When Brittany told him that she was fine, he nodded.
"Okay," he said. Don't push it. Don't make her mad. Give her space, he thought to himself. She had been through a lot and she didn't need him hovering over her. No, what she needed was for him to stay quiet and to just give her time to collect her thoughts. And he was going to give her that. See? He was learning. He could be sensitive. At least...he was getting better at it. Something that he was sure Brittany appreciated.

He watched as she signed the form that stated that she was refusing treatment, forcing down the urge to make her accept the treatment. He wasn't thinking straight, he knew this. He was thinking like a concerned husband, not a detached firefighter. And from what he could see, there were no physical injuries and it didn't sound like she had smoke inhalation, so he would accept her judgment in this instant, no matter how much he wanted to to go all alpha male on her and demand that she get checked out. IT would just lead to a fight and that was the last thing he wanted to do.

Beth's voice broke through his reverie and he forced himself to pay attention as she mentioned that her shift was ending, saying that she and Tanner could look after Leslie if the two of them wanted to get some sleep.
"What do you think, Babe?" he queried. If it was up to him, he'd take them both home and they'd all sleep together, but maybe Brittany was needing a break. He just wasn't sure...

Beth was pretty sure she was going to have to fill Tanner in on what was going on with Brittany because that seemed to be what had to happen lately. Beth was always showing up at calls involving his sister. Something had to give. In Beth’s eyes, Kelly wasn’t being protective enough. It made Beth appreciate the little spats with Tanner, at least she knew he was looking out for her. Beth shook her head as she put the clipboard away. Brittany was every bit as stubborn as her brother.

Brittany did wonder at times what happened to Kelly. His brash and firmness was part of the reason she’d fallen for him. That charismatic charm was getting rusty too. Maybe it was just the whole settling down thing or maybe it was just a Brittany thing. She felt like a space cadet right about the moment until she heard Kelly tossing questions at her.

“I don’t have a thought right now.” Frustration was playing and Brittany seemed to be along for at least this dance. Beth took Leslie from Brittany and put an arm around her boyfriend’s sister. It was maybe a sister thing. Brittany clearly was holding herself together for the sake of everyone else.

“You need some you time Brittany. I’ve been there. You decided you weren’t going to the hospital. That means you are going home and you are going to relax and take it easy. No isn’t a response, Brittany. You know damned well that Tanner would be saying the same thing right now.” No Beth was going to put to rest whatever disagreement Brittany could come up with. In the end Brittany just nodded knowing that Beth was right.
