With all due respectAren't you going to reciprocate? Do I always have to talk sense into people?
[attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]Martin had a day off that fell in sync with Sofia's finally. He had a lot on his mind with all of the mess his son was facing. He'd spoken to Gibbs about Jackson but it wasn't his decision there wasn't much he could do. He realized he was lost in thought before catching up to Sofia's pace. He took her by the back of the shoulders and started massaging her neck. He wasn't supposed to have fallen for another woman but he had. Teresa had been fuming about it. There were only a few years between Teresa and Sofia. Though as they'd pointed out, age was just a number and he was sure he wasn't the only one who saw it like that.
Martin's fingers dug into her neck mid-massage when he took a step closer. Martin was very protective of Sofia. While he knew some of what she had been through with her father, he wasn't about to let anyone look at her funny, much less touch her. He wrapped his arms up under her and hugged her from behind. From the outside looking in, it would look a protective hold. It always did. Though he was far from overbearing as a person. "Morning Gorgeous" he teased her with the good morning even though they had met up earlier. If only for the sake of reminding her that he thought the world of her.
Martin was a fan of the little things. Sofia had been the support system outside of his family. The one holding him together and he'd fallen for her. It was that simple. Kristina had, during her lifetime, set him in his ways. Sofia bettered him. It was hard to explain to people.

Finally a day off that fell into step with Martin’s. She enjoyed her down time but none as much as when she was with him, Sofia knew there was a lot going on with him. Jackson for one but then she tried not to rock any boats there as she was all too aware of Teresa‘s fuming about the two of them. She had hoped that they might at least get on but then that seemed to be far away if at all. There was an age gap but then could you really control who you fell for? Sofia had never seen the age difference just the man that was there, the person she trusted enough to fall for and that was all that mattered to her. Sofia felt his fingers as she sighed contentedly under his touch, it had taken her a while to get used to his touch but now she loved it. She was so used to flinching or ducking; trying to get out from under anyone’s hand but with Martin he made her feel safe. Her arms wrapped around his the minute she felt his arms hugging her from behind, she relaxed into his hug as she leaned lightly against him for a moment enjoying the protective hold he had on her. “Morning Handsome.” She teased right back smiling as she laughed lightly. Being there for him was what she wanted to do and then that thing had happened. Unexpected and yet there she was, fallen for a man who she had done her best to support through everything. Sofia spun in his arms turning to face him for a moment as she placed her arms over his shoulders before she smiled. “So you’ve got the whole day off.” She whispered into his ear before she pulled away slowly. [attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]Sheldon was left playing a balancing act, and he was just glad that Sofia had the patience of a Saint when it came to his children. One of the many things that secured his trust in her. He wrapped her up in arms and hugged her listening for her response.
“Mhmm, all day” he whispered. It wasn’t that Martin had just forgotten all about Kristina, there were still days. But he knew that she wouldn’t have wanted him to spend his life moping and he hadn’t been looking for anyone. It was hard not to care as much as he did for Sofia as he went through the tough times. She reminded him a bit of Kristina at times and maybe that is what he saw in her at first; but he knew she was as unique too. He also was aware her life hadn’t been an easy one and he had tried to help her return, and now here they were.
Martin was about to say something when he heard gunfire just as Sofia was pulling away. Martin took hold of her and tugged on her, not enough to make her frightened of his strength but strong enough to pull her towards him and twist around putting himself between her and the sound. “Go. I’m right behind you.” He called and he was right on her heels. He wanted her out of here; but he was going on instinct and training. The two needed to get out of here.

