Steven was stuck in his own head as he waited, Alyssa had been asleep despite his pleading which left him to sit and wait. Two things he hated more than ever as he tried to replay the morning in his head. Who’s fault the accident was? Could he have done more to save her? With a baby too and his first wife had died in a car accident, was this fate trying to tell him something about it? He was brought out from his thoughts when he heard her voice. Whine but it was her whine. “Alyssa, honey.” Steven said smiling at her.
He shook his when she asked about his head, that had been long forgotten about. It was sore but that was as far as it went, he refused treatment because he knew it was barely a bump. He hurt but it was just shock and a jar from the accident, nothing that some rest could clear up. “Fine, I’m more worried about you. How are you feeling?” He asked before glancing at Lucas who had tapped on the door. A doctor meant that the verdict was in as Steven held his breath and only let it go once he heard that the scans were all clean.
“Thank you.” He breathed not really knowing who to thank but if it took as much praying as he had done in the time Alyssa was asleep then he was willing to do that forever. “Of course, I’ll make sure she doesn’t go anywhere and is on total bed rest.” Steven added though he knew that was going to be a battle and a half to fight. Steven heard the thud of her hand on the bedside as he lost his smile. Was she really going to argue this? “Alyssa, it’s for your own good. The good of you and the baby so you won’t move from a bed, I’ll bring you back here once a week until you’ve healed. Follow the doctor’s orders.” Steven stated not caring if she hated him for siding with a medical professional or not.
“Thanks doc, you sure she’s okay though? A hundred percent sure?” Steven asked wanting to make sure that the doctor knew what he was doing. Not that he mistrusted doctor’s but given his first wife, Steven was hardly going to take any chances. “How long does Alyssa need to stay today?” He asked not sure if he wanted her to be home or where it was easier for the doctors to watch over her. Not that he would shirk his duties, no he would become the biggest pain in the butt she had ever seen in making sure she did everything she was supposed to. With that in mind Steven reached for Alyssa’s hand, relieved that things were generally alright despite the oxygen news.

[attr="class","Alyssaner"] [attr="class","Alyssaner1"] [attr="class","Alyssaback"] [attr="class","Alyssanert"]Hearing Steven’s voice she could only smile a little, there were a million questions running through her head and she was trying to sort things. Nothing made sense but Steven made sense. Alyssa was about to answer Steven with how she felt when Lucas came in and started yabbering about her condition. She’d been listening and holding her tongue for the most part. That was until she heard Steven’s voice chastising her. “Who are you arguing with Steven? All I did was sigh.” She pointed out yanking her hand away and facing the wall. She shoved her hands up under her head to support her cheek. Everything hurt and the last thing she needed was him starting in on her for a single sigh. Alyssa bit her bottom lip and laid there just staring at the white washed walls of the hospital room. “We want to monitor her for the next few hours. The less stress she has the better off things will be.” Lucas was aware of the paramedic’s reputation and he wasn’t about to call him on it but the last thing Alyssa needed was someone yelling at her. Lucas decided to approach Alyssa and get her attention. He could tell she didn’t really want to talk, she looked worried. “Take a few breaths and try and get some rest. The baby is alright and you are alright, you are going to have your hands full; get rest while you still can. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask.”Alyssa nodded at Lucas. He had a way with people, something she wasn’t so sure Steven had. Hospitals reminded Alyssa of times she didn’t want to remember. She’d spent countless hours in them when her parents and her brother were murdered. It wasn’t as instant as most people thought. These memories were hers to fight and she didn’t need Steven chastising her small frustrations. No, talking wasn’t an option at this point. It would only start an argument. She could hear her ex in her head telling her to hold her tongue, that it just got her into trouble. Clearly, so did her body language. She took a deep slow breath and swallowed the air. There was no doubt in his mind that he had managed to put his foot into things again the minute she called him on arguing and yanked her hand away. Great, just what needed to be going on right now however Steven was sure that her sigh was arguing. In a very none argumentative way. Steven wanted to explain to her but then Lucas was started talking again as Steven listened to him talk about stress. Less stress, was that a ‘shut up and smile about it’ conversation he thought as he leaned back in his seat.
