Steven knew the minute she spoke about medics not being allowed to come and check on patients he knew it was true. Usually he was good with walking away at the end of a shift but there were those occasions where he wanted to know that the person was alright. Officially he had walked away as it was after shift and no one could really stop him from making a quick check. The ICU however was pretty much off limits unless you knew who to bribe. “Technically no we’re not, I made an exception to that rule for you. Needed to get you what I promised so I can’t exactly Fed Ex it in here.” He said with a grin glad that she seemed for the most part alright if one could be that. “No, none of those who do you take me for? A cop? Since you made the face though, I might have to go find you a pair.” He said as he chuckled, odd request for the ICU but then again when was normal ever normal. “Anyone would think you had some sort of wish for them the way you talk about them.” He teased deciding that he would land the entire conversation back on her when it came down to handcuffs. “How could anyone forget about you? An angel from the sky or at least that’s what I’ve told everyone.” He stated grinning as he saw her playfully pouting. “And that you are really grumpy.” He said as he made a face at her before he stuck his tongue out at her. “Well what did you expect first class was? Sun, sea and A & E, we’re not the Hilton you know.” He said though hopefully she knew he would never have just left her there for the tide. He could be strange but then not the murderous type, at least not yet. He was matching her attitude at the time and his threat was to just keep her awake. Steven squealed as he pretended to hide his face when she said she saw dead people. “You know me, happy to offer you the best side of Chicago. Where the medics just aren’t too bothered.” He said with a sigh before he grinned. “So you see Frank over there?” He said pointing to the corner of the room, “Thought it was only me, Frank meet Alyssa, Alyssa meet Frank.” He teased knowing there was no other soul in the room at all. He was the guy who would watch the horror movie, know exactly what would happen and then have to keep the lights on for an entire night just in case. Steven gave her his best ‘seriously’ look when she said he looked like hell. “Coming from the one in the ICU, thanks.” He said smirking as he shook his head. “Who needs sleep when you have cookies and caffeine? I finished shift and figured that I could get some rest here, it was quiet until... you know who woke up.” He said as he pointed to her before he sat back in the chair. “That good, well at least the inferno is warm.” He said sarcastically though given she was up and talking, it was all a good sign to him. No lasting damage he hoped though given the plane wreck he had seen it was a miracle in itself. “Thank you for saying thank you on behalf of every medic in Chicago.” He said honestly, he hardly did the job for a thanks but it was nice to be appreciated by someone. “Thank you for listening to me and keeping your eyes open as long as you did, for a patient you are one of the easier ones.” He added, Steven head dealt with a lot of people and the ones that made his job fun were the ones who did as asked even if it was with an attitude or sarcasm. There was no fighting or trying to run before she could walk, it was nice to be listened to. Alyssa Zorin,

STATE OF THE ART Alyssa smiled towards him. "It's nice to have the company" she mentioned. Alyssa didn't have anyone in Chicago. Well really she didn't have anyone even in Springfield. "Not something I am used to having much anymore." There had been the fiance until he'd done the stupid and murdered her brother. Granted her brother was the abusive type, but her brother had been all she had to grow up with. Though her fiance had acted illegally, then managed to get himself shot by the cops.
“Who doesn't like handcuffs?” Alyssa teased as she looked towards him. Her dad had been a police chief and maybe Steven reminded her a little bit of him, personality wise. Her dad had always returned her sarcasm with her own. It was a nice change of pace to know that others out there did too. "I'm kind of a loner. I'm easy to forget about" she told him though hearing his compliment she smiled. "You'd be grumpy too if you fell out of the sky" she added matching his tongue sticking out. What were they three?
Alyssa laughed. It hurt a bit but she was laughing. "You are hilarious." Though she was smiling. "I was kind of hoping I could at least take you to dinner when I get out of here?" She wanted to do something to repay him for what he had done for her. Though it was probably against some sort of policy somewhere too but she didn't care, it was just a personal thing. She wanted to do something for him.