There was no point in forcing things with his children, there was a lot going on and Sofia understood that so if it meant waiting things out she was more than happy to do so. Feeling his hug she smiled wishing it could last forever though their one day off seemed like gold dust. It was rare and it made everything that bit more special, despite everything else she was simply happy to be there with him. “All day, sounds fantastic to me.” She replied in a quick whisper. Sheldon was the person she never though existed out there in the world; men had hardly set her the greatest example in life. Her brother had left and was now back, it was a like a whirlwind there and her father well there was the example in how not to go about life on the best of days. Sofia had never set out to fall for him or even close to it, she had simply wanted to be a friend as she had always been and now things had changed she found she enjoyed it Just as much. Her first thought was fire crackers as gunfire had never been a thing she was particularly used to by any means. In the moment he took hold of her and tugged on her she had expected to feel the same fear as she was so keenly used to and yet when he pulled her toward him and twisted around, she was still playing catch up. Go she thought he called go as her feet seemed to have more of an idea than her head as she started to run as she reached a hand out behind her to make sure he was there. For one she had no idea now where she was going or what was happening other than the gunshot that explained Sheldon’s reaction to it. “Sheldon...” She called out as she looked back to see what was going on. Sofia was half scared out of her mind at his reaction to it though at the same time there was no fear from her in what he had done. Sheldon Martin,

[attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"] Right now Martin’s only thought was getting Sofia out of there. It was innate to him. Protect those around him; he’d always been like that. He wasn’t really thinking beyond that. He saw her reach out towards him. That is when the bullet pierced his leg shoulder and he let out a growl. “Sofia. Didn’t I just tell you to go?” He hissed grabbing his arm. It wasn’t an angry hiss but he was getting protective. When he managed to catch up he stayed between her and the direction the bullet had come. There was no way he was letting anything happen to her. He eventually caught up again but stumbled the moment he knew it was safe. He leaned up against the nearby wall and yanked off his shirt, he tried to tie it around his arm but was failing. He began cursing under his breathe. Martin was usually easy going but when he was a bit worked up he could be quite a bear; though never taken out on those around him. Had he heard Sofia calling him by his first name, he may have corrected her. He’d have thought she knew better. Undoubtedly, she’d seen it on official paperwork somewhere. Nope, he hated being called Sheldon. Oh, that was a discussion for later.

Sofia never had to deal with people shooting at her that was far from her job description. Yes in the emergency room there were guns given some of the wounds they treated, people carried them and the police who were in and out on a daily basis but no one shot at them. Hearing him growl she looked puzzled for a moment until she realised why he had done it. Far from happy Sofia kept going when he hissed, it had never occurred to her she would hear that from him and she hardly knew what she felt about that. “Going.” She stated a little shakily. In a split second she expected to feel the familiar sting of a hand across any part of her he could reach or a constant string of words relating to how she was less than human though she kept going. It felt like being in a trance like state when she saw Martin catch up again though when he stumbled she knew what she had seen was real. “Oh no, no, no.” She pleaded watching him try to tie his shirt around his arm before she dared take a few steps toward him. Doctor, she was a doctor she could do this she thought hoping that her brain would kick back into gear faster than anything else would. No this was Martin, he was safe she told herself as she shook the thoughts from her head and reached to tie the shirt around his arm. “This is going to hurt.” She stated not sure if she was mad about it all or his hissing from earlier as she tightened the knot in the shirt tightly. She knew there was no other way but hurting people had never been her thing. Sofia had completely forgotten she had called him by his first name, she had seen it on the paper work but she had always called him Martin never Sheldon but when she was terrified she would never hold herself liable for what she said. “Shel...Martin are you hurt anywhere else?” She asked taking a moment to look him over as she pulled off her jacket to put it around him. “It’ll be okay trust me, just talk to me, anywhere else?” She repeated trying not to panic but this was not the emergency room she was used to. They were walking, there were trees not shiny tables with everything she needed within five feet of her. Sheldon Martin,

[attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]Martin didn’t like to growl or hiss at her, but that is as far as things would go when he was angry. Though in this case he was just frustrated that she wasn’t moving faster enough. She needed to be safe. Though he heard her shaking in her voice. Yeah… that hadn’t been the brightest move there Martin. Martin let Sofia take the shirt and tie it around his arm. When she said it was going to hurt he just nodded. He clenched his teeth and let air out of his nose. His breathing was heavy. “It’s just a graze.” He avoided using the word only. Martin wasn’t angry with her, he’d just wanted to make his point. “No, just my arm.” He replied his voice much calmer and softer than before. Martin didn’t like to get the least bit menacing but he could if he wanted to do so. It had its place and he was very selective about it. “When have I ever not talked to you?” He teased lightly. Telling a doctor he would be fine was probably not a smart move. “The bullet isn’t in there. I think it only sliced the skin.” He pointed out. There was the look of pain on his face. He took a breathe. “Car keys, my back pocket.” Martin added. He knew he needed a hospital, but he just didn’t want to say it. Hiding things from her though was also not a good idea. If anyone could help he knew it was her. Though Martin was in no condition to drive.

Sofia had no experience with guns or shooting, she dealt with the aftermath of all of that. The injuries and the safety of the hospital, there was no running or people shooting at her though a simple walk in the park had her scared to death of what was going on. Her reactions to help people were fast but this was a park not a shooting range or target practice. She hated to hurt him but it had to be done to help him as she glared at him for a moment. “Just a graze, since when did you get your medical licence?” She asked almost daring him to add only to that sentence. Graze or not he was injured and that never sat well with her. Sofia wanted to apologise for getting in the way and not moving fast enough though she was far more worried about him than making an apology. Sofia noted the change of tone in his voice as she relaxed a little, maybe there would be no retaliation she thought which was as strange for her as ever. She smiled and shook her head, “You’ve never not talked to me so do not start that now.” She explained smiling lightly, “So did you have all of this planned for today?” She asked hoping she was far from the mark with that unless he wanted to kill her but then he had been shot so for a plan it was pretty much backwards. “Okay Dr. Martin.” She replied with a slight teasing tone before she saw the look of pain. She reached into his back pocket and pulled out the keys before she pulled off her jacket and tied it into a makeshift sling for his arm. “Here, put this over your head and your arm in there.” She said deciding to leave out the ‘it will hurt’ comment as she passed him over her jacket sling. Sofia knew he was a proud person but admitting to needed help now and again, there was never anything wrong with that. “Once we get to the hospital I can get a better look at your arm, no arguing and no tough guy stuff.” She stated knowing she was hardly going to pass his care off to someone else as she placed her arm around him lightly in case he needed support at all. [attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]When Sofia chastised him he just looked at her speaking through his pain. “I may have been hit by a few bullets in my years.” He’d been grazed and shot where the bullet had to be retrieved. Though Martin didn’t chastise her at all for wanting to help. His hissing was more just bursts of pain rather than any general direction. Truth be told if Martin wanted to be a pain in the butt he very well could be. Martin reached out with his one good arm and pulled her close. He kissed her forehead. “You are safe. That’s all that matters to me right now.” He pointed out. Oh the bullet graze was totally worth it to know she was uninjured. He could see the panicked look on her face. “Sofia look at me.” His voice was soft. Though the labored breathing he was trying not to let out stronger hisses of pain. "It's okay to worry, but I need you to focus okay." He knew focus went haywire when worry set in. He'd been there. He wasn't going to say that everything was okay, because that was likely to cause a disagreement. “I need you to focus on the road. Can you do that for me?” He asked as she started fishing in his back pocket. Then there was something about a makeshift sling. He wasn’t going to argue with the doctor. Doing as he was told he just bit his lip through the pain. “You are the doctor sweetheart.” He was likely to put his foot down on somethings but when he knew she had things handled he was more than willing to let her take the lead on things. He wrapped his good arm around her and pulled her close into a hug. He knew what she was doing. Right now he was perfectly capable of walking on his own but too much blood loss, he knew that could bring a man to his knees. He didn’t push her away but he took his steps slowly towards the car.

