[attr="class","drewleft"] [attr="class","drewleft2"] | [attr="class","drewright"] Dallas still struggled to wrap his head around all of this. Moments, like the one he shared with Sydney now, broke all of the rules they had established that first night they'd shared a bed together. But not just their rules. The agency's too. You weren't supposed to get involved with your partner—let alone your partner, the senior field agent—but he very much had. Then again… when had Andrew Graham ever been about following the rules? He wanted strings. All of the strings. That was the thing about being partnered with someone. You got close—you understood them in a way perhaps no one else could. And, now that he and Sydney were in witness protection, the only thing standing in the way of them was them. If that meant learning how to be a professor—teaching college kids aspiring to become federal agents the ins and outs of a job he had excelled at—then that's what he would do. The implications of a white picket fence lifestyle were worth it, even if their marriage had been a paperwork screw-up of monumental proportions on behalf of the U. S. Marshals. Sometimes it took that kind of push for you to realize what you were faced with was exactly what you wanted—and needed. "I adapted because I want you in my life. I may not know much about marriage. Hell, about relationships. But aren't couples supposed to be all about compromise? About two people meeting each other halfway?" Things would be different, yes. He would still be sharing a house—not with other federal agents, but with a wife and, soon, with their child. They just wouldn't be tip-toeing around, trying to hide a work partners with benefits relationship from FBI and ICE agents. But different didn't have to mean worse—not if you were willing to make the best of what you were given. That's what Dallas had been trying to do. He brushed his lips against hers. "Sydney Dumaine, this is what I want. You. Us. Whatever that brings. I mean that every bit as much as before." Technically, Dallas was still breaking their rules. He just didn't care. Hopefully, Sydney didn't either, but she seemed responsive to the idea of them as a couple. But when she admitted she wasn't feeling very well, he changed tracks. "Then let's get you to bed. Sounds like you could use some rest. Don't worry. I'm not going anywhere." Sydney Dumaine [attr="class","drewright2"] |