"Oh I see Frank and Mr. needs to run a comb through his hair" she said reaching to move a piece of his hair out of the way. Though moving in such a way hurt. Though hearing him implying she was loud she glared. "Well ya know sleeping in ICU is usually the patient's job, not the paramedics" she informed him rather bluntly. Though there was a smirk behind her features.
“I woke up in the ICU. Inferno is a great way to explain the drugs and dizzy in my system. I think the pain meds are taking care of the rest.” She explained to him. She retracted her hand when she realized it was hurting just a bit. "All that matters is that I'm alive right?" ICU or otherwise she was here to have a conversation. Even if that conversation sounded like someone slurring their words as if drunk.

Steven nodded, she was right it was nice to have company and it beat going home to a house where he was sure his mother would have a thousand worried questions about shift. It was the same answers every day, ‘It’s all okay, was a quiet shift’. Everyone else in her eyes always got the good cases as it saved her from worrying. “Oh, a pretty woman like you? I can’t believe that.” He said grinning though he was sure there must have been people knocking at her door to be her friend or at least a few. Steven had work and home though he was lucky he had his mother and sisters though since they moved out he hardly saw them as often. “So you do like handcuffs, who’d have thought it.” He said smirking as he spoke, “Then again they are fun.” He said with a wink in her direction though it was all just sarcasm and banter. He had been in handcuffs and not for the fun of them, oh no he had been in them for the CPD and frankly he wanted to stay out of them because the cops were no fun. Especially when you suggested pink and fluffy ones would be better. “Loner or not, you’re totally not the forgettable type at all. So now I know about you and I won’t forget so you’re loner status is long gone.” He added grinning at her. How anyone could forget about a woman like that was beyond him, she was smart, sarcastic, funny and grumpy but that was to be expected given the circumstances. He laughed when she stuck her tongue out too. “Yeah well... be less grumpy, life is fun if you’re not grump.” He teased as he placed his thumb on his nose wiggled his fingers and stuck his tongue out at her again. He was how old again? Then he was a guy so really age was just something on a birth certificate and he had to grow up fast so he blamed that for his childish ways. “Yeah, glad you think so. I’ve been telling people that for years.” He teased seeing her smile and laugh, well that was a good sign all things considered for her as he heard her offer of dinner. The first thing that came into his head was work rules, as he looked at her a little more seriously. “You do know that if it had been anyone else they would have done the exact same thing as me. With less sarcasm of course but I was just doing my job.” He decided to state before he grinned, food was one way to get him to do anything. “Since you offered though, sure dinner would be nice but it’s on me and only when you get out of here? Deal?” He asked her, if it was on him work could hardly complain and if it was after she was set free from the ICU then it was hardly work related at all. “What food do you eat apart from cookies?” He asked her with a grin, “Can’t see too many places doing the chocolate cookie starter, main and desert.” He teased then again it was Chicago sure there would be a place that would do that. Steven laughed when she said she could see Frank though he frowned when she mention about Mr. Comb though the hair. “Yeah yeah, what do you expect George Clooney after messing around in the sand for a shift?” He joked grinning at her as she moved the piece of hair out of the way. “I’ll have you know that this ICU is a good place to sleep, usually people don’t talk as much as you here. ER is too noisy and the patient rooms, usually there is someone in them.” He explained which in his mind made sleeping in the ICU the next best place to the fire house and home. Quiet and you got a drink if the nurses liked you enough. “Inferno it is, but you’re still dizzy?” He asked wanting to make sure that she was okay, “And I can ask for some more pain meds if you’re still sore?” He knew that patient care after the first initial meeting was a little different but he just hoped that she was alright and there was nothing underlying that would come back to bite her. She had fallen out of the sky and in that she was hardly having the best day. “Alive and in one piece, it’s all anyone can ask for. Slightly drunk sounding but I can live with that.” He said with a grin as he poked her hand lightly so not to hurt her any. Alyssa Zorin ,

STATE OF THE ART Alyssa looked over towards Steven and sighed. "Yeah well when your ex kills your brother and then makes the cops shoot him? You tend to be a loner" Alyssa usually kept things less personal but she was drugged and there was no telling what she was actually going to disclose. She shrugged her shoulders and seethed. Oh what didn't hurt. "There are days it's lonely and other days it's peaceful" she admitted. Her parents were gone too but she wasn't going to get into that. And she certainly wasn't going to get into why her ex killed her brother but that had been in cold blood.
