“I like Chicago, the heat and me don’t get on too well sometimes.” He said knowing that there were many a day where he had managed to throw himself into the cool waves just because the weather was those few degrees too hot for his liking. It was why Chicago was great because a heat wave was a rare thing and the cold, well that worked better for him at times. “It’s a nice place, warm and very beautiful.” There were times when he had to pinch himself thinking back to the scenery there. The mountains, forests, beaches and that wasn’t including the Island life either.
Josh grinned and nodded at her, “If you don’t then I will.” He said when she mentioned she was unsure about calling herself fantastic. He listened to what she was saying about sports as he nodded to her, watching live sport was far better than being stuck in front of the TV watching it. “They work here too?” He asked her not sure what her family did but doctors or nurses he assumed. “You’ve never seen the ocean other than on a TV?” He said as he raised his brow at her before he grinned, “Okay so first thing you need to do on your day off is take a drive to the beach and see it in person. It’s worth it.” He stated then again he came from an island so the ocean was everywhere everyday.
He was curious about her and why she hadn’t chosen to travel, his travel had been work related or at least most of it but sometimes it was just nice to get away and visit some place new. He had done that a few times in his life and enjoyed it though he knew it wasn’t for everyone. “I’ll make sure to do just that.” He said squeezing her hand lightly though he wasn’t in any pain at all, okay none that he was going to be admitting to though he hoped he had at least made a pretty decent job of covering it up well enough.
Josh smiled and nodded when she replied to his question about everything being okay, there was something about her and something that had him wanting to know more about her but then it wasn’t any good if that street only went one way. Then again he must have been insane to think that someone like her would take look at him at all. “I’d like to think so but I can always get better at it, there’s always more to learn.” He said though there were days when being good just wasn’t good enough as he nodded to her. “I do love my job, good and bad days but the good cancels out the bad pretty quick. You seem to really love your job too and you’re great at it.” He said smiling at her.
He stared at her for a moment as he thought he had hear a ‘like to see you again’ though it took his head a minute to process that one. “If I get to see you again it would be worth it.” He said grinning at her not sure if he was over stepping or just not being forward enough. “Paperwork necessary? Woah you’ve obviously not filled out stuff in triplicate just in case two copies get lost but keeping the boss happy is all I can do. Even if about as much fun as I’m seeing tomorrow is what colour coded paper to print everything out on.” He joked though yes colour coded, filed, faxed, stapled oh it was going to be a very very long day for him he thought.
Josh saw Emily shake her head as he tried to smile at her, she seemed calm, cool and collected which for him was a dream come true given that there were days when he was trying to talk the victim down as well as the perpetrator but at least for that he had a team with him. He hadn’t a clue what was going to happen or any background on Sam other than he was a frequent flyer to the emergency room.
Seeing the tighten grip and the wince on Emily’s face Josh kept himself still not wanting to push Sam to doing anything stupid. “Okay, that sounds like fun, Ice cream cant beat that.” He said trying to smile, oh sure the guy liked ice cream well at least he had decent taste with it being chocolate he thought almost wanting to agree with Sam on that point. “Yeah sure Emily, don’t worry we can handle that and no more in or out sounds like a pretty good plan.” He said as he looked to Sam, “She’s a pretty smart lady your friend there.” He said trying to at least get the guy talking or even to realise that Emily wasn’t the enemy. Josh watched as people moved around, shutting doors, keeping patients inside their rooms as he nodded and turn his attention back to Sam.
“No it’s okay Sam, I’m not trying to take your friend but she’s my friend too.” Josh said watching as Sam stopped before going inside the room. Listening to Emily speak he wondered if she had done this a few times though ice cream seemed to be the answer he thought as he watched Emily to see that she was relatively okay. Seeing her close her eyes Josh wished there was something more he could do as he kept the smile on his face and just nodded to her as Sam yanked her into the room. "It'll be okay Emily." He repeated knowing he wasnt going anywhere until she was safe. Josh watched as the curtain was half way closed as he took the opportunity to hurry up the ice cream as he set off down the hall.
To hell with his stitches as he found the person he was looking for as he took the ice cream and spoons from them. Josh made his way back to the room as he knocked on the door and waved at Sam and Emily as he held up the ice cream. “Mind if I come in and drop this off?” He asked as he looked at the ice cream, “Chocolate is my favourite too Sam, I mean sure people rave over strawberry and mint choc chip but chocolate is the best of all right?” He asked him smiling as he slid the door open slowly with his elbow which in turn pulled at the stitches in his side as he winced a little. Great time to feel pain he thought as he tried to focus on Emily and what he had to do to get her out of there or at least get the knife away from her.

Emily blushed a bit when he insisted that he would call her fantastic, and shook her head a bit when he asked if her family worked at the hospital, “Well not exactly, my brother is a paramedic so he brings me quite a few patients… and my baby sister is this close,” she gestured with her fingers, “to finishing nursing school. We’re both really proud of her.” She shook her head again when he asked her about seeing the ocean other than on tv. “Nope… never been than far from home. It’s most definitely on my to do list, but it would probably take more than one day off to enjoy… I’m trying to save up enough time off and find one of my friends to go with me… not much fun when you have to go by yourself.” She shook her head and smirked at him when he assured her that he would at least squeeze her hand if he was in any pain, “I will never for the life of me understand why men think that they have to be so brave… and stubborn. I mean if you’re hurting you’re hurting… you don’t get any kind of prize for suffering through this like a tough guy. Sheeesh.” She smiled up at him before she continued, “Although, I do have to admit that you are pretty good at hiding your pain… better than most.” Emily smiled at him wishing that she had met him somewhere other than work, because she certainly wanted to know more about him but work was hardly the place to be trying to get to know someone. “There’s always something to learn no matter what your job is, when you stop learning and start thinking that you know everything you become dangerous yourself. Thanks for noticing though, I do love my job… couldn’t really imagine doing anything else. You just think I’m great because I’m the one holding your hand, you’d think the same thing of any of my coworkers that were in here taking care of you.” She was busy trying to convince herself that she was imagining things, that there was no way any guy like Josh would even give her a second look if she wasn’t the one taking care of him. She blushed as she could feel him staring at her, yeah no chance he’d missed her saying that… not that she didn’t mean it, because she certainly had meant what she said. When he replied stating that if he got to see her again it would be worth it, and grinned at her like that she couldn’t help but smile back for a moment. She gathered her thoughts again when he started talking about all the paperwork that he had to do. “Are you afraid of getting bored tomorrow or something? You haven’t had enough excitement today to last you at least a couple days?” Standing in the hallway Emily may have seemed calm and collected on the outside, but on the inside she was anything but. All she could think to do was to try to keep both herself and Sam as calm as possible, she was no good to anybody if she let herself fall apart. She kept her eyes glued to Josh, knowing that he was there and dealt with this on a regular basis were about the only things helping her keep herself together at that point. Emily wanted to cry when Josh stopped moving, and when he started talking about fun and ice cream everything started to blur together she felt like she was going to lose it. ‘no no no, keep it together Emily… that’s the only way to get out of this. Trust yourself and trust Josh, nobody is going to get hurt.’ When Josh assured her that they could handle making sure everyone else in the ER was safe and that nobody else came in or left she relaxed just a bit, and she wanted to laugh when Josh called her a smart lady. “Smart ladies don’t tend to end up in situations like this.” She huffed. Sam glared at Josh, “No! She’s only my friend. You hurt me, you’re bad. I have to keep my Emily safe.” Emily almost laughed at the irony of it all. She just wished they’d hurry up with the ice cream already. She could feel Josh watching her and all she could do was hold herself together the best she could and try to keep Sam happy. When Emily heard Josh assure her again that everything was going to be ok, she felt a few tears escape the corners of her eyes. Taking a few more breaths to steady herself she sat down next to Sam as he started talking nonsense. Emily didn’t even try to converse with him, she knew there was no reasoning with him at this point. She wondered exactly what her coworker had been doing in here with Sam as it didn’t seem that they had given him any medication yet. She was just hoping that the ice cream would distract him enough to turn her loose. Emily saw Josh leave, and couldn’t explain the feeling of panic that came over her then. She felt like she was all alone with a crazy guy and his knife. When she heard the knock at the door and saw Josh standing there with the ice cream she wanted to cry. She felt so relieved that all she could do was look at Josh and smile weakly. Emily barely registered what Josh was even talking about as she followed him with her eyes. She had noticed him wince when he slid the door open, and she kept an eye on him for any more signs of pain or bleeding from his side. At least it gave her something to focus on other than Sam and his knife. Sam instructed Josh, “Put it on the table and go away. Don’t come back… I don’t like you.” Emily looked at Josh, she didn’t want him to leave… in fact the thought of him going anywhere scared her more than she cared to admit, but judging by how tight Sam was holding her he really didn’t like Josh and there was no way he was going to turn her loose even for the ice cream as long as Josh was in the room. Emily nodded in Josh’s direction, “I.. uh… I’m ok… or I will be, as soon as he starts eating his ice cream. Just wait for me on the other side of the door, and we’ll take another look at your side as soon as I’m done in here.” She said hoping to reassure herself as much as Josh. Emily hoped that Josh was thinking along the same lines as she was, it took two hands to eat ice cream and if Sam was eating his ice cream she should be able to get away from him. She was also hoping that he would take the hint and stand where she could see him. Somehow just knowing that he was there gave her some strength and peace of mind. Tag: Josh Cameron

Hearing about her family he smiled, it was the one thing he didnt know much about. The concept of family, sure he had the one man who had given him a chance at a real family but Josh hadn’t ever managed to find anyone to call his family or even have one of his own. He guessed it just wasn’t in the cards so he stuck with his work family though that was a tough enough job some days. Siblings was a new concept to him as he hadn’t ever had done of those before. “Congratulations to them both, a paramedic a nurse you have a talented family and you too of course.” He said before she thought he was saying anything otherwise.
