don't apologize
Jessica sighed as she stared up at the ceiling. Sure she was home but JJ was watching her every step. With her dad and stepmom moving out of Chicago, it left her here with her half brother. To be clear, Jess’ brothers were not two people she grew up with but were more of added later in her life. JJ was her half brother and Evan well he may as well be a surrogate. Right now, they both had her irked. After the train incident, she’d been relegated to house arrest. At this point, even Eyal was aware of the fact she wasn’t allowed to leave the house.
Evan had decided that she’d needed a security detail. Her stare continued to follow the railing along the second floor. Getting up she was careful what she did with her broken wrist, she didn’t want to hear JJ yelling at her. It wasn’t like Jess was helpless but if JJ had his way, she would be. She sighed as she fiddled with the coffee machine. Too bad coffee wasn’t strong enough for all of this; but it was too early for bourbon.
The conversation had been something to the effect of Evan getting her a protection detail simply because he could. She’d “get used to it” and that it “wasn’t a discussion.” Why did she have the two most protective brothers in Chicago? She was expecting this security detail to show up, and she was pretty certain that JJ was still here to speak his mind when they got there. Something that Jess did not necessarily want to happen.

JJ was doing what he thought was necessary for Jess to be safe, one train ride and she had almost died in his mind so really. Watching her every move was the best thing to do so he could at least be there for her. Being one of only two family members left in Chicago JJ felt like it was his responsibility to make sure his little sister was alright. House arrest was the easiest way to go about things especially when he had explained his reasons for why he needed time off. Looking after his sister as a good idea in all books as he had mostly just taken the leave he had banked or a few days of it.
The security detail was fantastic and JJ thought more about Evan for providing it for Jess. JJ had nipped out for like two seconds, that was all two seconds to do something and then when he got back to see her empty seat. He couldnt help but have that worried sinking feeling. “Jess!” He called as he scouted out around where she had been to make sure she hadn’t fallen over or was stuck some place. He was waiting for the detail to arrive and he had managed to lose her already he thought trying to work out where she would go to.
When JJ saw her fiddling with the coffee machine he shook his head. “You’re supposed to be resting.” He said in a brotherly over protective tone he had mastered. “I’ll get it, what coffee do you want?” He asked her without taking a breath as he moved to get a cup for her. “You shouldn’t be doing this, you could hurt yourself or fall over. You need to sit and rest up before your details gets there.” He explained not wanting to yell at her over it but then he was trying to help her.
If she wanted it or not was another question but it wasnt like he didnt try and he worried about her. The new guy or well he assumed guy as he hadn’t met this person yet so it could be a girl though either way, JJ wasnt exactly convinced they would have her best interests at heart. No she was safe at home and safe if he knew what she was doing and where she was.

don't apologize
It was coffee for crying out loud. When she heard her brother’s overprotective tones she could feel her pulse rising. “I’m not made of glass and I’m not going to fall over.” Maybe just breathing was a mistake, she might inhale gas (oxygen) and die. Honestly, she wasn’t sure who was under her skin more right now Evan or JJ. She took the cup from him and lightly set it on the counter with her good arm. Who the hell could sleep with all the medications she was on anyway?
Arguing with JJ why she didn’t need a detail would be a pointless matter. There was nothing he could do about it, that was all Evan’s doing. She ran her hand along the inside of the cup. At least with the detail she could do what she wanted and try and enjoy her life. Apparently, right now all she was going to see of the outside was through a glass window. Jess hated being under someone’s thumb.
Jess started the coffee machine but stared at the backsplash of the counters. It was hardly a stretch. Right now, Jess was calm on the outside. The inside? That was an entirely different matter. Jess was about two strokes away from slapping him in the face with her good hand for treating her like she was going to break.
Whether it was the truth or not Jess had to begin to wonder if this was why his girlfriend had left him. His overprotectiveness? Well he came by it honestly, it wasn’t like her dad was a saint in that department. Still, there was nothing she could have done to avoid being in a train accident. It wasn’t her fault. Though she could hardly argue that point right now. Nothing was worth wasting her breath on when he wasn’t going to listen to her.

Jackson just glanced at Jess, yes she was made of glass and she had done much worse than just fall over. A train crash if memory served and yes he was worried sick about her. So sure glass was pretty much what he was going with right then. “Yeah well stop finding trouble and I’ll stop thinking you are glass. You’re my sister and I’m looking after you like it or not.” JJ stated watching her with the cup, it was something he wasnt about to back down on because it wasnt like they had much family in the city.
JJ knew he had Martin and his sister but Jess, nope JJ was her family so sure he was being very protective. The one thing Jackson hadn’t ever been great at was showing emotions, he might he calm on the outside but inside he was worried sick about his family. “I’m only trying to look after you Jess if you don’t like it then fine but I’m not losing anymore family. Not the family I’ve just found.” He said not wanting to dig any deeper into that but hey he was only human at the end of the day.
If Jess had mentioned the girlfriend issue then he was sure he would have made the cup she had disappear into a thousand pieces. Sure he had been dumped or well whatever it was but JJ wasnt exactly hung up on it, sure he had done the usual. Hide away for days, work like crazy and then realise that everyone knew he had been dumped anyway so the truth was out in the world. Then there was a the train crash and JJ knew that he could have lost his sister.
So sure he was a little over the top in the protective sense. “So what do you need or want? Cushions? Food? Do you need me to get anything for you?” He asked wanting her to have everything she could possibly want within reach. Sure the detail would be there but he couldnt guarantee that they would be looking after what she wanted and not just her safety.