"Maybe I just like them for play" she teased lightly shaking her head. "Oh is that what you are doing now? Proclaiming your stalking ahead of time?" She teased shaking her head and cracking a smile. "I may not appreciate the sentiment later; but I won't turn away the company in here" she flipped her finger in the room. Though she couldn't tear eyes off the sexy paramedic.
"You sound like me in my younger years” really Alyssa wasn't that old but it was how she had viewed life at one point. "Then there comes a point in time where grumpy works." She was lonely to be honest; but she had a career and she kept busy. It wasn't like she had to go stalking men. Though if anyone asked if she was happy alone, she'd claim to be even if it was a lie.
“Well I am informing you that since you are the one that got the call, it's you going to dinner" she added with a grin. Though to be honest she might have accidentally bumped him on the street. "That's now how that's supposed to work" she gave him a look. "But I could make an exception." Alyssa added. "And I eat just about anything. I'm not picky" There was lots she was picky about but her food was not one of them.
"Comparing yourself to George Clooney. He does you injustice.” She pointed out with a smirk until he started talking about pain killers. Still she had no idea how he had gotten into here but she was thankful. "Yeah dizzy and sick to my stomach" then again she had been through a hell of a day; but she also had a strong stomach. Though she noticed he was poking her hand. "I've never been drunk enough to slur. I'm Russian. I hold my liquor" Alyssa dared him almost as she leveled eyes with him. Though she reached out lightly in the side and poked him in return.

Of all the answers to that he never expected the one he got. How did he even give a reply to that because normal was far from what he had just heard. He was still wrapping his mind around the ex killing the brother and cops. He had no witty remark for that or remotely anything sarcastic to say. “When it comes to cops, I’m not their greatest fan either. When your sister gets beaten by a guy, you step in and then they throw you in jail to cool off. Not so good.” He said deciding that if she was sharing personal information he could at least return it. He hardly wanted to delve into it but then he knew people said things under the influence of drugs though he hardly wanted her to feel bad for it. “Peaceful is good but you don’t have to be a loner anymore. You’ve picked up a friend so you can’t be a loner if you’ve got me.” He said with a grin doing his best to attempt to make her feel better. He wanted to ask her about what had gone on but then was the hospital really the right time to play twenty questions, maybe this was the reason why medics were supposed to drop off and walk away. Then again the ICU was peaceful and a good a place as any to get some sleep and find good conversation at least with the ones who were awake. “Ah well then I’ll have to see if I can find you a pair, cookies today and handcuffs tomorrow.” He teased not sure if he was turning into the stalker type. “Stalking isn’t stalking if I tell you first... see I’m not just a pretty face.” He said with a smirk as he saw her smile. She was one very beautiful pilot he thought as he tried to shake the thought from his mind though he was hardly sure he wanted to. “So you’re only using me for my company, well I supposed I’ve been asked for worse.” He said thoughtfully though there had been many strange requests over the years and most of them were work related. “What do you mean you’re younger years? You mean when you were twelve which was like maybe five years ago if you ask me.” He said though she hardly look old at all, he was getting closer to old though his father always told him he was only as old as he felt. So he was still on his twenty first birthday for a good few years after. “Then look at me Alyssa, grumpy never works. Life’s too short for grumpy, be happy and dance like no one’s watching. Then you end up like me, the mind of a teenager with very super awesome sarcasm to match.” He said with a grin, so he could be grumpy at times too but he soon found something to take that away. Steven grinned back at her at the mention of dinner. “Then it was worth dragging my butt out of the warmth of the fire house today then.” He said grinning as he nodded, “It’s exactly how is works but glad you’re making the exception.” Steven was never about to let her pay for dinner, yes it was her idea but if he paid it got around all of the work red tape and rule book issues. “Good, so you pick the place and let me know where you want to go.” He said grinning, the one thing Steven did like was his food and honestly he ate just about anything. It was a gift and a curse. He chuckled and rolled his eyes when she said Clooney did him an injustice. “Wow, thank you. Yeah, as much as I love that I think we’ll hold off on those pain meds, must be affecting your eye sight.” He teased though he pressed the button for the nurse anyway when he heard her say she was dizzy and sick. It was understandable given the day she had been through though he knew better than to start messing with meds in the ICU. Steven levelled his eyes with her as he grinned, “You’re Russian and by the sounds of it you’re not so great with the liquor at all. I hear slurring.” He retorted as he laughed when she poked him in the side. “So you’re into hand cuffs and can’t keep your hands to yourself... geez Alyssa. Is this what they teach you in Springfield?” He teased lightly grinning. Alyssa Zorin,