“It’s nice that you’re all close and I’m sure you sister has nursing school in the bag already.” He said, well Emily knew what she was doing to really if it translated at all then her sister would do too. “No you’re right by yourself isn’t as much fun but you’ve a whole lake in Chicago so for a day off that might have to do but if you do get the time... the ocean is fantastic.” He said, honestly when he was a kid he was either on a beach, in the ocean or having something to do with it all simply because it was calming, relaxing and the most beautiful sights he had had ever seen.
Josh chuckled as he nodded and grinned right back at her. “Guy’s are guys and like I said i’ve had worse so this... is just a scratch.” He said, sure a pretty big scratch but then there wasn’t any way he was going to show pain unless he really had to. “Thanks and i’ll take better than most even though it doesn’t hurt. Do you get many people hiding things from you when it comes to pain?” He asked not sure if that was a good or a bad thing for an ER.
Any other place and he would have done everything he could to get to know her better but bonding over stitches and an emergency room wasn’t exactly the most conducive place. He listened and nodded again agree with what she said, when you stopped loving what you do it’s time to step away and make a change. “Nope pretty sure one your co workers wouldnt have offered to do that and two you can tell if a person loves what they do. Three I do think you’re great even if you weren’t holding my hand either.” He said knowing it was true, she was great. So he didnt know the ins and outs of everything but from what he knew so far he thought she was great.
Was she really smiling back at him when he had mentioned seeing her again. No he was probably just reading far too much into it, she was just being nice he told himself as he grinned at her again when she spoke about getting bored. “No not afraid of it but I want to be doing something, fighting crime not my desk and the paper there.” He said with a grin, “Excitement yes I’ve had enough of that but you never know what happens next, could always be something to save me from the paperwork besides what if I get a paper cut worse than what’s on my side... it can be just as dangerous sat down.” He said as if his files might attack him at any moment, they might if he let the piles get any higher but until that point it was anyone’s guess.
Looking at Emily he tried to keep himself calm and his voice too when he just wanted to yell at Sam to get her go. If only people were that easy he thought, a yell and it would be done with but no it wasn’t fair on Emily to screw things up not that he would ever do that. Sam wanted ice cream well that was a good thing though he didnt like the fact that he couldn’t get to Emily as he tried to smile and keep an ‘everything’s okay’ look on his face for everyone involved. The last thing he wanted was for Sam to panic about anything and hurt someone.
Josh grinned and shrugged, “Happens to us all Emily, smart or not.” He said about to tell her that he wasn’t exactly smart to get landed in the emergency room but then it had turned out okay up until Sam managed to get free again. Josh saw the glare Sam had as he nodded, “You keep her safe Sam I know she likes you because she’s told me about you.” He said calmly, “I want to keep her safe too and you Sam. I didnt want to hurt you but you hurt me too.” With that Josh opened his shirt so that Sam could see what had happened, he knew it wasn’t mean because the guy wasn’t in his right mind but still it had happened.
Standing there unable to do anything Josh felt awful as he saw Emily’s tears, he tried his best to smile at her though he wasn’t sure it was helping any. He really did need to get her away from Sam and keep her safe, what part of ‘don’t let him up’ did people fail to understand though that was a question for later. Right now he was worried about Emily and Sam in turn. Leaving was the only way to get the nice cream he figured though when he came back and knocked on the door to see her smile he nodded lightly.
Josh placed the ice cream on the table as he shook his head lightly, “I can’t go anywhere right now Sam, I want to but you holding Emily like that no one can go at all.” He said trying to get the man to understand that he wasn’t going anywhere but to the door of the room. Josh took a few steps back toward the door as he leaned against the wall for a moment listening to Emily. “Sure I’ll be right on the other side of the door.” He said taking that final step out of the room though he kept himself visible and within reach to grab either Sam or Emily depending on what happened.
It took two hands to eat the ice cream so if he could move fast enough which he was sure he could despite the stitches he was sure he was going to pull he could at least grab Emily and get her out of there. “Looks like nice ice cream why don’t you get some before it melts... I mean the heat in here phew.” He said fanning his face for a moment as he looked at the table, well if Emily could move to get ice cream it could at least put a table between her and Sam. “Might not be there too much longer. Emily do you want to get some ice cream too?” He asked hoping to at least get Sam to make an attempt at the ice cream and if Emily could move around the table to the other side it gave her distance too.

