Stephanie wasn't shocked that Ben was jumping to conclusions. Everything she could say, didn't make much sense. She leaned on Ben's shoulder clearly fighting between what was the reality and what was in her head. The familiar scent of Ben's cologne suggested she was safe, but the cracking sounds and her CO... where was she and what kind of reality was she in?
The fireworks went off and Stephanie tried to scramble down but Ben had a hold on her, she couldn't go anywhere. She was struggling hard. Ben was upset, it was doing nothing to calm her down. Stephanie tried to latch onto his voice it was calm. Even James' voice was calm. The snaps from Ben though at James they were interfering with her just settling. She could hear James shuffling something around. The building was quieter than outside. Stephanie was trying to focus on something on anything.
The only problem is nothing was calm enough for her right now. Stephanie looked around before glancing down at her arm at the scars. No Ben and James didn't do this to her but it was clear she wasn't really there with them. Stephanie was trembling again. Incoherent mumblings of something the Bulgarian insurgents had said to her. "No don't... don't leave me here" she managed out in English. Stephanie had no idea what the two were up to as she wasn't completely back with reality yet. It was clear she was still in and our of reality and her own head. Right now she was back in the her head.

The silence in the room was good it gave him a minute to think about what was going on. Ben was far from happy and his mind was doing flips over the fact that James was even there. Yes he was protective of Stephanie, it was his right to be after all he was going to marry her if she’d have him. Stephanie was upset and he had no idea what to do to fix it though a random stranger telling him how to handle his fiancé, was it really going to work to not make him have a reaction to it? Doubtful he thought though the silence was winning through.
“Should be okay? You mean you don’t know?” Oh great he thought, he had left the safety of his fiancé to the guy who thought ‘it should be okay’. No this was wrong he thought, he would never have trusted Stephanie at work to someone who thought things that way so why was he taking this chance with her now. She had caught him off guard as he never once thought there would be a problem but then he knew little about her condition as it was, just what she had managed to tell him and even that was sparse.
Ben kept a hold on her not wanting her to run off again, he was lucky enough to have found her first time or rather she had run into some sort of hand happy ‘served with’ guy. Ben had never seen anything like it before, she was there but not there and he had no clue how to get her back to being herself. “I’m not leaving you Stephanie, I never will okay?” He said as he moved to pick her up again to keep her safe. If he could get her home then maybe that would work, home where she knew where she was and that home was safe.
Glaring at James Ben had no idea what the man was trying to do though there was some angle on it he was hardly going to let Steph get hurt. “You need to stay away from her, she was fine up until you touched her.” Ben said, it was the only thing his own mind could make sense of it had to be James that had done it because nothing else made sense. “I’m taking her home.” He stated as kept a tight hold on Stephanie as he moved to the door.

James Reagan “Should be okay? You mean you don’t know?” As Ben lashed out at him again James regarded him, his focus was on Steph, trying to hear her over his intrusive thoughts, the Bulgarian told him that she was more or less still out of it "No don't... don't leave me here" James considered his options as he watched Ben go to her “I’m not leaving you Stephanie, I never will okay?” James watched him as he picked her up and realised what he was about to do, he knew going back outside was a huge risk - the fireworks were going off full blast “You need to stay away from her, she was fine up until you touched her.” That actually stung, really stung - James fought against the urge to show his response, he stared numbly at Ben for a moment at least until he heard Ben again “I’m taking her home.” James found his voice “I wouldn’t, not yet” he said softly, again his voice not loud enough to boom around the room but could still be heard, his tone level and calm, it helped Steph at least when he was calm “Fireworks are still going, and she’s still out of it” James didn’t move from his spot, but he rose his hands in a slight defense posture, something he always did when he ‘talked’ “Look, I’m sorry you had to see me tackle your fiancee, and I know it didn’t look right to you. But when it comes to her and running, you’ve got to. Else she won’t stop. Shouting and noise just makes it worse, you can only chase her if you can keep up and catch her,” a beat “I know you don’t have any reason to trust me, you don’t know me. I know it’s not enough that I served with her, But I...” he caught himself and considered quickly “Look, I served with her, for long enough, I know it’s not enough for you, but I’m asking you, to wait, until she calms down” he said softly, indicating Steph “Please, She will snap out of it - if we calm down and help her” he added. If he could get Ben to agree, fine - but there was no way he’d allow him to risk taking her outside - the fireworks probably had started up again. But he also knew he couldn’t physically stop Ben, he was already keeping a distance - and Steph wouldn’t be too pleased either probably. He had to be patient.

