In the beginning Josh thought the Feds were just, well yeah something that he couldnt honestly repeat now he worked for them. Still it seemed to have been the best move he had made recently, it wasn’t as if his skill set translated well into much else and the government he was used to working for was the same. Just a different set of letters on his back that was all.
When James spoke Josh nodded, “Yeah not like I’ve any other choice this time.” He said not meaning to be snappy but then this was his building and a fellow team mate that was in trouble. So not his direct team but anyone that had a federal badge counted as the overall team. “You’d better be, you’re all i’ve got here James.” He stated which was true, the team was too far away to help him in the time he needed them to and it wasn’t like he was going to palm it off to someone else.
Josh stepped into the elevator when it arrived not entirely sure on the reasons behind everything that was going on. He had a general idea about the Dale case but then he hadn’t known the outcome though now he guessed he didnt need that update. “Listen the Dale case was a serial killer, they bunched three cases together and tried him consecutively.” Josh started to explain, “All families with kids under fifteen, all wiped out in a nights work. The guy is evil, i’ve no idea what’s gone wrong with the case but it’s not good. Maxwell saw a lot and the crime scenes were...”
Josh had no words to describe them, he had seen the photo’s himself and he honestly wished he could unseen them. “Maxwell has a family, wife and daughter in college across the state. He’s got everything to live for but the case he took personally, way more personally than you should.” It was strange speaking to James like this again, information and protecting his boss when James hadn’t been that for years now. The situation felt very out of whack.

James Reagan “Yeah not like I’ve any other choice this time.” James shot him a look “You’d better be, you’re all i’ve got here James.” James remained quietly standing behind Josh ever so slightly, not just because he was a fed, not just because this was his building, not just because James was a lowly cop in something outside his jurisiction, but also because in every way, being behind Josh slightly was natural to him. “Listen the Dale case was a serial killer, they bunched three cases together and tried him consecutively.” James nodded listening quietly “All families with kids under fifteen, all wiped out in a nights work. The guy is evil, i’ve no idea what’s gone wrong with the case but it’s not good. Maxwell saw a lot and the crime scenes were...” James looked at Josh quietly, he had that ache still in his heart, a sharp reminder of HOW his wife was taken from him, serial killers played with his head whenever they came into the equation “Maxwell has a family, wife and daughter in college across the state. He’s got everything to live for but the case he took personally, way more personally than you should.” James nodded his understanding but he also knew what it was like to take something way too personally “I need more from his files anything that stands out apart from this case?” James asked quizzically as his eyes watched the elevator numbers change.

This would have been so much easier a couple of years ago, there wouldnt have been any trying to work it out his place was right in front of James protecting the negotiator though now how it worked was anyone’s guess. Josh tried to explain the case but it was one of those cases where you had to have been in it to understand it, he knew James would because of his family but there was a lot hanging on a conviction.
It was like always they could all do their job perfectly and something would come up and bite them at the last minute. Especially when the lawyers got involved, all they could ever do was just to go back and try to fix what went wrong. As soon as Josh saw James’ look he wasn’t sure if James was up for things, he couldnt blame the man at all as if it had been someone he considered family then he wouldnt be in the greatest of head space either for that.
When James asked for more from his files Josh was trying to think of something off the top of his head, he knew they guy but wasn’t the mans best friend so that left a lot of conclusions as he dialled his phone again. “He’s a little rash at times, has a few complaints from suspects especially on cases with kids for being too rough but then dont we all?” Josh said trying to think of anything that really stuck out. “The guy’s up for a commendation for this case, the families heavily relied upon him to push this to get the guy sent away. This just isn’t Maxwell.... something must have happened.” Josh stated thoughtfully trying to work out what would make someone do that.
Much like everything else there wasn’t a clear cut answer, Josh had found that over the years that what he’d call ridiculous could be the one thing that pushing someone too far. It was worse when you knew the person and worse still when they were all on the same side. The job had its own stress but then they had to deal with it and this wasn’t the way at all.

James Reagan "He’s a little rash at times, has a few complaints from suspects especially on cases with kids for being too rough but then dont we all?” James nodded agreeing “The guy’s up for a commendation for this case, the families heavily relied upon him to push this to get the guy sent away. This just isn’t Maxwell.... something must have happened.” James sighed “Sometimes we got to dig buddy” James replied “Can you get someone on the line to relay to us, someone who knows the case as well as Maxwell does?, we'd need earpieces but at least then we'd have someone on the line" The elevator dinged as it reached the roof and James automatically went into Negotiator mode, his mind switching to the job at hand “Make it slow and easy let’s not spook him, lets get the bungee cords ready too” guy was probably already real spooked if people were up on the roof already, how many were there was anyone’s guess but James was real eager not to add fuel to the fire, and the bungee cords were more for their safety as well as one ready for Maxwell if they got close enough “Lets think about making it just us two and him out there” he added. Sure he had a lot on his mind but he didn’t care about himself, he cared about the guy on the edge.