“Mighty big scratch you have there Dr. Josh,” Emily giggled. “Though I’d really hate to think of you having worse, I’m sure it comes with the territory.” She smiled and shook her head when he took what she said as a compliment and laughed when he asked about people hiding their pain, “Actually it’s usually quite the opposite, they’re in here trying to score the good stuff. Don’t get very many willing to turn down the pain medicine, but I have come to find that it’s usually the ones that need the stuff that say they don’t want it.” The doctor who had been trying to keep quiet actually chuckled when Josh started his list. Emily glared at him, “Find something funny Dr?” He shook his head and smirked at her. “Well thanks Josh it’s nice to know that at least someone appreciates my hard work, although I have to admit I’m not working all that hard right now. If all my patients were as easy to deal with as you my job would be a lot easier.” She just wished that the doctor would hurry up and leave the room already, because she knew that even though she and the doctor were good friends he would never let her hear the end of this one. Emily couldn’t seem to stop smiling, Josh had said that he wanted to see her again. He was probably just being nice she thought, always a good idea to be nice to your nurse and all. “Well Mr. Crimefighter looks like you’ll need to fight crime from your desk for at least one day. If the papers attack you just give me a call I can fix a papercut without the help of a doctor, I have plenty of band aids. If it’s the sitting that scares you, you could always do your paperwork standing up.” She was getting frustrated, it didn’t take this long to get ice cream. All she could do was focus on Josh, because looking at everyone else running around was only making her more anxious. She tried to keep her breathing even and not let her face show how scared she really was. She was glad Josh had dealt with situations like this before, because it was easier to stay calm when he at least appeared to be completely calm and at ease with what was going on. She wanted to tell her coworkers to stop running around in a tizzy and go sit down somewhere because they were distracting her. When he shrugged and grinned at her reassuring her that it happened to everyone smart or not, she managed a weak smile in return. “I’m just glad I’m smart enough to have friends… that are going to make sure to get me out of this mess in one piece.” Emily closed her eyes again when Josh told Sam to keep her safe, at least he said he wanted her safe… that had to be a good thing right. When Josh opened his shirt she looked him over to make sure he was still in one piece, or at least that’s what she told herself. “Josh… you’re going to hurt yourself again, and it’ll be worse this time. I know better than to tell you to stay out of this… but please be careful.” His calm demeanor and smile were about the only things keeping her sane at this point. That and knowing the fact that this is what he did for a living, made it a bit easier to see light at the end of the tunnel. She was still wondering what had possessed anyone to turn Sam loose, but there was no sense in dwelling on that at this point. It was however something that she would find out later, because she knew without a doubt she was going to have a heart to heart conversation with whoever had decided that it was a good idea to turn the guy loose and let him get his hand on a knife. Emily watched him place the ice cream on the table, and nibbled on her bottom lip trying to figure out what her next move was going to be. She nodded when Josh told Sam that he couldn’t go anywhere. “Sam… if you just let me go, and give me the knife you can have all the ice cream you want. I promise. I’ll even bring the ice cream over to you.” San just shook his head and kept looking at Josh. “He… he needs to leave. Leave!... Leave… NOW!” Sam yelled as he was starting to shake a little bit and Emily could feel it. She smiled at Josh and nodded when he said he’d be just on the other side of the door. She didn’t want him to leave but if Sam was going to get this worked up about him being close, then the only option was to put some distance between them. She sat there in silence with Sam for what seemed like forever, when she noticed him looking between her and the ice cream. “Sam, your ice cream is going to melt if you don’t eat it… and that would be a waste of good ice cream. So… Josh isn’t in here right now, it’s just you and me. How about you give me the knife and turn me loose so that you can eat some of your ice cream.” She could tell that Sam was thinking about it and trying to figure out how to eat his ice cream. She held up her hand palm up gently coaxing him to hand over the knife. “Sam, I’m not going to hurt you and I promise Josh won’t come back in here if you just give me the knife and turn me loose.” When Sam placed the knife in her hand and turned her arm loose her first instinct had been to run out the door, but having promised him ice cream she forced herself to calmly walk over and push the table over to him before turning and walking out the door and straight into Josh. She dropped the knife to the ground and grabbed on to Josh’s shirt like it was the only thing keeping her upright. She sniffed a couple times before mumbling into his chest, “You do this crap for a living? I think you might be a bit crazy… but thank you for being here today.” Tag: Josh Cameron

“Why thank you Emily, I thought that too.” He said grinning at her. “Oh it does trust me, anything that can be used as a weapon usually is and that isn’t including fists and feet.” He said knowing he had dodged a few strange things in his time, if it wasn’t stuck down then it was likely to be launched was his way of looking at things. Josh thought about what she said about the pain meds, well he already had something from the doctor though where that left him he had them but didnt feel the need for them right now. “Well I can say it doesn’t hurt too much at the moment so I’m all good for pain meds at the moment.” He said grinning at her again.
Josh simply smiled at the doctor, oh he wasn’t taking his list back at all as he nodded to Emily. “Oh I appreciate it a lot so thank you for being a fantastic nurse.” He said as he shrugged, “I can always be more of a pain if that would help at all?” He joked though when he did see people being a pain in an ER it was times when he did want to go over and just yell at someone. The people there did what they could do and hindering or annoying them in anyway wasn’t a smart choice at all. At least in his mind it wasn’t and thinking that Emily got hassle of people no that wasn’t acceptable either.
He did want to see her again and sure be nice to your nurse but Emily, there was something about her. “Trust me I’ll call you if they do, might even come in again just to see you.” He said as he realised he probably sounded like a budding stalker at that moment. “Paperwork standing up, I’ll have to try it and see if it works better, I mean sitting down for it’s painful enough but standing sure might make the day go quicker too so I can get back to my crime fighting from the outside not just a desk.” He joked, sure desk duty wasn’t the end of the world but then it was if a call came in and he was stuck doing desk work.
Josh was used to dealing with complete strangers, the people he met for that one day where it was make or break. He had spent the past time chatting away to Emily and now she was at knife point with a man he had tried to talk down earlier and it ended up in a fight with both of them in the Emergency Room. All he could hope for was that round two went an awful lot better though ice cream seemed to hold some promise to that at least he thought. “Yes you are and trust me, nothings going to happen to you. Just stay calm and it will all be alright.” He said nodding to her. He had to get her out of there he thought watching her close her eyes.
“Emily right now you’re all that bothers me.” He said smiling; his side was simply secondary to her being safe if it be worse or not he didnt care as long as she was safe. He felt guilty given that he brought Sam in and didnt make sure he was secured and stayed that way. It was his fault that Emily was not being held like she was. “Careful is my middle name...i’ll even sight in on the release forms. Josh Careful.” He said grinning at her for a moment, if he was calm then others might follow was his idea.
Watching Sam and Emily he had hoped that Sam would come around but him leaving seemed to be the main issue as he backed up a little. He didnt exactly want to leave Emily but then staying there he didnt want to be the reason she got hurt either given how Sam was yelling and shaking a little. “Leaving Sam, I’m leaving.” He said wanting him to know he was going. Josh listened to Emily talk to Sam, she was doing great at it too better than most would have been given the situation. Josh didnt even move as he held his breath ready to take a run at Sam again if needed as he watched Sam place the knife in her hand.
Josh wanted to tell Emily to be calm but she seemed to have everything under control as she moved the table to Sam and walked out of the door. When she walked into him and dropped the knife to the ground, he kicked it away to make sure that Sam wasn’t going to be able to get it as he wrapped his arms around Emily tightly glad to have her out of that room. Hearing her sniff a couple of times he rubbed her back lightly. “It’s okay, you’re safe now. He can’t hurt you.” He said as he pulled the door to Sam’s room shut, he would let security deal with it as his main concern was still Emily and if she was alright.
“Yeah I do and only a bit crazy, better than what most others say.” He answered as he nodded, “It’s no problem and happy to be here. Sorry that he got hold of you, I should have stayed with him and made sure he was secure.” Josh said as he looked her over for a moment as he pulled away from her slightly to look at her. Josh ran a hand over her side where the knife had been trying to see if she was hurt or alright. “Did he hurt you Emily? Are you okay?” He asked keeping a close eye on her for any sign of pain other than that of being held at knife point.