STATE OF THE ART Not really sure when she had fallen asleep again, she was asleep for quite some time. It had been a few days before they transferred her to recovery. Now she was being discharged. Somewhere in all of that she hadn't heard much from Steven after falling asleep on him. Then again she knew he had work, so it wasn't like he was going to have to live that down forever.
Handing her paperwork to the nurse and grabbing her things from the floor, she was leaving. Hearing commotion outside of the ER they were saying something about a paramedic coming in. Alyssa was nosy. Moving over to the nurses station she was waiting in line to ask the nurse a question when she saw two female paramedics bringing in a familiar face. Before she realized what was going on there was a younger brunette holding her back.
"Ma'am you can't go in there." Annabeth was holding her back. Shani was right, this man did collect psychos everywhere that he went. "Steven" Alyssa shoved the younger girl off of her. Annabeth gave Shani a look that apologized. Alyssa was far more intimidating than most people Beth dealt with. "What happened?" Everyone was trying to push Alyssa away and anyone who so much as touched her went to the ground. "Steven" Alyssa called again. He'd saved her and now he was like this. What was going on? This whole week was cursed.

For a paramedic he was spending little time at the hospital even though he tried to go as often as he could to see that she was alright. It was another day and another cover shift he had managed to pull which was number... he had lost track that week. The one thing he did know was that today Alyssa was getting to go home and he was determined to get there to see her out. It was the least he could do since he actually saw her in the place to begin with. He had enjoyed spending time with her and then after she fell asleep on him, well he was looking forward to seeing her again. Steven had no idea what was going on, he remembered being in the back of the ambulance when suddenly the floor was being ripped out from under him. It seemed to happen so fast and yet so slowly all at the same time. It was as if his world had exploded and he had no idea why or what was going on until he was on a gurney being wheeled into the emergency room himself. It had to be the Israeli annoying one that found him which hurt more than any injuries did as he knew it would be held over his head for years. His leg hurt like hell as did everything on him as he tried to focus when he heard a familiar voice. If it was one of his sisters or both of them no he was fine he had to be okay as he tried to sit up but found that moving hurt more than just lying there. His head wanted to explode as he tried to figure out who was calling him. “I’m here.” He said which in his head felt like he had yelled it when really he had more just said it quietly. “Alyssa? Is it... thought you... home.” He said trying to think if he had made it in time to see her out or if he was just hallucinating. "Did I get here on time?" He asked trying to figure out if he was dreaming or actually in the hospital. Shani glared at the woman who shoved Beth off of her. Yes Steven had phsyco’s on his tail that was for sure, what was it about the man that attracted the nutcases these days she wondered as she did the hand off to the doctor. Shani moved over to Beth to try and sort out what was going on. “Hey, back off and let people do their jobs before I floor you myself.” She snapped, “Don’t you ever shove my partner again.” Shani added with a glare. Since the accident Shani had tried to get used to her new partner though the one thing she was sure off she was hardly accepting anyone pushing the girl around. “Are you alright?” Shani asked Beth making sure that she was between the two women just in case Alyssa got any new ideas about shoving anyone else there. “And how do you know Hudson?” She asked being nosey but beyond that crazy women were not exactly something that Shani figured the guy for. Slightly insane sure but then if she needed to get the cops involved for some paramedic groupie she would do. Alyssa Zorin,

STATE OF THE ART Alyssa pushed her way past the others completely ignoring Shani. Alyssa was used to people thinking they could touch her. Technically being Military, she was designated as military property by law. Shani wouldn't last long when it came to the law and Alyssa knew it. There was little sense in starting a battle of the wits. "You got here, just next time no copying me alright?" Alyssa was clearly worried. As long as he didn't need surgery she was going to stay by him. It was going to take a lot more than some medic fluffing her feathers to chase Alyssa away.
