Steven watched Kelle hoping that the guy had given her a real name or anything that the police could track him by. When she said Russell, it was specific sure but then how many Russell’s were there in Chicago, likely thousands. “You never know, Criminals can be stupid at times.” Steven said trying to give her some hope but given the way the guy had gone for a medic on their own. He doubted this guy was as stupid as that.
Steven watched the detective start to scribble things down in his notepad again as Kelle told them about the guy. Educated meant that he was far from stupid and CPD would have their work cut out for them in finding him. He hardly wanted to think lost cause but then give the sound of it the guy was too careful.
“That’s always a plus point.” Steven said with a grin though attacking Kelle, yeah he was hardly happy about that. “Wait so he shot someone... that he was trying to kidnap and then wanted to save the guy?” Steven said feeling a little confused. Talk about kidnapping gone wrong. “Did you get the shot guys name?” Steven asked wondering if the cops could work it back from the kidnapping though what was going on in Chicago these days was beyond him.
“You’re safe here okay and Russell isn’t going to get within ten feet of you if I can help it.” Steven stated, “So do you remember anything else that was said, or a smell or where this wonderful place you went to was?” It was all long shots but the more they asked the more chance of finding everything again. Finding the nut case that was trying to take the one partner he liked away from him. Yeah that was something he had an issue with.

“Wait so he shot someone... that he was trying to kidnap and then wanted to save the guy?”"He said he didn't want to hurt the guy," Kelle shrugged, then laughed. "I mean, you know, who's going to anticipate someone resisting when you kidnap them..." Well, she hadn't, but then, she was alive and healthy. "But..." “Did you get the shot guys name?”"No...he wasn't talking, and 'Russell' wasn't going to say..." she shrugged, "and I didn't ask, you know, the less you know, the better." She glanced at the officer and grinned. "Sorry, just makes it easier, and I don't think he would have said anyway." T “You’re safe here okay and Russell isn’t going to get within ten feet of you if I can help it.”"I know." She gave him a grateful smile. Even if Steven wasn't here, this was the safest place in the world -- anyone trying to get to her would have to go through legions of firefighters to get to her, not to mention Boden, and the numerous cops that hung around. "I know you don't want to have to break in a new partner...takes too much time." “So do you remember anything else that was said, or a smell or where this wonderful place you went to was?”Closing her eyes, Kelle shook her head slowly. "Um...no...it was dark so there wasn't much to see." Looking at Steven, she shrugged. "Concrete, pipes, no windows, dust..." Any of a gazillion unused warehouses. "This guy was a pro," she added, "at least I think so, it just didn't feel like this was anything new to him, and he was careful about GPS, made me leave my phone, the radio and pager, and..." Her eyes widened as she looked over at Steven. "The cardiac monitor! It has a modem, right?" They were able to send data to the 'Cloud' and download it later to the computer that they used for 'paperwork', and they could transmit EKG's to the hospitals if they had to. "I mean, I didn't send anything, but it comes on when the monitor does, maybe it marks the location?" She didn't know a lot about that sort of thing, but maybe one of them did? Steven Hudson

There were days when the world made no sense and Steven was very sure that today was one of them. Who shot someone then wanted to save them? Accident no chance he thought as he tried to understand something his brain screamed at him not to. “Yeah I doubt anyone wants to be taken willingly but was this guy insane, did you get that feeling from him?” Steven asked figuring it had to be a yes for the sort of night that Kelle had so far.
“Russell? Did he tell you that?” Steven asked as he nodded, likely yes the less Kelle knew about it all the better off she was going to be. How had this even been allowed to happen he wondered as letting Kelle back out on her own again, no chance in hell that was going to happen. Extra shifts, whatever was needed there was no way she was going on her own again. Not after all of this, hell if any paramedic was about to go on shift alone, it was about to become a serious double shift to stop that.
“See she even thinks like I do now, you’re right takes too long to break in anyone new so might as well keep going with your training.” He joked smiling glad to know she had a sense of humour still. Steven sighed hearing that the guy was a pro, all the things that could be tracked were left in the car she had. Fantastic, a real pro that he now wanted to strangle because he had done this to his partner. “Cardiac modem.... I knew you were a smart one.” Steven said grinning. “They have the QRV right? It should be in there?” Steven asked figuring it was a good a shot as any.
“Sure it does, you turned it on to use it right?” Steven asked just to make sure, “Marks the location each time it’s on, patient output and so on. Just in case we want to take it for a joyride...” He said grinning, “I knew you were a good partner; think you could tell us the place if we can narrow it down to a street or building?” He added wondering just how specific the police could be with the information.

