HRT had just arrived on the scene of some crazy woman who had a federal agent tied up. Ziva did not want to deal with this today. Gearing up, she checked her weapon on the ride on the way over. So all of the main things were done. Ziva had already been surveying the area to find the best vantage point since it had come into view.
Ziva was in a work mode and with part of the team off today, it left her husband the one calling the shots. If anything she had absolutely no issues with this. There was also no conflicts of interest as she had always been able to compartmentalize decisions. Though she was only able to hope that Esau could do the same. She’d always been a little better at it than he had.
Once she was out of the car, Ziva looked to Esau. Though silent her stance suggested that she was waiting on her orders. This whole thing was a nightmare mess.

[attr="class","esaunah"] [attr="class","esauleft"] [attr="class","esauleft2"] | [attr="class","esauright"] The FBI Hostage Rescue Team had been called onto the scene. When Tier One operatives were called in, things were bound to be challenging, and this one was no different. A woman had taken a federal agent hostage on the third floor of a nearby building. The rest of the museum had been successfully evacuated, so the focus had shifted entirely to getting the hostage out safely. Esau had a negotiator on site, who was currently trying to talk her down, but the use of force might still be required. It was his job to prepare for that very real possibility. "Find your angle. She is an active shooter, who has already fired shots, so notify me immediately if you believe her behavior is escalating. The hostage is wounded, but we don't know how badly," Esau reminded Ziva. Not that he had to tell her this, but with Josh on vacation, as the second-in-command of HRT, Esau was now the one calling the shots. That meant operating the same way, as if he were here – making too many changes because of his absence would negatively impact team performance. However, Esau hadn't weighed in on Ziva's vantage point – that was something he would let her decide. No doubt she had already analyzed the area and decided on a suitable location anyway. Moving on to the next obstacle, Esau trusted Ziva to get into place and carry out her orders. His next priority was planning an actual breach, should that prove to be necessary, but to do that, he wanted as much information as possible. Pulling an officer to the side, Esau continued giving instructions. "Find me a blueprint of the building."
As soon as the blueprints were brought in, Esau set his assault rifle down on the command table, holding the map in place, so he could review possible entry points and paths through the building. One way or another, today was going to be a long day. Ziva Sokolov[attr="class","esauright2"] |

When Esau started blabbering about what was going on, Ziva wanted so badly to make some smart remark. No shit Watson she thought. No wait that wasn’t right. Maybe the others on the team weren’t listening or paying attention, but Ziva most certainly was doing her job. Ziva was already setting up as Esau was yacking in her ear.
Ziva could see the woman was getting irate with the agent. “We don’t have long. He appears to be hurt worse than we first thought.” Sometimes ‘the hostage is hurt’ was never descriptive enough, because no one could get the information. It drove her bonkers sometimes.
Regardless, Ziva had to have the green light to pull the trigger. It was chilly from her vantage point, but that hardly bothered her. She was trained for this, more than she had planned on when she was younger. No, she had wanted to be a ballerina and dance. She’d grown up to be… well her father’s killing machine. No, she saved people now. She had to remember that. Family had softened her; but she was still capable of the same ruthless battle she’d been trained for.

[attr="class","esaunah"] [attr="class","esauleft"] [attr="class","esauleft2"] | [attr="class","esauright"] If Esau ordered Ziva to take the shot, he knew she would make it without hesitation, but neither of them was back in Israel – there were more rules and regulations here in the United States with the FBI. Yamam would have taken the shot, secured the location, and allowed the medics to do their thing. No questions asked. America gave a new meaning to red tape. "You have eyes on the target. Tell me exactly what you're seeing."If HRT was going to act on this information, Esau needed more detailed intelligence. That was what most operations with this unit came down to: if. You had to predict the most likely course of action by the subject and the appropriate level of force to respond with. Failure to do so and the media and politics chewed you up and spit you back out. Josh could have this job back when he returned. Esau continued to manage several different moving parts, directing each into position, should a breach prove necessary. From what Ziva was saying, HRT might need to move in now. Grabbing his weapon, Esau prepared to lead the team in – he might have stepped into Josh's role as CO for the week, but he was still the unit's point man. That wasn't about to change because Josh was on vacation. Ziva Sokolov [attr="class","esauright2"] |

Why did he always have to have the play by play? Deep down Ziva already knew the answer, but that didn't keep her sarcasm quiet over the radio. "You want to know so bad, then swap with me. I cannot see hardly a thing." Ziva always told him everything she knew. It was part of her job. She knew better than to really have Esau swap with her, his skills were of much better use than hers when it came to leading the team tactically. She tried to shift her vantage point.
"There is yelling, the agent is bleeding from where I cannot tell. She is blocking view with her big ugly head." Though as soon as she said that the woman rushed out the door of the room. "Shot lost." Ziva rubbed her temple. "She left the room in a hurry." She could see the gun muzzle flash. "Shots fired." Ziva was doing her best to get another vantage point. Enter children. "There are kids with her. She is trying to get them to leave."
Ziva's stomach came up in her throat. Pulling the trigger with children there was likely unavoidable now. "Shot reacquired." As the odds for taking the shot mounted Ziva shoved images of Josiah out her head. The agent on the floor lay motionless. "Agent down." Well he'd been down but maybe someone would understand. She gripped her fingers into a fist. potential for physical harm vs. almost guaranteed psychological harm loomed in the balance. Ziva didn't want to take the shot as much as she didn't want to risk the lives of these children and she most certainly didn't want to be in Esau's position.