“Ok, but for future reference, you don’t have to be injured to stop by and visit. In fact, I think I’d much prefer it if you weren’t a patient the next time I see you.” She said with a small laugh and a smile in his direction. She silently chastised herself for thinking that he was being serious about coming to see her, surely he was just joking to make the time go by faster. She hoped he was being serious though, there was something different about Josh that left her wanting to know more about him. However, she realized that this really wasn’t the time or place to do that. There were places that were much better suited for getting to know each other than the Emergency room. Emily had never been in a situation like this before, certainly never been held at knifepoint. Thankfully she was able to hold herself together enough to know that panicking wouldn’t do anybody any good and if she wanted to get out of this unharmed she needed to stay calm and hopefully Sam would follow suit. The strangest thing was how much comfort it brought to Emily just knowing that Josh was there, she knew that he did this sort of thing for a living so if she was doing something wrong surely he’d let her know. Hearing his reassuring voice telling her that nothing was going to happen to her and to stay calm and that it would be alright made her feel about as good as she was going to feel when being held with a knife to her side. “O…Ok, I can do calm…” She took a deep breath, “just don’t run off and leave me alone, please.” When Josh told her that she was all he was bothered by at the moment, she shook her head and if it had been under any other circumstances she would have fussed at him for not taking care of himself. However, given the current circumstances she just smiled at him. When he went on to joke about signing his forms as Josh Careful she shook her head again and held back a small laugh. What was it about this guy, she was being held at knifepoint and he was still making her want to laugh. It made it easier to focus on him and not everyone else scurrying around. As Emily watched Josh back away she had a brief moment of panic, her eyes flashing to his she had to restrain herself from telling him not to leave her. She realized that for right now everything was in her hands. She had to try and convince Sam to hand over his weapon peacefully so that he could eat his ice cream. It was hard, but she managed to keep her voice calm and reassuring a she watched Sam hand her the knife. Every fiber of her being wanted to run straight out of the room when he turned her loose, but she reasoned that if Sam was in fact eating his ice cream he would be less likely to care or notice if she left the room. So shaking only slightly she managed to push the table over to Sam and watch him pick up the first ice cream before she had made the move to leave the room. When she collided with Josh outside of the room, the whole ordeal began to take it’s toll on her. She noticed him kicking the knife away from the door but didn’t turn loose of his shirt because she honestly felt like she might fall over if she let go. She noticed him gently rubbing her back and reassuring her and it felt good, if she had thought she could form coherent words at that point she would have told him so. Instead she just nodded into his chest. Part of her was disappointed when he loosened his hold on her to pull Sam’s door shut, but she was still rational enough to know that they needed to contain Sam to his room until something else could be done with him. She listened to him talk as she clung to him, but looked up at him when he apologized. “Uh uh… don’t even start, this is nowhere near your fault. If people had listened to you Sam would still be secured to the stretcher in there. You came out to help even when you didn’t have to, and could have hurt yourself even more in the process. So don’t you apologize to me for anything. Understand?” Emily sighed when he pulled away from her, she wasn’t quite ready to turn him loose yet. When he started feeling her side and fussing over her she smiled at him. “I think I might have a scratch on my side, and I’ll even let you put a band aid on it if you let me look at your stitches again. I know you pulled on them when you opened the door, so I need to make sure they’re all still intact.” It felt good to get back to worrying about someone else, she realized that Josh’s hand on her side felt pretty good too as she smiled up at him. “I’m good though, I’m ok… or mostly ok… about as good as can be expected considering.” Right about then she realized that all of her coworkers were staring at her and Josh. She fixed them all with a glare and asked one of her friends to make sure that her other patient was still okay because she needed a minute to get herself together. “Let’s go back to your room Josh so I can take a look at your stitches and make sure you didn’t pull any of them out. Plus I need a minute to breathe before I can even begin to think about going back to work, and I’d prefer to take that minute without everyone staring at me.” Emily decided that after everything she had been through today that nobody would hold it against her if she threw protocol out the window and figured out some way to see Josh again outside of work. The problem was figuring out how to go about doing that. Tag: Josh Cameron

Not having to be injured to stop by sounded good to him as he grinned at her. “Oh, you’d prefer it.” He said smirking lightly as he nodded again, “Then you never know, I might just come back in here for the food then.” There was no way that Josh would be coming back for food, for one he hadn’t tasted any but for Emily it was worth a trip to the ER just to see her. She was different from other people he had met and he hadn’t smiled as much in years either which was enough of a sign for him to know that she was someone special.
Usually Josh didnt have any prior contact to the people he met through work, all their information was usually fed to him via an ear piece and he had a trained negotiator right behind him. Yes he was trained too but didnt often use it as he didnt specialise in it. There was no denying that Sam was giving him some refresher courses on it though he just wished it hadn’t been Emily that had been taken. She didnt deserve that at all and she was helping people not hurting them. “You’re doing great Emily.” He said positively as he nodded, “I’m not going to leave you, just stay calm for me okay.” It was the key to everything when things went wrong, it might be tough to do but it was worth it.
Seeing her shake her head, well there wasn’t much she could do so arguing over it was simply just words but now wasn’t the time to start that argument. His focus was getting Emily out of there regardless of himself which was how he worked. Making her laugh was great, she had one of those laughs that made him smile and if she was happy then despite the circumstances as to what was going on then he could at least keep a smile on her face for as long as he could do. It wasn’t exactly the perfect plan but making her laugh and keeping her calm were both things that would help.
He saw her eyes and that brief moment of panic as he just smiled at her. “It’s okay.” He said softly not wanting her to panic but he was the problem in the room. He wasn’t making things any better which meant stepping away little though watching her get Sam to give her the weapon. She would have been a great addition to the FBI he thought, she knew her stuff to keep a person calm and despite his fifty fifty assessment of her running out of there. He was surprised that she just calmly left without him having to give her directions of any kind.
Josh didnt expect her to have a full conversation, he was just glad to have her out of there and in his arms. There really was something about her that made holding her seem the right thing to do as he wondered if it was all in his head. Yes she had just been held in a room against her will, he was the first person she had bumped into, probably normal to do that he thought shaking any further thoughts from his mind before he got himself into trouble.
The one thing he hadn’t counted on was her touch response to his apology. “I had to help you, I wouldnt have done it any other way. I am sorry though but I’m glad you’re okay.” He said using the okay as loosely as possible. Was a person really okay after that he thought, yes he did that every day usually but for her he wasn’t sure if this happened regularly at a hospital or just a few times here and there. “And yes I understand.” He said still worried about her.
“A scratch?” He said realising that he had called his wound a scratch, “Deal but you get looked at first and no arguing okay. I think they are, I can’t really feel much of them anyway.” So yes when he moved it hurt but then to make sure she was safe he wasn’t going to sit it out because of that. Smiling back at her Josh kept his hand in place just in case she was tell the whole scratch story. Listening to her talking Josh nodded not taking any notice of anyone else around the hospital, only Emily. “That sounds good all things considered.” He said as he thought for a moment, “If you need to talk about it then don’t hesitate to. Anything at all.” When Josh looked up from her a moment he saw the co-workers staring as he felt himself go a little red.
It wasn’t embarrassment at all, more a healthy dose of what was acceptable when he wanted to see her again but he wasn’t sure about asking her. “Sure of course. You did a great job in there, you should be proud.” He said as he placed an arm around her to walk her back to the room he had been in. “Listen you’ll need more than a minute.” He added as he decided just to go for it and see if he had completely picked up the wrong end of the stick with things. Sure it had happened before but then he wanted to see her again, outside of the emergency room and the hospital.
"How about, I make sure you’re okay, scratch and all. You take a look at me and since I interrupted your lunch I will take you for lunch to give you some time to come around from this?” He offered trying to figure out a way to make her feel better and try to see her again without the whole hostage side of things. “As a nurse I’m sure you know all about shock, blood sugar.” He said, so he wasn’t a doctor and it was obvious but then he didnt want her upset over things and she needed to eat something too. “It’ll give you time to think and I get to know that you’re okay too.” He said by way of an explanation as to why he was asking her that.