don't apologize
Jess didn’t even give him a response. It wasn’t her fault the train had crashed. Jess didn’t like to argue, and it was bad enough she was taking things hard on herself. Grabbing her cup she pushed past him to do things on her own. Anyone who touched her right now was going to lose a limb. The ‘back off’ look gleaned in her eyes with the redheaded fury she was capable of unleashing. Jess was usually quiet and it took a good bit to work her up.
“Don’t talk to me.” She stated when he asked what she needed. “Just… go somewhere else.” She snapped. At least Evan had been understanding, JJ was just being unreasonable. Sure Evan had put his foot down on the detail but that didn’t bother her as much as her idiot half brother. In a way, Evan was still sort of her boss. Though she knew he had separated himself from his father’s company.
She didn’t get to live her life just because her brother was afraid of losing her? Jess understood now why Evan’s girlfriend took stress out on the gun range. Jessica felt her body tensing underneath of her. She’d never been this stressed. She was thankful for the knock on the door. Maybe with a detail looking after her, her brother would let off being such an asshole.
Jess had already dropped Eyal a text message to tell him what was going on. Needless to say, in her text message it was easy to see how upset she was about the whole situation. Checking her phone she looked to see if he had replied. Right now she wanted to be anywhere but here.

JJ was only trying to help her out and this was the thanks he got for that. Really she was shoving him out of the way and giving him looks. “I am trying to look after you Jess, why are you being unreasonable?” He asked her as he didnt see it himself. JJ was simply trying to take care of his sister as promised to his parents, to all parents on all sides. No Jess had been in a train crash, broken her wrist and sure there was a certain level of things she didnt need to do on her own. He was attempting to do things for her to make her life easier.
Since when the hell had that turned into him being the bad guy in all of this? JJ was glad the detail was there, maybe they could talk some sense into Jess as he just left her to making her drink as he went to get the door. He was tired of losing family, tired of trying to be there and failing. Hell he had lost his mother or adoptive mother and now Jess had been in an accident. There was no part of that situation that was okay with him.
Sure he was protective but what brother wasnt, it was his sister they were talking about as he pulled open the house door. “Maybe you’ll have some better luck with her than I do.” JJ stated seeing it was the detail. He didnt know the faces but then again Evan had sent them so yeah they had to be okay. It wasnt like Evan was going to let anything happen to Jess either so really, yeah maybe they would have better luck with her as JJ showed them through to Jess.
“Well I guess you don’t need me to look out for you anymore because the details here.” JJ stated motioning toward them as he went back into the kitchen and pulled a bottle of water from the fridge. “You can yell at them all day long now for trying to help you. Might get whatever bug you’ve got out of your system so you can see reason.” Of course he was annoyed and it showed in his words more than anything else. JJ didnt tend to show much in the way of feelings, he couldnt understand it most of his life until he met his father.
Family trait as it were he figured but that didnt stop the bite in his words from time to time. Jess was being unreasonable in his eyes and that translated into snarky comments he wasnt usually for. No he was usually the straight arrow, said what it was and deal with it. His sister was the one person in the world that could get him to the point of snapping back at her for not letting him make her a drink. It sounded ridiculous but it was happening.

don't apologize Jessica sneered at her brother. It was very unlike her personality to do such things. “Looking after me is one thing, controlling me is another.” Her words snapped in the direction of her brother. Jess could handle protective, even over protective. Hell, Eyal had been protective of her since the accident. But to not let Jess enjoy her cup of coffee, was another.
Jess could hear the poison laced in her brother’s tones about the arrival of the detail. When JJ had his back to her she mimicked his whole ‘You can yell at them now speech’ her eyes rolled into the back of her head. Again, it wasn’t like Jess to argue and rebel against anyone but that’s exactly how JJ was making her feel.
Reason? How was getting a cup of coffee unreasonable? Jess set the empty cup on the counter. Leaving it there, she didn’t even care for the coffee anymore as she turned her back and walked out of the room. Holding her good hand out she’d checked the credentials like Evan had told her to do. Everything checked out down to the ID badges with their picture ID.
Part of Jess wanted her brother to understand. She wanted him to understand that she needed to do something, to spend her time enjoying herself while she recovered. Jessica moved past the security detail. Not too much mattered to her right now. Getting away from her brother would be a nice change.
(I wrapped us up but if you want to do another thread with these two we can after the New Year. We do still have to drag Eyal and JJ to meet each other after the whole Vegas mess too)
