and took a bite to prove her point. She had to stop herself from moaning in pleasure and pain as it was hot; but otherwise, she really enjoyed this food.

Evelyn smiled as Casey genuinely laughed when she told the girl that she was the boss. “Then again, I suppose it's also harder because it's up to you to keep things running smoothly so that you can impress customers such as myself.”Evelyn nodded, "It does takes a certain amount of work and dedication." She admitted. Not to mention that it was also up to her to keep her criminal enterprise running smoothly too, and impressing some her less legitimate customers. And now she had to oversee a delivery of smuggled goods for her son as well, and try to make sure everything goes smoothly to avoid any possible upsets. "But I love it. This place is very close to my heart and a little hard work is more that worth the reward." When Evelyn brought Casey her meal she smiled when the girl said that it looked ravishing. And her smile turned into a chuckle when the young lady took a bite and had to refrain moaning from the heat. Evelyn could tell by Casey's reaction that she thought the food tasted as good as it looks, a fact that pleased Evelyn every time. "Here, on the house." She said as she began pouring Casey a glass of wine that she knew would compliment the meal perfectly, "It the ideal match for Fettuccine." One free glass of wine and some friendly hospitality had proven to be an effective way to make someone's day and to cultivate business, as had been evidenced by her ever growing customer base. "Enjoy." She smiled as she stepped away leaving her to enjoy her food. That was when she saw the delivery van droving past the front of the restaurant. A more serious expression replaced her smiling demeanor and she headed to the kitchen and made her way out the back to meet the lorry. Once the lorry pulled up Evelyn oversaw the delivery as it was unloaded and taken inside. She subtly kept looking around to make sure no-one was watching, not that there was much risk of that given the back of the restaurant offered a comfortable amount of concealment and there was nothing suspicious for prying eyes to note anyway, as the smuggled goods were disguised in crates similar to the ones that the real food supplies came in. It didn't take long to get the delivery inside and all that was left to do was wait until dark when her son would come and get his crates and take them straight to the buyer. In the meantime Evelyn returned inside the restaurant and she went back over to Casey just in time to give her a dessert menu. "Was everything alright with your meal?" She asked. Even though one of the waitressed would have already checked to see everything was alright for Casey mid-meal, "Would you like to see the sweet menu?" She asked as she handed one to her with yet another hospitable smile. Tag: @amberrae . |

Casey nodded as Evelyn explained to her about the worth ethics and the dedication that own a certain business involved. Casey knew all about dedication. It was her dedication that she hadn't quit school yet despite having a learning disability. True, it wasn't as bad as a lot of kids and her parents learnt early on so that she could get the help; but it still took a lot of dedication for Casey to carry on with normal things that came easily for other. Casey smiled once again at the woman before her. “Well, I'm glad you love your job enough to continue running this business successfully. I don't know what I'd go if you decided to close down” Casey complimented Evelyn as she took another bite of her food to prove her point. Casey looked up just as Evelyn showed her a bottle of wine and Casey put up her hand to protest it but Evelyn had already poured the glass. Picking up the glass, Casey eyed Evelyn once to double check that the woman was ok with it and saluted her. “Well, if you insist” Casey took a sip and sighed happily. “Oh, this is delightful. What is it?” She asked; her eyes traveling to the bottle to decipher the name. She nodded her head as Evelyn went about her business. After all, she couldn't accompany Casey the whole dinner. She was grateful for the brief silence as she finished her meal; making sure to sip the wine every few bites. The woman was absolutely correct. There was no way you could enjoy Fettuccine without the wine. It just wasn't as satisfying. She finished her meal quietly, wiped the bit of crumbs off her face with the tip of the napkin before placing her silverware neatly onto the now empty plate. Looking around the place, Casey noticed that she was partly alone aside from one or two customers. Apart from a waitress asking if everything was ok; which she answered to the affirmative; she smiled as Evelyn came up to her a few moments later. “Yes. Everything was ravishing” Casey stated as she accepted the dessert menu. “Don't mind if I do.”
Her eyes roamed for a moment before they caught the attention of something that had cocoa powder in it. “Oh, how about this? Tee-ruh-miss-you?” she asked, pointing at the Tiramisu.

