"Yeah, but I think we're smart enough that if we hear any night-bumps to actually turn on a flashlight, and not to turn our backs or go back to sleep...and just to get in the car and leave!"

Man, those kids in horror movies made such poor decisions and did such stupid things, getting killed was just 'Darwin at work'!

"And...how did you know I always wanted to see the World's Largest Ball of String? Heck, I was even thinking about starting my own. And I'm sure we can find a bunch of other museums and cool roadside attractions."

Then she sighed and shrugged. "Why can't I find a nice guy to do this stuff with? I mean, not that you aren't a nice guy, but...you know what I mean, and I think this would be a good way to test just how nice and cool a guy really was." After all, anyone who could have fun doing stupid stuff had to be okay!

“I’d like to think that too but then what if the axe murderer is waiting by the car, when we get there the tyres are slashed and we end up running through the woods anyway?” Steven asked laughing, each horror movie was a guide as to what not to do. Never run, keep calm and if there is a killer around make sure you have a heavy torch to hit them with. And never ever believe that when they say they will not hurt you, they are telling the truth.

“See I am just that good you know, I can see into people’s minds.” He joked though it was one thing he wished he could do. Life would be so much easier if he could do that. “Your own ball of string, well you had better start now because I’ve heard the biggest one is pretty big you know.” He said grinning at Isla as he nodded. “Oh we would, all kinds of weird and wonderful things, maybe a fudge world or a sword making place.” He added randomly.

“I see how it is now, so I’m no longer the ‘nice guy’.” Steven said huffing lightly as he laughed. “It would be a good way to test to see if they are good enough but that is what you have me for right? Scared them to death first just to make sure and then you can go on your adventures as long as you call twice a day to tell me you’re okay.” Steven added grinning though the calling part, he was hardly above trying to get her to do that.

“Then again tell me, is there anyone that you’re looking at for these trips?” Steven asked not sure if Isla had her eye on someone or not at the moment. It would just be a person he had to scare into either not dating his sister or making sure that they were good enough to do that.

"Nah, no one." She shrugged, then laughed. "I'm getting used to it, but I'm not in any hurry anyway. There was that one cop, he seemed really nice, but...I don't know, he just quit calling. Maybe I'm doing something that scares them off or something?"

Of course, it was really easier not to have that to deal with, at least for now. And at least she hadn't gotten too invested in the relationship before he disappeared...and it helped that she was wary and cautious, not prone to just jumping into a relationship.

"Anyway, I might just get a dog, that way if it's bad I can smack it on the nose with a rolled up newspaper, and he'll protect me." Not attack her, so there was double positive there!

"I don't know, I'm getting so old now, so it doesn't really matter, right? And I'm more than happy to go on a trip with you, and I'd even put down a bet on how long it took us to drive each other nuts!"

Well, she probably could get along with her brother without any problem, especially for a couple weeks. She certainly didn't have any rosy-eyed notions that there wouldn't be any conflict between them, but they had a history of squabbles and getting over them.

"But I'm going to remember and hold you to it. Might be a couple years, and maybe I'll have someone by then, but we can make him ride in the back seat!"

“You sure about that?” He asked laughing as he nodded hearing about some cop, if there was anything more dangerous she might have said fire-fighter but then maybe a cop could be really nice. “Oh you just keep doing exactly what you’re doing Isla, don’t you worry about keeping them around at all.” He joked though he had to admit it was easier if Isla scared them off herself as he could look like the meek innocent party in the whole thing.

It was the perfect plan if ever he had heard one. He understood how not dealing with relationships was easier, he had done enough that way himself. Things never got too far because he usually did something to stop any sort of attachment in its tracks, then again his job hardly helped with the matter. “Yeah a dog sounds like just the thing you need.” Steven nodded in agreement, a dog was far better than a man and a lot more loyal too he was sure.

“Think we could manage it in under eight hours?” He joked laughing as he nodded, “Yeah your so old now, I can remember when you were only two feet tall.” He said with a sigh, back then life was a lot simpler than it was now. He was sure the one thing that stayed the same throughout was the simple fact they could always and would always drive each other nuts.

Steven laughed as he nodded, “A couple of years sure but you know they will be in the back seat so I can make sure that they are good for you, if not we just chuck them out on the road side and start over.” He teases knowing there had been a few times between both sisters he had wanted to do that to any guy that looked twice at them.

"Problem with that is that he'd probably be chipped and they can trace him back to us and charge us for littering!"