Emily had been staring at the floor when she heard Josh tell her that she was doing great and all she could think was that if she was doing so great then why did Sam still have ahold of her. When he asked her to stay calm for him and reassured her that he wasn’t leaving she looked up at him and nodded. “I’m going to hold you to that.” Emily’s mind was in a million different places at once. Trying to remember if her brother was working today, or if Isla had any reason to be in the hospital today. Worrying about the other patients in the ER, because they needed help not to be locked in their room scared about what was going on out here. Thinking about Josh pulling his stitches. Truth be told it was much easier for her to think and worry about these things than to think about being held by a crazy guy with a knife. Her eyes flashed to his when he told her that it was ok. She wanted to ask him how anything was ok and why he was leaving but realistically she knew that he didn’t have any other choice as his presence in the room seemed to be causing Sam quite a bit of distress. If Emily as going to have any chance of calming Sam down she was going to have to do it with Josh on the other side of the door. Once Sam handed her the knife and turned her loose everything happened in a blur for her, and she’s not real sure how she managed to stay as calm as she did until she made it out the door. The full weight of what had happened to her didn’t really hit her until she was safely wrapped in Josh’s arms. When he held her she didn’t feel like she had to be strong anymore she felt like she could fall to pieces and he would hold her up. She allowed herself to do just that as he held her. Sure he was the first person she bumped into, but she would have hardly allowed herself to hold on to one of her coworkers like they were the only thing keeping her upright. She was enjoying the feeling of being held and comforted. His apology had caught her a bit off guard, but she meant every word of her response. He had been amazing and the last thing she wanted was for him to feel guilty about anything. Listening to his response she laid her head back on his chest “Shhhh you did help me, a lot. You have absolutely no reason to be sorry because I hate to think what would have happened if you hadn’t been here. I’m glad I’m ok too, sure beats the alternative.” She said trying to lighten the mood a bit. “Relax, when I say a scratch… I mean a scratch not a gaping hole in my side. I’m going to be just fine with some antibiotic ointment and a band aid. “I’m sure I’ll get checked over.” she said looking up for a moment, “all of my coworkers are looking at me like I’ve lost my mind,” she mumbled before burying her face in his chest again. She nodded when he said not to hesitate to talk to him if she needed to talk about it, even with her coworkers staring at her she was in no hurry to pull away from Josh, something about being held and comforted by him just felt right. “Yeah, not sure I’d say that I feel real proud about anything at the moment. But everybody is ok, nobody got hurt and Sam is enjoying his ice cream so it definitely could have been worse.” She leaned into him when he put his arm around her. When he told her that she was going to need more than a minute to get over what had just happened she shook her head, “Really, I think I’m ok… just a lot going on in my head right now, but I’m sure I’ll be fine.” She smiled up at him because she was touched that he genuinely seemed to care about how she was feeling. “Thank you for caring.” She said as she leaned further into him. When they walked back into the room, Emily pulled away for a moment to close the curtain the last thing she needed was all of her coworkers staring at her waiting for her to fall apart and they needed to get back to work anyway. She was about to tell them that when Josh started talking and drew her out of her thoughts. Emily turned to face him and nodded. “Yeah, sure… that sounds good. As long as my charge nurse will be ok without me…I would love to go to lunch with you, even if it is just so you can keep an eye on me. I’ll just get a band aid over here and you can take care of my scratch for me.” She grabbed a band aid out of a drawer and handed it to Josh before lifting her scrub top to let him inspect the small scratch on her side. “So Dr. Josh, am I going to live?” When he finished with her side she pointed to the bed, “Now sit, and let me check your stitches and bandage you up like I was trying to do before this whole mess happened.” She waited for him to sit before she tugged on his shirt so that she could take a closer look at his wound. “They all look pretty good to me, but I expect that you’ll be more careful from now on because it won’t take much to pull a couple of them.” She busied herself applying a bandage to cover the stitches, hoping that Josh wouldn’t notice that her hands were shaking a bit. She had just sat down next to him on the bed and leaned her head on his shoulder when the doctor and her charge nurse barged into the room. The doctor asking her if she was ok, and the charge nurse insisting that she go home for the rest of her shift. Emily just sat up and looked back and forth between the two not sure what to say as they were both talking at the same time. When the two of them finally finished Emily responded, “I’m good… just had a little scratch on my side that has already been cleaned and bandaged, and probably a bruise on my arm. Nothing that’s going to kill me.” Trying to divert some attention away from herself she pointed at Josh, “All of his stitches are still intact and his wound has been bandaged, he’d probably like to be discharged at some point.” Tag: Josh Cameron

“Any time Emily, any time. Just believe me, I’m not leaving okay.” He said nodding to her, he knew that things might change and he might have to but right then he had no plans on leaving her alone with Sam at all. Josh didnt have a family to worry about which he guessed made his job a little easier, there wasn’t anyone waiting at home and his adopted dad was FBI too almost retired but still he knew the risks as well as anyone for what they did. It was easier when he could just focus on what was going on even if it wasn’t exactly perfect but then nothing in these situations ever was.
So maybe okay had been the wrong word choice but arguing on the finer points of okay, it wasn’t exactly anything that he could explain given who was there with her. He could tell her the statistics of things like this which might work for or against the situation, he could tell her exactly what he wanted her to do but then Sam would know and expect it but she had done great so far. She knew what she was doing at least to him Emily didnt seem like the type to completely freak out, start screaming and pulling to get out which he figured would go badly for her if she did.
Josh wasn’t about to let go of Emily, the first time someone had done that to him he had managed to step away and drop them so he had learned from his mistakes that first day. He didnt mind her falling to pieces after that as he just held her trying to make sure she was alright. “You’re safe, it’s over.” He said gently to her not wanting her to be afraid over it. Emily wasn’t like anyone else he had met and he was actually enjoying holding onto her, it wasn’t just a work thing in making sure she didnt crumble to the floor no it was more a fact that he was looking after her thing. “By the looks of it if I hadn’t have been here then you would have handled it just as well as you did in there.” He said smiling at her as he nodded, “It does beat the alternative because that would have be stuck on a desk for a second day doing the paperwork so I’m glad you’re alright.” He added grinning at her slightly, so it wasn’t just the paperwork he did have a heart and frankly he was relieved that Emily was safe and okay even if he was still sorry for what had happened to her. No he shouldn’t have left Sam and he should have made sure the guy was kept under control until he had some meds.
“Okay then I’ll believe you Emily, you’re the nurse here so you know what you’re talking about.” He said knowing that he couldnt argue with her though he would make sure that it was just a scratch. “You’ve not lost your mind trust me on that.” He said as he held her still happy to do so even if her co-workers were watching her. “They’re probably just worried about you, it’s not every day this happens.” He said trying to ease her mind over it as best he could do. Holding her and keeping her safe was nice, he hadn’t done that for someone he actually wanted to see again which was a strange sensation to him.
“You should be proud Emily, I am of you. You handled that like a pro and you’re right everyone is alright and Sam has ice cream.” He said as he nodded, he might have argued that she was the one hurt with her scratch but then he wasn’t ready to argue that point over with her. “If you say so Emily but the offers still there no matter what.” He said smiling back at her as he nodded, “Thank you for caring too and doing a great job.” He said as he rubbed his hand over her arm as she leaned further into him.
When they were in the room he watched her draw the curtain before he started on about lunch and repaying her for what she had done. “Thanks, it would be great to take you out... to lunch.” He said trying not to be too happy about it even though he was, he was about to ask which nurse he needed to bribe to let her go when he took the band aid from her and he took a look at her scratch as he placed the band aid over it carefully. “Hmmm well I think so... you know us doctors we don’t know much about scratches but i’d say you’ll be okay. Just remember modified duty and no going doing anything crazy for a few days.” He said grinning at her again as he pulled away from her once he had stuck the band aid on her.
Josh did as he was asked and sat up on the bed as he nodded, “Just don’t go out for anything this time, not sure I can do a second go at that just yet.” He said as he felt her tugging on his shirt as he took it off again. He was glad to hear that they looked okay given that it was stinging a little now, he should have listened to her about things he thought but then again at least now he knew. “I’ll be more careful if you promise to be too?” He offered watching as she bandaged over the stitches as he saw her hands shaking a little.
He was about to say something to her when the doctor and charge nurse can into the room, he was glad that Emily was being asked by the medical professionals if she was okay. He half wanted to point to her bandage and say ‘I did that’ though really sticking a band aid on someone wasn’t exactly the ground breaking thing as he was glad it wasn’t worse. Josh looked at Emily when she said that it was nothing that was going to kill her. The minute she started explaining about his stitches he shook his head.
“I would like to be discharged at some point but not without Emily, I owe her lunch and I think that she could use the rest of the day off if that’s okay with you both? I’m an FBI special agent and I can tell you she’s not okay.” He said not wanting to make a point about her hands as he looked between the nurse, doctor and then Emily. “You said my stitches would hurt later, I’m telling you this will hurt later once the shock wears off. Trust me.“ He said as he reached for her hand.