"Yeah, Russell, but I doubt it's his real name." She looked from the officer to Steven. "He's not insane, everything seemed thought-out and measured. I think he's a pro." She shrugged, then laughed a little. "Not that I have a way of knowing, well, besides 'CSI' and 'Law and Order', but he just seemed organized and comfortable with what was going on." She certainly felt that he was no stranger to any of this. When Steven confirmed her thoughts on the monitor modem, she nodded. "I might be able to recognize something...won't hurt to try." She grinned, then gave Steven a quick smirk. "I was trained by the best, you know! 'Course, I'm a quick study." For a moment she paused, then added, "He stopped...for a baby that wasn't breathing. Somewhere around Park and Pine a woman ran into the street and flagged us down. He could have kept going but he didn't." That spoke to the man's character, didn't it? Well, sorta... Steven Hudson

Criminals could be stupid, it would hardly be the first time one of them had used a real name though with what Kelle had told them already. Steven figured it must be fake or at least not an obvious name, John or Bob or just person was easier than Russell. “A pro, well at least we know he’s a pro that values who they take.” Steven said smiling, a pro would know not to leave details unless they were sure about what they were doing. Kelle could tell them anything that might lead to the guy so what made the man let her go he wondered.
He was a paramedic not a cop though maybe he needed to chat to a cop to work this out more. Did he want to know the inner thoughts of a criminal, nope. “Sure and of course you were. Only the best would know about the monitor.” He said grinning at her, “Good job you’re a quick study because you can study the fact you’re no longer going out on shift on your own in this house. Ever.” Steven said, sure Boden had the final word on shift patterns but Steven would make sure he knew his feelings were known on the subject.
“Why did he stop for the baby? What happened and what kind of kidnapper did you get?” Steven asked trying not to look or seem as puzzled as he felt over what he heard. “Well he’s still a monster but, I don’t get it... why stop and how’s the baby?” Steven asked feeling like his head was going to explode already. A seemingly nice kidnapper that kidnapped people, what was going on in Chicago?

"Why did he stop?" Kelle shook her head slightly, thinking it over. "I don't know...he didn't have to." Her eyes went to Steven's as she shrugged. "I think because I asked him...maybe because it was for a baby?" Or maybe it was because the man had a streak of decency in him?"I don't know..." She was feeling confused. Yes, the man was a criminal, a kidnapper, possibly a murdered. "He left me where he knew I could get help," she murmured, "he left me at that fire scene, where there were plenty of firefighters and cops...he could have just dumped me somewhere in a nasty neighborhood...or in the river." It wasn't right, she knew, to think that 'Russell' had some good, but she knew this wasn't 'Stockholm', she was too sensible for that. "Is there something to eat?" Her attention was on Steven. She was tired of all this and just wanted to go home, although she knew there was still a ton of questions and paperwork to finish. Steven Hudson

Steven nodded; the whole stopping thing bothered him. A criminal with a heart, there was no such thing and honestly the fact that the guy had let Kelle go too, it was like pairing a nice guy with the godfather. It hardly went together. “Well at least the guy seems okayish, you know who could leave a baby in trouble.” He mumbled wondering what kind of world they lived in now where that was even a thought.
“Sure he could have but making your way toward cops after kidnapping a medic, that is either well planned our or just insane. I mean sure don’t get me wrong I’m glad he left you with people on our side but why take the risk. What if you screamed or ran or alerted them before you know.” Steven said feeling just as confused himself by the actions of the man. It made no sense to take a risk like that; then again Steven thinking like a criminal was hardly something he tried to make a habit of.
He felt that to those who understood minds like that and this mind Steven was having a hard time with. “Sure yeah there’s food.” Steven said grinning, “Want something from the kitchen or we can get something ordered for you or better yet. How about I take you out for some food?” Steven asked, he was wide awake anyway and if Kelle thought she was getting out of his sight she had no idea how annoying he could be. “What do you feel like eating?” He asked not entirely sure what getting over a kidnap ordeal food was.