It was the digging he didnt like, not when it was a friend or someone he knew. It was like rifling through their underwear draw when you had been invited into their house. It was all kinds of wrong and yet he knew it was something that they needed to do as he sighed. “Yeah, here take this.” Josh said handing James his phone as he dialled a number for Maxwell’s partner on the case, Agent Howard a stand up guy though maybe he had a better insight into what was going on in Maxwells head than anyone. “Ear pieces will be there already, the guys don’t mess around.” He stated.
Josh knew there was a supply closet up there, a place where the extras were stored or generally when there were too many of an order they were left there until needed. Surplus of technology until the stuff they had broke and then this was the place to visit in a hurry. “I’ll get those.” He said when James spoke about the bungee cords, just what he wanted to think that they would need to stop the guy hanging off the building. He knew he had lost faith in most people years ago but this was a fed, they were trained to handle stress.
“Just the two of us and Maxwell, you sure you are ready for this?” Josh asked not sure what James had been doing for two years, he didnt imagine it was a desk job but then he didnt want to push James into it and have it all end in disaster. The last thing he wanted was for his friend to hit the bottle again over something they had done a thousand times before.

James Reagan James knew Josh’s thoughts on the subject of digging, they all hated it when it was someone they knew “Yeah, here take this.” James took it quickly “Ear pieces will be there already, the guys don’t mess around.” James gave a simple nod “I’ll get those.” at least they had things they might need close at hand - without a team, they needed everything they could get.
“Just the two of us and Maxwell, you sure you are ready for this?” James looked sideways at Josh “Look at me Josh, I promise you, I’m fine - last two years I’ve been solid. Not gonna lose sight of that” he confirmed - he was probably gonna have to explain his doings for the last two years but not right now. Josh would have to just trust that James had it in hand.

Josh trusted James with his life, they had been through enough already though he had been away the last few years and doing his job. He knew how that could change a guy, it wasn’t just a see you in two years there had been a lot happen and John just wanted to make sure that his friend was okay with what he was asking him to do. Looking at James the man hadn’t given him any reason to think that he didnt have everything under control.
“Okay, I’ll hold you to it.” He said knowing that he had to trust James though it was messing with his head as much as his leaving had done. “You lose sight of anything I’ll I make sure you get it back faster than you lost it.” He said deciding that if he wasn’t able to help him the first time then he would make sure if there was a second time he wasn’t going to give up. He could be an absolute pain when he needed to be.
Josh went to get the cords before he came back and looked at James. “Just like old times.” He said trying to think of it like that rather than the fact there had been a long time since their last working together. He missed the old team, even Stephanie was now in the city as a fire fighter though he hadn’t expected to see James that day at all. No he had to get that out of his head and just trust that James still knew what he was doing or this was going to go all kinds of wrong.

James Reagan “Okay, I’ll hold you to it.” James gave a slight nod glad that Josh had accepted that “You lose sight of anything I’ll I make sure you get it back faster than you lost it.” James shot him a grin - they stepped off the elevator and James was rewarded with the familiar sounds of being way up high - As Josh headed off to get the cords James mentally steeled himself “Just like old times.” As Josh returned James took the cord and attached one end around his waist, he’d attach the other end once he got close enough. He put his earpiece into his ear and regarded Josh “Like old times” he confirmed before indicating Josh to take his place, without their usual rifles etc they were a little different but the rule applied, Josh would always be his ‘lead in’ guy in everything even if it had been two years “Slow and steady, lets see where he’s at first before we let him see us” he said softly quietly. It was a territory he was familiar with, he wasn't inexperienced, far from it - but it still hit him every time and he wanted to get a feel for the actual situation before he stepped into it - and that meant seeing where the guy was, what factors were in the equation - but the quicker the better - at least the roof seemed empty, he hoped it was. notes ♡

It was oddly good to be back doing what he loved with his best friend even if there had been so much time lost in between it all. Josh still wasn’t sure exactly what James was doing but he knew if anyone was in trouble then James was the guy you wanted to fix it. Josh fixed up his ear piece as he rolled his eyes at James. “Just make sure you’ve not forgotten anything since you’ve been gone.” He joked as he got into place making sure that nothing could hurt James.
It was a position he was familiar with as he held his gun, not his usual work one but the 9mm one he had to carry and the only one available to him at that point. He didnt want to have to shoot the guy but then if it needed to be done for the safety of others and sometimes the person themselves he wasn’t above taking that shot. “Really boss?” He asked quietly, “I was just going to shoot him but have it your way.”
Josh started to walk toward the agent as he made sure James was with him, his gun wasn’t directly pointing at the man but it was close enough to make any shot he needed to. He went into his usual work state, the checking out every possibility mode while trying to figure out if he needed to take a bullet for James of if this guy was going to be able to e talked down.
Maxwell was pacing up and down, a few steps here and few steps there as the man looked as if he had been crying and had the world on his shoulders. The minute he saw the two men approaching he held up the gun he had at them as he took a few steps toward the ledge. “Don’t come any closer or I’ll jump and shoot.” He yelled at them both glaring at them as he tried to see who else was on the roof with them.