She could see Beth outside picking herself up off the floor. Though she mostly ignored the exchange between partners which consisted of Beth insisting she was alright and looking a bit irritated. Alyssa played with some of Steven's hair. "Dark hair suits you, ya know." She was trying to make him feel better before she started asking questions. "You know if you were trying to show up in style you could have chosen something better than an ambulance." She teased a little.
Alyssa pushed some of her own golden hair out of the way and ran a thumb over his shoulder. What was she doing? Stop it, Alyssa this is how things get out of hand. she chided at herself. She knew what she was doing, she was looking out for him now. Though she wasn't sure if it was because she felt obligated to do so or if she was starting to feel something different. No, she had to stop reading so much into it.
"You want to tell me what happened?" Well she probably didn't want to know. Alyssa was keeping out of the doctor's way. Alyssa looked at her for answers. Medical knowledge wasn't her thing, but she could tell when something wasn't right and Paramedics definitely weren't supposed to come into the hospital on stretchers in work uniforms. No, there was everything wrong with this.

Shani glared at the woman, the law might harm her but not before she managed to tear stripes out of the woman herself. What was wrong with this crazy woman she thought deciding that if Hudson had to deal with her then she had done her piece by getting him to the hospital on time. Steven grinned as he nodded to her but even that gesture hurt as he winced seeing her worried expression. “Copying, I was just on my way... not copying.” He said still trying to piece together why he was even on a gurney when he had been sat next to one a short while ago. Steven looked up at Alyssa, “Thanks, blonde suits you too but you should stop moving so quick.” He said as the image he had of her was going from focused to blurry with each blink of his eyes. “Style It’s what I do. If it’s not an ambulance what would have wanted? A limo? Tank maybe? Oooh I could have ‘borrowed’ a fire engine for you.” He said chuckling lightly though even that hurt as his brain seemed to kick back into gear after it felt like it had taken a serious knock in it senses. Feeling her thumb run over his shoulder he could have relaxed easily under her touch but then he had been heading into the hospital to see her off. He had mixed feelings about that all day but not he was actually there he just wanted her to stay a little longer. No it was simply a mix of drugs, worry and fear of not being able to get home that night he thought. If he was unable to go home it meant having to call his sisters, one a nurse and one just about a nurse which meant fussing, chaos and someone needed to go and look after their mother he thought as he was pulled out of his long list of things he still needed to do by her voice. Steven winced and groaned as someone bumped his leg as he glared at the doctor. “Think it’s broken.” He said trying to focus on Alyssa’s question. Yes what exactly had happened he wondered. “I was in the back treating the patient Colin... where is he? How is he?” Steven asked looked at Alyssa as if she had all the answers for him as he tried to sit up but the explosion of pain that shot through him took his breath away as he fell back onto the bed with a light thud. “What about Alex? He was driving... I don’t know it happened so fast.” Trying to explain when he had seen nothing coming at all. “I was just reaching for gauze when the wall caved in and... the floor wasn’t the floor I wasn’t buckled in and everything went everywhere. I don’t know what happened... the ambulance was hit or...” He was trying to think of the possibilities though given the fact he had bounced around the back of that thing like a pin ball there had to be another vehicle involved. “I need to go clean up or find Alex and Colin.” He said blinking a few times as he tried to push himself up though the pain came again but this time in his leg he had tried to use too. STATE OF THE ART Alyssa just ignored Shani. It was easy, the woman meant nothing to her. Steven on the other hand… yeah she was still sorting that out. “Relax, I was trying to bring a smile to your face, is that a crime now?” She offered the question still playing with his strands of hair. There was a look in his eyes that was breaking her. She could see the pain even if he was trying to hide it.