“Well at least the guy seems okayish, you know who could leave a baby in trouble.”"Yeah, I guess..." Kelle shrugged, feeling decidedly conflicted. She knew what had happened was wrong, but, within the perimeters of being kidnapped, there had been a lot of good. "Still, he didn't hurt me or anything." “Sure he could have but making your way toward cops after kidnapping a medic, that is either well planned our or just insane. I mean sure don’t get me wrong I’m glad he left you with people on our side but why take the risk. What if you screamed or ran or alerted them before you know.”"I don't know," she muttered, looking down. She wanted to believe that he was genuinely concerned about her well-being, and that was why he hadn't just pushed her out in a bad neighborhood in the middle of the night, but then, the reason she hadn't shouted or alerted anyone was because of the fear of a bullet in her back if she had. Sure yeah there’s food.” Steven said grinning, “Want something from the kitchen or we can get something ordered for you or better yet. How about I take you out for some food?” Steven asked, he was wide awake anyway and if Kelle thought she was getting out of his sight she had no idea how annoying he could be. “What do you feel like eating?”"Pizza..." She saw this as an escape from all the officials and interrogations. She glanced at the cop then Steven. "Rico's is all night, so they'll be open, I mean, if were done here?" Hopefully! She sure was! “Best news I’ve heard all night.” Steven replied, knowing that Kelle was unharmed was a good thing. In the grand scheme of life, he figured there could have been a much worse outcome though it was bad enough from what he had heard. It was a strange thing as he glanced over at the detective, he was glad he was just the paramedic with this one and that he had his partner back.
He knew his track record was bad but getting them kidnapped was a whole new set of rumours he hardly wanted to add to the pot. “Sure then I’ll take you to Rico’s for pizza.” Steven said as he grinned looking over at the cop that just nodded and kept writing things in the little notepad he had. “Any questions you know where to find us and Kelle won’t be working a shift for a day or two so Boden will have her info.” Steven stated deciding that she had at least earned a few days off to think about what had happened.
Even if it meant him checking by after shift or just generally throwing his head around the door to make sure he was alright. After all if he wanted rid of his partners he usually just told them so or they ran on their own, he hardly needed any help in making them want to leave. “So want to grab anything from the lockers?” Steven asked, he was off shift at the time so his stuff was on him or in the car he had abandoned at the front of the station.

"Let me run in and change really quick," Kelle asked, already up and moving, wanting to get away from the cop before he changed his mind or came up with more questions. "Want out of this uniform." And really, all she needed was five minutes to trade jeans and a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt for her uniform, and she nearly ran over Steven as she stepped out of the locker room, not thinking that he would be hovering right there. "I'm fine, really," she said with a grin, "no one's going to get me here." Then she shrugged. "But I do appreciate it. Now, let's go get us some pizza before someone finds more reports to fill out!" She knew that Steven would probably have more questions, but she'd much rather talk to him than the cops. Steven Hudson

“Sure take all the time you need to.” Steven said not wanting to rush Kelle at all after what had happened. The cop could wait his turn as Steven hovered, for no other reason that to make sure Kelle was safe and alright. He hardly made it a habit to hang around locker rooms but then he was hardly going to take a chance. Not after that night and not after finally finding a partner to put up with him.
“Never said they would but just so you know, I’m right here and yes I will hover over you until this is done with. No arguing and no chance of escaping it.” Steven said with a grin, yes Kelle was far from his sister but then he was protective over people and right now, he felt Kelle needed that or not overly needed it but he was going to force it on her anyway.
“Pizza it is, come on I’ve got my car out front anyway. It’s probably glad it’s had a rest.” He added grinning knowing he had driving around none stop trying to find something. Little did he figure on a kidnapper having a conscience and that he felt was far from normal but he was glad of it. At least Kelle was back and he could take her for pizza which given the hour, he was hardly against as eating seemed like a good idea.
“Then you can tell me everything that you might have... neglected to tell the cops.” He offered, “I don’t mean it badly but if you remember something food might help jog your memory. So what pizza place do you want?” He asked her as he pulled out his keys for his car.