She laughed when he said that if he hadn’t been there she would have done just as well without him, “I don’t think so… knowing you were here helped me stay calm. I figured that this was your specialty, and that you would be able to save me when it all went sideways. Gave me a good bit of courage.” She shook her head against his chest and laughed when he said her being alright was sparing him a second day’s worth of paperwork. “Glad that I could accommodate you, would hate to make you pull a second day of desk duty.” She pulled back and poked him in the chest, “Promise me that you won’t blame yourself for all of this, if people would have followed your directions nothing would have happened. So none of this is on you. Hear me?” “About time you decided that I knew what I was talking about, and that it was pointless to argue with me. Just remember that from now on, and we’ll get along just fine.” She smiled into his chest. She could most definitely get used to this, it was nice to be held and comforted. Short of her brother Emily had never really let anyone get close enough to her to allow them to comfort her. “They might be worried about me, but they’re also watching me and you… I don’t generally cling to my patients like they’re the only thing holding me up in the middle of the hallway, well I don’t generally cling to anyone actually.” Knowing that they were watching her didn’t deter her or make her want to turn him loose any sooner. Hearing him say he was proud of her made her feel like she had at least done something right during the whole ordeal. “I wish ice cream would fix everything, but at least it made Sam happy.” She smiled at him when he reassured her that the offer was still good, and blushed a bit when he thanked her for caring and doing a good job. Feeling him rub his hand over her arm caused her to smile, “You make it easy to care, Thank you… for taking care of me. I don’t usually let anyone take care of me, because I’m stubborn and it makes me feel weak but with you it didn’t feel like that.” After she pulled the curtain shut she let out a breath and turned back to him, “I mean… even if I can’t go today… there’s nothing saying I can’t go some other day.” She couldn’t keep the smile from her face, he said he wanted to take her out. Sure he was just making sure she was ok, but at least it was something. When she felt him gently place the band aid on her side and heard him say she had to be on modified duty and nothing crazy for a few days, she titled her head and cocked an eyebrow at him, “Yeah sure, I’ll do modified duty when you do. Unlike you I’m not much for rolling around on the ground fighting with people so I think I can handle the nothing crazy just fine.” She followed him over to the bed and smiled, “Yeah… no I’m not leaving this room again anytime soon without you so just promise me that you’ll go to the store and buy some antibiotic ointment and put in on your stitches tonight and we’ll call it good enough.” When he took off his shirt she leaned over and got a closer look at the sutures she could tell that he had aggravated them a bit as there was some redness around them. “Do they hurt?” She asked as she gently ran her finger over the skin around them. She stood and looked him in the eye, “I’m always careful, so that’s an easy promise to make.” She noticed that he was about to say something until the doctor and her charge nurse and come in, she had to fight the urge to tell them to leave and give them a minute so that he could say what he wanted to. She figured that probably wouldn’t have gone over very well telling the charge nurse to get lost so that she could continue her conversation with a patient that she had been clinging to in the hallway. Oh yeah, Emily was expecting a lecture about this one sometime in the very near future. She saw Josh shaking his head out of the corner of her eye and turned to him as she finished telling them that he was ready for discharge. She looked back and forth between him and her charge nurse when he said that he didn’t want to be discharged without her because owed her lunch and that she needed the rest of the day off. “I… I… uhm…” Why couldn’t she form words, what was wrong with her? When he told the charge nurse that she wasn’t ok it snapped her out of it, “What do you mean I’m not ok? You saw for yourself that all I have is a scratch.” She was beginning to get upset with him, until he started talking again and reached for her hand. She sighed, “I do trust you, it’s just…” She looked up at the charge nurse and doctor and back at Josh, “I’m not very good at admitting that I’m not ok, I just toughen up and work through things. It’s how I’ve always done things, I don’t know how to even… or what you want me to do.” She squeezed his hand and laid her head down on his shoulder. Great a guy wanted to take her to lunch and she was falling apart, the longer she sat here and did nothing the harder it was for her to focus on what she needed to do. She took a deep breath gathered her thoughts and sat up, “Look I’m telling you all that I am ok, perfectly capable of staying here if you need me to, but if you think I need to leave I’m more than willing to go with Josh. Just promise me you’ll save the lecture about that for another day, not sure I’m up to hearing it right now.” Tag: Josh Cameron

Josh shook his head, from what he had seen her do there was no denying that she would have done as well without him as she had with him being there. “I’d be able to save you but it didnt go sideways you had a good understanding of what was going on so thank you for being easy to work with.” He said smiling, oh sure there were days when he had to yell at people to stay where they were. Tell them not to move even though he knew they wanted to run but Emily she had thought about and done exactly what needed to be done to keep herself safe.
“Yeah thanks for that, a second day would just be a nightmare.” He said grinning at her as she poked him. “I promise but I wont make the same mistake twice.” He said, sure he would still blame himself but she didnt need to know that he thought as he nodded to her. “Yes Ma’am, no arguing and you’re always right.” He added smirking slightly, he didnt want her to go anywhere as he held her glad that she was safe and alright. “Well you just cling away and I can wave at them if you want me to?” He offered looking at a few of the faces, “And it’s a honour to be holding you up so you just do what you want to do, I’m not moving anywhere.”
Josh shrugged as she spoke about the ice cream. “I thought that ice cream did fix everything, chocolate at least Sam has good taste I mean any other flavour and no chocolate I can live with.” He said seeing her blush as he spoke about thanking her for doing her job. “It’s not a weakness to let someone else take care of you, it shows strength of character. The one thing I know you’re not is weak Emily, that isn’t a thing i’d associate with you at all.” He said happy that she was okay with him looking after a little.
She wanted to go some other day? He grinned at her nodding, "That sounds great, I mean... yeah that would be good..." He said still grinning at her. Well if today didnt work then any day she wanted to go he would make it work no matter what was going on. He was glad that he hadn’t picked up the wrong end of things as he grinned at her. “Are you sure? I mean you seemed to have an action packed day already, and I’ll make sure to do modified duty if it means you would too. Can’t have that scratch getting worse.” He said as if he knew what he was talking about, yeah right he thought though at least she wasn’t asking him to sew up her side or something. That scratch he could deal with at least.
“I promise to go to the store and get antibiotic ointment and put it on tonight.” He said, he had a stock cupboard full of plasters, ointments for various cuts and bruises given that most days if he was working and things went a little oddly then he had various injuries mostly the small sort unlike today but still it paid to have a stock pile of things available just in case. Josh winced a little feeling her finger run over the skin, “A little yes but it’s okay. It’s supposed to hurt right?” He said pretty sure that it was but then again she knew a lot better than him. “Good and i’m glad for you to keep that promise.” He said.
When the doctor and charge nurse came in Josh just wanted to hide under the bed for a moment. He was trying to help Emily and now they were there well he wasn’t about to not say what he was thinking, a medical doctor he wasn’t but he knew what people were like after a day like Emily just had. Josh listened to Emily for a moment when she couldnt form the words, oh he had screwed this up he thought for a moment until he realised he had probably screwed up seriously so the minute she seemed to get upset with him over what he had said. “Your scratch isn’t what I was meaning.” He said trying not to exactly tell everyone there but at least let her know that he had seen her hands shaking.
Josh looked at her as he nodded and smiled for a moment. “It’s okay to not be good at it, if anything I’m not either you’ve seen that.” He said with a grin as he nodded again. He squeezed her hand back lightly when she laid her head down on his shoulder. “It’s okay not to know how or what, just know that I’m right here no matter what it is okay? No one knows how to feel or what to feel everyone’s different so whatever it is just know you’ve got people to talk to about it.” Josh didnt mind if she wanted to talk about Mars or the grass or really anything of the sort as long as she was alright. Josh looked at the Charge Nurse and doctor as Emily mentioned a lecture from them as he wondered what it was about.
Oh right, patient thing he figured as he wasn’t too sure how to get out from that but then again once he was discharged from the hospital he wasn’t a patient anymore right? “If you stay Emily then I stay, just want to make sure you’re okay. Nothing else I swear just that you’re okay.” He said looking at Emily before he looked toward the other two. “If this is about a patient thing then I’m FBI and I am doing my job, I’m not a patient because i’m all fixed up just need to get the paperwork sorted.” He said as if that made the world of difference to everything that was going on.

