Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is an understatement

Zach had to fight to keep from rolling his eyes. Ben could be super overprotective sometimes. All for something that shouldn't be construed in a negative light, which meant that Zach was getting reprimanded for something that wasn't even wrong! The pressing need to debate logic with an adult grew stronger. Before Zach could think better of it, he was already pointing out the flaw in Ben's line of reasoning. "It's slang for 'to make angry.' Hardly a bad word. Plus, it can't be that inappropriate since you just used it – again – in front of me."
Sometimes Zach questioned the rules, if he felt they were made up on the fly. Like considering ticking a curse word. Zach was reasonably certain it was a piece of his mom coming out in him. If there was a rule to be broken, she seemed to take great pride in breaking it. Not that Zach intended to go quite that far in his pursuit of justice.
"I have ears, Ben." Zach still hadn't grown comfortable enough to start calling Ben 'dad,' but he used the name with the utmost respect. Even if he was frustrated by the runaround. The entire house – maybe even the house next door – could hear the arguing. So why did Ben insist on treating him like a little kid, only to pretend like nothing was wrong? Somebody needed to step in and stage an intervention for the adults. Zach gave Owen a stern look. "Intentional or not, you upset her. You should apologize."
Zach shook his head, indicating he would remain standing. Since no one was giving him answers, this seemed the best course of action. If his mom came back, sitting down might make it look like he was siding against her. He still hadn't managed to figure out what Grace was on about either when she'd started talking about extra people. Something that had her smiling from ear to ear, but she was the only openly excited person downstairs. In fact, Grace looked about ready to start bouncing up and down, although that was generally pretty close to the norm for her. Hyper would have been one of the first words he used to describe her. Could whatever this extra people thing be somehow have caused this argument?
Zach glanced between Ben and Owen, an already stern look becoming something more, as he tried to mimic one of his mom's best uncompromising expressions. Surely if he stared at them long enough, one of them would break and tell him what he wanted to know. It worked for his mom often enough. Despite Grace's enthusiasm during all of this, Zach didn't share her sense of priorities right now, but he didn't want to purposefully ignore her either. "Up to Uncle Owen."