“Well, I'm glad you love your job enough to continue running this business successfully. I don't know what I'd go if you decided to close down”That was great to hear, it was the first time the girl had come to the restaurant and she was already speaking as if she had been going there for years and that it was her favorite place. And Evelyn was pleased to hear that the girl had enjoyed her meal so much when Casey said that everything was ravishing. At the end of the day that was the entire point of her restaurant, to serve people great tasting food that they could really enjoy. She smiled as Casey made her comment before she took the menu, "Oh good. I hate it when pretty girls like you skip dessert even though they're as skinny as a lamppost." She did find it sad when girls wouldn't treat themselves to a dessert when they clearly really wanted one, she could understand not having one every time but to her life was more than just about sights and sound but about food and flavors as well, so she was a strong believer in desserts even if they were just occasional. Tee-ruh-miss-you? A warm grin parted Evelyn's lips, she found the way Casey pronounced things very endearing. Very endearing indeed, "Sure thing." She said giving a her little wink. Evelyn went to the kitchen and put the in the order. 'Miss-you' that was one she really liked and didn't really want to correct. But as she walked the dessert over to Casey she supposed had too, "Here you go, sweetie, Buon appetito." She said with a smile as she placed it in front of Casey. "That's a good choice." She said approvingly. "Not to blow my own trumpet but the chef here makes the best Tiramisu. It's to die for." She added genuinely. Well if you like coffee desserts it was to die for anyway. At least thats how Evelyn felt about it herself. Tag: @amberrae . |

Casey blinked at the skinny comment before blushing at the compliment. She let out a nervous laugh and leaned forward once the menu was taken from her. “Thank you for the compliment, but I love food far too much to suffer just for the sake of following the “skinny” trend.” Casey put air quotes around skinny to get to her point. “I do try and keep it to a minimum as I heard it's a lot easier to lose the weight than to gain it; though it probably helps that I like exercising” Casey shrugged before giving Evelyn a lopsided grin. “Must be hard for you to own a restaurant without wanting to eat everything. I fear I'd eat myself out of the business if I was in your place.” “Thank you” Casey stated as Evelyn winked at her before going to fill her order. Casey looked around, not bothering to hide the smile on her face. What she thought would be a simple dinner turned out to be quite interesting and she hoped that she had made a new friend. Even if Casey would have to come here to see her. She nodded in thanks as Evelyn came back with her desert and Casey tried not to drool at the amazing desert. Casey took a bite and had to hold back another moan as the savory jolted her taste buds. Swallowing the bite, Casey nodded to Evelyn in thanks for the correction. “This is delicious. My new favorite thing” Casey admitted taking another bite.

Evelyn was happy to hear it when Casey said she wasn't interested in keeping up with the skinny trend and she was glad to hear it, she had far to many stick thin women come into her restaurant ordering a leaf of lettuce and a glass of water so they can try and look like the airbrushed models plastered on the front of glossy magazines. "Good for you. I'm too lazy to exercise on a regular basis." She replied when Casey said she worked out a lot. She smiled when Casey said she would eat herself out of business if she ran a restaurant, "Let's just say my pants didn't used to feel quite so tight." She was joking but there was considerable truth to it. Evelyn was pleased to hear the Tiramisu was her new favorite, "Told you." She said with a little smile, " My chef makes the best Tiramisu. But his Burrata Tortellini in tomato sauce is even better...And it's the main reason why my pants are tighter." She joked before walking away to let the girl enjoy her desert. In fact Evelyn went to the kitchen and snagged herself a serving of Tiramisu, and she ate it as she stared at the crates her son was going to deliver in just a few hours. She couldn't help but worry that something would go wrong, and she also couldn't help but worry that something would go right and he would get even more drawn into doing this kind of thing. Oh she wished he would stay away from the lifestyle of his uncle's world, it was dangerous in more ways than one and she just wanted him to be safe and make the most out of the talents that he had. After comfort eating she downed a glass of red wine before going back out the front where she made her way over to Casey, "Would you like any coffee or are you ready for your bill?" She said with a smile of friendly service. Tag: @amberrae. (Ooc: Thought we could maybe jump ahead a little and skip to that night, if you are ready to?) |