James Reagan “Just make sure you’ve not forgotten anything since you’ve been gone.” James snorted shaking his head, as Josh took a position James knew well he moved himself so that he was behind Josh but almost half visible “Really boss?” “I was just going to shoot him but have it your way.” James rolled his eyes, he hoped Josh was kidding as he followed close but still at arm’s length the way it was meant to be. As James caught sight of Maxwell his mind went into automatic ‘analysis’ mode, taking in every step the man took, the way his body language was, everything he could take in - Then Maxwell saw them - that was the harder part, being seen before you could make a full analysis, but that was the way it always was
“Don’t come any closer or I’ll jump and shoot.” James placed one hand gently on Josh’s shoulder, his usual signal to hold as he held up his other hand “Take it easy, take it easy” he said softly, his body language was calm, neutral, something that helped in volatile situations “We’re not going to step any further” he was close enough at least so that was good enough at least “It’s just us two and you” yep there was a reason why he’d cleared the roof “Maxwell right?, My name is James Reagan” and here we go. It was like every other time, except this time he only had Josh.

It was surprising just how easy it was to go right back into teasing and tormenting his friend a little. Surprising and sad at the same time, sad that he had lost a friend and was willing to throw it all away again just because he didnt want to be hurt like that. He was used to people going in and out of his life, it was the way it had been for years but when they became friends and close like family that Josh struggled with which came out in drinking and saying things he didnt always mean.
He was joking about just shooting the guy but said nothing as he walked toward Maxwell. He felt James’ hand on his shoulder as he stopped exactly where he was. He half wanted to tell the guy that this wasn’t easy on anyone involved but he just kept his mouth shut and his gun pointed. Maxwell was having none of it, “Yeah what of it Reagan, do you work here? Do you even get it?” He snapped as he started to pace holding his hands up to his head holding it slightly before the pointed the gun at James and Josh.
There was no shot taken as Josh waited to see what James would do, it wasn’t exactly the first bullet he had taken for James but this was different in a lot of ways. “I dont need to be told it’ll be alright because it wont, do you know who’s out there? Why they are?” The man asked angrily, “It’s my fault... the next bodies are all on me.” He almost bellowed glaring at James who he had never seen in the building before.

James Reagan James watched Maxwell pace “Yeah what of it Reagan, do you work here? Do you even get it?” he was no FBI Agent but he was a cop - he at least had that on his side, as the gun was pointed at him James took a very slight step back but only small enough to show he’d backed off a bit “Easy, easy” he murmured, he knew unless he gave the order to, Josh would not fire until danger was imminent “I dont need to be told it’ll be alright because it wont, do you know who’s out there? Why they are?” his speech was erratic, all over the place “It’s my fault... the next bodies are all on me.” “Maxwell, talk to me, I’m here to listen. Let me help you” he said calmly, holding his own. He had to contemplate his approach, he had to keep his focus on Maxwell, usually he had a team - someone to do the ‘looking’ for him and relay the information “I need something” he murmured quietly into the earpiece, hopefully someone would give him something.
notes: It bothers me that this thread takes place before he becomes FBI xD hehehehe nevermind haha! ♡

Maxwell glared at the two of them stood there, what did they think they were doing he was a federal agent the same as at least one other person on that roof. Then there was this other guy telling him ‘easy’ yeah no he wasn’t about to take that under advisement at all. Josh didnt back off he stood his ground though he made sure that James was protected enough, the last thing he needed was the guy getting shot when now it was his fault.
“HELP ME!” Maxwell screamed as Josh winced slightly not liking where this was heading at all though he knew to wait for any signal to shoot unless he was forced to on his own. “Help me, yeah unless you can go and put another jury into the court room and convict the guy that kills families then you cant help me. He cant be tried again so now the bodies are on me because I’ve just killed another family.” He stated as if it made the most sense in the world.
Josh could hear a voice in his ear that he knew James could too. “Double jeopardy, the case was acquitted on five families today.” The voice stated as Josh took a breath knowing why Maxwell was going of his head about things. He didnt say a word as he waited to see what James would do or say to the guy to try and talk him down from that.