No he would try not to stress Alyssa out a tall which likely meant staying silent for the most part. Even hearing a doctor confirm the news again Steven had no idea what he was doing, they might have been talking about it right now had it not been for the accident. The less stress for Alyssa meant that talking about things might be a bad idea but then he had bets of flu or food poisoning. Baby, yeah since when had he made that much of a misstep but he guessed it was the exact reason you never treated family.
Steven had never really been great with the whole silence thing, he was used to noise and activity and the hospital. It was familiar ground though ten times more frightening when you knew the patients there. He listened carefully to Alyssa’s breathing before casting his eyes across a couple of the screens. Everything seemed normal to him as he tried to work out something better than ‘how do you feel?’ to ask her. Something that he hoped would be a little less stressful than starting an argument with her.
“Alyssa.” Steven said though he made no attempt to approach her, no stress and no worry for her. If he stayed in the chair and picked his words carefully he could take that factor out of things from his side. Or so he hoped he could. “I know we never really had a minute to talk about this or think but I just want you to know that I’m here for you. You and the baby, no matter how you want to work this or what you want to do I don’t want you to worry about a thing okay. I’ve got whatever you need covered, just ask.” He said not wanting her to worry about the million things he was trying to work out in his own head.
“I was just worried about you and worry makes me a bit crazy, then the accident and I’m sorry but I’m here for you.” Steven said glancing at the floor as he took his own slow breath. He had lost his first wife of eighteen to a car accident, even now a car accident was enough to turn his day upside down but with Alyssa. He was terrified of a repeat of the past, he had lost his first wife to a car accident. His girlfriend was in an accident with him and she was pregnant, history stated something bad was liable to happen so he was on edge and being overly protective trying to do what he did best. Look after family, in his own bone headed way.

[attr="class","Alyssaner"] [attr="class","Alyssaner1"] [attr="class","Alyssaback"] [attr="class","Alyssanert"]Whatever she needed? That was a new one. No matter how she wanted to work it? Alyssa could hear the next words coming of something about not wanting to be with her anymore. Alyssa just kept silent. What was she supposed to say? Finally she managed to get words out, they were carefully measured. “What do you want Steven?” She bit back sharper words along the lines of ‘do what you want I’m just the woman carrying your kid’ but decided those words were too bitter. She could hear her ex in her head berating her for screwing up. Alyssa knew there relationship was either going to have to sink or swim and right now she felt like everything was sinking. No wonder he had bombed so many relationships, he didn’t even know how to talk to her about them. Alyssa sometimes wished she had her mom back to talk to about things like this. Alyssa was careful to keep her face hidden. Even as she glanced up at the monitor the baby was hooked up to for heart rate, she rested her hand on her stomach. Truth was she didn’t need anything. If worse came to worse, she knew she could care for, raise, and provide for their child. Alyssa rolled over to face Steven an empty hand reached out for him. Maybe he’d understand. But Alyssa didn’t like to admit she was scared about anything. Right now what scared her most was Steven walking away and her watching things crumble. “Stop worrying about me, I looked after myself for the last few decades and I think I’ve done alright.” She mused. Alyssa was very independent and stubborn. “My head hurts and I wanna go home and rest.” She admitted. Though she knew she was stuck here at least until morning. “But seeing as I can’t. Can I at least enjoy the company I have?” She swallowed hard trying to figure out what it was she really wanted to say. In the mix of things going through his head Steven had never considered the slightly sharper tone to any words she might say. What did he want? He thought he had made that perfectly clear though maybe he needed to spell it out for her. “I want you, I want our baby so I want you both but that is just my side. What is it that you want?” Steven asked almost afraid of that answer but the question needed to be asked. He knew he would do all he could for Alyssa no matter what her choice but then thing were hardly planned.
He guessed that if it ever was going to happen then it needed to in a reasonable amount of time, Alyssa was no longer military which worked and he worked shifts so that was easy enough to work around. Then again he knew his father would have known what to do about it all, he could even hear the easy way he might laugh about it and tell him not to be an idiot and over thinking it all. He knew he did that a lot but then when he could barely see Alyssa’s face it was easy to read too much into things.
To say he was relieved when Alyssa rolled to face him was the understatement of the year. He took her hand gladly, sqeezing it lightly as he held onto it pulling his chair closer to her bed. “Oh I can’t disagree with that at all, I mean just maybe not the day you crashed onto the beach but other than that I’d say pretty good.” He teased lightly knowing how stubborn and independent she was. Steven had no idea what he wanted to say, it was in his head but each time it came to saying it out loud he managed to say something else in a roundabout way.