“Well since you’re not allowed to argue with me and I’m always right… I’m telling you, you didn’t make a mistake. My coworker did, plain and simple. You told him to leave Sam restrained, and he didn’t listen. So it clearly was not your mistake.” She smiled as he told her that he could wave at her nosey coworkers if she wanted him to and shook her head and giggled, “No…no need to wave, I’m sure they’ve all seen by now. After what I’ve been through today I could care less what they think, I think I deserve to be held up for a few minutes. It’s just an added bonus that you’re the one keeping me from falling apart.” She smiled at him when he told her she wasn’t weak, “Well I’m not very good at letting people take care of me, my brother had to do it for long enough… so when I got old enough to take care of myself, I did. I have been ever since, you’ll find that I’m quite stubborn and independent. It drives my brother crazy, but asking someone for help is usually my last resort. I guess it’s not half bad to lean on someone every once in a while though.” Noticing his reaction to her saying she could go some other day, at first she wasn’t sure if she had taken the offer the wrong way or not but judging from the grin on his face she was guessing that she hadn’t. She scoffed when he said she’d had an action packed day, “That? That was nothing…” she laughed before admitting, “Ok… so I have to admit that was the first hostage situation I’ve ever dealt with… but other than that the day has been pretty quiet. You have to be kidding me, this little scratch here is no reason for modified duty. You on the other hand ended up with stitches and have already done more than you should have, did you think I didn’t notice you grimace when you pulled on them opening the door?” She noticed him wince when she touched the inflamed skin, “Well it’s normal for it to hurt some, I guess. I just hate to think that you may have hurt yourself worse… We’re supposed to make things better, not let you get hurt worse.” She felt partly responsible for letting herself get grabbed, and the other part well she was going to have a long conversation with her coworker once she had a chance to calm down a bit, because right now all she wanted to do was toss him in the room with Sam and see how he liked it. Emily knew that Josh was just concerned about her, which made it easier for her to deal with him butting in saying that she wasn’t ok. She just wasn’t used to allowing anyone to speak for her, but she figured that Josh knew what he was talking about in cases like this so she decided not to argue with him this time. She’s give him the benefit of the doubt. “Ok… This isn’t something I’ve ever dealt with before, and you have… so I’ll take your word for it, this time. I can’t argue with an expert.” She looked over to him and smiled. As she laid her head on his shoulder she mumbled, “I don’t like feeling like I can’t handle things on my own, but knowing that you’re here to help makes it easier. I don’t really feel anything… but relieved that it’s over, and happy that you’re here… oh and mad at my idiot co-worker that can’t follow directions.” She picked her head up to look at her charge nurse, “Mike was given very clear directions to not turn Sam loose, I’d think someone would want to look into why he didn’t follow them… I don’t think I’m the person that he wants to talk to right now though.” Laying her head back down on Josh’s shoulder she asked quietly, “That’s really all I want to say about that whole ordeal… will you still take me to lunch even if I don’t feel like I need to talk about Sam anymore?” Her charge nurse looked back and forth between them when Josh said that if she was staying then he was too, and Emily would have pinched him if he wasn’t injured. “No, no need for either of you to stay. I agree with the FBI agent Emily, you need to take the rest of the day off now you can either go with him or I’m going to call your brother to come pick you up.” At the mention of her brother Emily shook her head. “Also after the day you’ve had and the way this gentleman helped us out, I think we can skip the lecture… but don’t make a habit of it. Sir, I will have someone in with your paperwork shortly. Just take care of Emily… this place wouldn’t be the same without her.” After the doctor and charge nurse filed out of the room she swatted him playfully on the leg, “So apparently the FBI title helps in situations like this, because up until you told her who you were I’m pretty sure she was going to fuss at me. I appreciate what you’re doing, but please don’t feel like you have to. I’d love to have lunch with you, but if you have something better to do today I can just go home and rest.” She hoped he didn’t have anything else to do, because she definitely wanted a chance to get to know him better. Josh listened to Emily and smiled, her co-worker was about to get a piece of his mind for what the guy had done given that he had asked that Sam was restrained. “My mistake for not being there to make sure he didnt hurt anyone.” He said knowing that she had been scratched but still that was on him for not staying with the person he knew to be volatile in the situation. “Well anytime you want me to hold you up or keep you from falling apart I’m happy to do it. You’re right to not care what they think, it’s a good thing to do.” He said glad that he was there.
“It’s not bad to lean on someone and independent is good but there is always a time when you’ve got to ask or accept help. I learned that one the hard way but it’s good you’ve got people to take care of you. Your brother sounds like a good person.” He said though he knew it was tough to ask for help or even to believe that someone would be there. He had been kicked from foster home to foster home until he ran away and ended up with the police which had turned out to be the best day of his life. He just didnt see that at the time when he had tried to run away from them too. It was what he was good at in life in general, running from the things that hurt.
Josh was happy that he got to see her another day, well at least that meant in his head that if it wasn’t today there was still a possibility. Emily was the sort of person he wanted to get to know better simply because there was something about her. “Oh so you’re the action packed nurse, but hopefully it’s your last hostage situation too but great job on dealing with it.” He said as he listened to her and nodded to her. “Sure it is, what if you pull the plaster? It could get worse so modified it is.” When she mentioned his stickes and the way he grimaced he had hoped Emily would have missed that part of things.
“It was just a heavy door and what you didnt see was that I hit my elbow on the door before that. See totally fine.” He said knowing that want true but still he was being a guy and guy’s just didnt admit to pain or feelings or really much else for that matter. “Okay well from my point of view nothing’s worse, in fact it’s turned out pretty great I mean I do get to see this amazing nurse called Emily again so really it’s turned out great.” He said smiling as he shook his head for a moment, “Besides it’s not your fault for what happened either and I’m not hurt worse. You’re the one who’s hurt worse than when you got here.” He said still feeling guilty that she had been grabbed. Scratch or no scratch.
Josh didnt make it a habit of butting in and telling people if they were or weren’t okay but shaking hands when he had seen them not shaking before. No that was what he classed as not okay at all. “I’m not an expert and only you can tell me if you’re okay or not but Emily you have to be honest with yourself. From what I’ve seen i’d say no but if you insist then there’s nothing I can do.” He said not wanting her to feel like he was pushing her as he smiled back at her. Josh was only trying to help her as he knew it wasn’t exactly the thing you expect to happen in life.
He listened to her again, he knew what it felt like to want to handle things on his own and not be able to. “Well I’m here anytime you want me to be and I’m sure you could have handled that on your own, besides all I really did was bring ice cream.” He said grinning as he watched and listened to Emily talk with the charge nurse. Josh put his arm around her lightly for a moment when she spoke of her co-worker and Sam, yes whoever let him go was insane themselves and needed to put looked at he thought.
Josh looked over at Emily for a moment and nodded to her smiling. “Of course I will take you to luch, it doesn’t matter to me what you talk about just as long as you’re alright.” He said, she could talk about aliens for all it mattered just as long as she was happy and safe. Josh couldnt hide his smile when the Charge Nurse seemed to agree with her taking the rest of the day though at the mention of her brother he saw her sake her head. “Oh you can count on it, she’s in safe hands I swear and yes this ER is lucky to have her.” Josh agreed grinning as he watched the nurse and doctor leave the room.
He chuckled when she swatted him playfully on the leg. “It’s got to have some plus points and why not use it if it helps. Besides cant have her fussing at you.” He said as he grinned and shook his head again. “Emily, honestly I would love to I really would. It’s not a case of having to and i’ve nothing better to do with my day at all. Well hang on just one thing.” He said as he thought about it before he smiled at her again, “Where do you want to go for lunch? That’s the only thing I need to know first then my whole day is free. Unless you want to go home and rest?” He offered not sure if that was a polite way of saying thanks but no thanks or maybe he was over thinking things as he had a tendency to do.