“That’s the pain medication kicking in, but I am not going anywhere. They are going to have to kick me out of here.” She knew at some point they might try, but even then she wasn’t sure she would go far. Though she was staying out of the way. “You and I can redefine style later.” Alyssa whispered as she kissed the top of his forehead. What was she doing? She hardly knew him but she didn’t think she could leave without breaking. Alyssa wasn’t used to worrying over others.Yet, here she was worrying over the man who had saved her life.
Alyssa tried to calm Steven down as soon as he mentioned the broken leg. She could hear the pain she’d seen in his eyes earlier. Then he mentioned someone named Colin. Alyssa didn’t have any answers. “I’ll get someone to find out. Just focus on me the moment.” Getting him to worry about himself? A long shot, given that he was a first responder.
Alyssa’s eyes could pin a flea to a wall. “You are staying right here. Trust me to take care of it.” Oh, if he wanted to meet stubborn then he had met it. It wasn’t a trait she kept hidden. Alyssa was very fierce and competitive but she was also stubborn and could put her foot down when she needed to do so. Steven had a grip over her psyche and he’d get her stubborn side just to make sure he was okay. That was how Alyssa worried about someone. She was hardly one to sit in the corner and bite on her nails while waiting for information.

Steven rolled his eyes as he grinned at her for a moment, “Not a crime no but I should be making you smile.” He stated enjoying the feel of her playing with the strands of his air, it was far easier to focus on that when everything else in the world hurt at that moment. Over the years Steven had become used to hiding things, what his family needed to know and what they better off not knowing. He had a face for it and did his best to cover what he saw as a weakness despite the fact he was in a hospital. He was the one who helped others not the other way around. He chuckled at the mention of pain meds, “Finally I get the good stuff but are you sure? I wouldnt want to ruin the rest of your day with this besides give me an hour or so and I’ll be brand new.” He stated though sure maybe drugged up to the back eye balls brand new which meant he would be as high as a kite. “Redefine it later... sounds like a good plan.” He said smirking as he felt her kiss the top of his forehead. He was hardly used to having anyone worrying over him, he was the one doing the worrying over others. At the fire house, his sisters and mother, he worried a lot it was a life skill he had acquired as he stared at her for a moment not quite sure what to do or what to say to her. He hardly knew her and she was kissing his forehead and he was worried about what she thought and how she was. At the mention and realisation of his broken leg he felt as if things had just turned out to be a little more serious than a scratch or two. “Yeah I will, just the patient... I don’t know where he went or if it was okay.” He said trying to look around to see if he could catch sight of the person he had been treating not too long ago. The ambulance was supposed to be safe, yes he knew it was hardly a brick house but the thing was supposed to be a refuge for those in need of help. Not the thing that managed to get hit and cause all kinds of problems like when was he going to be back on the road or when was he going to be able to get back to work with a broken leg. That was six weeks right he thought, no he would have to do it in three he thought or he would be climbing in the walls. Her eyes had him pinned as he nodded to her for a moment. “I’m staying I just... need to know if they are okay? They’re my responsibility.” He said being used to doing things, making things work out. He was the one when there was a crisis that knew what to do, if someone’s arm had fallen off he knew what to do but being the patient he had little experience with that. He was the guy that helped others when they were in that situation and being in it himself he had no idea what to do to fix himself if that was even possible as he just stared at Alyssa and grinned at her for a moment. Oh the drugs were starting to make themselves known he thought as he bit on his lip to prevent himself from saying anything remotely stupid which would only last so long. Alyssa Zorin,

STATE OF THE ART "You already did that, it's my turn." She refuted. Alyssa was incredulously stubborn and usually this open with people. In fact, usually she was much like she had been with Shani and pushy. People skills weren't exactly Alyssa's thing, if she rubbed them the wrong way then so be it. Though with Steven, she felt like he could take it. Correction, he had already proven he could take her snark and toss it right back. Somehow, she was drawn to that.