His words seemed to register with her like a punch to the gut as she stood there a moment. “Well that stops right now, no more getting hit by bullets at all.” She stated firmly to him as if she had a choice in the matter. The last person she wanted to see in an emergency room was Martin but a few bullets sounded a lot like ‘I’ve experience with a lot more’ to her. She knew better than to ask the question she never wanted the answer to and once was quiet enough in her head and for Martin once was once too many. The minute she felt him pull her close and kiss her forehead she felt like she was in the safest place possible. He had a way of making her feel that way despite her earlier thoughts. “No, you need to be safe because you matter to me.” Sofia explained knowing she would have gladly taken a bullet for him but to start that conversation, it was likely better left for another day. She looked at him when his voice was soft, “Focus, yes focus.” She said trying not to worry or panic though it was on the tip of her tongue to snap back at him. How was she remotely supposed to focus when he had been shot? Road yes she had to get him back to the car she told herself before nodding at Martin. “I am focusing; I’m focused on you to hell with the road.” She replied as she took a breath and did as he asked. This was far from what she had imagined for the day but now that they were here she needed to keep her head and not give way to the worry and panic that felt like it might over take her at any moment. “Yes I am sweetheart, just do as I say and do not argue.” She said knowing full well he put his foot down on some things but this was not the time to argue with her. When he wrapped his good arm around her and pulled her close into a hug she wrapped her arm around him and smiled. Had this been at any other point in the day so far she might have been a lot more relaxed about it but right in that moment she was worried sick about him. Walking with him, the steps slow she made sure to keep her arm around him as she leaned up and kissed his cheek for a second. “You know you’re like a real life superman?” She said as she stared off at the path they had to take back to the car that felt as if it was a thousand miles too far. [attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]Martin wanted to tell her that sometimes it came with the job, though to be fair most of the bullets were when he was in the Army. “I was military. That just came with the territory.” He pointed out as he let her work and do her thing. This wasn’t the military but maybe it would ease her mind that this wasn’t a usual think for him anymore. Who knew?
“Don’t argue Sofia, focus alright.” He kept his voice soft but in a tone that suggested that not focusing wouldn’t help matters. He reached his good arm up to be at her shoulder. Aside from the dizzy and searing pain in his shoulder he felt only a tiny bit weak. Though he was hardly fighting her when it came to treatment, he just needed her to get them to a hospital. Why were doctor’s so stubborn?
“If you don’t focus on the road and we get into a crash. Sofia it will make things worse. I’ll let you know if things get worse. Trust me on this.” He could keep her up to date on her condition as long as he remained conscious and right now he was far from passing out.
Martin was in no way about to start an argument with Sofia, that was clear in his body language. “I should not have yelled. Sofia, I’m sorry.” He stated as they got to the car. He sat down in the seat and then made a comment about her earlier superman comment. “Superman had a cape. I can’t possibly be him.” He smirked. At least she had some sense of humour left. Sighing he leaned on the seat looking towards her. Feeling weak was an understatement.