Ben was angry and hurt; he had no idea what the cause of all of this was apart from loud noises and a random guy who tackled Stephanie. His mind was still trying to catch up with the two people in that room that understood a lot more than he did on everything that was happening. Ben was in catch up mode and still his mind had failed to make certain leaps other than Stephanie had been randomly attacked if that or just groped or whatever it was James called it. ‘Service buddies’ well that brought a whole new meaning to the guy standing beside you. He hesitated in taking Stephanie outside hearing the warning James gave him. He could see she was still out of it but he hated that the guy was right about it. Outside was a bad idea because the last thing he needed was a wild goose chase across Chicago after her. Ben noted the defensive posture James took on, all he was trying to do was do the right thing by Stephanie and that was tough to do. “Fine if you want me to wait then I will but don’t take another step. How do I even know she can trust you because she’s not exactly in a state to say so?” He asked though this whole served together thing. It was what it was and having never served in his life he struggled to understand that. Ben knew he would take another fire-fighters word over any man but then James was not CFD. His ‘served together’ argument was simply that an argument he had no idea about. Ben saw a side that was filled with a little clutter as he took Stephanie over to it, he cleared it off with his arm before he placed her down on it. “Stephanie, look at me please.” He said as he held her trying his best to calm her down without knowing exactly what to do. “It will be okay, just talk to me. It’s Ben I won’t let anything happen to you.” He stated as he looked back at James trying to watch where the man was. “Steph, just talk to me about what we’re doing this weekend?” He asked not sure what had been planned but he thought a distraction was a good idea. Ben had trust issues at the best of times and he was hardly going to trust the woman he loved to a man he had met three minutes ago and who had tackled her in a crowd. He had watched the discovery channel, he knew what weirdo’s there were out in the world. Stephanie Taylor, @james,

Stephanie was lost somewhere between hearing a familiar voice in the back of her head. Then the voice snapped again. She cringed hearing the yelling. 'Harris... Harris. Lieutenant. Can you hear me?' No not the same voice from the hospital. None of the parts even made sense. She was only halfway processing the voices. Were they arguing? No.. Though in her head it was the insurgents arguing over what to do with her.
She listened to Ben's heartbeat calming down as she was set down. She leaned against the wall and looked towards him. He looked familiar. "Ben?" She questioned a moment before smiling before realizing she had no idea where she was. "Where am I?" the all to familiar question of having been locked up in her head.
"Last I checked my mouth was moving and making sounds" she pointed out. "I would define that as talking" she added lightly swinging her arm in his general direction. Stephanie snark was a good sign. That's when she caught sight of James. Great.... this was a recipe for disaster. No she vaguely remembered James catching her, she'd been running. But nothing else made sense.
Ben's body language said everything Stephanie needed to know. Part of her job was profiling and right now she could tell Ben was being protective. "Hey Gopher" he wanted her to look at him but his attention was divided. Stephanie reached up to play with Ben's hair. "Reagan isn't a threat babe." She tried to get him to calm down now. Though she wondered what James did to get Ben's hair raising on the back of his neck. Right now she just wanted to prevent a fight. Keeping Ben's attention might be the best way right now. Stephanie's attention though was on Ben. 'Don't do anything stupid, don't do anything stupid'. Men. Oi.

James Reagan When James saw Ben hesitate he knew he had gotten through but he didn’t move “Fine if you want me to wait then I will but don’t take another step. How do I even know she can trust you because she’s not exactly in a state to say so?” James remained silent, knowing better, Steph needed one voice to focus on and for now he’d let that be Ben, at least he’d moved away from the door and to the side. “Stephanie, look at me please.” Finally, James’ thought as his eyes focused on Steph. “It will be okay, just talk to me. It’s Ben I won’t let anything happen to you.” He didn’t miss Ben looking to see where he was but he was staying right where he was, he was not going to move - of course. “Steph, just talk to me about what we’re doing this weekend?” Distraction was a good place to start as any, removal from the situation and distraction.
"Ben?" Okay she seemed to be coming out of it, James pushed his hands into his pockets, straightening his shoulders but still remaining in place - Once Steph seemed to be coming out of it it was a good sign things would settle down "Where am I?" James watched quietly "Last I checked my mouth was moving and making sounds" James mentally eyerolled, Steph snark - typical, but it was one of those signs that told him things "I would define that as talking" James resisted the urge to snort but inwardly smiled, glad to at least see she was calmer, when he saw Steph spot him he regarded her quietly, waiting
"Hey Gopher" That word again - James didn’t speak "Reagan isn't a threat babe."
At least Steph had said it, though she had said it twice - not that James had been counting, he’d let Ben do whatever he wanted to him but all James cared about was that Steph was okay, if Ben beat him to a pulp then so be it - but he had the feeling Steph was going to question exactly what James did to incur Ben’s wrath. Not that he was afraid, he did what he had to do, he still felt a sense of duty to look out for his 'teammates' even if they were no longer part of his team - when you go through the storms together you kind of cling to each other, what Steph had done for him James wanted to be able to repay - somehow. But what could repay digging someone out of a hole?