[attr="class","esaunah"] [attr="class","esauleft"] [attr="class","esauleft2"] | [attr="class","esauright"] Shots fired. Those two little words sent a chill down his spine – with children in the room, Esau had run out of options. In the span of just a couple of seconds, the situation continued to deteriorate when Ziva announced the agent was down. He felt his hand begin to ball into a fist. As much as he wanted to resolve this without taking a kill shot, that option had gone out the window. Esau didn't hesitate to give the order. "Take the shot." The bullet would take a life; meanwhile, the kids might be forever scarred by seeing it happen in front of them. But they couldn't wait. Esau made sure the team was on him. HRT would need to secure the area once Ziva dropped the target. Or, should the unlikely happen, and she miss, they needed to be prepared to mop up the resulting aftermath. No hesitation Ziva carefully pulled the trigger on her target. It was never easy, but her years of training gave her the ability to push that human in her aside. She was like a well oiled machine. “Target down,” she relayed back to Esau. Now all she could do was watch and take a minute to try and regather her humanity before she had to submit her weapon for evidence and that sort of thing. Ziva would be debriefed and all of that fun stuff without the team around.
She whispered under her breath for Esau to be careful. Though that was personal and so it wouldn’t come over the radio. That didn’t change things. She kept an eye out even as she gathered herself. There could be more people in the building and the last thing she was going to do was not provide the team with the vantage point that she had. It wasn’t a great vantage point but it was still information.
Ziva gripped her hand in a fist. From the looks of it, it was just the two children inside. Ziva started to fear the worst. Had they just watched their parents… no it was necessary. The Israeli refused to give into the part of her trying to rationalize this. The part of her that would keep her from being able to do her job properly in the future. She was not looking forward to the psychologists and the ‘investigation’ into her. She’d be out of the field now for three days and they would bring in another shooter. That’s how it worked, you fired you sat on the sidelines for a while. Guess someone along the line got trigger happy.

[attr="class","esaunah"] [attr="class","esauleft"] [attr="class","esauleft2"] | [attr="class","esauright"] Esau's team – though it still sounded incredibly strange to think of them as such – cleared a path to the downed target. Kicking the sidearm from beside the woman, he reached down to check for a pulse, then radioed a status update. The shot had been accurate. There would be no getting back up for her. Ziva, as any trained sniper would, had accounted for the possibility of body armor. Esau glanced up at the operator who was checking the agent for life signs. There was a small shake of his head. The agent wouldn't be getting back up either. "Ziva, target is confirmed down. You can stand down. Building is secure."In situations like these, you could always start second guessing yourself. Esau tried not to dwell on what if. You could approach a hostile encounter from multiple tactical avenues, but a different approach didn't mean a better outcome. Americans liked to operate 'by the book,' and Esau had followed the HRT manual to the letter. If there was one regret that gnawed at him about this: the two children had been forced to witness the entire thing. Even so, he would feel better about this whole thing when Josh returned to take command of the team again. Esau felt more comfortable when he got to act as point on an operation. As one of the other operators attempted to guide the children out of the building, the youngest – the boy – ran up to Esau, wrapping his little arms tightly around his leg. Walking out with the use of just the one leg would prove to be difficult, so Esau issued one more order. He reached down to tussle the boy's hair, trying to reassure him that everything would be okay. Considering what had happened, Esau wasn't convinced that it would be. "Send the paramedics in. We should have them look the kids over." Ziva Sokolov [attr="class","esauright2"] |

Hearing Esau say the target was confirmed down she slumped against the wall and made sure that she did everything by the book. Handing off her weapon she could only hear the radio blurring in the background. Ziva knew she couldn’t go in there. She had to debrief and get things togethers. Though she’d just killed a woman likely in front of her own children. A scar she knew could never be undone. Ziva took a breath and simply went through the motions waiting on the rest of the team to come back down. No, she was silent with most of them and that is how it was going to be.
This was one of those things, she was going to have to go home and talk to Esau about. Hearing something about paramedics she sighed, paramedics couldn’t help with the emotional stress the kids were feeling. Ziva slammed the door to the vehicle once she tucked the rest of her gear away. She’d fired, she was no longer allowed near this scene. Going to her time out in the car she put her eyes to the floor and her head in her hands. There were lots of reasons for hating this.