Word Count: 241 Note: Sorry it's so short; been sick and haven't had muse to do anything lately; but I wanted to get a move on in our thread; so hopefully this is ok.
Casey eyed Evelyn up and down before arching an eyebrow. “Well, excuse me for saying so Evelyn, but you definitely cannot tell that you don't exercise. You look healthy to me at least.” Casey shrugged, and took another bite of her food; chewing thoughtfully. Almost choking on her food; Casey quickly took a sip of her wine and wiped her mouth with her napkin; before smiling up at Evelyn. “Well, you still saved enough for those of us lowly people who don't know how to cook to safe their lives at least” Casey joked back. “And yes, you definitely told me. Remind me to try that other stuff next time I come by here. I'm willing to try anything once and if what I ate tonight is any indication; I cannot wait to try what else you guys have here.” Casey said; and nodded her head as Evelyn went to no doubt go about her business attending to the other customers. It gave her enough time to finish her dessert. Once she had finished and she made sure her mess was cleaned up; Casey grabbed her purse and pulled out her wallet to pay Evelyn. She smiled as the woman in question walked back toward her. Casey looked up as Evelyn asked if she was ready for her check. “I'll take the check now and the coffee to go if that's allowed” Casey smiled pulling out the cash to pay Evelyn.

Evelyn twisted her hip and glanced down at herself when Casey said she looked healthy. "Aww, thank you." She said with a flattered smile. It was compliments like that one that brightened her day. "I will." Evelyn replied with a nod when Casey said to remind her to have the Burrata Tortellini next time. She believed the girl when she said she would come back, and Evelyn wanted her to come back. Not just for her custom but because she liked the girl, even if she was about old enough to be her mother. In facet that was probably part of the reason why Evelyn liked the girl, she had a mothers heart and took care of younger people because they were someones kid. " Come on Wednesday and you'll get 10% off between 3-7pm." She said, making Casey aware of the offer they were currently running every Wednesday. Evelyn picked up the empty desert dish when Casey said she was done and requested coffee and the bill, "Sure thing, Sweetheart." She replied. Evelyn left and came back a couple of minutes later with the bill and a hot coffee in a paper to go cup, "There you go my dear." She said with a smile, placing it on the table in front of Casey along with a chocolate mint on top of the check to round of the experience. Once Casey had paid Evelyn set about clearing and wiping down the table, " Thank you for stopping by. Take care." She said sincerely, as she watched Casey head for the door. ********************************************************* After a busy evening of serving it was closing time and Evelyn locked the door then turned the sign from 'Open' to 'Closed' She looked out off the glass window to see if anyone was near by. Not anybody would be looking or would be able to see anything from the front of the building even if they were, it was just a habit of hers whenever she was involved in anything legally questionable. Once she closed up she went to the kitchen and watched as her son and his uncles men started taking their crates. "What?" Anthony asked, seeing the look on his mother's face as she stood there. "You know what." She replied. "I don't like you being involved in this stuff, Anthony. I want you to have a normal life.""It's just one job, Ma. I'm just doing Uncle Vincent a favor" He replied, trying to get her to see that it wasn't a big deal, "And it's a simple job. Don't worry." "Yeah well, I'm gonna have a word with your Uncle Vincent for askin' you to do him a favor in the first place. Be careful, baby." She said giving him a kiss on the cheek. With that the men left and drove to the meeting point to make their deal under the cover of the night. Tag:@amberrae. OOC: No worries, I hope you feel better soon *hug* |