“You got shot in the military!” She asked with a sudden burst of disapproval, ever since her brother had come back Sofia had struggled with had happened to him and although she had the greatest of respect for the military she had that nagging feeling of guilt and anger toward it too. “You know that’s it, no more getting shot for anything. It’s bad for your health.” Sofia stated again deciding it was about the only thing she could say that would make any sense right then. Sofia stared at Martin for a moment, his soft tone but words that suggested her losing it right now would be a bad idea. Great so now she was the crazy one. It was just her way to be stubborn and to find out what she could, the hundred and one questions to find cause but this she knew what the cause was. He had been shot and he was telling her to calm down? It was nuts, no worse than that crazy was what it was and Sofia had no idea what to do about that. Bullets far from just happened and what if someone had done it deliberately which almost caused her to have a heart attack. “Yeah fine, focus on the road Sofia.” She said trying not to snap but she was terrified and he was hurt. It made no sense to her as she tried to keep her focus and not to fuss over him until they were at the hospital. At least then they were in her house and she knew what to do there. “I trust you Martin but I know better than to trust a bullet.” Sofia explained as she took a deep breath that seemed to calm whatever nerves she had left for the day. Sofia winced when he apologised for yelling, it was far from his fault and yes she may have over reacted but when someone yelled it was more of a natural reaction for her to retreat than to stand up to it. Once he was in the seat Sofia smiled at his sense of humour as she sat in the driver’s seat and looked toward him. “Yes he did and what if you’re superman to me? We can always get you the cape.” Sofia asked as she tried to find a way to keep him awake or conscious. “So tell me Sheldon, how are you feeling?” Sofia asked lingering on his name, knowing he hated his first name but then if he was annoyed he was awake and she would take whatever came with that. [attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"]“That was a long time ago.” He pointed out as he took a few painful breaths. He didn’t help but chuckle about her saying it was bad for his health. “Spoken like a doctor.” He teased a little lightly. He didn’t want to fight with her but he knew she was stressed out. Though he was glad she was here.
Hearing her snap he sighed closing his eyes. It wasn’t like he had tried to get hurt, he’d just been protecting her. Martin couldn’t fault her for being upset. I didn’t ask you to trust a bullet. Mentally he was responding to her, but he didn’t speak them out loud. No, Martin thought before he spoke most of the time.
The only problem with hearing her use his first name was that it made him angry. Annoyed was more when people didn’t know him tried using it. Martin had to keep his anger in check right now. Martin passed out before they got to the hospital. He felt cold and he could hear what was going on around him but responding took too much effort.
When Martin woke up he was in a hospital room, and there was so surprise in that. Though he tried to survey who was in the room with him. He saw the outlines of a familiar face. He was trying to put together something to say. “Sofia.” He settled softly on her name. Though his voice was groggy, from being on pain killers.

Sofia found herself smiling when he spoke and teased her but it did little to defuse the situation. He was still shot trying to protect her and after everything that was far from sitting right with her. The one thing Sofia knew how to do was look after herself at least she tried to and having anyone else do that for her. It was a new situation to be in let alone have anyone take a bullet for her. Usual Sofia was quiet rational, calm and general kept her mouth shut unless she had to speak but this was a situation that was pushing her. It pushed her far beyond the usual stress of an emergency room or the nightshift from hell. Even a forty eight hour shift was seemingly easy compared to being in the situation where the person you loved had been shot protecting you. She had tried to argue it in her own head but when he stop responding she kept talking as best she could. Mostly along the lines of not dying and if he even thought of it she would kick his ass. The hospital seemed so far away but before she knew it they were there and she was working on him. Well that was until she was pushed away to deal with bloods and pressure reports, things she could do standing on her head blindfolded but she knew why. Sofia had taken to sitting by his bed once he had a room at the hospital. The sounds she was used to and the coffee cup in hand, it was all just another day at work but this time she was the one waiting for the news and waiting for Martin to wake up. She had checked his chart six times in the last hour alone making notes, looking at the monitors all while making sure everything was in order. She had just finished another round of checks when she sat down hearing him say her name. “Thank god.” She sighed, relieved to hear him talking as she smiled doing her best to hide the worry on her face. No she was in the smile and no one would be able to tell a thing mode she had. “Martin, welcome back. How are you feeling?” She asked as she could feel the sense of relief take over her happy to know that he was awake as she reached for his hand. “Don’t you ever do that to me again.” Sofia stated, no their day off was well in a hospital and he had scared her to death by getting shot. With all due respectAren't you going to reciprocate? Do I always have to talk sense into people?
[attr="class","nthlftsybdytxt1"] When Sofia came closer, Martin was so relieved to hear her voice. “You’re safe.” It was an observation. To him, that mattered. Though he knew she was worried also. “High as a kite. How much pain killer did you put me on?” He was thankful that she had, but he also knew that he didn’t want to become dependent on it.
Martin felt her hand and he ran his thumb over his hand. “I hate to break it to you but this is a hazard of my job.” He didn’t want to sugar coat things. “And while I will try to stay out of trouble, I will always protect you.” Martin’s voice was groggy, but it was full of honesty. He continued to rub his thumb over her hand. “I haven’t the strength to argue but I will not back down from what I feel is right.” He continued as he closed his eyes and smiled at her.