“Pizza it is, come on I’ve got my car out front anyway. It’s probably glad it’s had a rest.”"Yeah, didn't mean for you to have to put it through its paces." Kelle sighed and shrugged. "Pizza cures all, right?" It would be 'normal', even if it was closer to breakfast than dinner. “Then you can tell me everything that you might have... neglected to tell the cops.” He offered, “I don’t mean it badly but if you remember something food might help jog your memory. So what pizza place do you want?”"Right..." Well, there might have been things she left out, but those had more to do with opinion, and with her sort of helping the guy, and she wasn't sure she was going to offer up that information. After she settled into the passenger seat, she looked over at him. "Nice ride you have here...and promise not to laugh if I fall asleep in my pepperoni!" Steven Hudson,

“Guess it’s good practice, you know road test the car manual and see if it all adds up.” Steven replied not wanting her to think for a second he felt bad about hammering the car since he knew she was in trouble. “Yes pizza is that mystical thing much like coffee or chocolate that can cure everything from the worst day to the common cold.” He joked, pizza could do a lot but he was fairly sure that miracle cures were out of the question. At least for Chicago’s pepperoni that he knew.
“Thanks, my sister sort of out smarted me with this time but I love it.” He added still feeling bad that Isla had his very safe car but then again, he knew there was no chance she would break down. The engine in that thing was sound and he made sure of it. The safety rating was great and she had breakdown cover which meant she never even had to leave the car to get it fixed. Life was covered from all angles.
“Oh I won’t laugh, take photos yes but never laugh.” He said with a smirk, “I at least need something to stick up on the firehouse notice board. How you can fall asleep in Chicago pizza, some might take that as a serious issue.” He joked as he grinned and started the car. He knew a decent pizza place, working strange hours and shifts meant he was familiar with far more take out places and sit down all night restaurants than he should be comfortable with.

"If I can fall asleep in the firehouse and the ambulance, pizza's a no-brainer!" Grinning, she glanced over at him. "And leave it to you to make something incredible even incredibler! Chocolate-covered pizza! Genius!" Then a bit of a frown crossed her features as she looked at the interior of the car. It wasn't new, but it was in great condition. "This really is nice, beats a 'vintage' pick-up with all the original parts, 'as is'." Her speech was getting slower and slurry. "So, if your sister outsmarted you, she must be in a 'Vette or something?" She didn't hear an answer, but she did prove her point about falling asleep anywhere! Steven Hudson,

“Yeah okay then sure you can fall asleep anywhere you want to.” He said smiling as he laughed nodding, “Ohhh now there is something I can live with. Chocolate covered pizza, maybe a side of sprinkles too just in case.” So yes he was about to throw himself head first into a chocolate coma or at least land himself with heart failure but who cared when it tasted so good.
Steven listened to Kelle’s speech getting slower and slurry, honestly he might have replied to her but the quick glance across to her sleeping. He hardly had the heart to wake her up before they got to the place. He was in two minds if he just drove her home but then food seemed like a good idea, he was up and awake anyway and an extra hours sleep before another shift was never going to make a big difference.
Driving carefully to avoid bumps in the road Steven parked up outside the pizza place. The handy part of it being AM morning was the pizza rush had pretty much subsided apart from a few cops he could see trailing in and out and medics grabbing a fast bite or drink for the road. Steven stretched out in his seat for a moment before turning the car off and reaching a hand over to nudge Kelle awake.
“So we finally made it to Disneyland!” He announced not so quietly as he grinned, “Look there’s Mickey Mouse and you remember Daffy Duck.” So there was little subtlety left in life and honestly if there was a look to be had in trying to confuse a person when they woke. Steven was the likely cause of a lot of it as he smirked for a second.