"You? New?” Yes, she was daring to call him old. She had no idea what she was thinking when she kissed his forehead. Though she was trying to get him to just settle down and she knew it could maybe work. No, she had feelings for him. Then she was conflicted. She was starting to get feelings for someone who was just doing his job. Alyssa wasn't even sure if she knew what was happening right now.
Alyssa put a hand on his shoulder. "I told you, I will get someone to find out. That's a promise, Steven." She squeezed his hand. "Give me a minute alright." She released his hand to go to the door and grab a nurse. She started to explain the situation. "I need you to check on two people for me. Well for him. Please." She then rambled off the names as the nurse looked confused and then finally agreed once she saw who was in the room. "Thank you." She replied as the nurse sauntered off.
Then she came back beside Steven and tried to take his mind off of something. "You need me to call anyone?" Well she didn't know what family he had, though she was pretty sure she had heard the name Hudson thrown around the hospital at some of the nurses more than once during her stay. He needed to rest and she'd argue the point with him. She sighed, knowing that she wasn't even supposed to be in here right now but the nurses seemed to be making an exception as they worked. As long as Alyssa stayed out of the way.

“I did?” He said grinning at her though he was getting used to her stubborn side. Stubborn was good in a lot of situations and he had nothing against that, he doubted that he would ever hear the end of it from the Israeli paramedic however they hardly started off on the greatest footing so why not just add to the arguing between ambulances. It made for an easy day with harassing each other over a radio for a shift. It was nice to actually get along with a person, snarky as they were though everything he had managed to throw right back at her she had handled which made him smile more. Steven grinned at her when she questioned new, “Yes new, unless you’ve something to add to that? Say old and I take all the cookies back.” He said her almost daring her to say he was old. Thirty seven how was that old, so he said that every year and when he reached fifty he figured he had earned his mid life crisis but old no not until he was at five anything. Usually he was good at walking away from patients, pick up and drop off service but with her it was different. Sitting with her in the hospital, getting to know her, offering to see her off there was something there but he was as usual unsure what to do about it. He had no reason to doubt what Alyssa had said as he felt her hand on his shoulder. “Thank you.” He said trying not to act like the crazy person but everyone in that ambulance was the responsibility of the medics and each medic for the other. When she squeezed his hand he never wanted to let it go which for him was crazy as he nodded to her as he watched her go to the door. Was he being remotely rational when he wanted her to come back, he was heading to the hospital anyway to say goodbye which given his shift he had though little about other than the cookie basket back at the fire house. If that remained intact he would be lucky but at least he was on time even if he was in a worse state than the previous day. When she came back he smiled at her though when she mentioned calling anyone he winced, he had forgotten that part of things. “Yeah I need my phone...” He said as he reached into his pocket but there was nothing there as he tried to figure out if the nurses had it. “My sisters they need to go to the house and look after mum, I don’t know if they’re working today though.” He said as he dropped his head back against the pillow. Two sisters and he lived in the family home with his mother still, one word. Complicated. He closed his eyes for a moment not sure how much to explain at all or why he felt as if he should at least clarify thing. “Yes I live at home with my mother, after my dad passed she went to pieces and hasn’t really been the same since so I... long story but it’s complicated and Isla and Emily need to stop her freaking out over this.” He rambled as he looked to Alyssa wondering at what point she would run out of there and not look back. It was only the natural response he thought. “They’re nurses here but I’ve no idea if they’re working so I need to call them...oh man they’re going to go nuts.” He said not sure who was going to kill him first, mother or sister and then which sister would probably depend on who was closes and after that. He needed to be knocked out he thought, that way he would happily be unaware of his death at their hands. “Alyssa... sorry. I didn’t know and to land this and if you’ve somewhere to be its okay I mean I’ve got this covered.” He said deciding that rather than her thinking she needed an excuse he could at least give her the out on this if she wanted it. STATE OF THE ART “Yeah you did.” She pointed out, You just couldn’t see my smirk under all of the rubble. Alyssa was watching his monitors like a hawk. She’d had military aide training but nothing beyond CPR. Though she could read colors on the monitor. Those were easy enough. If they weren’t yelling and beeping then things were okay. Why was she worrying so much? Alyssa kept looking between him, the nurses, and the monitors looking for answers. This whole thing was a mess. Why was she invested in anyone? She didn’t even like people.