Laughing, she stopped and turned to look at him as they got to the cars, then she patted his old car on the hood. "I promise to take good care of your baby, and I know it will take good care of me." She kissed him on the cheek. "Really, though, I should do a little studying while I eat a carton of ice cream to settle my nerves...but I know I'm going to rock that test, and then I can be Nurse Isla! Might even earn the Golden Thermometer!"

“Yeah fair point but maybe I can talk to PD and just get them arrested for something, littering themselves or something.” He joked as he watched her pat the car. It was a sad day to day goodbye to the car he had practically treated like family since he got it.

“It will and if it doesn’t then you have my permission to scrap it as repayment.” He said grinning feeling her kiss him on the cheek. “I really never understand why you worry about this test, you have it in the bag and besides that Golden Thermometer is yours too. Maybe even a new watch just too?” He offered grinning.

For his sisters he would do anything and Isla becoming a nurse was a big deal in his eyes. He had no doubt she knew the test inside and out but then it was like any test, even he got nervous if he had to re-sit and exam or two. Then again the amount of times he had gone for refresher courses he might as well teach them himself but still. It was fun to try and find something new to learn.

He had no idea how much his encouragement and endorsement meant...well, he probably did, he'd always encouraged both his sisters and he'd never been wrong, they'd done well for the most part and when they hadn't, Steven had been there to pick them up.

"All right, then, chill out, relax...gonna do just great on the test!" Her smile was far more confident than it had been, and besides, what more was there to study? Her poor brain was already numb with it. "I'll go home, take a hot bath, get to bed early..."

And stare at the ceiling all night because her brain wasn't going to shut off...

"Maybe I should go home with you..? I mean, you're pretty boring...you'll put me to sleep in an instant!"

Steven never doubted his family; no in his eyes they were perfect no matter what. He had every faith that Isla would pass that exam and really to him there was no contest as to her being a nurse one day. If it took one test or ten he knew she would get there in the end.

“Sure see now you believe it too so you’ll pass.” Steven said grinning seeing her confident smile, better than the one that had been there after all it was about believing in herself. “See excellent plan, a brain never works with no sleep... see that’s my reason for being an idiot in a day.” Steven said grinning at her as he nodded.

He stared for a moment before laughing, “So i’m boring now and can put people to sleep, maybe I should play music all night and make sure that you know I’m the fun brother instead?” He offered chuckling as he grinned. It was an instant way to make his sister hate him but then again he had taken her zip lining and felt like he might have almost died in the process.

“Or if you do come back with me, then I can make sure you eat a real breakfast in the morning not just a cereal bar or something strange you know.” He offered, “Unless you want a cereal bar and coffee?” He said not sure if that was her thing now of if a bacon roll or full breakfast was more her thing.

“So i’m boring now and can put people to sleep, maybe I should play music all night and make sure that you know I’m the fun brother instead?”

"Well, kinda by default, anyway." Isla shrugged. "Funnest, bestest, pesteriest, annoyingest, whatever-est, you don't really have any competition there. And," she threatened, "if you play music all night, I'm going to dance on the table all night!"

“Or if you do come back with me, then I can make sure you eat a real breakfast in the morning not just a cereal bar or something strange you know.” He offered, “Unless you want a cereal bar and coffee?”

"Oh, bribery?" She gave him a cheeky grin, then shrugged with a sigh. "If you're serious, and you don't mind...I think I'd like that...I know I won't sleep if I'm alone, I'll just...bounce off the walls...Or...we could have a slumber party at my place, you could sleep in the chair! Well, not sleep, stay awake and keep me distracted..."

Steven laughed and nodded, “Oh yeah I’m all of those things and more. Not annoying though.” He joked as he rolled his eyes, “From memory you never needed music to do that at all.” He added grinning as he knew that Isla could dance wherever she wanted to at any point. Day, night, time to go to school it was one of those things in life and a table was pretty difficult to get someone off if they never wanted to get off it.

“If it works and all, stick with it. Bribery is an age old tool of sister taming.” He joked grinning as he smiled hearing that. Sure he had home to go to but then looking after his sister at her request, oh there was no chance he was going to pass that one up. Chair or not he would make sure to distract her and keep her mind of any exams or tests she wanted. “Then it’s settled, I’m sleeping at your place and I can distract you all you want.” He offered, “You’ll be begging me to leave by the morning.”

Well maybe she would though if it helped her out any; Steven was willing to give up about anything for that. “So you get some sleep and I can distract you all you want until you sleep just no coffee and a reasonable time to get some sleep too. You’re not going to blame me for being too tired to read the exam questions.” He joked as he smiled.