“No you can’t and it’s my fault so I am sorry.” Steven said wishing then had taken a taxi or a different route home, at least that way they might be there by now. “You can enjoy the company you have because I’m not going anywhere Alyssa.” He stated reaching his hand out as he placed it over hers on her stomach. “You know I love you? That no matter what I’m not going anywhere and your point from earlier, you don’t have to look after yourself anymore. Let me take some of that on for you? Like I said, I’m not going anywhere.” Steven added smiling as it felt like the first time that day the news of a baby was actually sinking into his brain.
Not the panic or the numbness he had felt previously but the excitement of it all, the unknown followed by the smile that only seemed to get bigger and he glanced at the monitors before looking back to Alyssa as he held her hand happily.

[attr="class","Alyssaner"] [attr="class","Alyssaner1"] [attr="class","Alyssaback"] [attr="class","Alyssanert"]Alyssa admitting she was scared because of her previous relationships, no that wasn’t going to be said. Her ex hadn’t wanted the same things in life as she did on top of the whole murdering of her brother then getting himself killed type thing. No, she wasn’t into all of that. Sighing, she rested her head on the pillow. “I want to stop guessing at things. I want to know where things are going. I’m tired and exhausted and I want my own bed that’s comfortable.” Alyssa knew exactly what he meant but she decided to tell him exactly what he’d asked for. “None of this is your fault. The guy was drunk wasn’t he?” She’d overheard some of the conversation going on in her room about the other driver. “You can’t fault yourself for someone else’s stupidity babe.” Was she really sitting here giving him this lecture? Damn it, he wasn’t going to blame himself. No, she refused to let him and the look on her face said as much. Alyssa was afraid of those three words. Not afraid of hearing them but afraid of saying them. Three words that could make everything slip away. “The feeling is mutual; but I’m still going to look out for me, you, the baby. Just let me do what I do best.” She played with his hand. It was hard to just change things and not look over her shoulder. It was the way she was raised, the thing that the military had instilled into her too. Watch your six and watch someone else’s six. She could see the excitement on his face when he spoke about the baby. Alyssa placed his hand on her stomach. “This,” she paused for emphasis, “however, is your fault.” She was teasing him of course since it took two but if he was going to blame himself for something it might as well be the good rather than the bad. Steven listened intently to what Alyssa said, guessing things right then was about all he could do but knowing where they were going. It all depended on what Alyssa wanted too though he knew all too well the desire to be in your own bed that was comfortable. “Okay, well you don’t need to guess about us because if you want me to be then I’ll be right here for you. Where things are going, in a few months there will be three of us and I’ll make sure you get your own bed as soon as you’re cleared to leave.” He added deciding that was the best he could do right then. Going against doctor’s orders and pulling Alyssa home, as much as that was a fantastic plan he never wanted to be the reason she was hurt.
Rolling his eyes at the drunk comment he nodded, drunk but he still should have accounted for that one. He drove an ambulance for a living, avoided many crashes because usually he was heading to one but this time in the car. There was the feeling of nausea given the idea things could have ended the same way a second time. “I can, it’s my job to drive around that stuff and I missed it today.” He admitted feeling a little like he had let her and the baby down though the look on Alyssa’s face said he was hardly blaming himself for long.
Steven grinned at her hearing the feeling was mutual, those three words he said were tough to say but true and the one thing life taught him was to say what he felt at the time. Tomorrow was no good because it often never came. “I’m not stopping you but know that you’ve got someone to watch your back, the baby and I can just about manage to watch myself too.” He said smiling feeling her play with his hand. Steven was used to taking care of others, family, strangers, fire house family and when it came to himself that never really mattered much.
Even when he felt Alyssa place his hand on her stomach he smiled, it was a real thing and it was really happening. Steven made sure to rub his hand lightly over her stomach as he nodded. “I’ll take all the blame for that but you know...” He began grinning, “I never heard any complaints at the time so it’s your fault too. She or he is the best kind of fault and you’re the best person to make that fault with.” If there was blame sure he would be solely responsible for it and happily so.