Alyssa shook her head. “Not new does necessarily mean old. Wisdom comes with not new” Truth was it came with age but age didn’t make someone old or young. Age and wisdom came with experiences in life. But thirties was hardly old from where she stood. Her fingers traced his shoulder.
Alyssa didn’t mean to get him worked up. “I’ll handle it.” She set her hand over his frantically searching one and tried to calm him down. “I’ll find out everything. Don’t worry about all of it.” If she had to show up at his mother’s she would. Though ‘Hi, I am doing a favor for Steven’ was likely to go over so well. Yet in the scope of things, she wasn’t sure that would matter too much.
At least he had family. She had up until recently only had an abusive brother and an insane boyfriend. Alyssa had a few of those but this last one had really taken the cake. “You have no reason to, but trust me on this.” She would get it taken care of, but she was going to wait until he rested. The blonde was far from going to leave him here on his own. “Someone once told me they weren’t going anywhere, when I was trapped under my plane.” She pointed out. Was she just returning a favor or was she starting to feel like this was out of control.

Steven grinned at her as he chuckled, “Yeah I remember that... couldn’t see it but glad you could smirk though.” He offered happy that she had been pulled out from plane that seemed to be more pieces than whole. He was used to seeing those sorts of things miles above his head not in pieces so the day had been an experience to say the least. Steven could see her watching the monitors, it was yet another job he was used to doing for patients and not used to having anyone do that for him. He tried to keep himself as calm as possible to prevent the monitors from blaring though it lead him right back to the same question. Why? She was the reason and he knew that but why he was doing it. Time for that later he thought as he looked at her, wisdom comes with not new. So he was old, great he though silently as he rolled his eyes as he felt her fingers trace his shoulder. “Okay out and say it... I can take it. Kick a guy when he’s down.” He stated sniffing lightly as he pretended to be upset which was hardly far from the truth but then more upset with the fact he had ruined the whole goodbye though since she was still here. He could hardly say it was a wasted accident. “Let’s hear it then... I am old but the wisdom was a nice way of putting it. So thank you.” He said grinning at her for a moment. Steven looked up at her when she placed her hand over his as he stopped searching. “Are you sure? It’s asking a lot of you and I’m sorry.” He said not sure if he wanted her to find out everything all at once but then he hardly had another choice other than asking a nurse when they had five minutes free which was likely to be in the next twenty four hours at some point. “I ... it’s.” He said trying to find the right set of words to use as he stared at the ceiling for a moment. “Yeah.” He decided upon not sure what he was going to or even wanted to say to her. Why did he trust her when he knew precious little about her but the fact of the matter was he did trust her, regardless of any reason to. Steven squeezed her hand lightly as he smiled at her, “Thank you Alyssa.” He said while listening to her talk about what he had said to her when she was under the plane. “They did? I wonder who that was.” He said thoughtfully as he smiled, “But I mean it, if you need to be somewhere else then its okay. I had other things planned for today besides this not that I planned this but, well I thought if you wanted something to eat after you left or a drink and I got you some more cookies too but they’re back at fire house because I was supposed to go back there before here. “ He rambled as gazed at her not sure if he was telling her too much or scaring her to death but he enjoyed her company and if truth be told the fact that she was leaving that day had made him feel sad to think that he might not have seen her again after that. Alyssa Zorin,