She laughed at Josh and shook her head when he insisted that somehow he had made a mistake, “You can think what you want, but I know that you didn’t make any mistakes… besides if you’d have stayed with Sam, we never would’ve had a chance to talk. A little hostage situation was worth the chance to get to know you.” She laid her head back on his chest, “besides, it’s a teeny tiny scratch… I’ve gotten worse all on my own.” At this point she was enjoying being held so much that she really could care less what anyone thought. “My brother is amazing… I don’t know what my baby sister and I would have done without him. He gave up so much for both of us, I just wish there was some way to make it up to him. I don’t mind asking for help… when there’s no other option. It’s just that he’s done so much already without being asked, that I hate to ask any more of him.” She often felt like Steven had been forced to grow up too fast, so that he could take care of her and Isla. There were days that she resented her mother for not being the adult that she had forced Steven to be, she should have been the one taking care of the family. Then again she knew deep down that it wasn’t truly her mother’s fault, which made it easier. She was so happy that he wanted to see her again that she didn’t care what day it was, maybe if she played her cards right he’d want to see her more than once. There was something about him that intrigued her and she wanted to get to know him better, it didn’t hurt that it had felt pretty amazing when he had held her earlier. “I try to avoid all this action, but sometimes it seems to find me. I appreciate the kudos, but I stand by my earlier statement that I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.” She shook her head when he insisted that she needed modified duty. “Seriously? For this little scratch? It barely broke the skin. I promise I’m fine.” She smiled knowingly at him when he tried to say that he hit his elbow, “Nice try, I agree the door is heavy but you didn’t hit your elbow. You used your elbow to open the door and twisted and pulled at your stitches. I was watching you very closely. So tell me I’m wrong.” He was being incredibly stubborn yet again; first it was insisting that he wasn’t in any pain, then insisting that he had made a mistake, now not admitting to pulling his stitches. She was shaking her head at him, but was still unable to wipe the smile off of her face. When he called her an amazing nurse and said that the fact that he got to see her again made things turn out great, she blushed a bit. “Well I’m glad that my amazingness hasn’t gone unnoticed today. I’m not hurt, this little scratch barely needed the band aid that you put on it. However your first aid skills are exceptional, I’ve never had anyone put a bandage on me any better. So you can stop feeling guilty any time now, like you said things have turned out really well… for me anyway. I’ve met this FBI agent, and he actually wants to take me to lunch so that’s a good day in my book.” Honestly she felt like she was ok, but if they were willing to give her the afternoon off and Josh wanted to spend more time with her… who was she to argue. “I really think I’m perfectly fine, but I won’t object to taking the afternoon off and spending it with you. At least this way I can prove to you that I’m going to be ok, and that you have nothing to feel guilty about.” Emily appreciated the fact that he was trying to help her, and for once she decided that allowing someone to help wouldn’t be all bad. “I appreciate it, I really do… I’m going to enjoy spending time with you, so anytime you feel like being here you’re more than welcome. I wouldn’t dream of turning down an offer like that. You got the ice cream and gave me the confidence to not panic, I was really close a couple times… but you knew what to do or say to make me feel strong enough to deal with everything.” When he said that he would still take her to lunch and that he didn’t care what she talked about she smiled at him, “I’m alright… thanks to you.” She saw him smiling when her charge nurse agreed with him. “I mean, I don’t doubt that Steven would come get me… but I think he’s working today and there’s no reason to upset him with this whole situation. Especially when I have someone here who’s willing to take care of me.” “She is nothing compared to the fussing my brother will do when he finds out about all of this… but I imagine being an FBI agent has plenty of plus points.” She figured that he probably had all kinds of women throwing themselves at him, but none of that mattered because he was taking her to lunch today. When he spoke honestly about really wanting to take her to lunch and not having anything better to do she found that his grin was contagious. “Well since you want to and aren’t doing this because you feel like you have to… I can eat just about anywhere. I’m not picky about food at all, and I’d much rather be spending time with you than resting at home. I can rest anytime, it’s not very often that I have a guy offer to take me to lunch. Especially one that I want to get to know better.” She said with a small smile and a squeeze to his hand. She sat on the bed with him for a few minutes in silence thinking about her day and how things had turned out. Knowing that she probably had some stupid smile plastered to her face she leaned closer and laid her head on his shoulder again. “I mean it, thank you for everything today. You may not feel like you did much today, but as far as I’m concerned you have made my day much better.” Tag: Josh Cameron ,

Josh was thinking about what she had said, true if he had stayed with Sam then they wouldnt have talked and there was definitely nothing great about babysitting a phsyc case. “It was worth getting to know you too but would have preferred it without another guy holding a knife to you if i’m honest.” He said grinning, sure there were better ways to meet a person but then work was where he met a few people so why not. Josh was happy just standing there and holding her as he rubbed her back lightly. “Still think it could need stitches and worse isn’t a good thing to get at all.” He teased though to him anyone got a scratch it was life threatening.
“I’m sure he doesn’t need it to be made up to him, sure he was just doing what he thinks is right but it’s good you have him there for you.” Josh didnt have brothers or sisters which was something he had always wanted, even if it was just for them to annoy him he didnt mind but then that wasnt in his cards at all. “I’m sure he wouldnt mind doing anything else for you by the sound of what you’ve said and sometimes you just need to ask. Even I have to ask for help sometimes, I mean had to ask you for help today.” He said with a grin, generally he wasnt one to ask for help or for others to stay with him while he got stitched up but then Emily was different and the exception to his rule.
Josh would have gladly taken her out more than once but then getting her out the first time was his first issue, his head was spinning with what to do if she said no which in his head was a pretty good chance. After all he had come into the ER with a patient that held her hostage and he had needed stitches, it wasnt exactly the fairy tale dream of how to meet anyone. “Trust me you would, you’re a fantastic nurse and if that doesn’t work out you’d make a great negotiator but thanks.” He said as he nodded to her seriously for a moment at the mention of modified duty. “Yeah well wouldnt want it to be any worse so modified would be a good place to start.”
Josh nodded when she agreed the door was heavy but he knew the minute she carried on he wasnt about to get off with that too easy. “You saw all of that?” He said trying to find a better excuse but really was there one, nope not one that he could come up with within the next ten seconds as he shrugged for a moment. “You’re not wrong but it doesn’t matter, you gave me good advice and I chose to ignore it besides you’re safe so pulling on stitches is worth it.” He explained though honestly he would do the exact same thing again if he had to. He was stubborn which either worked for him or against him but today it seemed to be against given that she had seen him wince.
“I bet it wouldnt ever go unnoticed and trust me Dr Josh said it does. Thanks though, I guess I have a career in attaching plasters too.” He said as he chuckled. “Well as long as it’s a good day in your book I can go with that because it’s a good day in mind too. Far better than the one I had this morning.” In fact it had turned out pretty good as far as he could see, he had never thought he would be thankful for having a fight in a cafe in the early morning but so far it had turned out pretty well.
“If you dont object then that will be fun, I mean like you say at least I can make sure that you’re going to be okay.” He said with a grin even though he would still feel guilty for bringing Sam into things that day especially since she had gotten hurt in the process of it all. Yes a scratch but to him that was a job that could have been done better to make sure she hadn’t been hurt at all. “Thanks and sure I’ll make sure I come by a bit just to make sure you’re alright still.” He said grinning okay so maybe a little more than that but still it was something that he would enjoy doing. “It was the ice cream that had all the power and you too, you did great in there and I was impressed. I didnt have any doubt that you’d not be able to handle it.”
Josh was just glad she was safe and alright, after all the things he had seen go wrong in a situation like that it was nice that she was able to walk away from it. Josh smiled and nodded to her when she spoke about her brother again, well if she was happy enough going to lunch with him then that was alright with him he thought. He just wanted to make sure she was alright after all it wasnt an everyday thing she had been through, that and the fact that he got to have lunch with her too because that was just great in his head.
He laughed when she mentioned the charge nurse was nothing compared to her brother. “He seems like a good guy and you’re worth fussing over.” He said as he nodded, “Sure we get bad coffee, we are generally disliked by local law enforcement, the donuts are great but other than that...” He said grinning, when it came to women sure there were a few that went all gooey eyed at the three letters FBI but Josh never went near anyone like that. After all he was a person beyond those three letters or at least he hoped he was.
Seeing her grin he found his own smile widening, “Really guy’s dont offer to do that for you?” He asked her figuring that she had a line of guys wanting to take her to lunch or at least date her. “You’re worth spending time with and it would be nice to get to know you better too.” He said as he felt her squeeze his hand. He sat there for a moment as his head tried to catch up with the fact he was taking her out to lunch. Josh shook his head when she said thank you. “No thank you, for fixing me up and for letting me take you to lunch too. You’ve made my day a lot better and that smile of yours... makes me smile too.” He said grinning as he held her hand for a moment sitting there quietly.