"It's a deal!" she declared, although she was actually a little surprised that he'd agreed to come to her little place. But then, she'd probably be more comfortable at home. "But we need to stop first and get pizza and ice cream, so once we get there we don't have to leave."

It had been a long time since they'd had a slumber party, but they had always been fun, and pizza and ice cream had always been a staple. "Do you need to get your pillow or anything? Maybe some of your silly movies? Really, I don't plan on letting you sleep!"

Well, she really did hope that she'd be able to relax enough to get at least a little sleep, taking a test while exhausted was no good...but then, that was Steven's job...to bore her to death so she forgot all about the upcoming ordeal and fell asleep!

“I like your ideas, pizza and ice cream.” Steven replied grinning for a moment, “So a pizza each or halves or twenty toppings?” Pizza in Chicago, it was amazing and really pizza on any day of the week was amazing, couple it with ice cream and the world could go on spinning no matter what was going on. It had been too long since he had stayed over at his sisters place, life tended to move without him realising it on most days.

“Silly movies, since when are my movies silly?” Steven asked grinning, “You know I have a stack of new ones to watch, there’s Space Balls, Blazing Saddles, Evolution and ten others waiting to be watched again. Just no rom coms or I’ll steal all the ice cream.” He teased, growing up with sisters those were a sort of life time staple as it were. He knew all about Bridget Jones’s Diary, wedding proposals and even a few awful movies too.

Steven had faith in his sister to pass the test, she was smart, she wanted to be a nurse too so he doubted she would come away from it without her new job. Still getting her to get some sleep, he could manage to do that. All he really had to do was start talking football, mechanics or try to explain a really boring diagram of his new favourite car. He was sure that would finish anyone off though time would tell. Still as a big brother he had the responsibility, then again a pizza and ice cream coma could get there first.

"Hey! No fair stealing all the ice cream!" She laughed and shook her head. "All right, no rom-coms, but if you're going to make me watch Spaceballs, I'm going to subject you to Thomasina and Old Yeller!"

She laughed, then kissed him on the cheek. "So, do you want pizza or ice cream detail? We can split up on the way home, meet at my place...you can bring your own pillow if you need to."

In a way, she kinda hated that she had brought it up, not that she didn't want him there, but she didn't want to impose. Of course, if she hadn't brought it up, he probably would have, so...

"Oh, man, I almost forgot...Moon Pies for breakfast, brain food, right? So whoever gets to get the ice cream can grab some of those!" Somehow, at least right now, Moon Pies and coffee sounded really good for breakfast on the biggest day of her life so far!

“Stealing... wow well looks like we’ll need separate tubs then.” He said with a sigh as he laughed. “Thomasina and Old Yeller... rom-coms it is then. Fine you can pick the TV or movie or whatever just make sure it’s good okay. None of this rubbish stuff.” Steven said deciding that torture through movies and TV was entirely possible. Sure Steven had a strange sense of what was good on the box but strange was only relative to the person who found it so.

“I’ll take ice cream detail.” He offered deciding he could just about manage that, “Sure I’ll bring my pillow and an overnight bag too, maybe a sleeping bag as well.” He said with a grin as he knew that Isla would have been coming home for the night if nothing had been said about her place. There was no maliciousness to it simply wanting to look after his sister and make sure she got through the test.

“Moon pies as well, wow you’re really going for the brain food thing aren’t you.” He joked lightly as he nodded, “Ice cream and moon pies coming up.” He said as he pulled his wallet from his pocket taking out some cash as he handed it to her. “Here, take this for the pizzas and I’ll get the rest, meet back at yours in what a half hour?” He asked her, “And no to the cash is not negotiable.” He added deciding that if he was staying at her place the least he could do was to pay for dinner.

"Oh, all right, if you insist!" Grinning, Isla took his money then got into 'her' car, for a moment just sitting behind the wheel, a little perplexed. She did like the car, after all, it was Steven's baby, and she knew she had to take good care of it. On the other hand, it was Steven's baby, and it didn't seen quite right that it was hers now. But she'd do something, innocuous, to make it hers when she had the chance!

Finally, she pulled out of the lot and headed to their all-time favorite pizza place, where she got two pies. It was a lot, but cold left-overs were almost as good as the fresh thing, so they could split!

When she got home she set the pizzas on the table then got out some plates before putting 'Serenity' into the DVR...she was pretty sure Steven liked 'Firefly', and at least it wasn't a rom-com!
